Business uses for Galaxy Tab.

Im curious how business people are using their Tabs daily.

Luckily our business (see my sig) is Google Apps based so there's native support for several email accounts, several calendars. Also I'm the head of IT, so VPN, FTP, SSH, Remote Desktop apps are being used, as for our CEO, mostly memo, and executive assistant (widget & app), thinkfree office, pdf viewver FTP, unified remote (for presentations with laptop and projector)... and of course multiplayer games for the company heads
This is the last week... next week? who knows

Though I'm not technically a "business person" in the conventional sense, I use mine for the following when at the studio:
Google apps, MS Office files, calender, calls, texting, notetaking and whiteboard capturing via camera, and of course something to do in the loo.
Best thing it's doing for me at work is allowing me to use it a big, easy to read and navigate email terminal when I'm at my desk. Can keep up with the steady stream of mail without having to ALT-TAB on my desktop machine, where screen real-estate and CPU cycles are kind of important. What I do on my desktop machine is touchy about losing focus and popping out to check mail in the middle of a task could cost me a lot of time restarting the process.
My smartphone could do email too, obviously, but this is a helluva lot easier, prop it up in landscape, leave screen on, glance, touch, scroll, and most that need a response I can deal with on the Tab, without screwing up what I'm doing on the desktop.

I sold my 3G iPad and got a new Air & a Tab.
ToDo & Calendar - I have my Tab set up with the lock screen disabled so I can see info at a glance (something sorely lacking on the iPad). Thanks to widgets, I have my Remember the Milk to-do list ($25/year) right on my main home screen. The Android implementation of RTM is really the best out there, but it also easily synchs with my iPhone and my desktop so I always have it easily accessible. Likewise, calendar implementation is by far the best on the Tab and thanks to Google, synchs seamlessly with my iPhone and calendar on my mac. I have a large calendar widget on an alternative home screen so a quick swipe to the left shows whats coming up on my calendar.
Square - We offer pickup and drop off services for customers, so a lot of times I'm delivering stuff that needs to be paid for. Square is perfect for this. Its a little reader that plugs into the headphone jack and allows you to swipe credit cards for a reasonable percentage (no monthly fee). Customers sign with their finger and a receipt is e-mailed to them. Really great with the size of the Tab and the customers are always wowed.
Dropbox & Evernote - Cloud computing! Drop box lets me have the same files on all of my devices, 2+ GB free. This is how I get almost all my document and application files onto my Tab. I even have the screencap (on my desktop and laptop) default to a folder in my dropbox, so if I see something on the screen and want to save it quick with formatting, bam its there. Taking that one step further, Evernote lets me clip web pages and synch documents to be accessible on all my devices. The really cool trick of evernote is that everything in it is search-able - even images or PDFs that contain text become search-able once its uploaded to the cloud. Great for signs, menus, business cards, etc...
LogMeIn Ignition - The desktop app is free but Android client is $30. Pretty basic, allows me to remote in to my desktop at work in case I need to do something I can't do on my Android or access something at work. Usually I use it to drag a file into my dropbox that I might need.
Tethering - Yes! Built in, and what makes the monthly fee so much more palatable. With built-in tethering I can hop on with my laptop when I need a bigger screen or to access things not support in Android.
Otherwise, I use the browser for parts look up and to show customers products if we're walking around the showroom floor. The size of the tab lends itself easily to be stuck in my back pocket so I can carry it with me and use it to update my todo list or take notes in evernote. I use Kelley Blue Book as a fast way to look up car values, but thats pretty specific to my industry.

I am looking at purchasing a Tab but I ned to be able to VPN to our network and RDT to my office desktop. So far I am not having success with this using my Droid X. Is this easier with the Tab? What apps or procedures are you using for this?

