Backup Assistant on Redemptive Revolution - Droid Incredible General

First off I am a total newb so please excuse me for being stupid.
I just rooted my phone with the help of a friend (my phone was force closing everything), we used titanium backup and installed the new rom.
The problem is that I do not have contacts in the new rom. I restored using the backup file and the contacts are still not listed in people. Everyone is there when I open up 'phone' and I can type in and call people as if they are a contact, but they arent in listed in 'people' The phone still has all the same problems in the original restore so I would definitely like to use the new rom.
can I used backup assistant to get my contacts on the new rom? How do I do it?
Thanks.

First thing I would go to is the people icon, select menu, then view. See if the folder that has contacts listed is checked off.
There should be no reason you can see the contacts when you use PHONE but not people.
The other thing you should do is have all your contacts sync'd with Google. When you flash a ROM, you should Backup existing and wipe all. You will then need to re-setup all your settings/Email accounts. If you use Titanuim, you should use it to install apps only, not data as well.
If you have all your contacts as Google contacts, when you re-set up your GMAIL, it will automatically re-load your contacts.

What Rom are you running? If you are on Redemptive like the OP stated they were, after you flash the Rom (2.1.2 or 2.1.3), there will be a folder on your SD Card named Redemptive. In that folder is a flashable zip for BU Assistant.
As I stated in my previous post, Syncing with Google it the easiest way to do this. I do not have anybody saved under PHONE contacts, they are all Google or Exchange Active Sync.

yeah. I found it. i dont like syncing with Google though

Backup Assistant created issues for me though because I would be getting 3 or 4 duplicate entries for the same person. Even though you can link the entries together which is very convenient, if you have to edit one you would get a choice of editing the home number under google and sometime 2 or 3 copies of the other number listed under "phone". What I would do is export a copy of the contacts to the SD card as a csv file, and then import them again immediately under the "google" option. That way everything you have is all under one label.

Thanks for your time.

You can use SPB backup. The only thing is everytime I restore my contacts It restores every contact twice and I have to go through and erase them. Pim backup backs up contacts but I dont know how to carry over the facebook links.
Yea I know how to backup my contacts. Infact they sync to outlook. I just dont want to have to restore the facebook links everytime.
Thanks for your reply
this would be very helpful for me also. i too am an energy rom user & would luv to know how to backup the facebook links. dscottjr81 can you verify SPBbackup does work for this?? i also wonder if Sprite Backup would work? i know PIMbackup does not carry over the facebook integration.
anyone?
maybe the facebook stuff is in the facebook.vol in your root directory? \facebook.vol
just try it
facebook.vol is for the facebook application produced by microsoft.
you use the link your contacts in the manila contacts page, right?
I have nothing else of facebook installed, and have the \FacebookInfo.vol on my phone, so I think thats one of the files for the "manila facebook" ..
but here is another solution: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538513
Il back that file up and restore it see if it works. Il also use your link in the event it dosnt work.
Thanks very much.
I have over 75+ facebook links in my phone, so having to do them all again would of been very troublesome for me. I did however figure out how to backup all of the links and current PIM information for your phone.
Backing up and Restoring the ENTIRE PIM(Calendar, Contacts, Tasks) and the Facebookinfo Vol file is the only way to get your Links back intact.
Before you do this, you should do the following things to prepare for the restore. If you have an active sync partnership with a computer allready, in your active sync settings on the PPC for that connection, set you sync conflict mode to "Keep items on my device". This will prevent dupes from appearing in outlook on your PC as well as on your phone. If your synced with an Exchange server or google mobile, unfortunately the Exchange connector lacks this feature. You'll just have to manually De-Dupe those.. Sorry.
When all of this is done, Download and Install Total Commander (Google it). Open total commander and in the root of your device, rename the "pim.vol" and "facebookinfo.vol" files (If they exist. If not, then fill out your personal card and link atleast one facebook contact). Once these are renamed, copy your old pim.vol and facebookinfo.vol files into the root, and soft reset. You should now have all your contacts, tasks, calendar entry's, and facebook links.
Edit: I just checked my gmail account after doing this method (Which is being synced via the exchange connector) and I only found a few dupes which may of been left over. Post your experience if you do this as well.
Try using microsoft my phone, looking at the details it has synced to my account it saves the fb links as a note, ive not reflashed the phone since i got all my links connected, i only got the phone yesterday and am trying out my 1st rom since moving over from the Kaiser. Loving the diamond compared to my old trusty heavy Kaiser.
I have always used Microsoft my phone for backing up, i like the sync my location as if i ever loose of get my phone stolen at the press of a button it will tell me where it is

My phone does not backup/restore facebook links. I'm not sure if it is even aware that manila creates them. Where did you see this in details? The sync details in my phone is very basic and doesn't say anything that detailed. When I look at the sync settings in the latest version of my phone, it doesn't even give an option to backup notes, and there is no mention of notes in the online profile either. Where did you see this?

