Continuation of PA-GApps - General Paranoid Android Discussion

I am looking into and trying to see about continuing GApps from where TKruzze left off. I have everything download of the GApps and will post a thread as soon as I get them all uploaded. I am a young developer but I enjoy learning from mistakes made. I will have iluploaded Tkruzze's last packages then I will start updating them. Please vote for if I should continue this.
Edit: Thread for Kitkat has been started Here

Yes I Have those started updating. The one think I can't figure out in the package is updating the Google play services folder. If you look inside GMSCore, you see many folders. I can't figure it out there. Everything else I have.

Google Play Services, which is located in /system/priv-app/GmsCore.apk after install and the different folder are because of the different dpi like:
Version number has -X10 - universal armeabi CPU
Version number has -X12 - 160 DPI & armeabi CPU
Version number has -X14 - 240 DPI & armeabi CPU
Version number has -X30 - universal armeabi-v7a CPU
Version number has -X32 - 160 DPI & armeabi-v7a CPU
Version number has -X34 - 240 DPI & armeabi-v7a CPU
Version number has -X36 - 320 DPI & armeabi-v7a CPU
Version number has -X38 - 480 DPI & armeabi-v7a CPU
Version number has -X46 - 320 DPI & arm64-v8a CPU
Version number has -X70 - x86 CPU
or what do you want to know? If you want to add new apk you rename it to the original name of the zip maybe and replace it or I am wrong?

In the GMS folder in the pa GApps zip, there is like 5 folders.
Common
8
6
4
2
Each Google play services is a different size in them. I can't figure out which ones he used

the 2 folder is this Version number has -X32 - 160 DPI & armeabi-v7a CPU
the 4 folder is this Version number has -X34 - 240 DPI & armeabi-v7a CPU
the 6 folder is this Version number has -X36 - 320 DPI & armeabi-v7a CPU
the 8 folder is this version number has -X38 - 480 DPI & armeabi-v7a CPU
common I am not sure. Or is my thinking wrong? Or maybe another guy here can help because I dont have read all writings from the old post the different size is because every DPI have got another apk .

Common folder is the lib folder for play services. And that most likely is what the numbers are because they are the same for the Google play games.

Yes, English is too simple. But that's what I write - not everyone can be a developer and you can not just take and throw users. Personally, I try to maintain my product as I can, if someone else uses it.

Newsflash. Developing **** for xda users is not our paying job. We don't owe users anything.
Tkruzze held on and maintained gapps for over 2 years....I say that's pretty good. We get burned out on projects, especially when users feel they are entitled to a lifetime of updates and support all for free.
We don't 'take and throw users' whatever the F that means.
We develop and maintain something. If people use that something, cool. When the time comes to move on, we move on. Unless you pay for a service, you aren't obligated to get ****. That kind of thinking, (that developers owe you anything) is what's wrong with the android community as a whole. That thought process is what's driving developers away and making us say '**** it, I'm only going to make this thing for myself to use if people can't be grateful for what I give them from my spare time'
If you honestly think that developers on xda owe you something, you are in for a rude awakening in the real world. Until you pay my bills, I will develop what I want, when I want, and support it in any fashion I see fit for my situation.

I think users didn't appreciated what was done for them. I can say only one big thanks. Good work guys, hope you are doing well.
And for users who thought they are responsible for anything you know nothing about hard work they did to bring you pretty good GAPPS.

Overclock OMAP based PPC on cpu load?

Hello developers out there...
I have an idea in my mind:
* we can monitor an omap-cpu and
* we can overclock it with omapclock
What about using the cpu-load value to configure omapclock as needed?
For example:
My device is an MDA Compact II (Charmer)
Standard CPU-speed is 195 MHz
Most times my CPU runs nearly idle.
Why dont reduce the cpu speed to 100 MHz (e.g.) if cpu load is < 20% to safe battery?
On the other side i use a gps-system which uses much cpu load - I have to overclock here.
If cpu-load reaches more than 70% my processor should be overclocked... currently I use 245 MHz
We would need a script monitoring cpu load regularly and starting omapclock if needed. As I'm not a programmer - is this possible and is there someone out who would write this? If so - I'm interessted in beta-testing...
Is someone else interessted in such an application?
Is there a solution out there which is able to do so? (I googled around but I cannot find...)
Thanks in advance for any comment - and excuse my bad english...
Greetings from Austria
This is a really excellent idea. If there is no other (more competent) programmer out there then I will give it a try - I've never made a WM5 program from scratch before, only modified one!
xcpuscalar works that way
The idea isn't as wonderful as it sounds due to the structure of the OS.
At first it sounds like the automatic gearing in a car however it isn't as simple in a multitasking OS. IMO the kernel scheduler of WM5 still has a long way to go in terms of responsivness to current active application.

