[Q] Authorize ADB broken digitizer - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I'm on 4.4.2 but not sure what version recovery I have using sgh-i337 S4.
So my phone's digitizer was cracked lastnight. I currently have no other phone I can put my SIM into and need the phone for work emergencies. I have found a program called [email protected] and Android Control to let me use the phone until my replacement digitizer arrives. Problem? ADB is not authorized.
So I found this post and this to help me add my key to the phone so ADB will be authorized.
New problem! Holding Volume up + home + power to enter recovery does not show the phone in ADB at all. I need to then press vol down and then power to enter the "update from adb"
Now in ADB it shows my phone as "sideload" instead of "unauthorized" but when I try to pull build.prop a new error pops up.. "error: closed". Lots of people say it's because of an outdated android sdk, outdated recovery etc..Every solution I've seen have not worked for me.
I read that I won't receive this error if I enable adb in safestrap..BUT! Not only is my digitizer broken, last year my phone dropped in a creek and the bottom buttons no longer work. I've had to use the Button Savior app in the OS. I've found no information about entering safestrap with just volume/home/power buttons.
I'm at the end of my rope with this.

Lol the condition of your phone reminds me of my old galaxy s 4g. Anyways you should be able to use adb just by entering safestrap. You can always go on google play on the computer and install an app to pull files. Are you doing a digitizer only repair? Because that is next to impossible

How can I enter safestrap though? Not sure how to get into it since I can't swipe the screen or use my home buttons lol. Do the pull apps require root auth? I'll have to look later. Nah it has the glass screen and faceplate as well lol.

Use the menu capacitance button to select recovery. The screen assembly costs more than a new phone so yeahh

Huh..I picked mine up on eBay for around $80..even used Red Auroras are still $170+.
But I can't use the capacitive buttons, those are the ones that quit working when the phone fell in the water. Am I screwed?

Hmm my bad then, and yeah, nothing you can do now untill your new screen comes in.

That's too bad. It'll be another two weeks before it comes. Guess I'll have to try and find a cheap replacement in the meantime.

Power button got screwed

Hey ... I have A BIG problem. My power button on my HTC TyTN got screwed. And I don't know how to fix it. Tried dissassembling and the button isn't as elastic as the other ones.
So - any underlay or whatever. Could it help? Anyone who had the same problem?
I checked it ... and the button [the small black thing] doesn't "click" ... so - what can I do with that? My warranty has expired few days ago.
Or, is there another way to get into the bootloader except OK + Power + Softreset? I wanna flash new ROM (which I really need, this one is kinda weird) and I'm afraid of doing it (just for sure if I brick the phone).
You have to take the plunge and flash the unit using RUUwrapper.
Another alternative is using MTTY.exe (or another terminal too over a virtual USB connection) to place the phone in bootloader mode among other things.
If you know how to use JTAG (I'm just learning about this), then you have nothing to wory about.
But ... it has to be connected to activesync. And if thar ROM will be bad (won't boot) or flashing fails, I won't be able to connect phone to RUUwrapper.
Or can mtty put "dead" phone into bootloader?

Yes it can. I do not remember the command right now.
NB: A 'bricked' phone will always be in bootlader mode anyway.
You can run the terminal command "r2sd all" (this works on Charmers/Magicians) (so you'll have to look up your variant) to back up the current ROM to the M2 card (using a RAW writing method) in MTTY.exe (or any other suitable terminal program).
Well, I'm still a bit scared that mtty won't put the phone into bootloader.
And can you please explain me this? "NB: A 'bricked' phone will always be in bootlader mode anyway."
If i have bad XIP or whatever, it just has white screen and nothing happens. Will mtty be able to put phone into bootloader even after this?

