Trouble rooting GS4 I337UCUFNJ4 on 4.4.4 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I'm trying to root my AT&T Galaxy S4 I337UCUFNJ4 on Android 4.4.4
I downloaded the I337_NC1_Stock_Kernel.tar.md5 file and flashed it using Odin.
I have USB debugging enabled, it's set to allow unknown apps, and I have unchecked verify apps.
I was able to successfully flash the NC1 kernel. The phone status screen still says NJ4 but wifi has become disabled so I'm pretty sure the flash to NC1 worked (also I read that it's common for it to still say NJ4).
When I run Towelroot and click "Make It Rain" button, the phone just freezes. After a while I get a message that Towelroot is not responding. It gives me the option to wait to close Towelroot. I can't exit the app. I've rebooted and tried many times. Sometimes while it's frozen I can hold down the home button to get the list of open apps and can close it that way. Other times that doesn't even work and I have to hold the power button down until the phone shuts off.
Any thoughts on how to fix the problem or alternate ways to root the phone?
I had a different i337 in the past, I think that one might have been Android 4.4.2, and rooted it by a means different than Towelroot. I can't remember how though.
Your help is greatly appreciated!

Update:
I downloaded the I337UCUFNB1_Rootable and flashed the phone with Odin after which Towelroot ran with no problem.
I'm wondering, should I even bother trying to update back to NJ4 or just leave things the way they are?

WIFI won´t connect after manual update to Kitkat 4.4.2

Hello everyone, i'm a new member. I apologize if my english is not good enough.
After been driven insane by one pre-installed app from my Operator (Claro Peru) i decided that it was time to root my device to get rid from that pest. I'm a noob, so i started to investigate about the safest methods to not damage my phone. My Device's model is SGH I337m.
The plan was to update the FW from JB 4.3 that came with my phone to 4.4.2 and then proceed to root. I downloaded the Canadian 4.4.2 FW with build version I337MVLUFNC1 and installed manually with Odin. After the phone rebooted, my S4 was upgraded with 4.4.2 but Samsumg keyboard was going insane, so i went to the apps and solved that cleaning the cache/data. Then i noticed that the Wifi wasn't connected, i tried to turn it on, but then a message with a shield appeared saying that my device security stopped the operation. Beliving it was only a problem with KNOX, i installed autoroot (CF-Auto-Root-jfltecan-jfltevl-sghi337m) with Odin, open SuperSU and stopped it from working, but the Wifi still wouldn't connect.
So the first thing that crossed my mind was to unroot and do a factory reset, didn't work. The FW still was 4.4.2, so i´ve been searching solutions with this FW because i've read some cases of devices that stopped working completely after trying to do a downgrade. so i don't want to go to that route for now.
After a couple hours of search, some solutions i found on the forum were:
- Install Faux123 Kernel (Found on Youtube, this would be the thread i think http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2273437http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2273437
- Flash a modem for i337m
- Safestrap recovery and bypasslkm.zip
- Downgrade
I haven't tried any of this methods because i dont want to get into a deeper trouble. In the first solution i'm not sure what to do because this is the files the author recommends for canadian models (i337m), but when i enter here http://faux.romhost.me/jflteatt/jb42/http://faux.romhost.me/jflteatt/jb42/ only jflteatt appears, and that would be i337 model, isn't it? I thought that installing it may cause more troubles, so i didn't do it.
For the flashing modem method, i'm not really sure if installing a modem from another country would get me in trouble, so again i didn't proceed.
I found the Safestrap and recovery method on a downgrade thread for the i337, so again, didn't do it.
So, is there a way to get one of this methods working on i337m to get wifi working again, or is there any other better method to get back wifi.
I would really appreciate any help you can give me guys.