If I understand you right - in easier words - if we switch the speed to often we slow down the response for other programs?
What about defining a configurable time to wait before the device is allowed switching again - e.g. 10 seconds?
being that every single chip have a different level they can overclock without turning toast
and devices can have more or less dirt and dust in them
or be in different temp envioments and air humidity
this program could be a costly thing to use to gain an unsurden amount of batt and speed inc
batt and speed usage is not linear depending on overclock
there are piles of wait states and such which could mean that
overclock dont help much
there could be power usage for regulating clock which mean that
changing it often use more power then normal operation
Thanks for your comments.
I think this application could be useful if it is configureable enough.
How can the cpu load be queried on a PPC?
I cannot find something helpful on MSDN.
The program would need the following specifications:
Does not slow down the PPC with constant CPU polling
Only overclocks when the CPU is under high demand for a significant amount of time
Is configurable to only under/overclock to levels prescribed by the user
This can be achieved quite easily:
Program runs in the background and checks CPU usage every x seconds, where x is chosen by the user and is in the order of seconds, say 2-5 seconds
The PPC will only be overclocked if the CPU usage is above y% usage for z * x seconds, where z is an integer of somewhere between 2 and 3
Similarly, there will be a threshold of usage below which the PPC is underclocked
Rudegar, those issues you mentioned should hopefully not be a problem.
The under/overclocking can be configurable as mentioned above so that each user can experiment with OmapClock and determine which are the best speeds for their processor to run.
Also, you could simply use it to underclock and save battery when the processor is not in use.
If checking the CPU usage is not too processor intensive then the program will not slow down others.
You perfectly described what the application should do.
Thanks Oliy.
Let's proof our concept. I can help with alpha-tests.
I also can do some performance/and battery tests with some tools around in this forum.
I even can write a documentation in German (i could write it in English too but I dont think this is a really good idea...)
Lets go?
I would like to write a tool for out omap, but i can't find any specs on omap cpu !
If anyone can give me some specs i can develop this without problems !

Maybe this?
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wcemain4/html/cerefGetIdleTime.asp
I forgot to mention: this describes how to measure idle time. For cpu-scaling we should call omapclock as it works perfectly.

I agree, no point reinventing the wheel.
I have checked out ways of getting the CPU load. Unfortunately the PerformanceCounter class is not available in the Compact .NET framework so it will have to be done on system idle time as mentioned earlier.
If we are calling an external program to do the under/overclocking then we can easily extend this program to support all CPUs.
I will have a go at making a program capable of determining CPU load tomorrow?
laggflor... I don't speak German! What device do you have? I have a Wizard.

These are good news. Good Luck...
Thanks.
If I write the program then I'll have a go at documentation too, it should be very simple really, just 4 inputs required from the user regarding the load polling frequency, the boundaries at which to overclock and underclock, and the threshold of these boundaries.
Also, an external function to be called for under/overclock.
I'll have a go at this in a few hours - right now, I'm off in the sun to celebrate England beating Paraguay!

I've made a program which seems to monitor CPU load fairly well.
Now, I have to make it decide when to under/overclock, then I will add support for running an external program (OmapClock) to set a new clockspeed.
Finally, I will add a user interface (or maybe not - might just keep it as an xml file).

