It's in the Play Store now: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kiwix.kiwixmobile
but not compatible with the NST (requires Android 3.0 and up)
Is it worth uploading the apk here for folks to test with? Or is this simply a matter of hurry up and wait?
This is what I just sent to [email protected] :
I was ecstatic to see Kiwix in the Google Play store today. However, it showed as not compatible with my rooted Nook Simple Touch (NST). I was able to borrow a friend's Asus Transformer to install Kiwix to, then pulled the .apk from it and transfered it to the NST via a microSD card. Unfortunately, I got a "Parse Error: There is a problem installing the package" immediately upon attempting to install.
The NST runs Android 2.1, with an 800 x 600 display.
I am willing to beta-test any fixes for the NST. You will also find a vibrant user & development forum @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1198
Thank you so much for making Kiwix available on Android. I believe this could be THE killer-app for the NST hardware!

I too got "Parse Error" while trying to install on a Gingerbread mobile (so that I can convert my old mobile into a offline wikireader).
Have you find any solution for this, if so please let me know. Thanks.
The dev replied, politely informed me not to expect a solution. However, in the meantime I found Aard Dictionary. It works wonderfully on the NST, and has much more recently updated Wikipedia libraries than Kiwix. Be prepared for a long wait to download the libraries, though, even on broadband.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion. I also found Aard interesting and have been using it as a dictionary on my Nook first edition e-book reader. But I missed its ability to work as an offline wikireader.
Currently I had downloaded the zim files of Kiwix (18GB), currently I will stick to it as I am near to my download quota for this month. Later (may be next month) I will download the aard dictionary files.
Btw I had successfullly installed jellybean on my old mobile (though some features like camera are not working) and installed Kiwix and using it.
For what it's worth, an aarddict dev stated a few months ago that he was considering a move to the .zim format (see this ) . I could only suggest contacting the dev for a status update. Perhaps he might have a beta you could test?
By the way, I am curious to know what .zim language/dataset is 18GB?

Thanks for the info, I will contact the aard developer.
Regarding the size of .zim in Kiwix, there are two types of wikipedia datasets
1. Non Indexed zim (10-11 GB)
2. Indexed zim (18-19GB)
In terms of content wise both are same (updated in 2012), but the advantage with Indexed zim is that it allows to search even in the content where as with Non indexed zim, it only allows you to search in the titles of articles (so size is less).
One advantage with Kiwix is it allows you to create indexing for non Indexed zim on your local machine, so you can save a lot of bandwidth.
What I found with the simple wiki (around 130 MB) file in Aard is that it also works similar to Non indexed zim (only searching in the titles). Please correct me if I am wrong ?
Aard allows to search inside each article in the newer versions. There is a dedicated search button when an article is opened.
I am trying kiwix right now and it seems to work pefectly. I will post if i encounter any problems.

I love Aard, and today downloaded v 1.6.6.1 to my NST. I do not see a dedicated search button or any way of searching inside each article, nor is there a Settings or Options button.
Searching would be wonderful in Wikipedia and Wiktionary. Have I missed something?

Might be, that this option is only avaible in android 4 and higher. The search button is accessed through the menu icon introduced with android 4.

Very nice game... works very nice on a QVGA screen in normal mode. When you switch to landscape... doesn't look very good. Also, it would be nice to be able to input letters with my Tilt keyboard while in landscape mode. Other than that, I think the game is great. Good work.

Thank you for sharing your hard work
After doing my ActionScreen, I realised I could adapt the framework very easily to create a download manager.
Currently, the only applications on it are ones that I've hardcoded, although I'm almost certainly going to extend it to 3rd party software, and probably build in some form of updates system...
I will also be implementing this as an "add ons" system to a ROM I'm working on. E.g. it's a very light ROM with a long list of cabs that can be downloaded and installed from one place.
Why am I posting it here you may ask... Well, I want to get some ideas for what to do, and see what people think of it before I release it.