Grabbing contacts from nandroid backup, different rom

i was running modaco 2.2 for a few days, then i installed aosp 1.6 which i like a LOT better. I did a nandroid backup before the 1.6 install, and then did a wipe.
now, is there any way to get my contacts that were backed up with nandroid onto my current rom? i have a backup of modaco and an aosp backup, i need to get JUST the contacts out of my modaco backup...
:/
Try mounting the SD to your computer, going into the nandroid folder, and see what you can find.
- restore your Nandroid backup
- back up your contacts with a known working app (e.g., WaveSecure)
- zap back to the AOSP ROM
In the future, I recommend syncing your contacts with Google... MUCH easier to manage. Pay attention to the "sync groups" option to avoid syncing contacts you don't want.

i was thinking about restoring the backup, then syncing all contacts with google, restoring the 1.6 backup, and importing...
another question real quick; in aosp1.6 how can i get the contacts app that i am used to, that syncs with facebook? is it possible?

I thought syncing with google is one-way. That is, the phone pulls contacts from your google contacts but does not update your google contacts with new numbers/contacts you add on your phone. If I am incorrect, I'd like to know how to keep the contacts both on my phone and google in sync.

I can add as a google contact on my phone when I log in later online its their...its how several of my contacts have been put into Gmail. Also, when I need to add a new one with lots of contact info I type it on at the gmail website, then it appears on my phone shortly after.
I think that appointments are only one way.

Appointments sync both ways.
Syncing contacts with google is your friend, even if you don't like the idea of backing up contacts in the clouds. I'd suggest making backups online and on your desktop. A little overkill, but you never know if you'll lose one or the other

On your phone open up your contacts app and using the trackball scroll to the right until you highlight "groups". From there, you can press Menu and be given the options to sync whichever contacts you want. Now, since your contact list is already establish you'll have to do some re-arranging so everything is organized both on the phone and online.

A new answer to an old question...
If I should just leave this thread alone and make a tutorial, let me know. I was searching for the answer to the question in the OP, and when I couldn't find an answer, I just messed with it for a while. This is for anyone else who ever is looking for this and does a search that pulls this up like I did...
1) Be rooted, have a root file explorer on your phone, and have 7zip on your computer,
2) Put your SD with the Nandroid backup in your computer. Open the backup with 7zip.
3) In 7zip open the data.ext4.tar file.
4) Navigate to ~/data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/
5) Pull the databases folder out of the Nandroid backup
Now that you have the databases folder out of the backup, you need to push that to your phone. There are several ways to do this, (adb etc...) but here is one way.
1) Plug your phone in to your computer and enable USB Mass Storage.
2) Drag the folder into your phone somewhere where you will be able to find it.
3) Use your root file explorer to copy the databases folder from your backup, and replace the current databases folder located at ~/data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/
VIOLA!
When you open your contacts, all your old contacts from the Nandroid backup will be there.
*** Please let me know if I should put this somewhere else. I know resurrecting an old thread isn't usually good, as it doesn't help the OP. I can post a tutorial if needed, just let me know what forum to put it in, I am new around here. Hopefully this will help someone in the future who has this question. I wasn't able to find it anywhere.
wow your an idiot thx for bumping a thread thats over a year and this shouldnt even matter u can back up all your contacs on your sd card or through your google acount so epic fail for u
Wow man, I already said sorry in advance for pulling up an old thread. There are times where your fancy little backup idea doesn't work out, especially if it isn't your phone, or its too late... I searched for a long time for a way to do this and didn't find anything.
If my post didn't help you, that's your loss, but don't flame me for trying to help guys in the future...
And your fail comment doesn't quite account for all situations. Chill out and be a little more receptive. I'm new to the forums, and that right there makes we want to say "screw helping people" --- I don't think this is the message you would like to send to new members of a forum that you might ask questions on some day.
I'll take my advice elsewhere... As for you, go read a forum that helps you and quit flaming me.
Can we have a moderator delete my original post? Clearly it wasn't appreciated.

You are not the only one with the issue. All of Cyanogen's ROM are AOSP (android open source project). They do not have this feature. That is a feature added to the MySense that T-Mo bloats this phone with.
There is really nothing you can do unless you mind using a MySense based ROM.
wait...so how do all these people add the contacts back on their phones....I dont understand...there must be an easy way.

most, if not all, of our contacts on on our Google account. and when we log into the google account [on the phone] it automatically pushes the contacts that are on our account to the phone.
it's a "no touch" method. We just log in and Google takes care of the rest.
If it is possible to extract the contacts from the t-mo website as a .cvs file you may be able to bulk import them to your google account but i dunno. I used Google Sync on my blackberry prior to owning an Android so i never had that problem.
I went to tmobile site and from what I see there is no cvs...but I could be wrong. Aside from that...how can I get my contacts back to the phone...?