These are quit good news. i was off some days - and in the meantime you are discussing such crucial things. Your spec in the posting above is excellent and the idea from you - laggflor - is really cool.
Let me do some more suggestions:
1. Make it configurable to have a user defined clock speed at starting the program. This is because i often switch on the device and want to check meetings or something like this. This lasts quite short and i want to have maximum speed for this short time due to some program start. After an also configurable amount of time the hysteresis starts.
2. If i switch from a very high clock speed to very low (264 -> 132) the device hangs up sometimes. Maybe you can decrease clock speed in more steps.
3. Maybe it is possible to have several cpu load regions all configured with a different clock speed. But propably it is better to do it in a second step.
By the way: Greetings for beating Paraguay. I hope that england make the group as winner - otherwise you will have germany in the next round. This is not good for you We will not loose again like at euro championship 2000)
Hi,
In answer to your suggestions:
1. The user can define the clockspeeds required for Underclocked, Default Clock, and Overclocked. It will always start at "Default" and so you can set this to whatever you want.
2. The program has 3 states - overclocked, default clock, and underclock.
It will enter either of these 3 states depending on the load, but it will never go straight from overclocked to underclocked or vice versa, always:
Underclocked -> Default clock -> Overclocked
And of course the reverse. Hopefully this will mean that the steps are small enough that it will cause no problems. I have used 150Mhz -> 200MHz -> 240MHz and it is fine.
I've got the program running on my device and it appears to work fine. I'm just working on the user interface now so that it is easy to set the parameters of the program. I will post a version soon, perhaps tomorrow.
Oliy
how did you implement CPU load monitor ? I checked a way trought MSDN and google but i don't found nothing using .NET, i was curious about it... i just found on MSDN a small sample called "Performance Counter" that give me some tips using :
QueryPerformanceFrequency
QueryPerformanceCounter
and count ms between two ticks

[Game] Vexed ! (updated:20/06/2008)

Hi forum,
it has been about one year that I follow threads on xda-developers and I thank to all of you So, I decided to share something that I've done.
If you owned a PalmOS device in the past, sure you know this old blocks game that has roots in Puzznic. I’m a big fun of Vexed since the 1st PalmOS version. In 2002, I really missed this game when I bought my 1st pocket pc and decided to write it for that platform. Since then, I have a never ending Vexed project for Windows platforms that lives almost only on my pocketpc and my laptop. The game was only distributed to a couple of friends during these years since I was not able to convince myself on its quality to release it. A couple of months ago I’ve finally decided to seriously finish and package it as a freeware as the PalmOS version. But it's still hard to finish
So, what I expect by publishing it here for the 1st time is your support and feedback
The level packs and graphics are taken from sourceforge project of Vexed here: http://vexed.sourceforge.net/
The source code is entirely written by myself. This is an early beta version. Feel free to send feedback to fix things. Check options if block animations are not smooth for your device.

palmhook

Build 385 with WM5/6 VGA and PocketPC 2003 support:
Hi guys, thank you all for your interest !
- I prepared a quickn'dirty patch to make it run in VGA. The new build 385 should run double sized (as qvga emulation in VGA PPC2003).
- I just added a PocketPC 2003 version, enjoy it !
Build 423 with WM5/6 and PocketPC 2003 multi-resolution (QVGA/VGA/square) and mui support: I'm pleased to announce the new version with lots of improvements
- Almost all WM resolutions supported: QVGA/VGA portrait/landscape/square resolutions are now supported (except Options dialog which only display correctly in portrait mode)
- Multi language support: I added initially English and some limited translation to French and Turkish languages (help file is still in English), If you want Vexed in your own language, you can translate a plain rc text file and I'll be happy to compile and add resource dll to the next release
- Many bugs fixed
2008-06-19 mui problem reported by gundalbert is fixed, better screen layout on square and landscape resolutions, minor improvement for selection dot positioning
2008-06-18 Window layout bugs introduced with multi-resolution have been fixed
2008-06-17 Fixed level pack dialog bugs (level pack info does not display) reported by kandjar
2008-06-16 Fixed a small bug where next button on toolbar allows user to continue beyond the last solved level by quickly tapping on this button before it gets disabled. Now, game engine checks game options and do not allow going beyond when all levels is not checked.
2008-06-07 Fixed the "replayed level with a better score does not update total score" bug reported by mab1712. Fixed the "level pack change is not updated in the ini file" bug reported by multiple users: Rescue9, RaymondB
2008-06-01 Fixed a nasty old bug that blocks the game at the end of a level pack. Now it displays properly a message box then asks for a new level pack (was reported by multiple users: kinderenh, lover, mab1712, jem777)

- External blocksets: I added some sort of block skinning. There's a new 'Blocks' folder under Vexed install directory where I put external png images for blocksets. Some bitmap resolutions do not resize well in my experiments. Vexed will scan this folder to let you pick another one in options dialog. That means that, if you do not like the game resolution or brick colors, you may change it
- Smartphone version is still pending, I focused my effort on PPC stability, if there's an interest I may work on it.
Upgrading from a previous version: You must remove the old Vexed.ini file which is not compatible with build 423 (details are here)
French version in 240x240 resolution
Great!
I also missed this game from earlier Palm dates. I tried Next and was not really impressed with it.
Thanks for this release. I am sure others will love this games and am looking forward for your next update.

