I got through most of the rooting process with some issues but I got through them...
In the mean time, I was in safestrap and went to wipe, then install MOAR but for some reason I might have messed up and wiped everything and it rebooted. Now I get the black Samsung Galaxy S5 Custom Powered by Android screen, nothing else. I cannot get back into Safestrap and I cannot get it to load Odin - it goes to maintenance mode instead of the other.
Step 0. Unrooted OA8
Step 1. Odin'd back to 4.4.2
Step 2. Installed and ran towel root
Step 3. Installed and ran busybox
Step 4. Installed safestrap, and booted into recovery
Step 5. backup was created!
Step 6. Added MOAR rom to install list and then wiped everything but SD card...then it rebooted to the black samsung custom screen...
**EDIT** For some reason the 4th or 5th time's a charm...I pulled the battery and one more time tried to load into Odin mode. For some reason this time it worked! So, I wasted no time and am putting the 4.4.2 back on through Odin and plan to redo towelroot, busybox, and safestrap...
**EDIT2** Well I was able to get it back to safestrap and then "successfully" installed MOAR 6.5, then rebooted and it went into recovery mode. So I booted back to ODIN and installed the OA8 kernel, thinking that was the problem. Now, it is stuck at the black Galaxy S5 powered by android screen. I understand it takes a while for 1st boot but I let it go for about half an hour and the OP says it will take a while to boot on the "clock" screen so I think something is wrong...ideas??
Black screen of death... anyone have an idea? MOAR 6.5 installed "successfully", went to download mode (ODIN) and flashed OA8 kernel , now this:

You need to already be on OA8 before you install MOAR. Follow these instructions to get to rooted OA8. Then flash an earlier kernel to get back to safestrap and boot into recovery. Install MOAR and then reboot. Don't forget to do a full wipe before installing MOAR.

So after getting kitkat installed and getting through safestrap, I need to install G900V_OA8_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM ?
I did all this: 4. If you do not already have root access you must first flash the G900VVRU1ANCG_Full_Odin.tar (flash in Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+)), root with Towelroot (this version does not require internet access), install Safestrap, then proceed with the above process.
then it says to do this: 1. Place the G900V_OA8_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM onto your ext-sdcard.
2. From Safestrap recovery press "Wipe" then "Advanced Wipe" and wipe everything but your ext-sdcard.
3. From the main menu press "Install," then select and install the G900V_OA8_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM.
4. Once complete, from the main menu press "Reboot," then "System." Done!
when would I install MOAR then? and what about the Kernels? Sorry, I'm a bit of a n00b

After you follow those instructions you then Odin the NK2 kernel to get safestrap to come up again (hit recovery when it comes up) do a full wipe, then install MOAR. Reboot your phone and you are done.

PROGRESS!
I kept getting the black Samsung screen until I flashed VZW_BOA8_RETAIL_FIRMWARE_ONLY.tar.md5 (instead of the kernel only). Now I have the MOAR clock. So, assuming this takes 10-20 minutes I will hopefully be up an running on rooted OA8 MOAR awesomeness. :good:

I have made a mistake which was was to use TWRP Manager (ROOT) to update my recovery, it found latest update then
1. i followed on screen instructions to install it, phone rebooted and got stuck in downloading mode
2. i had to hook it up to my PC to run odin and flash my original hltespr-recovery-4.4.img
3. phone then rebooted and booted successfully, i then tried to reboot into recovery (to make sure it works ok now) and phone gone into downloading mode
4. i had to repeat step 2
My phone is working fine as long as i dont try and access my recovery, i really dont want to wipe my phone and start again.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Why don't you just reflash the twrp for your variant with Odin?
Don't use any apps to do the dirty work for you. The safest way is always best which is PC Odin.

thats what i did in step 2
Retry to flash twrp but in odin, untick auto reboot. After flashed, force reboot from download mode to recovery mode yourself
If roslis idea works then good. In case you need more do a rom reflash with odin and reset to ? state. Then try twrp again. Maybe some files left that mess with it.
I decided to finally root my Wifi only Galaxy Tab 4, 16 gig. To my understanding it is the T330. It had the latest OTA - 5.1.1 I believe?
After installing TWRP and trying to flash SuperSU it won't boot past the Samsung logo.
I did the following:
Prior to today I have had the USB drivers installed
Downloaded and extracted ODIN 3.0.9
Downloaded TWRP 2.8.7 Tar file for the T3xx series
Downloaded SuperSU zip file for version 2.46
I opened up ODIN, unchecked the "Auto Reboot" box (after seeing elsewhere that it was needed when flashing the recovery), checked the box for "AP" and selected the .tar file for TWRP. I clicked start, everything went correctly, I removed the USB cable and manually restarted the device by holding the power button. Once it was off I then held the power button, volume up, and home button to boot into recovery, and to my excitement I was greeted with TWRP. So far it looked like it was going according to plan. A screen came up saying that the system was currently read only, and it was giving me the choice to allow the recovery to change it. I swiped to allow it to change it so the system partitions were not read only. I went to the install option, and selected the SuperSU zip file. Installed it, it said that it installed correctly. I went back to the main menu and rebooted the device. That's when things did NOT go according to plan. It played the nice little boot sound, the animated Samsung logo came up, and I waited. I waited some more. I continued to wait. After 10 minutes of the Samsung animation repeating I assumed that trouble was afoot and turned the tablet off and attempted to get back into recovery, which it did. I then turned it off and checked to see if I could still get into Download Mode: and it can and the PC can see it as connected when I load up ODIN.
So I have the tablet soft bricked. My goal was to have it rooted with custom recovery to install roms.
If that's not possible, I assume my best bet would be to use ODIN to push the Samsung files over and flash it back to factory that way, undoing what I have done?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I tried to be as detailed as possible to assist anyone who may be willing to help.

