hey all,
ive had my Hd2 for about 6 months and I'm thinking of getting rid of it for a N1 or a Desire. i mean is this a smart move?
my main reason is the lack if apps for the hd2 is pathetic and most are in the old skool windows mobile interface, which looks crap to the likes of the sense ui.
im also finding the slowdowns in win mo are driving me bonkers. for a high spec phone im not impressed.
course being that i have to lay down the best part of 400-600 pounds to get the forementioned phones id like the communities help. im tempted for a google N1 as the updates are more regular, but the sense UI on the hd2 i find really nice. so what would you guys say is the betterof the two? and would you get one over the hd2
thanks,
Luke
oh no... another one of those...
how the hell should we know?? vast majority of us in these parts of the forum have hd2, so isn't it better to ask those questions on android boards?
geez... how many threads like this do we need?
Im with mr. bronx on this one...
surely the HD2 community are the people to ask, as you've stayed with HD2, you'll be the most wise as to why not to get the android, and/or why you stayed with the HD2 over the new androids?

To be brutally honest, it is personal preference.
Every phone has it's issues.
Every operating system has it's issues.
Every owner has their issues with the above.
i have gone from the HD2 to the Desire and to honest for me anyway i find the desire and android a joy to use, dont get me wrong i still think the HD2 is a awesome phone but windows is a real pain sometimes.
im just hoping HTC gets us the android 2.2 update soon
android gets updates fast ,you will buy desire , and after one month android 2.2 is released ,and when upgrading officially to it ,android 3.0 will be released , android is not stable and very un mature os

you didnot understand me ,iam not talking about it ,iam talking about the version stability and the completness of features winmo
is updated nearly every two years and mainly skinning updates ,as it has alll features that a mobile could have but android gets update every 2-3 monthes , which adds new features to catch up other mature os
ahh got you now
but everyone seems really happy with 2.2 features and it has everything i had on the HD2.
like it was said above its just a personal preference thing.
Keep your HTC HD 2 android is on the way, either by dual boot, or being that of htc evo coming out, and actual rom.
The HTC HD 2 is the most powerfull device out there, and you can do whatever you want with it, no restrictions nothing, you can have a vast majority of operating systems.
Most can be ported thanks to the lovely people here at XDA.

An android port to the HD2 is not going to be like an android phone that came with android. It will be a long time before the port is as functional as an android phone. You're probably not going to want to use the android port full time as it will be a while before it uses all the hardware properly like bluetooth, wifi, camera, sound, etc. There could also be heating issues, battery issues, stabilty issues, etc. People seem to think that the evo rom will easily be ported over and it will be fully functional. It doesn't work like that. The touch pro's android port has been developed for over a year and it still isn't nearly as functional as a full android phone.
Don't get me wrong... I can't wait to be able to boot into android on my HD2, but I expect it to be over a year from now until it will be good enough to want to use full time instead of WinMo 6.5. HD2 is a WinMo phone, and thats the only os that it will run well for probably at least the next 6months to year. It may never run another os good enough to use full-time.
Do what your heat tells you. Just playing. Honestly, its all about what you need your phone to deliver for you.
My phone completes what I want and makes me happy. I sometimes feel the lack of apps but it is no big deal.
All I really use on a daily basis are Stocks, weather, music player, youtube app and web browser. You will obviously find more apps for android.
Personally, I dont need all those apps you find for android like optical illusions, weird sounds and bla bla bla. Sure I need an app like NBA Game Time similar to that of android but nothing that I desperately need.
I just hop on espn with skyfire or Opera 10 Mobile and Im good.
Android lacks quality games just like Windows Mobile but FPSEce helps a little my HD2.
My sisters own a Motorola Cliq and a Droid and nothing to major for me to want Android. Maybe If the developers from this site get a working android port I will be HAPPY.
Other than that, this phone fulfills my needs.
AGAIN, DO WHAT YOUR HEART SAYS.....LOL.
Don't allow others make your decision.
I bought my Misses an Iphone for christmas. The other day she was complaining it was running slow. I asked her when the last time she turned it off. " Turned it off" she said " i`ve never turned it off " just plugs it in at night to charge it up....Now thats a stable operating system.......

