that is the only way to obtain root currently. there is no way to root a clean install of 5.0.1. if you want root, you will have to root while on a kit kat build then update to 5.0.1

If you have the I337m then you should be able to use CF-Auto Root, though I don't know if it's been updated for lollipop on your specific variant.
For the i337m you can do this. Either use cf auto root or you can first install a custom recovery and then flash SuperSu from the recovery.

CF-Auto-Root works with the SGH-i337M (Bell) on Android 4 and 5.
Just don't go in Recovery Mode afterwards otherwise it'll break your installation and render your device unusable.

so the chain link of 4.4.2 works on 5.0
and what do you mean going into recovery mod will break my phone
all i do is root and i previously rooted my phone and have gone in recover mod to check my knox flag since when cant you go into recovery mode ?
I'm just warning you. I don't know why. I can't use my phone since I booted in recovery mode after running a rooted stock fw for a while. We have the same device.
sounds as if you have an error either in the absence of a custom recovery or the kernal. Pull the battery, wait 30 seconds at least. Go into download mode, use Odin to reflash the stock Bell OC4 firmware but leave auto-boot unchecked -- wait until Odin goes green and says pass -- this can be quite a wait. Pull the battery. Restart the phone. Don't be surprised if it goes into stock recovery on first boot -- let hte phone do its thing to get itself sorted. Set the phone up in stock mode first.
Oh! Thanks! As it turns out, it wasn't the CF-Auto-Root which ****ed it up. I actually tried to install CyanogenMod the day after and it failed. I thought it failed cleanly and nothing was pushed to my phone, but I was wrong. So, have fun, OP!

Hey guys, I'm pretty new here and new to rooting devices. I recently just rooted my Samsung Galaxy S 4 SGH-1337 (At&t) with the new "TowelRoot" and then using Super SU to finish the root. I has a question when it came to installing the custom recovery Philz Touch. I have the 4 most recent versions of PT and using Odin v3.09 and v3.07 I am still unable to correctly install the recovery. When I try starting the process I get a "Leave CS" in the bottom left of the Odin window, and when I start the process fails? I've noticed when I go into download mode on my S 4 the phone tells me on the the official binary and official operating system. If I am rooted should that say something else? I have checked the Root Checker app and it says I am in fact rooted.
Other solutions I've already got advice and still unable:
- I'm using my out of box charging cable.
- I am pressing start after I ad the AP in Odin.
- The phone is in Download mode.
Can anyone help me out and assist me? This is super annoying and I would love to figure it out soon. Thank you in advance!

Since towel root worked in your phone I'm assuming you're on firmware nc1. This can not have a custom recovery installed. In fact you probably erased your stock recovery trying these other ones. I suggest using odin to flash nb1 then update back to nc1 and if you want a recovery yo install another rom (only touchwiz based roms) you'll to use safestrap. That is the only option at this time.

Thanks for the response. I am on firmware NC1. After posting I have read that there is a new bootlocker (?) that was pushed on the 4.4.2 update preventing people from actually installing custom recovery and other things. There is a workaround going to an older version to then root and get a custom recovery, but I definitely don't have the knowledge of what to do.
I'm not sure what you mean by me probably erasing my stock recovery? Are you saying if I try and restore my device it will not work?

When you tried to install the custom recovery it more than likely erased your stock recovery and the only way to get it back is to flash nb1. And going to an older version is no longer possible. Once you update and the bootloader is updated you're no longer able to revert to an older bootloader. Trying to do so could brick your phone

Again, thank you for responding to me. I understand what you are saying now about me possibly deleting my stock recovery. I didn't go very far i the process and I'm fairly sure I didn't for the simple reason that it did not work. I can definitely be wrong and you are probably more right on this situation than I am.
Thank you for the heads up with the older version not possibly anymore.
Do you know any confirmed ways of rooting and flashing a custom recovery since 4.4.2? If not I guess I'm just going to wait a bit for a confirmed method.

Before proceeding check to make sure your stock recovery is still intact (power phone off, wait 10 seconds, power on while holding volume up/home button/power if you boot into recovery you're fine and can proceed with towel root (just Google it it'll come up right away) download and install the apk on your phone and it'll root your phone for you. Lollipop Update for SGH-I337M
Hello guys, I rooted my Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M a few weeks ago... I have android 4.4.2 and want to update to lollipop (oficial one) but when I try to use the OTA update I get the message "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available"... Does anyone know when is going to be released the oficial update or where can I get it? I don't want to use custom ROMs that may not work or are not official.
Thank you!!