I use it to place my orders (Chef). I find it alot easier to carry my TAB (touch srcreen) around to check inventory and order what's needed than my netbook (touch pad). It's also connected through Rogers H network and one of my stoarage rooms is in another building so I can just take it with me and no longer have to just take notes then finish ordering when I get back to the kitchen.
I also have my emails on hand from my distributors and msgs from my reps all in the palm of my hand with a screen big enough to actually use comfortably. All that and the instant internet access makes looking up recipe ideas, costing specials and negotiating food prices really easy.

[Q] Using a tablet like the Xoom with Office Software

This question has (to my best knowledge) never been addressed in its own thread. I want to use the Xoom (or any other laptop-substitute for that matter) to edit Word and Excel documents, look at presentations on a screen instead of print outs, make last minute changes etc. Maybe take notes during meetings/presentations... you get the idea. It might also be used as multimedia device.
Now, with the currently available accessories (I really like the idea of a case with integrated bluetooth keyboard) is this a reasonable expectation of the Xoom?

I'm not using a bluetooth keyboard but using docs to go with pretty good success. I get an error loading to gdocs but it still does the upload. Some advanced excel functions and word formatting are not the but its decent. The powerpoint part of docs to go is garbage. I have also been using repligo for annotating pdf files and it is very slick well worth the 4.99.
I am trying to use my xoom in place of all the paper docs i used to print and take to meetings. Also signed up to beta test the swiftkey tablet keyboard to see if that works better than this stock honeycomb one.

Powerpoint Presentations on Xoom without Format Issues

So there are a couple Powerpoint Apps for the Xoom. Unfortunately, like allot of Office Suites there is some rendering and formatting issues when it comes to Powerpoint Documents. So if you are looking for an app to deliver your Powerpoints on, you might have to look elsewhere because they most likely won’t look the same. Unfortunately there isn’t allot of options out there, in fact I couldn’t find any. Please someone prove me wrong . However I have been going through a couple solutions. One solution is one I use at work because formatting problems even occur going across different Microsoft Powerpoint versions. So we convert to PDF and then present with a PDF viewer in fullscreen. An app like this doesn’t seem to exist yet. Again please someone prove me wrong . I dug a little deeper and came up with this Workaround. You can save your Powerpoint as Pictures on your computer. Its very easy in Microsoft Powerpoint and then you can load them in a folder on the Xoom and use the stock Gallery App to view them. And you know what… It Works!!! It has a very nice full-screen effect works great on the projector, and really isn’t too many additional steps. Its not the best thing in the world. But if you want to deliver powerpoint on your Xoom without worry about format getting messed up, this is a workable solution for now. I apologize if this was already suggested on the Xoom forum, I didn't come across it. I have a video also showing this in action.

I mentioned that in a very early thread but not as detailed. I also posted a comprehensive comparison between three different office suites (will post links later). Downside with PDF conversion is that animations are lost and I am not sure that the PDF rendering on the Xoom is 100% accurate.

Actually docs to go is much better at displaying power point then quick office pro. Ironically I had docs to go first. Then I bought the xoom and found that the native quickoffice app was better and accurately displaying excel compared to Docs to Go so when I got an email about quickoffice hd pro for tablets I was all over it. Excel was wonderful. Then today I had a presentation in a meeting and I thought great I'll play the slides on my xoom. It was a video conference. Anyway the slides were aweful. Formatting was a mess even on simple slides. I thought maybe it was a bug in quickoffice hd pro and tried the regular quckoffice. Same results. Finally I tried Docs to Go and low and behold the pages were perfect.
BTW word also displays more correctly in quickoffice then in Docs to go. Looks like the quickoffice guys just dropped the ball big time on power point. I'd say that Doc's to Go is better all around office program.

Sounds like an embarrasing situation with ppt and quickoffice. You should report that to them!

Keeping WP8 Samsung Ativ

after 3 months with the Ativ WP8 I start thinking to change to android (eventually Galaxy4) for good reasons
1. Incomplete BT stack - no keyboard to connect or certain consoles
2. Miserable sync with Outlook and One-Notes
3. Limited camera functions - e.g. where to save and to transfer to a PC)
4. Cannot use DropBox
5. Useless letters in apps
6. Want not and cannot allow certain info an the cloud (SkyDrive)
7. Calendar - no weekly, daily and to-do app
8. No basic info like battery status, signal strength, Wi-Fi visible as a top bar
9. Better organization for apps, e.g. based on importance and not just one long list to scroll, why not at least two
I am aware that WP8 is a great improvement and with good tools, but I have to decide what serves my daily needs the best. Is there any major update in the next few months to expect. Any suggestions

Not sure if trolling or just ...