I've not rebooted my HD2 for at least 3 weeks, and I think that was due to a tweak in BsBtweaks needing a restart to take effect.
I can put you in touch with several people who have had iphones that lock up and become unresponsive more than once a week if you want?
Complexity will always have instability.
HD2 is much more sexy than ANY other phone on the market around imo..
Besides, they are working on Android for the HD2.. And making some good progress lately..
Nothing better than a phone that could eventually even dualboot .
If you want games and apps to play about with/be cool with around your mates, get an iPhone or another type that most 'mainstream' users have.
After months of installing custom ROMs to try and just make the Jurassic Park WM OS work like it should I've taken the plunge and ordered an HTC Desire.
It's been a wild ride, and I would especially like to thank Sir Sternas for his custom ROMs that made the phone work as best as it could.
There was huge potential there, but the Mickeysoft OS really let down this great phone.

bye....have fun and report back your thoughts !!!
Installed Android yesterday and it seems to be working fine, so I can choose. Yeehaaa!!!
gonna get my android soon too!
well done, you do that, having used android on the HD2 for a while now im sticking with WM, android offers nothing new except the app stores, HD2, running latest WM 6.5.3 with sence 2.5 flys like you wouldnt believe, zero problems, very stable very good bat life very fast and smooth i really dont know what it is your looking for but good luck in finding it, i suspect its just a case of the grass is greener.....and open source must be better.
and before anyone starts im assuming that android will be quicker, more stable and bug free, but even with those assumptions it brings nothing new.
I love windows mobile to death but its crazy to me how my T-mobile usa G1 never froze on me when I had it, never lagged how much windows mobile lagged and I never faced as much problems like windows mobile but at the end of the day still with windows mobile lol....but hd2 is my last windows mobile phone I will be back to android. Windows 7 looks like an cheap version of the iphone and I feel its a step down from windows 6.5.
P.S: Please don't bash me for my opinion
I flash probably once every three weeks and have dones so for 18 months or more, yet every ROM still feels work-in-progress (and I say that meaning no disrespect to some wonderful cooks). 6.5 is buggy, and sometimes Sense is as well. The keyboard error *still* rears it's head in newer ROMs.
It's ridiculous that I can bash out texts on a 10-year-old Nokia faster than I can on the HD2 - I nearly ordered a dumbphone for this reason today.
I love my HD2. but as we're not married yet I can still badmouth it!
I don't know why people can't positives in both OS's. I personally believe android is more versatile. But I can't seem to pry myself completely away from windows mobile. Cht is amazing and that's what's kept me with windows mobile for so long. Nrg makes awesome roms. So lets just understand that not everyone has the same needs.

BTW, did you check the latests about hd2? android in it? better take a look at it and be patient waiting!

I think the man who started the thread made the second best move, the best move would've been iPhone. The worst is sticking with winMO 6..

LMAO Now that is funny. Even the most high end android phones lag a bit. The g1 on the other hand lagged a lot, especially when you had large texts chains or a lot of apps installed. I own a g1, cliq, and nexus so I have plenty of experience with android.

Android doesn't provide all the hardware drivers. That's what the developers are working on now for the HD2. You can't just plop Android onto new hardware and think it'll just work. It's not as amazing as that.
Android and WM both have their pros and cons. (I have owned both for at least a year.)

iPhone 4 hasn't been released in Sweden yet. Otherwise, yes, I would have absolutely no business being here if i had the phone, I'm just waiting, I still own the HD2.
Hey guys, havn't been on this website for quite a while since the first T-Mobile MDA came out.
I've been a apple fan boy getting every iPhone coming out since those days.. (Done paying full retail price for them)
To make a long story short, all my iDevices got stolen, i guess it was a blessing from above because most of these HTC devices are pretty damn epic.
I've had my HD2 for about a week now, i put that "energy rom" on it with all that HSPL things, etc. But ANYTIME i come back to this website (which is like once every 3,4 hours) i see a brand new build which makes me feel like I'm not enjoying the best of my phone.
Are most of these new builds like "omg another person putting out a build when we have enough" or they really worth loosing all the data to flash over for.
Also, i've been reading the android section for this device, and decided to give it a shot by installing that darkstone's 2.2 version, its pretty good but the constant freezing is a turn-off. I know android isn't 100% working but I'd atleast like to have something that doesnt freeze after i send every text message.
Any suggestions?
Lastly, there are a few terms that have me wondering "wtf" are these people talking about.
"Cooking"
"Kitchen"
What?
Cooking is the process of making the custom rom, and of course it's "cooked" in a kitchen (software you need for making them in).
You should try bangsters android build. It's really very good. If you decide to get it just remember it takes about 10 minutes to create the data store. Here's a link to his build.
If you ask me this guys ahead of game when it comes to android builds.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768048
Cool, thanks for the advice, idk but something about this build makes me want to go with it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773790
Try it. Report back on how it holds up. All the sense ones I've tried have really had a problem with temporary SOD and fast battery drains. The version I linked for you doesn't really have that problem. Ill admit it freezes a few times but kicks in a couple seconds later on occasions.