Look at sammobile.com. I see Verizon has it up but they're the only ones so far. The ota generally won't work if you're rooted. You could try unrooting in supersu then take the ota.
Edit, fido has it up too!

Thanks man... I already tried to do the unrooting using supers and didn't work
If some could post when the oficial firmware is released it will be very useful!!
I, CF-Auto rooted it with wrong model!!!
I made a mistake...
I downloaded the wrong Cf-Auto-root file for my device and then I flashed it with Odin: result
Phone is not bricked but when I run Root checker, I get this error message:
"Sorry, Root access is not properly installed on this device"
So what I did was I tried to cf auto root Odin with the proper model from chain fire website (sgh-i337m) and no luck, I still get
same error message from Root Checker.
Am I screwed or is there a way to revert everything back ?

booted recovery mode, phone now unusable
Using CF-Auto-Root, I successfully rooted my phone updated to Android 5. Everything was running fine until I booted in Recovery mode just to look around (out of curiosity). I didn't select anything, only 'reboot'. When the boot sequence ends now, I can only see white alert boxes on a black background listing every apps that boots at startup accompanied with the phrase 'has stopped working'.
sounds as if you have an error either in the absence of a custom recovery or the kernal. Pull the battery, wait 30 seconds at least. Restart the phone. Don't be surprised if it goes into stock recovery on first boot -- let the phone do its thing to get itself sorted. Set the phone up in stock mode first.
Then go back into Odin, flash a custom recovery and install SuperSu using a zip file flash from within that custom recovery.
I thought CF-Auto-Root was to blame but it's actually the CyanogenMod auto-installer. I thought it failed cleanly and nothing was pushed to my phone, but I was wrong. Thanks!
pit partition
I everyone, I tried to unroot my canadian s4 and now bricked it and stuck in the downloading screen. when trying odin, I get the "there is no PIT partition". How do I fix that please?
there are general instructions posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265477 you will need the PIT file specific to your model of S4 and the correct firmware rather than the files listed in that guide if your model is not the 9505 i.e. if it is i337 or i337m -- make sure you download the correct PIT and firmware files for your model first then follow the instructions in that guide using the appropriate files for your phone
Actually I found a video on youtube and contacted the guy on twitter. he suggested changing out the port and cable. i also switched to a win 7 computer vs. win 8 and using official samsung usb cables and was able to unroot and also update to lollipop.
Dear all,
first of all thanks again to this great community! there's so much here on xda...
and here my situation. I admit I am a bit rusty with flashing roms for samsung devices. I did root and flash roms for the galaxy S1, the S2 (the phone I loved the most so far) and the S3. But then I jumped to LG G2, then Sony with the Z2 and the Z3.
But my wife has an ATT Samsung Galaxy S4 and I need to catch up with Samsung modding.
I did root her phone 6 months ago. But now I would like to update to KitKat and I am a little lost.
Is there any way to upgrade from rooted 4.2.2 MF3 to 4.4.4 NJ4?
I found this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2717175
but it's for non-rooted MF3.
I do understand that, since I already have root, I need to install the Safestrap Recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448925
First issue: in the introduction @Hashcode mentions the risk for bootloop if ENCRYPTION is ENABLED. how do I know if that applies to me?
Then, if I succeed and install Safestrap 3.65 and I can access recovery, how do I proceed to install 4.4.4?
In the Safestrap post it is written "IF YOU'RE ON MF3 ONLY USE ROMS BASED ON MF3" so... how do I move forward?
Thanks a lot for the help!!!

If you don't know about encryption, you probably haven't enabled it. The easiest way is to ODIN to NB1 and then root from there. You'll lose your data so make sure to back up anything you want, including backing up your internal storage to another SD card or your computer. You might be able to jump to NB1 with the ROM here but I don't know if it flashes all the bootloader parts you'd need nor do I know if that would keep your data.
Thanks DeadlySin9!
I'm ok with flashing to NB1 with ODIN as I don't need to keep data.
Still few questions:
1. can I just flash with ODIN directly from MF3 to NB1?
2. OK if I flash the second file in this topic (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2674223) and then root?
3. this brings me to NB1 4.4.2. with root. How do I jump to NJ4 4.4.4 from there?
Thanks again!!
Ok. I did some further reading. This is what I found out to update from MF3 to NJ4.
1. Flash with Odin NB1 stock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/guide-odin-to-stock-updating-rooting-t2926642
2. Take the NJ4 OTA update
3. Flash with Odin NC1 kernel
4. Root using Towelroot
5. Flash with Odin NJ4 kernel
This should leave me with rooted NJ4.
Can anybody confirm I got the steps right?
Thanks again!
correct
Thats correct all the steps are right but if you are interested in having the safestrap recocery you will have to install that first before flashing the NJ4 kernel
Thanks @brownie9987!
I'm not sure I need Safestrap. My goal is to have a clean de-bloated stock 4.4.4 rom. So I plan to root and then uninstall all the samsung bloatware. Do you recommend otherwise?
thanks!
My opinion
Well the only problem I see if you take that route is that once you use towelroot to root youre device and just install flash the nj4 kernel youre still going to have samsung knox on youre device and once you reboot it will remove youre root I personally done all the steps you took but I installed safestrap and installed Goldeneye rom or Goldfinger great roms updated constantly and the best parts its completely stock no added anything no knox and you can choose to uninstall each app (bloatware) under the application manager im running Goldfinger right now and its based off of the samsung galaxy s5 and Goldeneye looks like the S4 it all just depends on what you like but with either one you cant go wrong as long as you follow the install instructions for safestrap users its very detailed