I mean it is very difficult to find the signal strength

If you're not happy with how the phone handles things and if it can't do certain things you need it to do the best way to go is to sell the phone and get one that does. Given that you already tried to find solutions for some of those things and found out that they could not be done differently on WP you are left with only two options:
- live with how things are done/can be done (e.g. Jump Lists in the App List, pinning important Apps to the Start Screen)
- get rid of the phone and use something else in the hopes of it doing things the way you want them done

You can be sure not a troll nor stupid. I use mobile phones from the beginning and can very well distinguish pros and cons. We can and do build out own servers and use the phone as a business tool. Just see what MS did with the BT stack, incomplete, you cannot connect a simple keyboard which is needed when taking notes in conferences, Using the cloud for confidential information is a nono, DropBox does not work with WP8.... Me or someone else calling stupid shows where your standard is.

When I make a final decision to sell the phone you will be the first for an offer. It will come with a nice black leather case open front and 32 GB SD card. I need some additional research to find the right solution.

So to avoid wasting more thread space criticizing OP:
1. Yes, the BT stack is limited, but what's there works well (other phones have all sorts of issues with BT freezing on connect, etc.)
2. If by "Outlook," you mean Outlook.com or an Exchange server, nothing syncs better with those than WP; same with OneNote; the only thing that would make sense is if you mean data stored in a local PST on the desktop Outlook app, which WP doesn't directly sync to-- valid point, but other platforms don't do native sync at all (or very well) either, so the only real comparison point is Windows Mobile 6.x lol; if you do want to do local Outlook syncing, try Akruto Sync
3. What's limited? Plug in a USB cable, or open your SkyDrive folder, and it's all there
4. Actually you can-- see the "Boxfiles" app
5. Don't know what you mean

7. The Calendar app has daily, agenda, and month views, along with to-dos- what more are you looking for?
8. All of that is in the top bar- just tap it

I need a weekly calendar which also shows to do and notes like in Outlook.. OneNote on the PC is not fully compatible with OneNote in WP8. I made it work, but it is a work around. In the list of Apps I have at least 10 single letters and when you click on it, it opens the full alphabet, nothing else. SkyDrive is for me only of limit use, A BT Keyboard is a deal breaker, I use the phone in meetings to take notes which later will be part of a client electronic file. Samsung Ativ is a nice phone, basically I like it, but it has to assist and function in my daily work. I do not care to store a lot of music or videos. Miss a good file manager. You mention the top bar, not on the Samsung above the tiles. It shows only the time. Imagine you have a fight with the IRS for hundred of thousand of $$ and I would as your attorney leave documents in your case on SkyDrive.