Hi Friends,
I screwed my HTC Hermes power button while trying to fix its earlier problem.
Now to turn the backlight on ..i changed the settings and I can now use any button to bring it out of Sleep mode....
I used a program available on this site to enter bootloader.
However, the problem remains when "power button" is to be pressed.
Any advice on how to get over the "Press power button" to start the ROM flashing....
Has it just popped off the board slightly?
Does it click with some applied pressure in a particular area?
I just yesterday repaired the power button on my hermes, it had popped out from the PCB on one side.
Bit of soldering managed to re-attach the metal outer case of the switch to the PCB, all seems to be working again.

ruined my girlfriend's b'day???

Hi guys,
So i bought a brand new white Rogers dream (G1) phone from this guy who said that he tried to flash the G1 with a hero rom and something went wrong and now the phone is dead. When I plug the power cable, the rogers screen comes up and it stays like that (and that disappears after a short while) - the light blinks on the phone though .
I thought I could get my friend phone to fix the phone (and he agreed and asked me to buy it) just in time for my girlfriend's b'day on Saturday but that idiot decided to take off to Montreal for the rest of week.
So, I am left with this phone - and $150 out........I have looked around the internet trying to figure out a solution but I havent been able to get a starting point...
solutions?
Well, first things first, we need to find out if you have a brick or not....
Pull the battery, wait about 15 seconds, put it back in, then hold down the camera button, while still holding down the camera button press the power button until it starts turning on... release the power button, but keep holding the camera button. If it doesn't take you to 1 of 2 different screens, one will have 3 differnet colored bands, the other will have skating android guys at the bottom, you likely have a bricked phone.
It should not take more than a minute to load one of those 2 screens, but for good measure I would give it up to 5 minutes.
The other thing you can do is hold down the home button and power button when turning it on, and it should take you to a black backgrounded screen with a green text menu, that would be a "recovery screen" or it will show you a box with an arrow pointing to a phone, that would be a "you don't have recovery screen"...
If you can get to any of these screens, we can help you from there... I would test the camera plus power button first, since using that screen to flash a working ROM will be the easiest route.
let me get this straight...
You purchased a bricked phone? why would you be so cheap in the first place and buy a used phone as a present? Did you at least try to turn it on first?
If you can get to the tricolor screen I'm sure there is something someone here can do for you.
BTW, I have some unreadable CD's that I am selling which I promise will work in your disc player!

LMAO this is good right here.If you can get a hold of adb there might still be hope for you.
....
i am tried the home/power and camera/power but nothing........still the rogers screen....
and i turned on the phone before i bought it - It was stuck at the rogers screen. The guy gave me a brand new G1 with everything sealed + a tomtom one gps for $150 so it wasnt a bad deal.
I had read somewhere that it isnt really bricked if it turns on.
Be nice - I was just trying to get my girl something more than I can usually afford.
Unless he was stupid, he would not have given you the phone unless it was truly bricked. If camera+power does nothing, then it is most likely a bricked handset. Buy your girlfriend a working handset and eBay this one as bricked.
do you have the sdk installed?? if not you are going to need a g1 to install so you can get the drivers working. now just try what a few others got lucky with. lucky is key here. once its installed and drivers are good. open sdk and cd\ to sdk\tools blah blah. now plug the device in, type the fallowing.
adb shell reboot boot-loader
if it says waiting, then maybe you have luck. so now disconnect the device with the sdk still waiting and plug it back in right away and see if it jump starts the phone into fastboot. you can also try
adb shell reboot recovery
these are for super super lucky ppl. but you never know. in my case it worked. i think if you go screen then you most likely are not bricked but thats just my opinion. when it wont boot at all you and you get the blue LED of DOOOOMMMMM then ya no luck. but eh.

If cam/power and home/power don't work, then it is truly bricked. Your friend could not have fixed it anyway. The only thing you can try is as above: get the android sdk and try to get fastboot to find the phone as it switches on. This very rarely works though.
Also make sure your holding the camera + power button or home + power button long enough.
sold it....
well - i sold it 'as is' on kijiji for the price i bought it for- after trying for about 5-6 hrs (held the camera/power - power/home buttons long enough)
thanks guys again, for your input.
Lesson learned.
Ummm let me get this straight....
You bought a phone
that didn't work
so your buddy could fix it
so you could give it your GF.
But when your buddy left for the week
and you couldn't fix it yourself
you sold it for $150 via the internet
in less than 24 hours?
Either your the "God of Sales", or this whole thing is BS.