Have you tried wiping dalvik and cache through recovery? If that doesn't help maybe do a factory reset before restoring the factory image?
Sent from my SM-T330 using Tapatalk
Edit: I think this might be what you need
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3176668
I tried to wipe cache and dalvik - still gets stuck at the Samsung logo... Tried to do a factory reset from TWRP and after rebooting from recovery it continues to get stuck. I'll try flashing the kernel but I don't understand why that would have gotten messed with from flashing the recovery and installing the SuperSU part.
Okay I take back my statement... flashed the kernel, after flashing did a cache and dalvik wipe and boom... it boots!!! You are officially my hero! Thank you!

Just tried to flash Xposed on here using the Samsung-based one from Arter. Now that phone doesn't allow me to boot past the flashing android logo. Should I flash the uninstaller via recovery ("update via SD card"), or completely wipe the ROM, go back to NCG(I think), and then reflash it? I'm kinda at a lost at home I should handle this. I've heard that I shouldn't flash anything via the stock recovery on FlashFire-based roms.
You can't flash anything via the stock recovery. I recommend using Safestrap--read about it.
To make sure everything works completely on any firmware, I recommend doing the following:
Flash this with odin, boot the phone and go through the setup wizard:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24052804347794178
Then, reboot to download mode again and flash this:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24052804347776876
After it boots, root it with towelroot, install busybox, then install safestrap. There are directions posted already for this.
Look for jrkruse's "rooting tools for sdcard" zip and install it after you reboot into safestrap. Then you can wipe and install your rom and the firmware and never have to use odin again. You reinstall that zip after installing the ROM to get the apps for using safestrap without odin, also.
I followed the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/development/safestrap-odin-safestrap-flashable-t3161043 to install Safestrap on my phone with rooted BOE1, my phone rebooted, and I'm looking at a screen that say Android System Recovery <3e> LRX21T.G900VVRU2BOE1
I was trying to install the MOAR rom, but I fear that now I'm stuck in this strange recovery with no way out. Could someone please tell me exactly what I will need to do to get out, and possibly how to actually boot to Safestrap?
Not to leave anything out, though I'll look the fool if I don't, while in this recovery I wiped Data+Cache and attempted to install the ROM, got some sort of error about footers and signature verification (it happened pretty quick then rebooted) and wound up back in recovery, so I tried flashing the BOE1 kernel, same problem, back to recovery.

S5 doesn't have a custom recovery per se, so any app that "reboots to recovery" will go to the Android stock recovery which your in. You can't flash anything of value in there, and can't install a custom recovery. You should just be able to turn the phone off then on again to get back to the stock rom, right?
It's been so long since I've done it, but won't safestrap only install on kitkat? Doors it even work in lollipop? Must people use flashfire I think
I should probably mention now that I got it fixed. Following more instructions in that thread, I did everything in the order of the first step again, using ODIN, flashed back to NC2 (I think? Going off memory) rooted, installed Safestrap, flashed MOAR, and the OC4 firmware, and here I am.
I have searched and can not seem to find a solution
Here is where I am at:
Odin back to stock 4.4.2
Root with Towel Root
Install SuperSU, Update, and Disable KNOX
Install busy box
Install SafeStrap
Install Recovery
Boot into SafeStrap Recovery
Create Backup, Create a Partition and active Rom Slot 1
Wipe System, Cache, Data
Install Zip via External Card
Install goes perfect every time
Reboot
Phone gets stuck on the "Samsung Galaxy S5" screen
I can get into the stock recovery (not safestrap) and Download Mode
I then Odin back to stock and try again
I have tried 4 times and 4 different Roms. Has to be something I am missing
would using Flashfire possibly fix this?
EDIT:
Current set up
Android 4.4.2
Kernal 3.4.0
Build KOT49H.G900VRU1ANCG
update: Same problem with flashfire....
update 2: Could have been bad/wrong kernel. Going to odin to 5.0 and see what happens

I think the problem may be you are trying to use the ROM slot. I thought I read that you are supposed to flash ROMs in the stock slot with safestrap.
Thank you for the help
I fixed it but not really sure how.
I THINK it was messed up because I had the wrong Kernel
Here is what I did:
Flashed latest Lollipop with Odin (on parrells on a Mac, worked really well)
Followed the KingRoot Guide to root phone
After a few attempts got root back
Installed the Rom suggested in the the Kingroot Thread
Found some script on XDA to debloat
I really wanted to try the toxic rom but going to play it safe for now...
ROM slot 1 is your problem, as it isn't supported on our devices.
Flash to stock slot only. Ignore the ROM slots.
If you did indeed have the wrong kernel flashed, you would never successfully boot.
Sometimes you also have to wipe cache and dalvik cache again after installing a ROM.
