[Q] Using icons for contacts - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there an app that will allow me to use icons as an image for phone contacts?
I want to eliminate that default phone contact image (ie the sketched face) for contacts. I know how to replace that default image with a photo. What I want do do is use different icons (eg from icon packs and app icons) that are relavent to different contacts to replace that default image. I can't seem to find anything that will let me use anything other than a photo as a replacement.
Also, what app is recommended to transfer contacts from a sim card to a phone (without ending up with duplicate contacts)? I can't find an option on the Note 4 to do it for me.
regards

Failing that, is there an app that will allow me to extract an icon from an Icon pack (or an app) and save it as it as an image file that I can then use for a contact image please?

HI ,
my suggestion is very simple .( if you really want to )
Unzip /extract your icon pack ( apk ) with eg. 7 zip ,rar etc and if you look inside relavant folders ,you might find what you looking for ? Make sure to check in all folders ( APK is basically an zip file .. so no need to change extention to zip ,just extract )
Otherwise look on websites like this
http://www.iconarchive.com/tag/pc
that have lots of free icons for pc/phone available for download and you can select png format etc and download , select as image file ..etc etc
I use Nova launcher ,thus very easy to custom change icons ..(.have done it many times to change contacts or any app icon i prefer ) For me it works 100 % .,no problems /issue .
good luck

Thanks for the tip. That works fine.

To prevent displaying duplicate contacts, go to contacts》settings》Contacts to Display, then choose phone only or your google or whatever account

Thanks, I understand what you saying but I want to display contacts from all accounts including those on my SIM card (and there is no option to change the image associated with those SIM contacts). I can transfer contacts from the SIM to my phone but that creates duplicate contacts. If there was an option to display everything except SIM card contacts that would be fine. I guess I could transfer all contacts to a single account but it seems like a bit of a hassle. I was hoping there might be an easier way.

I know what you mean but I dont know the answer. That is why I sync all my contacts to my google account then only choose to display contacts from that account. This way when I format or reset my phone, contacts can be restored in a split second.

Removing Windows Live Contacts

I made a mistake, a bad bad mistake of synchronizing my windows live contacts to my ALL contacts. everytime i delete those WL contacts it will return some way or another. IS there anyway to not letting them synchronizing again other than a wipe?
I cant seem to untick the boxes in WLM mobile
Same here, and is it possible that deleting contacts only works one-by-one???
i want to delete all my contacts (NOT SIM CONTACTS) then copy them back again via sim manager but i cant even select all...
Any suggestion?
Thx
ok, just found out.
by signing out and then sign in back again via creation of new account option ( sign in back your old account), all your sync contacts will disappear
just remember not to select the sync options again.
nice, it worked... thanx
anyway, any suggestion for multiple selection of deleting contacts? and my other problem that in sim manager there's a "/1" sign at the end of all contact names... dont u have same issue?

How to add Sense contacts to quick links?

So the question is, I want to use a contacts button that uses the Sense contacts on my quick links rather than have a People's tab. But the problem is when I go through CHT's add/remove I only see the standard winmo contacts (Referring to the app not individual persons). I tried using Resco File Explorer search to see if I could find the .exe but couldn't figure out which one it could be.

I think you have to copy your contacts to the phone because it will not see your sim contacts. I just did what you where wanting to do and it worked...but when I first got my phone I copied all the contacts to the phone and hid the sim contacts and it shows all my contacts and keeps the pictures in the quicklinks icon. Hope this helps
Thanks for the reply, but once again I'm not looking for individual contacts. I'm looking to use the full sense contacts app.

I am confused you are trying to make a quicklink that will take you to the people tab?! You might just want to make the people tab be one of the first ones...not sure what the order you have you tabs in but you can for to start settings personalize homescreen tabs..and move it.

