Nook as 2nd monitor (extend display) win8 - Nook Touch General

Nookie has been really helpful to me the last few days Made me feel generous. Guess I don't have time to do this properly but I want to share. When I get time later I'll have to write a proper guide. Basically with Win8 you can create an unscreen part of your desktop which you can extend onto. You can then view this with VNC on your Nook. This might be more interesting to you than simply mirroring your dispay over WiFi so you can read your tablet in the sun.
Some screenshots attached.
You can do the same thing in linux. A guide for another day - please share if you get this working.
It's been years and still Nook NST is still unique...

[Q] Local retailer (US) that stocks Lenovo Thinkpad tablet?

I am considering buying one of these but would like to try it out in a store before I buy it. Does anyone know of a US retailer that stocks them?
I am mostly curious about the following things:
1) How good is it for taking notes in college/university classes? Can you rest your palm on the screen while using the stylus?
2) Is there a way to view the notes taken on pdf on a computer?
3) Is it pretty solid feel wise? Or does it feel like it will fall apart after a couple years?
4) How much bloatware comes on it and is it hard to remove via rooting?
5) Does the screen go dark enough for comfortable reading in dimly lit rooms?
Thanks for the info.
the notes are great, I use Quill, as it works nearly perfect, in the app i have turned on pen input only and jot tons and tons of notes all day long.
You can export the notes to various files, while im not sure about PDF there is certainly a format that can be read on your desktop
Like all lenovo products i've had its built to last like an enterprise system should be. as long as you take care of it it will last a long time past EOL
Bloatware isnt too bad, theres still some stuff lenovo managed to get into the system pretty deep (like the status bar wheel widget thing.) but its never bothered me that much as it only comes up at the home screen.
screen brightness works great in dim rooms, i tend to read books by a small lamp in bed most of the time with minimal strain.
I purchased mine from lenovo direct so I dont know about any local retailers.
Thanks for the info. However when I asked about notes on PDFs I should have clarified a bit. I was asking about their PDF viewer that lets you take notes on the PDF document and weather that can be exported to something useful.
Also I thought of one more thing: If I have my notes backed up with something like spideroak, can the notes be converted on a computer? I ask because I am worried about taking a semesters worth of notes on it then having it die and there being no way to read them without getting a new tablet.

ezPDF allows you to fill out pdf forms, underline, strikeout, and add freehand drawings as well as circles/squares/etc. It should do what you're looking for.
https://market.android.com/details?id=udk.android.reader&feature=search_result
and if you have the file saved as a pdf on your sd card you should be able to open it with any pdf reader (pc or otherwise).
The quill note taking app he mentioned allows you to export your notes to sdcard pdfs
Thanks for the info.
One last thing: has anyone used connect bot or another ssh client on this? I am curious if the keys on the keyboard folio such as escape quotes tild and whatnot all send the proper characters. I had a bluetooth keyboard for my N1 a while back that sent some weird unicode characters for the quotes making terminal usage very difficult.
https://market.android.com/details?id=berserker.android.apps.sshdroid&hl=en
I have used SSH droid with WINSCP worked like a charm, I'm by no means an experienced user with SSH, i just used it to dig around the file system.
SSH droid is a server for the android device, I am asking about using a client on the android device.
My bad, I left my brain at home today... I will test it for you this evening and let you know if the client works with the keymapping
Cool thanks, I look forward to hearing your results.
Update: I just ordered one, so if its too much of a bother don't worry about testing the connect bot thing. My shiny object syndrome overwhelmed my frugal side. Can't wait to get my hands on it.
It works like a charm tested with Moba SSH home 1.22 and connect bot, all the keys from the folio map properly and I haven't seen anything odd at this point, also SSH'd into a couple of Access points over my VPN at work with the TPT to test as well.
Congrats on the TPT! you're gonna love it!
Unfortunately the keys do not map properly, escape is still connected to "back" in the android os and ctrl is connected to "menu". Does anyone know if there is some way to map these to their proper functions?
Thanks

What exact steps and files for triple boot: stock nook/OSX/Android for total noob?