What I'm hoping to do:
Application categories
Sorting by developer
Submissions (two levels, trusted - have been checked, and untrusted - haven't been checked but have warnings plastered all over them)
Details screen with a screenshot and some text
Proper updates mechanism
Kinetic list scrolling (I just can't be asked to derive displacement from velocity at the moment...)
Warning, this may destroy your device, and possibly the planet, but I cannot be held responsible!
Cab attached below, backup anything you care about, copy it across install and run...
0.04 is identical (bar the fact that it thinks its 0.04 instead of 0.03...), but is hosted somewhere else to demonstrate the current update mechanism.
Reserved for me
Looks good so far!
I would initially focus on included barebone (trusted) apps in the download manager (with auto-update notification functionality) and eventually branch it out to 3rd party apps...
This notion in general is the one (and only) thing that the iphone has over all other devices currently
great idea

Currently, there are nine applications I've built from the Diamond 2.03 ROM (the Blackstone Manila is from mun_rus), and no form of update function has been implemented.
All the icons and images are the ones the Diamond Comm Manager uses, so changing them changes the skin in this.
Anyone have any ideas for what kind of data base I should use? So far, everything is hardcoded!
looks very nice and clean, as a past nokia user i used to use nokias download manager, maybe you could have folders on the opening/main screen and have dif things also like games, themes, wallpapers etc but keep the folders etc in with the style of manila like uv done so far, very good work, keep it up.

Nice work mate.
Glad to see MS havn't put you off with their Sky*** stuff
How about colaborating with CRC and his Device Update stuff? He has a killer back end that use Geo Balanced FTP Servers. The client just makes HTTP requests and the server returns XML.
Me and Chainfire were working on it with him, but Chainfire got busy and we were waiting for a "grand design" from him.
Just a suggestion...

There are a few things I need to work on in my frontend (categories, sorting the list, kinetic scrolling etc), and then I need to find a fast, lightweight database system before I can consider having a decent database.
I have tried to contact CRCinAU (DeviceUpdate) and there's some discussion about the Gecko database, which may be potential backends. The thing I don't want to end up with is a completely seperate system. I think to be able to distribute apps in a decent, managed way, all the frontends need to work with a single unified backend, so developers can submit their application once, and only once.

HARDWARE COMPASS IN ALL HTC DEVICES WITH THE AK8976A CHIP?!?!
As said by some (tuxhero for example => here) ,the Touch HD has a real hardware compass inside waiting to be activated by some clever dev.
If you are such a dev here is some bounty for you as a little encuragement.
Goal:
Build a little proof of concept application (for winmo) and open the sources for all xda devs.
As for the bounty:
050$ Draque:the_Plaque
050$ maati + additionl 100$ if it works in google maps. (But only if released before the HTC Leo
050$ tids2k
050$ LC40

It's nice but i am not sure. Please don't go on my words. Some one said that me and i said it to you. No real Proofs.

it might be worthwhile to extract the compass application from the omnia2 rom dump for testing purposes
Is this screen from the omnia2 or pro?
And is this a test app from microsoft?
It doesn't work on my HTC Touch HD.
Hi, there is a test app that comes with the HTC Debug Tools set for this compass, some time ago I analyzed it and determined that it was likely present in the hardware, but I have never gotten it to function on my Raphael.
Lacking an HD device to test with, I can't say if it works there, but I can provide the app I will attach it shortly.

Da_G, i just tried on my HD the soft you shared to us;
-open and close seem to be ok but nothing happens
if you choose to re-open without closing before it will give this logical error:board already connected.

You have to copy the DDLs to Windows folder. However, "init" or "start" from the menu only brings up an error message "The board is not connected". Some graphical glitches as well ... seems to be made for QVGA.
So with a small possibility that Layar (3.0 ?) will come to Windows Mobile based phones, we really need a working compass for that to work.
Anyone still working on this? Would be a great addition for all our HTC devices!
Ps. For those who don't know Layar yet; it's an Augmented Reality app for Android and soon iPhone 3.0. Go visit http://layar.eu/ and think of trading WM for Android .

Same happens on a Rhodium, would be very nice to have it working.
It needs a device called ECS1:, this driver is not present on Touch HD.
Maybe first we should check if any of new WM devices actually have AKM chip inside?
Does Windows Mobile provide any kind of a compass API? How difficult would it be to write a program like Layar or Wikitude or build compass support into Google Maps?
I'm thinking about buying an Omnia II or waiting for the HTC Leo, both should probably have the compass hardware, but how about any apps that use the compass? How long do you think it will take until we see an augmented reality apps for Windows Mobile?
Does anyone know which compass is used in the htc polaris?
Ar are the cab files for the polaris hw compass available by chance?
btw: if anyone wants to raise the bounty for this project just pm me or write it directly into the thread.