Backup Assistant on Redemptive Revolution

First off I am a total newb so please excuse me for being stupid.
I just rooted my phone with the help of a friend (my phone was force closing everything), we used titanium backup and installed the new rom.
The problem is that I do not have contacts in the new rom. I restored using the backup file and the contacts are still not listed in people. Everyone is there when I open up 'phone' and I can type in and call people as if they are a contact, but they arent in listed in 'people' The phone still has all the same problems in the original restore so I would definitely like to use the new rom.
can I used backup assistant to get my contacts on the new rom? How do I do it?
Thanks.
First thing I would go to is the people icon, select menu, then view. See if the folder that has contacts listed is checked off.
There should be no reason you can see the contacts when you use PHONE but not people.
The other thing you should do is have all your contacts sync'd with Google. When you flash a ROM, you should Backup existing and wipe all. You will then need to re-setup all your settings/Email accounts. If you use Titanuim, you should use it to install apps only, not data as well.
If you have all your contacts as Google contacts, when you re-set up your GMAIL, it will automatically re-load your contacts.

What Rom are you running? If you are on Redemptive like the OP stated they were, after you flash the Rom (2.1.2 or 2.1.3), there will be a folder on your SD Card named Redemptive. In that folder is a flashable zip for BU Assistant.
As I stated in my previous post, Syncing with Google it the easiest way to do this. I do not have anybody saved under PHONE contacts, they are all Google or Exchange Active Sync.

yeah. I found it. i dont like syncing with Google though
Backup Assistant created issues for me though because I would be getting 3 or 4 duplicate entries for the same person. Even though you can link the entries together which is very convenient, if you have to edit one you would get a choice of editing the home number under google and sometime 2 or 3 copies of the other number listed under "phone". What I would do is export a copy of the contacts to the SD card as a csv file, and then import them again immediately under the "google" option. That way everything you have is all under one label.

I always use the phone one.
Phone means that the contact will be saved in your phone's internal memory. It won't be affected if you change sims or delete your google acct.
Google means that the contact will be saved in your google acct, you can access it from anywhere.
SIM means that the contact will be saved in your SIM directory. That way, if you insert your sim in another phone, you would still have the contact's details.
By the way, i don't think it's related to android OS at all or galaxy y....please use the general forum (in General Discussion) for these...

I recommend saving to your google account.
This way all your contacts will be intact, in case you lose the SIM or brick your phone.
Also I have found that making changes to a contact using your browser interface (firefox, chrome etc) is much easier than trying to make changes on screen.
Turning on sync will ensure that your contacts are synced with your phone. If you own more than one android device, you'll get the contacts synched to all of them.

Can't change contact pictures

Just got the G4...anyone else not able to change the contact pictures? It let's me go through the motions but doesn't actually save the added/changed picture. WTF???
Edit - Although I can't change/add contact photos on the phone itself, I can change them from within Google Voice and have them sync up that way. While that's fine and dandy, I have to say I don't like it! I have no choice to have the contacts on my phone...they are automatically synced to my Google account. This is yet another MM "feature" I don't want. Whatever, that's me. I guess I have to adapt. I think KK was/is my favorite Android OS.

I've added photos to all my contacts with no problem. I'm not sure what your problem could be but I have 2 G4's that I've added photos to.
Are your contacts saved to your phone only or on your Gmail? I know if you use outlook or Yahoo they can be finicky. It's not a MM thing. It's the standard Google contacts app it may just be where your saving your contacts. I too have no issues saving pictures to them.
For the past 5 years I have only had my contacts on my phone. I export/import (via vcf file) anytime I get a new phone or switch roms. When I imported to the G4 I don't recall it asking to import to the phone or Google. It's my preference to have contacts on the phone...that being said, I have made my changes in Google & have synced to my phone. In the long run I have achieved what I wanted but still cannot change the picture on the phone itself. I also see no option to transfer/display contacts on the phone. Whatever.
Thanks for your input.

When you click on a contract and then go to edit mode by clicking on the pencil looking icon, you don't have a camera symbol near where you would have a contact picture?

Yes, the camera symbol is there. I can browse my gallery, select a picture, and crop it. I click the check mark to save it but it doesn't stick.
I can not change/add contact pictures on the phone. I have to do it through Gmail/Voice online then sync.
That's odd, where is the default save location for your pictures?
SD Card > DCIM. Same as I've always used.

It shouldn't matter but for grins have you tried setting a contact pic from internal storage?