On the top bar, if you tap anywhere in the bar (on the time or anywhere to the left of it), the cell + Wifi + BT + battery status show up. They disappear after a few seconds in the interest of clean design (then show up only when there's a problem, like no signal or low battery). On the app list, in addition to the alphabetical jump-list, there's also a search button at the top-left.
The Calendar app has to-dos (see the "to-do" tab to the right of "agenda"). Week view is indeed missing-- MS should prob implement it in landscape view, as Apple did when it added week view in iOS 5. You can sort of approximate it by tapping month view -> day for each day of the week. Something weird about the month view is that if you look at it carefully on a 720p device in landscape, you'll notice the number of items matches how many you have scheduled for that day, but the actual text is gibberish (lorem ipsum) instead of your actual items, since it's not meant to be visible haha.
I've been a pretty heavy OneNote user- the WP8 app is not the full desktop app by any means, but it's better than what you get on Android or iOS. The local file manager issue is valid-- WP8 does not expose the file system in the interest of simplicity, which does make things less flexible than, say, Windows Mobile. I use SkyDrive as a sort of local drive, since everything in WP8 can save there-- but if you have concerns with consumer cloud services (SkyDrive, Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, etc.) being subpoenable, etc., that's a valid concern.
There is some motion in that space, though-- I know of many law firms that have switched to Office 365 for Exchange/Sharepoint/etc. (which is a lot more data than just files in SkyDrive), since the uptime and security is actually better than what they had in-house (http://www.microsoftbusinesshub.com/Industries/Legal). That includes "SkyDrive Pro," the Sharepoint file store.
If I can suggest something, take a look at the Surface RT, with the Type Cover. You'll get a full-blown Windows experience, with local files, full-blown Office 2013 (minus x86 macros) with desktop OneNote, etc., and a great keyboard, but 10-hour battery life, in a 1.5 lb form factor. There's a TeamViewer app for WinRT, and you can access almost anything a full PC can (here on XDA, people have even ported x86 desktop apps and an x86 emulator). I generally carry the Surface + WP8 everywhere now-- phone for quick stuff and Surface for longer content.

U couldnt have data from ur clients on a cloud? Then u shouldnt use android
And if u want not to use Skydrive with Onenote u can also create Offline Word Documents and write down ur Meeting Information there.
And what exactly isnt working with One Note on PC and ur Phone?
But for what r u using dropbox? Isnt that a cloud too?
After u press a Letter in the Apps Menu the Alphabet is show so u can select the Letter u want ur App starts with.
For the Topbar u can always touch on the Clock to get the Whole Topbar shown with all Informations.

Androids bt stack is also incomplete. Most of the other things you mention are there. If its trully business usage you want then buy a WM device, not even your beloved android comes close to wm. The only thing wm doesn't do better is games and video playback and most of that is down to crap drivers from the oems

On the PC I have in One Note a personal and office section. The office section can only be seen with Sky Drive.Why not having both section direct in the Phones One Note without Sky Drive. Any suggestion? I guess it is possible but do not know to get it done. It seems Logitech will bring a compatible Keyboard for the Ativ,
Calendar, I use Week View 8 what does the most I need, but you cannot change there appointments or to dos, you have to go through agenda.. We have Office 365 and have until today nit made a final decision.A replacement for Team Viewer not found except you run it through Internet Explorer.I will always listen and learn and keep things in an appropriate way.

I like vnc better then teamviewer personally. Ive never had as problem with one note or outlook syncing. I also enjoy the android os on my tablet. Perhaps that might be a solution for you. I use my Aviv s to provide internet to my android tablet.

If there is one thing that WP does infinitely better than Android, that is protecting your privacy.
Hell, on android you can even get spyware and trojan downloaded from the marketplace, and you will never even know it. If you want privacy, go for WP and stick with it.

LOL.......it seems that 95% of WP apps require access to your location, and they send this also to Microsoft. Having access to my location is fine, as long as it makes sense.

cause yeh LOL google maps location process doesn't run like 100% if time in the background on ANY android phone.

Turn your old NST into an electric sign

While looking for something completely different, I stumbled across this and thought some people might find it interesting:

I wouldn't fixed NST to a wall and think that I have read here about app used here to do that job. Either someone is gonna fix TLS issue or maybe if we assume using NST as display it could be possible to use home Wi-Fi router or mobile phone as secure server or part of VPN that will negotiate TLS issue for NST. I always doubted slightly that NST can offer full internet browser experience but something in line of htttp web grab in reader mode might be good enough for some application. News (RSS), weather and I believe that maybe EPG TV guide are not impossible to accomplish. Only question about this remains will NST embedded HTML browser will be good for the job of showing the grab from web pages or is Opera in reader mode better for such job. Time to look up for a good web grabber...

Curl can often bypass SSL checks and grab web content. It runs on the NST. I've used it in a few of my apps. Whether the data it gets can be used by the app the blogger mentions is something else.