Edit of my previous post (138 views 0 replies) to be more clear and less ramble. Since my previous post version I have read through numerous posts and still don't get what exact files to use and how to use them since there isn't just any one direct way and things to use.
Problem:
Total noob to any of this terminology etc
Goods and Goals:
I have two nook tabs I just received with 1.4.3. I would like to keep the stock OS intact on the nooks while using a 32GB SD card for triple booting to OSX, and Android. Really? Really? I was just looking at the post pictures of your home screen threads. Can a windows tablet edition go on nook also? That is the first I've noticed anything of that even looking through tons of threads in the last several hours.
Background:
All the terminology here is overwhelming and beyond my knowledge. Needless to say I understand jack squat. I've searched for posts for complete noobs such as myself and nothing is direct and broken down step for step on what exactly to use and do. Its all technical and mentions multiple different things to use and do.
Ok While digging more I've ran into several threads that are self explanatory yet they lead to old information and files that don't exist or are just that old.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Finally through reading something that wasn't here on the forums from a member that understands much of the information is over people who are new to this and wrote up understandable information. (at least for where I'm at in the process) I think I have to go to frys and pick up an external card reader. The built in one on my HP obviously is one of the crappy ones that wont properly write to the microsd card. I had a card with space since it was brand new. Wrote the img file with the winwrite thing now it shows as an unformated sd card so I can't copy over anything to it as described in the following thread:
English instructions for Dummys:good:
So I won't know anything else until about 8:30am tomorrow when I get back from Frys.
If anyone cares to chime in though with some real idiot proof information feel free.
Well hooked up my phone with the sd card and did my thing with it. Same as using the reader in the laptop. So another hour and I can head to Frys.........
1) You mention Nook Tab. This is the Nook Color forum. Are you sure you have the right forum? They are different devices.
2) No Windows cannot be ran on here. However, you can use some sort of RDP application to remote into a windows machine and use from there.
3) OSX cannot be ran on this device. Unless I've completely missed someones project on the forums.
4) Leapinlar has a good reference post here for all things Nook Color.

I thought the nook color and nook tabs were the same setup when it comes to running different os on them. You mean to tell me everything I have been reading is null. Arg. lol:fingers-crossed:
This is the post in Development I was referencing.
Maybe I completely missunderstood the post and that's why I had so many views with no replies because everyone here was like WHAT? OSX on my nook.....
Wow talk about a complete different ball game with the tablet. Right off the bat I found basically the idiots guide to SD booting CM7. So much easier then for the NC.
I don't know about easier. I think its just that the NC has been around longer so some links references may be dead/old.
That being said, they are completely different hardware. XDA has a forum group for the Nook Tablet. You should be able to find what you need there.
Edit: That link you posted is still for the Nook Color. If you have the Nook Tablet you need to use the forums here

You are right. You completely misunderstood the post. They are not talking about running OSX on the nook. They are talking about running the script conversion tool on different devices, like Linux, DOS, OSX, and Windows. Nook can only run android based roms. The dual boot SD they are referencing runs CM7 and CM9 and leaves stock on emmc. All of those are android based roms.
And putting new roms on the Nook Color is much easier than putting them on the Nook Tablet. The Nook Color is completely open and capable of new roms. The Nook Tablet has a locked bootloader and a lot of fancy tricks must be done to get another rom to load at all.
And the exact steps to get triple boot with stock on emmc and two android roms on SD is here:

Yea got all that now that I found out there is a difference. It was a s-ton easier the this gapps this and that etc. It was use the windows writer software I already had. Plop in the sd card into my hp laptop reader download one file unzip it and set the writer to go to town. DONE. I have CM7 on SD running just fine on my nook tab. Now to do it to another card for my fiancee's tablet. Hopefully her medical grade mouth stick comes in the mail today so she can actually use heat touch devices now. :good: Thanks for your help of slapping this noob in the face and kicking him to the right area of the forums. [Q] Rooted Nook ST w/touchnooter & noogie.img no wifi