There was a similar situation for upgrading an i337 on MF3 rooted with saferoot and safestrapped 3.72. Basically following these steps helped get it to NJ4 without ODIN
You'll need:
1. I337UCUFNJ4_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM.zip thanks @muniz_ri
2. NJ4 Native Tether Addon I337UCUFNJ4_Safestrap_TetherAddOn.zip from here post number 8 thanks @rodin95
1. Download and copy these files to your external SD Card
2. Reboot S4 i337 to recovery after the SD Card with the two files copied to it inserted on to SD Slot of the phone
3. Once on SafeStrap recovery, tap Backup to backup your data/cache to external SD card (make sure that you backup to external storage by tapping on that Storage option)
4. Go back to Home button and do an advanced wipe of system, cache and data and DO NOT Wipe external SD Card
5. Go back to Home Menu, tap on Install, locate and select the file on external SD card tap on I337UCUFNJ4_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM.zip, swipe the button to confirm install DO NOT REBOOT once install is completed
6. Go back to Home Menu, tap Install again and locate and select the file on external SD card, I337UCUFNJ4_Safestrap_TetherAddOn.zip swipe the button to confirm install
7. Go back to Home Menu, tap Restore and choose the backup you made before from the external SD card
8. Reboot phone. It will take about 2 minutes for initial reboot with AT&T logo - be patient - now you have your phone on NJ4 retaining root and SafeStrap.
9. Optionally install the latest SafeStrap one more time and update SuperSU normally.
Hope it helps someone!

I was able to downgrade the phone to NB1 and root it with Towelroot, and used Safestrap in order to get recovery on the device.
After that, I booted into recovery and installed the GPE 5.0.1 ROM.: http://galaxys4root.com/t-mobile-galaxy-s4-roms/gpe-android-5-0-1-lollipop-rom-for-galaxy-s4/
Now the phone will not go past the S4 splash page, reboots and then goes into the stock recovery. Ive tried factory reset, clearing cache and removing the battery.
Any help is appreciated. I bought this phone for my fiance and am wanting to give it to her soon as a present.
Thank you so much in advance.
I think the problem is that you downgraded.

I couldnt install towelroot on the 4.4.4 version it came with since it said device wasnt supported.
I was following these instructions: http://www.droidviews.com/root-att-galaxy-s4-sgh-i337-android-4-4-4-kitkat-firmware-i337ucufnj4/
It states to downgrade, then root, then go back to the 4.4.4. I thought after the steps I took, I could go straight to a custom ROM.
Thanks
I used CF-Auto-Root to root my device. Since towelroot didn't work for me either.
Maybe the rom did not flash right. Try flashing again.

Before rooting your phone, you had to Odin the NC1 kernel. Did you Odin the NJ4 kernel after you rooted?
You may want to Odin it again, just to be safe.

You can grab it from here.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...to-root-i337ucufnj4-4-4-4-11-13-2014-t2939553

Hi-and thank you for responding.
Are you saying to re-root my phone? Because my phone is rooted. The information provided in the link, is the procedure I followed. I did have a problem when I first tried flashing the NC1, but I download the file again and it worked, other than that, everting is worked fine except for the Wi-Fi and Samsung Kies. I did read where it was posted, to re-flash the NC4 kernel again, which I didn’t try, didn’t make much sense seeing that it is rooted. I also have FX, Root Checker and SuperSU installed.
Should I try re-flashing the NJ4 again?
Or try rooting again? If so do I have to un-root my phone?
Thank you for your quick response.

The directions to root NJ4 are
1. Odin the NC1 kernel
2. Root with towelroot
3. Odin the NJ4 kernel.
My suggestion is to complete the root process by doing step 3. Once you do that, wifi will work again.