Which one did you go with after all?
I got my S2 yesterday and so far, am very pleased with it. Before it, I had a ZTE Blade, which was my first smart phone.
With the blade, I was still on 2.1 when 2.3 came out, my network provider put a load of garbage on the phone that really slowed it down, not to mention taking up valueable space. Bascially, there was an endless list of problems that needed addressing. As a consequence, I started trying out custom ROMs almost as soon as I got the phone.
With the S2 however, I ditched the standard launcher, put on ADW EX, switched in a number of apps instead of the Samsung defaults, but I can't say I've found any significant bugs yet that make me thing I need to go custom.
Everything just works (let's hope it stays that way!), which is a world away from where I was with my old Blade.
With that in mind, why do you use a custom ROM? I think it can be split into two areas, bug fixes, and nice additions. From my reading so far:
Bug fixes:
Shutter lag on the camera?
Nice additions:
Bettery battery life through new kernals
ICS! (ok this is a big one, if Samsung is slow with their update and there's a custom ROM that works well, that will probably be enough to tempt me)
Notification lights (I don't understand why all phones don't have this by default, I fell in love with it on my old Nokia 6300 and the blinking red light is ever present on my work Blackberry)
Deeper theming - I do miss my circular battery indicator
I'm sure you guys will help me add to the list. The thing is, what is the cost? With my Blade, I craved a phone that was fast and reliable. I seem to have that now, and if the custom ROMs introduce their own bugs or decrease stability, I don't think it will be worth it for me.
Let me know your thoughts, I'm not trying to start a flame war. This community is a lot bigger with so many more projects and ROMs going on, I'm struggling to get a handle on it all. Hopefully this will help!
I wouldn't buy Android if it wasn't for customisation through roms...that's what makes Android special!

Just a few months ago I bought myself an iPod touch... I was thrilled with it! it was my first "real" mp3 player since my sony NW-HD5...
I Jailbreaked it... but it wasnt enough..
I waited to see how the iPhone 4S would come along.. and when it did I suddenly realized something..
People who buy Apple products are often ready to feel their products are outdated the next year...
Sure enough, Apple's hardware specs are "inferior" than most of the high end android devices.. but as we know their iOS is optimized to squeeze the most juice out of it.. until it gets unsupported...
So thats one of the main reasons I bought and Android phone, and customize it to its fullest... Today my hardware works.. OK.. but in the future, with better ROMS, more optimized to the specific hardware.. my device will be more alive than ever..
So basically... Apple devices just get worse with time... Instead.. Android can only get better.

most of the mods in your list can be achieved by jkay super awesome work. You dont need an entire rom for it. I can understand a kernel affecting battery life but how does a rom do it? (apart from swapping a few apks out?)

You can do all of the tweaks that you can think of without a custom ROM. But the beauty of using a ROM instead of doing it yourself is that you get a full package of what the developers could think of and all the feedback from the users. So its a base to proceed your modding from. You also don't have to deodex the ROM yourself for easier modding.
Regarding battery life, it comes from bloatware and excessive logging that has been removed. Often ROM makers will also replace some of the stock apps with more battery efficient ones. For instance swapping apps that through a bug keeps the phone awake.

yes they could have made it more customizable like sense but thats about it. All custom rom chefs do is customize the sammy rom more. look at the features
mms removed from logs - i am sure most of us dont want it but there are some who use it. Understand samsung is creating this to please everyone.
I can give more examples. Moral of the story is lets credit the super devs here but lets not take credit away from samsung. They have done a decent job with this phone in all departments.

Please don't flame me for asking this question, I've read a lot, but still have not found a definitive answer for this question.
Is there a fully functional android rom (preferably SD) gingerbread or ics, that has everything working ok with no bugs, just like an wm 6.5 rom?
I'm asking this because I'm pondering buying an used HD2 for some android goodness, and can't completely decide if it's the way to go. Since I would like everything to work smooth and stabile, for instance like my stupid iphone 3gs (please don't judge, got it as a gift years ago).
I thank you all for your replies in advance!

Does the digitizer brake easily on HD2?
Digitizers on HD2 are notorious for breaking! My original HD2 which I had for three years needs a replacement. I love HD2 so much I replaced it with another one running Ansar's WP 7.8 and Boxmax Android in NativeSD. WP 7.8 works wonderfully and is my daily use OS. No problems whatsoever. My Boxmax Android is old and I need updating to its latest build but I find I rarely use it so I always put off on doing that.
By the way, I don't know if anybody has asked u yet but how'd you come about with that handle "rape_artist"? Just curious....

For practical use, yes.
If you look deep enough, no.
Because the HD2 was originally a Windows device some new drivers are simply not available for it.
Having said that, the Typhoon Gingerbread ROM had *everything* working. If one does not need the latest JellyBean ROM it will work flawlessly. The only things that will not work are a few newer apps written for Android 4.x and up, such as Apex or Nova launchers.
The newer ICS and JB ROMs work well but again, you can find a few 720p videos which will not play right. Netflix also has issues and will not run.
If you figure out which exception you can live without the HD2 can be a good choice.