I have a Nook Simple Touch. I purchased it approximately a month ago. That would be September 2012.
I want to check out Library books.
I use Linux. Zenwalk 7.0
Overdrive seems to only work with Adobe Digital Edition. (cough) Windows or MAC.
ADE has DRMs.
B&N don't allow the installation of Overdrive App. Sideloading don't work etc.
So I wanted to root my nook.
I rooted my nook with noogie.img and tried it with touchnooter which I liked better.
Everything was working great. I accessed my Email. Just started checking it out. Started to install Opera Mini, when the public wifi where I was at shut down for the night.
Next morning I start up my nook again on public wifi; apparently from what I understand from other forums and threads is that nook automatically updates. B&N have decided Nook ST doesn't need or deserve Overdrive. Despite there terms of usage which say you can surf the net with Nook they lie. So their latest update blocked all my wifi.
I have restored to factory stock. Lost all my books and my ability to use my Nook at all because I can't access the internet because B&N reroute me to a page that tells my all my wifi is blocked.
I have formatted the noogie. img sd card and added bravo_update.dat. Followed all the directions here. Restoring WiFi Config @ nookDevs.com/tips and tricks]
Would appreciate any help I could get.
Thank you in advance.
I cant help with restoring your Nook, but when you do -
I download with Overdrive, then remove the DRMS using ePub DRM Removal or Epubor DRM Removal.
there are also other DRM removal programs out there.
DRM removal
Dear Ladykayaker,
I'm not looking to remove the DRMs. Though eventually I may be, LOL. I respect my library. I respect the copyrights of the authors.
My problem is I don't want left out of the party. Just because I use Linux. I shouldn't be left out of Overdrive. Just because I bought the cheapest Nook because of the long battery life, ease of reading the pages, cost effectiveness etc.; doesn't mean that I don't want to use the library.
However this thread is about getting my Nook working.
Perhaps I'll start another thread about Overdrive and Linux but I'm not sure that this website is the proper place to do that.
I really appreciate your feedback though Ladykayaker.
Still working on getting my NOOK working.
Today I'm going to try SalsichaNooter.
Thanks,
dandielionous

AFAIK, B&N never said that you could browse with the NST.
This sounds like a problem with whichever WiFi you are using, not B&N.
The OverDrive through Adobe Digital Editions uses different DRM than the OverDrive app on the Nook.
I use both, but you are limited to the respective readers unless you strip DRM.
Overdrive, Linux, Nook ST and Me
Wow, lots of good stuff here.
First:
ladykyaker maybe I should have listened to you better. Okay I'm going to do work on stripping DRMs
Second: Renate NST I appreciate your information that Nook and Adobe Digital Edition use two different DRM.
Next: Renate NST I have no idea what AFAIK stands for. If you're trying to say some version of FYI that I would understand. SO... FYI for you Renate.
NOOK™ TERMS OF SERVICE
These Terms of Service (this "Agreement") is a legally binding agreement made by and between Barnes & Noble, Inc. ("we," "us," or "our") and you regarding your use of your NOOK™ eReader ("NOOK").
THIS AGREEMENT SETS FORTH THE RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS APPLICABLE TO THE USE OF YOUR NOOK, SO PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY BEFORE USING YOUR NOOK. BY USING YOUR NOOK, YOU AGREE THAT YOU HAVE READ, UNDERSTAND AND AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THIS AGREEMENT. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO BE SO BOUND, YOU MUST RETURN YOUR NOOK AND RELATED SOFTWARE AS PROVIDED IN SECTION 1(b) BELOW.
1. Using Your NOOK.
(a) Your NOOK, the Service and Digital Content. Your NOOK is an electronic device that is designed to allow you to read digitized electronic content such as eBooks and digital periodicals ("Digital Content"). Your NOOK is also designed to connect wirelessly to the Internet to enable you to browse, preview, search for, purchase and download Digital Content; access the Barnes & Noble.com Web Site (the "Web Site") and other web sites; interface with social networking sites; and access, use, and participate in other services, features, functions and promotions (all features described in this sentence, collectively, the "Service"). Your NOOK also allows you to load and access your own content onto the device for your personal use ("Sideloaded Content").
Now I don't know what that means to you Renate but to me that means I can use my Nook to connect wirelessly to the internet. That I can browse, preview, search for, puchase and download Digital Content, interface with social networking sites and access, use and participate in other services features, functions and promotions.
Now this is a 144 page document so I'm sure they have a legal way out of it. B & N does offer Overdrive for the tablet and the Nook Color but not for the simple touch. Oh BTW at the end of that 144 page document are special conditions for AT&T customers.
However, I don't want to argue over this.
I was hoping for intelligent feedback about my Nook. As far as I am concerned this thread is over. I will start a new thread about Overdrive and another thread about Rooting my Nook then perhaps there won't be so much confusion.
Thanks for the help.
dandielionous
P.S.
Ya'll can do what you want with this thread. I'm not responding here anymore.
Oh 1 more thing. It says clearly on the web page I am being blocked by B&N.
Also I am using public wifi. So no matter where I go I can't access the wifi with the Nook or I couldn't. I have solved that problem.
I hope you have put a little more thought and research Renate into those other 855 posts you've responded to.
Sorry, AFAIK means "as far as I know".
You get credit for reading the whole legalese, I didn't.
I would really appreciate a screenshot of this screen saying that B&N is blocking you.
AFAIK, nobody has ever reported this.