Hi,
Used to enjoy this very much on my Palm.
Any thoughts to making this available for us VGA users?
Would like to have this again.
I've gotta second what's here: THANKS!!!!!
I've missed the game from my dad's Zire. Now my 6800 can have it too.
So much for productivity, now that I've got so many games.
Used to play this a lot on my Palm. Can you make a version compatible with WM2003?
Thanks for the game

[DEV] DiamondDownloadManager 0.03 now available!

After doing my ActionScreen, I realised I could adapt the framework very easily to create a download manager.
Currently, the only applications on it are ones that I've hardcoded, although I'm almost certainly going to extend it to 3rd party software, and probably build in some form of updates system...
I will also be implementing this as an "add ons" system to a ROM I'm working on. E.g. it's a very light ROM with a long list of cabs that can be downloaded and installed from one place.
Why am I posting it here you may ask... Well, I want to get some ideas for what to do, and see what people think of it before I release it.

What I'm hoping to do:
Application categories
Sorting by developer
Submissions (two levels, trusted - have been checked, and untrusted - haven't been checked but have warnings plastered all over them)
Details screen with a screenshot and some text
Proper updates mechanism
Kinetic list scrolling (I just can't be asked to derive displacement from velocity at the moment...)
Warning, this may destroy your device, and possibly the planet, but I cannot be held responsible!
Cab attached below, backup anything you care about, copy it across install and run...
0.04 is identical (bar the fact that it thinks its 0.04 instead of 0.03...), but is hosted somewhere else to demonstrate the current update mechanism.
Reserved for me
Looks good so far!
I would initially focus on included barebone (trusted) apps in the download manager (with auto-update notification functionality) and eventually branch it out to 3rd party apps...
This notion in general is the one (and only) thing that the iphone has over all other devices currently
great idea

Currently, there are nine applications I've built from the Diamond 2.03 ROM (the Blackstone Manila is from mun_rus), and no form of update function has been implemented.
All the icons and images are the ones the Diamond Comm Manager uses, so changing them changes the skin in this.
Anyone have any ideas for what kind of data base I should use? So far, everything is hardcoded!
looks very nice and clean, as a past nokia user i used to use nokias download manager, maybe you could have folders on the opening/main screen and have dif things also like games, themes, wallpapers etc but keep the folders etc in with the style of manila like uv done so far, very good work, keep it up.

Nice work mate.
Glad to see MS havn't put you off with their Sky*** stuff
How about colaborating with CRC and his Device Update stuff? He has a killer back end that use Geo Balanced FTP Servers. The client just makes HTTP requests and the server returns XML.
Me and Chainfire were working on it with him, but Chainfire got busy and we were waiting for a "grand design" from him.
Just a suggestion...

In what ways is it better or worse than this? It would be nice to get some feedback on it in comparison to this...

There are a few things I need to work on in my frontend (categories, sorting the list, kinetic scrolling etc), and then I need to find a fast, lightweight database system before I can consider having a decent database.
I have tried to contact CRCinAU (DeviceUpdate) and there's some discussion about the Gecko database, which may be potential backends. The thing I don't want to end up with is a completely seperate system. I think to be able to distribute apps in a decent, managed way, all the frontends need to work with a single unified backend, so developers can submit their application once, and only once.

12. Using the work of others.
If you are developing something that is based on the work of another Member, you MUST first seek their permission, and you must give credit to the member whose work you used. If a dispute occurs about who developed / created a piece of work, first try to settle the matter by private message and NOT in open forum. If this fails then you may contact a moderator with clear evidence that the work was created by you.
Convincing evidence will result in copied work being removed. If there is no clear evidence you created the work then in the spirit of sharing all work will remain posted on the forums.
As an addition, developers have the right to hold exclusivity over their work for as long as it is deemed necessary by the dev or freely share it. However, if the work is claimed as exclusive, it must remain as such. No selective sharing will be allowed (ie allowing certain people to use it and not others). Should the dev decide to start sharing the work with others, the work automatically becomes fair game for all to use.
In regards to permissions, same rules remain for this but if permission was already given, unless there is a very valid reason, it cannot be revoked (same applies to major updates on the work). Under that same premise, permissions cannot be denied unless the work is exclusive or under severe circumstances.
In plain English: If you want to keep your work exclusive, go for it. However, if you are going to share your work, do it fairly.
These rules apply to all software posted on XDA (including but not limited to ROMs, RUUs, apps, games, kernels, themes, icons, etc) unless that software comes with a license that waives these rules.