[Q] Going back to stock.

Hi, been trying this for a long time now. I need, for warranty purposes, to return back to stock from nand android. Unfortunately i can't get to bootloader, the tri-color screen. My phone boots directly to Magldr. My phone on/off key is broken and i need it to get to the tri-color bootloader.
My question is, if there's any way i can get the stock winmo 6.5 rom flashed from magldr. USB Flasher, or by CWM, NAND Toolkit, or any other trick so that i can get it to repair?? PLEASE BEFORE ANSWERING NOTE THAT I CAN'T GET TO BOOTLOADER, I DON'T HAVE ON/OFF KEY AND THAT KEY IS NEEDED TO GET TO TRICOLOR SCREEN
My microphone is failling and the hard keys also... need them fixed.
Thanks.
You don't need the on/off keys to go into the bootloader, just the volume down rocker.
Press & hold it, then boot up the device.
Tried it a million times... it's a no go!!! It doesn't work, try it on your HD2, push the volume down and reboot the phone by taking the battery out and back in, or by pushing the reset button. That the only way i can reboot my phone. You need to shortly press the on/off button to get to bootloader.
Okay, try to install Android. After that, from within Android reboot your phone using "Reboot" option . And while it is rebooting, keep the volume down button held.
]P.S[ I just tried rebooting from within android, and then holding the volume down, WITHOUT EVEN TOUCHING THE POWER BUTTON and it went directly to the bootloader. Are you sure your volumes are working ?
You have MAGLDR installed. Power off your phone and connect charger with Vol. down button pressed. Your phone will start in bootloader.
I guess my volume keys must be down too... they work on magldr, they work on android but i can't seem to replicate what you guys are saying. But there's no way i can do this from usb flasher inside magldr?? or inside cwm?? or with nand toolkit?? without having to be in bootloader?
Those are some solutions I have been able to gather from various threads, with the same problem :

Okay try this :
Remove battery,
With left hand press and hold volume down,
With the other hand you put the battery back in and press AND hold the power button, so power and volume pressed and hold, wait until you see the bootloader.
This will work (at least it worked on my phone 1min ago)

You may want to check your battery pins, straighten them delicately if they are (even a little) bent.

There is nothing in MAGLDR that can make your HD2 go into bootloader. The only this.g that can get you into the bootloader besides the external hardware buttons is the bootloader.exe that can be run from inside Windows Mobile. It can only be run from inside Windows Mobile. MAGLDR is a custom bootloader that runs after the HSPL bootloader and has no way of communicating with the HSPL bootloader.
At the OP, you may have a faulty volume button ribbon that is causing you not to be able to boot into the bootloader. Check out this thread you will see what I mean. Read post #10

I had the same problem ...
I could not enter the bootmanager in android brief button press to end a call, we moved the menu to shut down, reset, etc, the same menu that appears when you hold down the button longer to stop calling ...
This defect appeared to me after I lay HD2 due to large changes in ambient temperature ...
After a few days of research, opening, drying I removed the defect, so I pulled out and cleaned the keys below the screen (Home, Menu, Back, red and green) and wipe the foil that these pressures are the same buttons ...
My HD2 has been working for 2 weeks with no errors