Can you help me to revive my old NST to his good old glory days

Hi folks,
I haven't been using my NST for a very long time. I was expecting a decline of interest for my old love but i thought i would figure out a solution to use my NST like i used to. But i couldnt. Because I haven't tried any sort of hacking stuff that involved rooting, installing customs roms etc. for the past 3-4 years ,i almost forgot everything about these matters. So i am an absolute noob right now :/ Memory is a b*tch and mine is weak
I really really want to release my Nook Simple Touch from Barnes&Noble's ugly stock chains. I checked some topics and i saw that most of them are dead. My question is; Is it still possible to do these things to my nook
1- root it
2-sign in to google and install a working playstore apk
3- find a working "read it later" like application which suits NST
4- find a good pdf,epub reader app
Can you please guide me through these steps, your help will be greatly appreciated. I may figure out a way to do these and don't bother with these silly questions but i can't look at led/lcd screens for long periods of time because i have a problem with my eyes. :/
Best wishes,
Baran
Here are some suggestions & pointers to get you started:
Factory-reset your NST for a clean-start base using Nook Manager (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040351).
Update to BN ROM to v1.2.1 (if your NST has an older ROM version)
Root using using Nook Manager.
Install ReLaunch Launcher (http://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/general/relaunch-best-nst-launcher-version-1-4-t3060782) and essential Google apps (e.g., Market, SearchMarket, Gmail, etc.) using NTGAppsAttack (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2086582).
Backup early and often. NookManager makes it easy to do this, so although it takes a bit of time, it's a good idea. However, NM only stores the most recent backup. You can keep "snapshots" of major hurdles by connecting your NST to your computer while NookManager is loaded up. You will see the Backup section on the SD card. Copy the two files in the folder onto your computer. I like to store them in dated folders also containing a small text file that describes the major changes. Then you can drag them back onto the SD card when NookManager has loaded to restore a specific backup--if the need arises.
I keep three or four of these backups while I am making changes. It's a whole lot better than starting from scratch if thing go south later in the game.
For pdf reading I can recommend ezpdf, if you can find an old version. It stopped working reasonably on the NST from about version 2.5 (e.g. you couldn't see text in the menu, probably because the font colour wasn't available on the eink screen, or the font type not installed - either way, really annoying if you want to change settings by guessing), but I remember I used to run it fine with some slightly older version.
Hay The Best Reader for NST is Renate's Temblast Reader
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54201382&postcount=94
It is not perfect but very viable for Nook.
I hope Renate will continue the development.
Still Nook STR is the best ereader out there. It is sad that it is no longer available officially.
Good luck with your project
Gosh!
I'm still working on the reader, it's had a lot of improvement.
I just have to find the time to get it out.
Here's a preview on my Nook Glow Plus.
(I use the same app on my NST, LG phone and Nexus 7 tablet.)
I am not hijacking this thread.
Renate love to hear about the improvement.
Renate Could you please add text selection & a Dictionary.English is my second language so I like a build in Dic like in Nook reader.
Thank Keep up the great work genius
(Sorry I didn't ment to hijack this thread)