Awesome! Thanks Da_G. Keep us posted.
Hi all,
BSODroid is my first Android application. It is a proof of concept implementation of a flaw in Windows Vista, which is so far unpatched (although Microsoft are due to start distributing the patch any moment now), that allows a user to send a Blue Screen of Death to that computer over the network.
To test your home, office or clients' machines, or even just to have some fun with your friends, all you need to do is connect to their network via WiFi, enter in their hostname (either IP or actual hostname will work), and press Execute!
Note: the target Vista machine must have network file / printer sharing turned on (though most people have it turned on these days)
This is a fun little application I created yesterday and have been having playing with my friends' computers on their home network and showing them the Windows flaw.
Video of it in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIy_d94tDmQ
As I said, it will be patched soon, so anyone who has Windows Updates enabled will be immune to it within the next 72 hours or so.
BSODroid can be downloaded from the Android Market (just search for BSODroid!) or alternatively you can download the APK directly from my website: http://www.dereenigne.com/

Yeah, seems as though it works on some builds of Win 7, but not others.
It works on Win Server 2008 too.
I hope people are having their fun with it now, because Microsoft already have a patch in the works - I'm not sure if it's being pushed through Windows Updates yet, but if not then it will be quite soon!
Though, it will still always work on machines that don't run Windows Updates

It's being installed by the user, so it's not a virus at all. I personally think this is a neat little proof of concept program, and would love to have a copy for my WinMo device. Besides, if these proof of concept exploits weren't created, the software companies wouldn't have a reason to patch/fix their software until somebody with more malicious intents came along and used it. Hope there's a port to WinMo soon.

even so, if you can do it from an android phone it's not a virus? somehow I don't understand that.

Could be fun to make a "one stop shop" for stuff like this.
There's the unpatched IIS flaw as well which is easy as hell to abuse.
Select exploit (or select all), select target ip (+port/username etc for stuff like an IIS exploit), execute (on an iis exploit that'd use default port, anonymous/anonymous).
Is there any interest in this? Think it could be rather interesting to code

ok, let us know when you manage to get these working, almost done downloading it!
EDIT: I'll try and see if i can get them to work and if i do, i'll let you know
So, things that currently don't work are wi-fi, bluetooth, orientation sensor, hadware graphics and audio... a part from those issues I'm impressed on how well debian runs on the archos 70

Holy shaky cam! Were you nervous while recording?
Anyway, looks like you are making great progress. I know a number of people who would LOVE a full working Linux OS on this thing. Me being one of them!

Looks awesome.
Debian or Ubuntu on A70 it
Hello,
Really nice work, i hope you get the WIFI 100% and sound so it will be perfect for me !
As someone told you on your website, the coming Ubuntu release named "Natty Narwhal 11.04" will get the UNITY and GNOME interface, and it will be easy to switch from one to another, UNITY is also what looks like the Ubuntu Netbook Edition screen.
Maybe you can try to get UNITY inside Debian ? you will find more here :
//help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuNetbookEdition
Ex :With Ubuntu 10.10 a new desktop called "Unity" was introduced as default for the Ubuntu netbook edition. The new interface should use the small desktop of netbooks more effectively, give a better structured access to the installed application and be more touchscreen-friendly. It is already planned to use Unity as default desktop for Ubuntu 11.04
I am really exited for this. I have always wanted to use Linux as my main OS, but because of certain things I need (i.e. World of Warcraft ) that don't work well on Ubuntu, I always end up uninstalling and going back to Windows.
So I would love to have a nice Ubuntu/Android dual boot system on my A70. Keep up the good work.
And guys, don't forget to thank the OP. It's great when people do things like this to give us non-dev types better products.
Squeeze on A43it \o/
I did it using the same method.
And my 43it successfully booted Debian Squeeze.

The main problem is screen calibration. The pointer remains about 5 mm away from the screen borders, which make the menu totally unusable.
But as the center of the screen is usable, I managed to launch some applications.