dude, never thought I receive a "thank" of you.
always entered at XDA but never commented, just saw what was happening, and said, our this adfree knows everything. not only you, hero 355 also. Thank you.
in my wave, it was 5380B, only worked in Brazil. Brazil and the store does not have all applications (mostly games) I saw at kies in other stores, but mine was 5380B was not recognized by other stores. I started using the tk and began to understand the functioning of the samsung apps. I went and found the konaconfig. that was when I analyzed all lines until I saw the line KonaC22 = 724. and said already heard of 724, remembered that it was setting YES, oh I changed that line to another country. I entered the samsung apps, and asked me to accept the term (of Brazil yet) but then after much trying, I removed the SIM and tried again. and it worked, I could download apps from other countries by this method. but I saw that this method was boring because not everyone has wifi. I went and got in his XDA and saw thread, and found a way to change the C10. oh everything improved. fast and better. but I wanted more, I saw it in the store by kies china has many applications (only in China) have created an ID and could not change my ID since appeared (error processing) after much trying, I managed to login. and saw that the email was in C50 and C51 password.
still has the story of how I saved the applications folder without encrypting the info. has also started to edit the lockscreen. how to change user agent. and many other things.
sorry my bad english.

[Q] Kiwix (Offline Wiki Reader)?

It's in the Play Store now: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kiwix.kiwixmobile
but not compatible with the NST (requires Android 3.0 and up)
Is it worth uploading the apk here for folks to test with? Or is this simply a matter of hurry up and wait?
This is what I just sent to [email protected] :
I was ecstatic to see Kiwix in the Google Play store today. However, it showed as not compatible with my rooted Nook Simple Touch (NST). I was able to borrow a friend's Asus Transformer to install Kiwix to, then pulled the .apk from it and transfered it to the NST via a microSD card. Unfortunately, I got a "Parse Error: There is a problem installing the package" immediately upon attempting to install.
The NST runs Android 2.1, with an 800 x 600 display.
I am willing to beta-test any fixes for the NST. You will also find a vibrant user & development forum @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1198
Thank you so much for making Kiwix available on Android. I believe this could be THE killer-app for the NST hardware!

I too got "Parse Error" while trying to install on a Gingerbread mobile (so that I can convert my old mobile into a offline wikireader).
Have you find any solution for this, if so please let me know. Thanks.
The dev replied, politely informed me not to expect a solution. However, in the meantime I found Aard Dictionary. It works wonderfully on the NST, and has much more recently updated Wikipedia libraries than Kiwix. Be prepared for a long wait to download the libraries, though, even on broadband.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion. I also found Aard interesting and have been using it as a dictionary on my Nook first edition e-book reader. But I missed its ability to work as an offline wikireader.
Currently I had downloaded the zim files of Kiwix (18GB), currently I will stick to it as I am near to my download quota for this month. Later (may be next month) I will download the aard dictionary files.
Btw I had successfullly installed jellybean on my old mobile (though some features like camera are not working) and installed Kiwix and using it.
For what it's worth, an aarddict dev stated a few months ago that he was considering a move to the .zim format (see this ) . I could only suggest contacting the dev for a status update. Perhaps he might have a beta you could test?
By the way, I am curious to know what .zim language/dataset is 18GB?

Thanks for the info, I will contact the aard developer.
Regarding the size of .zim in Kiwix, there are two types of wikipedia datasets
1. Non Indexed zim (10-11 GB)
2. Indexed zim (18-19GB)
In terms of content wise both are same (updated in 2012), but the advantage with Indexed zim is that it allows to search even in the content where as with Non indexed zim, it only allows you to search in the titles of articles (so size is less).
One advantage with Kiwix is it allows you to create indexing for non Indexed zim on your local machine, so you can save a lot of bandwidth.
What I found with the simple wiki (around 130 MB) file in Aard is that it also works similar to Non indexed zim (only searching in the titles). Please correct me if I am wrong ?
Aard allows to search inside each article in the newer versions. There is a dedicated search button when an article is opened.
I am trying kiwix right now and it seems to work pefectly. I will post if i encounter any problems.

I love Aard, and today downloaded v 1.6.6.1 to my NST. I do not see a dedicated search button or any way of searching inside each article, nor is there a Settings or Options button.
Searching would be wonderful in Wikipedia and Wiktionary. Have I missed something?

Might be, that this option is only avaible in android 4 and higher. The search button is accessed through the menu icon introduced with android 4.