ok so you have the i337m canadian version... making anything related to safestrap and the att i337 irrelevant, completely different methods so don't get them confused lol
you were updating from stock 4.3 right? your best bet is to factiry reset and reflash stock fw for 4.4.2 before you brick your device... kitkat is very different from 4.3, maybe read up on it a bit too...
for ex, the "message with a shield appeared saying that my device security stopped the operation" isn't related to needing to root, it's an option under security settings.
to enable superuser on kitkat you need to enable developer options, then enable superuser. I prefer supersu so manually install that from play store afterwards. I recommend checking and/or enabling this as soon as the phone completes booting up after flashing.
also I think there's a known issue w/ 4.4.2 and wifi not turning on until after 2nd boot completed if I rememebr correctly, been using 4.4.4 for awhile now though so could be wrong...
good luck and check out the help section

[Q] RESOLVED: Any audio causes phone to hang

Phone: i337 with MDL bootloader
I'm able to flash ROMs successfully and get wifi, LTE, cell signal, text messaging and to place and receive calls, but the phone app does not appear on the screen after dialing and the UI freezes for about 30-45 seconds before I'm allowed to access the drop-down menu to hit the end button. When trying to play any type of audio, the UI freezes similarly. I've tried different modems (NB1, NC1, NI1, MDL) and different roms (Hyperdrive RLS19, Goldeneye 43, GoogleExperience v03, SHOstock 8.1) and all have the same problem.
The one thing that was different from other ROMs was the Viper audio driver in Hyperdrive, but I assume the dozen or so erase/reflashes would have wiped that out. Has anyone ever experienced this? Thank you for your help.
I forgot to mention that the calls made to or from this phone can't be heard on either end. There's no audio working at all on this thing. I'm getting close to flashing 100% stock and losing the MDL bootloader as the phone is worthless as is. Any ideas?
Marking this as resolved. While I never did get root cause... to resolve, I took the following steps.
Go to Sam Mobile to download the MDL ODIN flashable firmware.
Flash firmware only (no PIT file or anything) using ODIN 3.09
If your phone hangs on the AT&T logo (as mine did), boot into recovery by holding volume up and the power button, then release the power button and continue holding the volume up button until in recovery
Don't bother setting anything up, just verify everything works and enable debugging (To enable developer options, go to "About Phone" and tap the Build 7 times. It will tell you it's working after three taps)
Go to the frequently asked questions in our forums and find a guide on rooting an MDL based phone. It was really helpful.
Load whatever Rom you'd like and Loki it if required.

Rooted and Unlocked [att to tmobile] Nothing working!

Hi! I am having major issues with my s4 i337 after switching from att to tmobile. The phone was unlocked so I took it upon myself to unlock it. It is unlocked but sometimes or rather most of the time does not pick up the network. When it does have data connection, it is Edge. I flashed the NC1 to root my phone, then reflashed to NJ4 (to unlock) but now nothing works. No wifi, camera fails, no multitasker, no voice assistant. Please help!!!!! I don't know what to do. I should have never unrooted it to unlock. I should have paid the $35 to get an unlock code. Can I fix this?
I have tried multiple APN settings,
Tried reflashing what I found online as att official firmware but it fails on ODIN.
So reflashed to NJ4, it is a bit laggy as well. Tried wifi which is greyed out, Camera still shows failed, pressing the home button to open multitasker and voice assistant brings up a blank grey screen. Phone is no longer connected as a mass storage device, only charges and can connect to ODIN.
I have attempted to factory reset which doesn't go through, unroot through SU which gets stuck on uninstalling and even trying to do an emergency recovery on Kies where it fails and gets stuck on kies failure mode.
I am on 4.4.4
I'm not sure what you mean by re flash to nj4, but have you flashed the nb1 tar? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50912149

No I have not tried that one! Should I try it and which version should I use since I am rooted?

I guess I was following outdated information for rooting. =[ Which was dated 2013.... Should have sensed something was wrong.
I flashed this and it worked perfectly as you suggested! THANK YOU SO MUCH. No more sleepless nights combing through forums, thanks to you! Everything works and is back to normal, I was about to just throw away this phone thinking I permanently broke it. AGAIN MANY THANKS! I'm scared to root it now.
Although I have one more question, if you could please answer.
After booting and everything working, in the notification, it says unauthorized access and to restart to reset changes made, if I dismiss it, will this fix be permanent and not revert to the unworkable state it was in? When I reboot manually?