by the way, it's not possible either to flash radio also if i can't get to bootloader??
flashing with fastboot, and .img files and what not is just for android based devices right??
Correct.
If you can't get to the bootloader, you can't flash anything.
Fastboot is only for Android.
I understand that if you are getting the phone serviced directly by HTC, they won't have a problem with you having Android on it. Buy, if you are going through your service provider, that may be a problem.
good luck
I've been to HTC service. They didn't repaired the phone claiming that there was a non original software on the phone and there was water between the digitizer and the screen. Even though none of the stickers were showing red or pink or other color than white.
In fact there is something trapped inside but it may be alcohol. I had an accident with the phone on a boat. Got wet by a wave and it must have gotten to the phone too that was inside my "purse" (it's a man purse ok?!? those bags that we guys use to carry stuff!!). I didn't noticed and instead of taking the battery at once i tried to turn on the phone... all hell brake loose. I then toke the batt of, and let it rest for a couple of days. Then burried it in rice to absorb the moisture. Then read that alcohol could "push" the water out, and splashed some near the hard keys because they didn't work and i thought that may have been salt water, or salt crystals blocking my keys.
Concluding, the phones works with a few limitations. The only keys that work right is the call and the windows keys and volume keys. And my microphone doesn't work right too. People can only barely hear if i speak directly to it and shout, and still they hear me in the bottom of a well.
I've bought another HD2 on ebay, with a cracked digitizer. Was thinking of maybe taking it for parts, since mine is in mint condition. But i might replace it's digitizer and repair the two phones. I'm only affraid to open it up because it looks very, very difficult.
Thanks anyway for all your support.
Hello, i´m an electrician and i have an idea.
Important is to dry it completely before put the Battery in.
I have opened some "normal" earlier Cellphones (not Touchscreen Phones) and cleaned it with distilled water.
It seems to be impossible to get the functions of the Hardkeys back without open your Phone.
You may try to flush out the corner of the hardkeys with distilled water to remove possible contamination with crystals or minerals that could cause block the keys.
I remain this would be the last chance before opening the phone.
i can not say what happens when you do this, normaly the componets have no problem with water, only the microphone and the cable connection can hold the moisture for a long time.
I hope i could have helped you with this idea. Please be careful it will be a risk the Digitizer is also in the bottom right corner.
if you don´t want to take the risk bring your phone to a independent (not HTC or Service Provider) Phone doctor.
excuse my bad english

[Q] Entering Recovery Mode WITHOUT the Home Button

Hi All,
I'm currently repairing an S5 - G900F and have become a little stuck.
My home button does not work, any suggestions on how to enter the recovery menu without it?
I purchased this mobile from Gumtree, the seller thought it had completely given up the ghost..
I have no access to any functions on the device and am completely locked out. The device starts up fine however does not accept my fingerprint scan as it has the sellers credentials on, I do not have the alternative password.
I try booting into recovery (Vol Up + Menu + Power) however it just goes straight to the normal booting image and starts up
Much love, thanks, Si.
The only other ways I know of are to use an app like quickboot, need to have root though. And if USB debugging is turned on and you have adb set up you can use adb reboot recovery. Maybe someone else has a suggestion though.

Use ADB if you have android sdk installed
Go to the sdk\platform-tools folder, hold the shift key on your PC and right click the mouse button then select Open Command Prompt Here
Plug in the phone, you need to have adb debugging enabled in Developer Options, then in the CMD window type adb reboot recovery press the return key
The phone will reboot into recovery mode

Hey Detection, Yeah I have, here's the scenario:
I bought the phone from Gumtree, it was in terrible condition, I've replaced the USB port as this was the reason the seller wanted rid of it, he believed it had broken completely so for £30 I decided to buy it just in case it was fixable. Once I changed the USB port I found it charged, the LCD was next so I found a bargain on eBay for an OEM screen and changed that, decided to replace the mid chassis and rear cover as well, I also replaced the front camera module and rear camera lens. It looks mint now however it boots with his old setup credentials (including fingerprint lock) which I can't bypass!!
The install of the new LCD went smoothly, I took all of the protective plastic strips from the electrical circuits and one from the home button. It will read my fingerprint scan and tells me it's not matched and just locks me out. When I turn the phone off, hold down vol up, home button and power I can't access the boot menu..

Literally Volume Up, Menu and Power. I've tried a number of variants with no luck. I'm beginning to think I have a defective LCD to be honest as I can't get into download mode either. I thought it strange that the menu button can read my fingerprint scan however I think there are two separate sensors for both pressing and scanning.
I don't really want to remove the LCD now I've fitted it but I may have to! I can't see any other option

You can completely reset the phone using Samsung Kies, run Kies and go to Tools > Firmware Upgrade and Installation then follow the on screen instructions
This procedure wipes all the data from the phone and installs the latest firmware version.
Edit :- Just though that this might require you to manually enter recovery mode, if it does then this wont help.