Linux On Dex - First Impressions

So, I am at work and I showed off Linux on Dex to some other Developers and Engineers here.
Impressed they were, but it's time to really dig in.
Here is what I love about it on first look:
Great to have a fleshed Linux experience on my phone
Great dev tools come with the image (IntelliJ and also Visual Studio Code and more)
Has plenty of apps to get you started and it's pretty thoughtful
Looks great at 1920x1080 as well as 2560x1440 resolutions on a monitor
Switching between Dex and Ubuntu is pretty snappy
Things I didn't like:
Just a LITTLE bit laggy sometimes
Need to either use ARM compiled apps or compile them yourself
The Default 10GB partition size was too small, so I would suggest using 15GB at least, after updates/upgrades (Ubuntu OS updates that is), you'll still have about 35% free space with 15GB disk
You cannot "install" this on the SDCard, only internal memory, so keep that in mind if you have the 128GB model and tons of apps
Once installed, you cannot delete the 3GB+ zip file you downloaded, so there is that wasted space as well (ok, I have not tried REALLY hard to delete it yet, but Google Files won't delete it, nor do I know the repercussions of deleting this file too)
I'm still trying to work out how to access the files on the device (outside the Linux container), not sure if it is possible, but I have not had a lot of time with it as of now
BONUS!!
When you are not in Dex mode (normal handset mode), you can still launch Linux on Dex, but you cannot get the full desktop experience.
Click on the Terminal icon under the RUN button and you can drop into the Ubuntu Shell and still use commands (like SSH-ing to servers using your certs and stuff).
Of course, the down side, small screen. Hey, in a pinch, when I am on the road and needs to SSH into an AWS instance and run a couple commands, I won't complain!!
All in all, I think this will be great for Dev's to play with, not sure how useful it REALLY will be, but I know from a DevOps/Architect/Engineer, it's nice to have as a backup to be able to actually take care of things without having to drag out the whole laptop.
All this, with a $20 adapter.
Any other thoughts for those that have used it?
Hello friend, I have mine installed on my 128gb Sdcard.
How did you get it on your SD Card?
Thanks!

Move the file from LoD folder to the SD card and reassign the file location in the Linux on Dex app, it worked for me but moved it back to internal storage to ensure best performance .
My impression? They will poorly maintain it and I suspect it will be discontinued without any real notice. Registration was broken for well over a week before signups ended. You cannot get in contact with anyone from the team. Care doesn't even know it exists.
I am yet to find a use case that improves upon remote access to an Ubuntu 18.04 VM running on a cloud or at home, but I'm not a developer.
Perhaps if you are stuck somewhere without an Internet connection and feel like coding somewhere in the mountains or in the jungle.. But then you would need a handy monitor, keyboard, mouse and a power source..?
I think I can sum this up in one simple sentence - "Because I can..."
It's like having linux on a PS3, because it could.
Haven't had a chance to use it yet but looks promising. That doesn't mean it will be supported very well, time will tell.
Hardware wise it should work very well, and there is ALWAYS a good reason to have a handy (mostly) self-contained PC with you in case you CAN'T access the net...
Would be great to get an idea of some real life use cases..
Would be very happy to see this project pick up some community developer attention, the platform is only as good as the tools developed for it.
In the absence of an official LoD forum for developers perhaps that community should be developed here.

I got this installed on my 8GB Note 9 today. I didn't get registered for the beta, but download the app and the Ubuntu image and got it all up and running today. My only complaint so far is it won't run full screen on Dex. That may be because I'm running the Pie Beta. Not sure how it operates on Oreo Dex.
I'll play around with it more later. I basically just plugged into my monitor and opened it up today.
Well, here is a real-life use case that saved me a TON of time and effort.
I set up the Linux on Dex with many tools and configs I need to be able to do my work (Sr. DevOps Architect/Engineer) on my AWS servers. I had an instance that was having some issues and was notified via the monitoring platform and was able to get my phone out, run the Ubuntu Shell and SSH/Fix the issue without ever having to pull out the laptop and tether it while on the train headed home.
There ARE some use cases where this will come in handy, but I do agree that these are real "edge" cases too. No "normal" user will ever really find this helpful.

Full screen on oreo.. Have you tried Dex max app?
planning to install LoD and curious if it can actually decompile and recompile apk's as a laptop would..?! mostly I'm interested in Themes for Samsung.. using few apk as templates to swap files, images and recompiling the apk, will it be able and will it properly sign it ?! and if so which way should I go?! do I need to install java, SDK, plugin I saw there ?!
any advice would be great.. thanx..
