[Q] A question about WiFi and 3G - Galaxy Grand 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I want to present a scenario in which 3G data and wifi both are turned on at the same time. Android gives priority to wifi connection and uses it. In wifi "advanced settings":
1. Network notification is TURNED OFF
2. Keep Wifi on during sleep is set to ALWAYS.
Now suppose the Wifi signal is no more available maybe because of a power failure at the Router's end, Android switches over to "Data" connection. In this case, will the android continously search for the lost wifi signal and hence consumes a significant amount of battery power?
Thanks in advance

3G taking over in standby??

Something strange since my upgrade to 1.66 - when the phone's in standby it appears to be establishing an active 3G connection, and when i wake (unlock) the phone, you can watch as it reconnects to the current wifi connection again. Is this some sort of energy saving strategy, which could theoretically run your 3G bill up? (dont matter to me as mine is unlimited, but not all are).
Anyone else notice/know about this?
By default, Wifi is disabled during standby to save power. So if a program requests an internet connection, for example outlook if you configured it to check mail automatically, the phone will connect the data connection.
You can search for "wifinostandby" to find a fix that disables auto wifi power off.
But beware that current consumption with wifi on is substantially higher than when it's off, by 10 times (current draw is about 50mA vs 5 for "true" standby), meaning you get at best 30h standby life if doing nothing else.
Also, dont forget that the top bar shows you the connetion being offered by your network, it doesn't necessarily mean it's doing anything. If you disable the wifif you see the same 3g icon regardless of what data is doing. So as said above, you go to standby, wifi is disabled so the wifi icon vanishes, then if you have your phone in 3g mode (personally mine stays in gsm mode, so i see an E not a H) when you wake it up it will display the H before the wifi kicks in and the icon changes back to wifi again.

Connect to WiFi network timeout?

Hello. I'm sure that this must have been discussed but I cannot find the answer using search. As is surely normal, I use WiFi within the home and GPRS when there is no WiFi available. If WiFi is connected and I go out for a short while, then when I get back in a WiFi area, the WiFi is still connected. However, if I go away for a long time, and GPRS is used for perhaps a regular weather update, then the WiFi disconnects and has to be manually reconnected upon return to home. This leads to GPRS being used in a WiFi area unnecessarily if you forget to re-connect WiFi. Is there a WiFi connection timeout value or any other setting that can be changed? My old TyTN II did not have this problem. Thanks.
Try this CAB
It disable disconnecting WiFi when phone is in sleep mode and with this phone automaticly connects to WiFi when Leo will be in range.
Thanks Franq_23_pl. I think that the CAB just stops WiFi disconnecting when the device is in sleep mode. That will just drain the battery, surely? My old TyTN used to disable WiFi when in sleep mode, but as soon as you switched it on again, WiFi would be enabled and it would connect if in range. The problem with my HD2/Leo is that if I am away from my WiFi for some considerable time (ie, most of the day), then when I get back home and switch the device on, WiFi is disabled, and I have to manually toggle in on. So my question is..... What are the circumstances that cause WiFi to disable itself, and Is there some way of stopping it happening?
OIC now. I think you having some battery saving app and this app turning off WiFi when iz not used. What apps or registry mods you have installed on Leo?
You have the same behavior after hard reset?
My Leo don't disable WiFi. When i go outside (for ex to work) and back after few hours my Leo connecting to my home wireless network automaticly.
I remember, that i had the same problem like you and it was caused by app, which had duty to save battery.

WIFI Issues

I've had my Nexus for about a week now and noticed two strange issues with the WIFI connection.
1. I can connect to WIFI successfully at home but as soon as I go out and it switches to the 2G network and then later go back inside the WIFI doesn't auto connect it will stay on 2G, I have to disable and enable WIFI to connect to my home WIFI, is there a way round this or is it a bug?
2. Whenever I'm out an about and the phone detects a WIFI network even if its not configured to connect to the WIFI network the phone seems to disable 2G Data connection and continually notifies me of a WIFI network being in range and wanting to configure it, is there anyway of disabling this behavior and allowing the 2G Data connection to be active when no configured WIFI network are in range?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Jon
Really can't help you much on the settings as I don't quite have my N4 but you should always turn wifi off when you're not using it. You will get much better battery and you wont have problem with #2. Sorry I couldn't really help much.
Sent from my epic touch, waiting for my Nexus 4

I have the same issue number 1. I find the battery is getting used quickly and the wifi will not connect. if i disable then enable, it quickly connects to the known wifi signal. I can see a different battery decay slope if I let this problem persist for a few hours, it then reverts to its usual slope once wifi is restarted. This problem usually only occurs once a day on average. I hope someone knows how to solve this issue.
cheers

[Q] Wifi drains a lot more than 3G during deep sleep

After some time with my G2 I've resolved all my wakelocks and I've been getting about 3 days battery life with moderate usage. Which is great.
However, I've got one issue that's been unresolved. During deep sleep, I lose about 13% per night when connected to Wifi. If I am connected with 3G I lose 2-3%. Can anyone else confirm this?
Wifi should be a lot more power efficient, no?
I think this pretty much depends on the WIFI reception - if the mobile has to search for the WIFI signal frequently and the connection is unstable then it's logical that the turned on WIFI will drain the battery.

The signal is strong, router in the same room as the phone. No more than 5m distance.
hmmm that's strange then...
have you checked these two settings in the extended WIFI settings:
- turn WIFI off when signal is weak > make sure tu turn this off
- turn WIFI off ehen no internet connection
just guessing, but maybe these settings let your Mobile search for a (stronger) signal more often, even though it wouldn't be necessary....

It is strange. I don't get it.
I've already tried those extended wifi settings but to no avail.

WiFi won't connect to know Networks when screen is off

As the title suggests, my phone will not connect to known WiFi networks if I do not wake the phone myself.
Image being away from home, having both mobile data and WiFi enabled. The screen is off throughout the whole time and when I reach home it is supposed to connect to my WiFi. Instead, it connects to my WiFi only if I wake the phone. If I leave the phone sleeping (standby) it will stay on mobile data, unless I wake the phone myself.
Is this regular behaviour?
PS. The phone has not problem retaining connection to WiFi networks when sleeping. It just won't make a new connection even to know networks.
There is a setting in wifi settings under advanced where you can change how and when the wifi must be on/off.

If you mean "Keep WiFi on during sleep", I have it enabled already!
Have you played around with power saving settings?