Solved: 2nd Hand Galaxy S5 locked

Hi!
To make a long story short. I bought a second hand Galaxy S5 with a busted screen and heavily dented frame. I replaced the screen and the frame, screen works fine but after boot I found two problems:
Volume up/down don't seem to work (or the phone is blocked by the carrier?)
Phone is blocked via pattern
I contacted the previous owner but he doesn't remember his pattern (it took me two months until I found the parts I wanted and repaired the phone) and also doesn't remember his PIN. And since the volume keys don't work I can't enter neither in Recovery nor in Download mode.
The phone is being recognized in my computer, I tried to make the phone boot with adb but since it's locked it doesn't work. I guess the USB debug options is not switched on.
Is there any alternative method to make the phone boot into recovery? I'm fairly new with adb so is there is a way please post dumb-proof instructions :silly:
Thanks a lot in advance!
Just to double check you are using the correct key combo
Recovery: Volume Up & Home & Power
Download: Volume Down & Home & Power
I can't think of anything off hand, so would concentrate on trying to get those buttons repaired
Possible you have either dislodged something during the repair, or whatever damaged the screen / chassis did

To remove the S5 screen you need first to warm it up with a heat gun, the AMOLED screen is very sensitive to heat and extremely thin, I'm quite sure that the new screen won't survive my removal attempt according to what I read in the web (to remove the old one I just used a hair dryer, since it was already broken I did not need to be much careful).
Additionally I used a strong 3M double sided tape to install the new one.
The sensors for the volume keys seem to be on the frame (according to my poor visual analysis), so if I need to buy a new frame (and probably a new screen) I may end up looking for a new S5 to get repaired...

Just remembered as I was typing, you need a USB Jig, insert that into the USB port when the phone is powered off, and it forces the phone into download mode without the need for buttons
Either make your own (I did for the S4 with a dead power button) or buy for a couple £ on ebay

Great, I ordered one from ebay but was going to take a week, so went to the town and bought the resistors and a cheap USB lead, made one while I waited, so I have a couple here now too
Yea let us know how you get on, if the volume keys are physically dead, I'm sure there will be plenty of apps you can use to remap volume to soft keys
I also ordered two because one is from HK, the other from Europe
(what does not rule out the possibility that the HK one arrives first)
Just thinking out loud, could it be that the carrier (Swisscom in this case) blocks a device in order not to enter in Recovery/Download mode? Is this technically possible?

No they don't have that low level access to stop buttons working before the ROM loads, they could block an IMEI, so the phone won't work on the network any longer, but not physical buttons
Download mode is available even if you wipe ROM & Recovery, nothing to do with the carriers
Ok, I got the Jig, plug straight into the phone and it boots in Download Mode!!
BUT!! I open Odin, flash the new 6.0.1 Firmware and after the reboot the S5 is asking for the pattern again!!
I guess I'm missing something with Odin, which one of the options sets the system back to its delivery status? Re-Partition?
Thanks a lot in advance for the help!
Cheers

Check the "NAND Erase All" option, should wipe the phone back to factory settings
Did that, unfortunately the S5 now doesn't boot. It freezes at the start screen, I let it "hang" for 40 minutes, then removed the battery, press the power button for about 30 seconds, put the battery again and rebooted.
It's still hanging (15 minutes so far...)

Did you flash the ROM again without that box checked, once you had done the wipe? Try that (Some people saying to flash a few times)
Next step I'd try firmware recovery with KIES
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/
Try that, then if still having problems, try below
Flash the ROM with the PIT file for that model S5
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52329647&postcount=2
PIT in PIT section
ROM in AP
Flash together
Uncheck the Wipe NAND box first, make sure repartition checks itself once you add the PIT file
Which model S5 is it ?