here is a way to export to csv...dont know how well it works...
http://yincrash.livejournal.com/188605.html
I just used the UiA Backup Contacts app from the market on my wifes phone, and imported the csv output into her Google account...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
This is hopeless....I cant believe what a problem this is turning into. I might be able togo back to the Ice rom and get my contacts but the problem Im have then is...I cant get the contacts to sync with google.
Meaning....for example...I have my wifes phone, which is not flashed yet so as a practice run, I tried to sync her contacts to gmail/google and it will not take...if I can get this to work, they I might be able to fix this.
Any ideas on getting atleast my wifes phone to sync with google?
This is a pain to do, but it may help...
You can print your T-mo contacts from the T-mo website. If you install a pdf printer driver (neevia docuprinter), you can print the contacts to pdf. You can then select the data on the pdf, and cut and paste into a csv, and import into your Google contacts.
You will only get the basic information, like name, cell number, email, etc...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
First thing I did when I got this phone was disabled tmo sync so all my numbers default to google. Sorry, man. I feel your pain. You sure there's no way to export contacts from the tmo website? I bet there is.

If we did bet you would have lost...Lol, here is the problem
I spent about 1 hour on the phone with a tmobile smart phone tech...we both logged into my tmobile acct and looked at the contacts, which were about 250. He was shocked...as was I, that there was NO export...only import. We both dont understand why they would make it this way but its dumb.
ok...so he had me do one method which didnt work well but I will post it here, maybe someone might be able to fine tune it.
So, the tech had me goto my "manage contacts" page. Then look for an option to print, once that window opens you hold down ctrl+A...this will highlight all your contacts. The right click and copy.
Next, open up excel and paste into the first column "A1". Then you have to adjust each column just a little to make the names and numbers fit.
Next, you goto save as, and choose "CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv)"
Next you goto gmail and choose import and browse to the file you just created. This will add all your contacts however here comes the part, maybe someone else can figure how to fix...when you import the contacts, it doesnt put the numbers in the right spot...it puts them in the "Notes" section.
So you would then have to goto each name and copy and paste into the correct section...yes I know thats alot of work, but it beats entering in each number by hand.
Also, I'm not some tech...Im still new and make no claim to be smart with this...so save the put down remarks.
The other option which I did...was I just flashed back to my first rom "Ice"...then I Exported contacts to SD card...next you flash the rom you want...go thru the steps the guides tell you, when done, setup google and sync...this will add all contacts.
*** Make sure thu, that when you add NEW contacts to your phone that you create under the google acct. Meaning, when you open up the new contact window, you add the name of person and then (depending on custom rom) you can choose to create under tmobile or google...you want to choose google.
And thats it...

Contacts ??

I'm not sure wat went wrong there,
But apparently sync deleted few of my contacts and allocated different names for few people (I assume its sync cause I've not done anything manually). Overall contact list is being pretty weird.
Anyone experienced the same?

What did u do last? What ROM? Do you backup? Do you save contacts to phone instead of Google? Need more info.
Do you BONSAI?
I'm on frozen syndicate rom.
And this has been happening for last 2 days I suppose.
Before that most probably I did was -- Fix permissions (from recovery)
and took backup -- titanium (These are the only things I suppose r different than installing and using apps).
I guess messed up contacts happened before as well but with sync it used to fix itself, however this time its different..
All contacts r on google, fb or twitter (none on phone).
Thanks
when I change roms I always just before flashing do a export of contacts via (contact/menu/import,export) after flashing I just import my contacts and all is well.
I've had this problem with 2 android phones, but not all of them. I ended up going through the contacts settings and hitting display for ALL, insteas of just favorite (or the default option). It seemed to work after that.
I think the problem is when adding contacts, when you save them to the phone, sync erases them when syncing contacts from the google account. A major flaw in my book.
hmm,
I'll try few things and let u guys know if something fixes it
Looks like exporting and importing them back seems a good option
Thanks

I had to restore them from an sd card export then restore contact data from Titanium to get the ringtones and pics back, then it stuck after that. Before that it was a fight to keep the contacts on.
So, when you get them all there, export to sd card then import them back and then restore the titanium data for them.
I never restored contacts from titanium but sounds like a good option
so apparently it was lookout and thankfully they have restore option, I need to restore 1084 :-o contacts

google sync issues

my phone has stopped syncing from phone> gmail (at least as far as contacts go) gmail>phone works fine. if i change a last name, add a phone number to a contact on the phone it does not update the contact list in gmail. in fact gmail will override the changes on the phone and put it back the way it was. is there a setting somewhere where the 2 actually sync?

stupid samsung... i'm trying to flash a rom and i'm afraid i'm gonna lose numbers now
Well.... how are you saving contacts on your device? When you create a new contact on the device, are you selecting Google or Phone?
If you select Phone, then it won't sync over to Google because the contacts are locally saved.
If you select Google, then everything is saved on their servers and then replicated to your device.

To export your contacts on your phone, the breadcrumbs are: Contacts > Menu key > Import/Export > Export to SD card.
After that you can import those directly into Google contacts on the webpage.
If you don't want to use Google, then just import that export file into contacts on your device after your flash.
You could use a backup application like Titanium Backup or MyBackup Root.