It doesn't really matter since you can root the device in either case. The rootable nb1 can be directly rooted. The other one, you'll have to update to nc1 to root. Flashing with odin, you will lose and will have to re-root. Also, see "Index All things AT&T...." by Gutt13 in the General Forum

ODINing to NB1 should definitely help, but as far as mobile data if it still isn't working I thought i read somewhere that T-Mobile needs the AWS bands or something and you'll have to follow the process to enable those. There's a thread somewhere in the General section to do it on 4.4

Rooting Problems, Please Help

I have a Galaxy S4 SGH-I337 i9500 running Lollipop 5.0.1. For the life of me I just can't get this thing rooted.
I have tried several different CF-autoroot files such as CF-Auto-Root-ja3g-ja3gxx-gti9500.tar.md5, and a very vague CF-Auto-Root.tar.
I have tried running Odin in both regular and administrator modes.
I have tried flashing PhilZ touch recovery philz_touch_6.12.8-i9500.tar.md5
USB debugging is on, Unknown Sources is on, and I've tried both with and without Verify apps via USB on.
Odin always fails. It will say recovery up at the top, and almost immediately turns red and gives me a giant FAIL every single time. I have even tried Kingo Root and it will hit about 50% and fail. I've reached I point where I'm not sure what else to try. Any advice?

Do you own a SGH-i337 or a GT-I9500?. Looks like a franki anyway.
And if it's a frankenstein, return the phone.
What the other two are trying to say is that you have a frankenstein phone. Meaning that the phone was, probably, once broken and repaired with parts from other S4 models. Which also gives you false reports on the phone model.
Reason for this assumption is that the SGH-I337 is the AT&T version of the GT-I9505. So it can't possibly be I337 and I9500 at the same time
Another problem is that, if I'm not mistaken, AT&T S4 has the bootloader locked. This means you can't use CF-Auto-Root on it. It's even stated on CFAR thread.
You might want to try GT-I9505 root methods. But it's risky with such a phone..
CF-Autoroot if I recall doesn't work because the bootloader prevents access to the system, even in recovery, and the SuperSU payload requires system access. Unless the bootloader is one of the old versions that can have the lock bypassed, pretty much the only option available is to install Safestrap recovery, and use it to bypass the AT&T ROM altogether.
OP, as I just told another guy on the forums about a half hour ago, run, don't walk, and get your money back. There are too many headaches involved with Frankenstein phones, and purchasing one is a horrible deal. You have a locked bootloader, which makes rooting nearly impossible. Installing custom ROMs of any kind requires using up internal storage since you can't change the stock ROM. There's no guarantee that you'll even get LTE service on the phone because the bands don't match what is used in the rest of the world. Lastly, as this is a tampered phone you have no warranty of any kind.

[Q] Need serious help to safely restore i337 to stock everything

I received a new phone since I broke my old GS4 (I337). It was on AT&T 4.2.2 and I rooted it using motochopper. It was fine. It automatically updated while I was asleep to 4.4.2. I had rooted my old GS4 on the same update. So I figured I'll just root it again. So I used the method where I flash the NC1 kernel, use towel root, then flash NJ4 back. Now my WiFi will not turn on, but I do have root access. Also, a message saying "Unauthorized actions have been detected" and it tells me to restart to undo these changes. I don't want to do it in fear of bricking my device. I'm really scared now and I desperately need to fix this. I just want to go back to complete stock 4.4.2. I've tried reflashing the NJ4 file twice and WiFi will still not turn on. I've attached pictures of the notice and my device info. Please help. I cannot brick this device. I will answer to any questions as fast as possible. At the moment, I am debating whether or not to flash this because I am unsure if it will be compatible. Bricking is almost impossible. So stop stressing out. You are in the wrong forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att
Usually you have a wrong modem flashed or something with that problem. Stop stressing out and take your time to find the solution. You will not brick it.