@nmyshkin that is nice idea! And seems exactly in line of what I wrote. I do not know is curl accessible from Android layer. I pondered the same thought more in line of trying to use port of Lynx to Android I have seen someone did although who knows is that possible to do on this version of Android?

I've written a status app (that I never use).
It polls two different servers for JSON info and displays it using regular Android graphics stuff.
It uses Retrofit for polling.

And one more! (although this one uses a Sony PRS-T1)

There's the whole let the Nook poll some data service and display it on a web browser sort of thing.
I don't really need or want that.
I was thinking more of like as a status output device for a headless Raspberry Pi.
No, not as a terminal, more like status for a solar/home/whatever system.
The Nook doesn't poll anything, it just sits there waiting for text or graphics.
But here's the part I like, you don't use any WiFi.
You just plug your Nook into the Raspberry Pi.
Of course it has adb.
You can get adb for Raspberry Pi: sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb
Now you can set up port forwarding:

Then all you need is something on the RPi to connect to port 6666 and spit out stuff.
On the Nook you need an app to serve port 6666 and do display stuff.
I've already made a clock as proof of concept and it works fine.
You could just use text fields or compose a whole graphic frame on the RPi and send that over.
Heck, if you send whole frames you wouldn't even need to run the Android subsytem.
I could probably get that working on a Kobo.
A very sophisticated example follows.
It allows you to individually update separate fields.
These could be in tables with borders or labels or whatever.

You know, the thing I like about this is that the NST is the server.
It's a bit like running X11, but much more lightweight.
And if you want you can still run this over WiFi instead of ADB forwarding.

This electric sign app is really close to something I'm looking for. What I'd like to do is, instead of a screenshot of a URI, to take a screenshot of what I've got open in the device.
I'd like to use this with Google Calendar, and Opera Mini surprisingly seems to work with the HTML version. I think Opera Mini keeps the calendar updating with AJAX or something, so all I'd need an app like this to do would be to, when it's running, take a screenshot of what's on the screen right before sleeping and set that as wallpaper, then wake every X minutes, screencap what's there and go back to sleep with that as the new wallpaper. The end result should be an always-on, low power Google Calendar.
EDIT: For anyone looking later, I was wrong. Opera Mini does not keep updating Google Calendar, you have to refresh it manually, which makes this slightly more complicated...

Somewhere on the site there is a discussion of a setup that copies the current screen into a screensaver folder so that, for example, a map remains visible when the device sleeps. Search for it.

For plain HTML stuff you could throw something together with Webkit instead.
For the adventurous you could use the Google Calendar API

I tend to agree with you. As I already wrote above something akin to Pocket/ReadItLater and similar might be accomplished using simple web grab I presume and offline HTML browser. I have thought that it looks odd that beside "hidden" (and sadly for us practically unusable) browser NST have another HTML viewer. Reason for that might be it was intended to be used for B&N "browsing" through their shop that they periodically download to NST or maybe for presentation of e-book material of older type that was for all intents and purposes just web archived HTML page or perhaps for viewing magazines purchased through B&N.
In essence even epub use elements of CSS/HTML but that is another story. Maybe it could be possible to make some poor man Pocket like offline browser if we somehow find the way to cobble together parts of some RSS, bookmarks syncing, e-mail listing, forum/blog viewer and approach that me or nmyshkin proposed here. In my opinion hardest part if some web grab is possible would be to render it in usable form for this device. That mean turning of ads, flash/video, loading pictures only on demand (or better in on/off way) and show only text information. Now what "browser" is suitable for this is yet to determine. I know that very old Opera could turn off animation an pictures but as I remember it did that in such way that it didn't download them at all to save bandwidth. Maybe it could be somehow set to load web archives in such manner? Think about it as giving an command that some web page be "printed as epub". It might be to large task to accomplish. Pocket worked if I remember right in such way that selected page was sent to dedicated server which did the trimming part for user and allowing him/her to download that content on other device to be read later on. Here I think that if we could sync for example one of bookmark folders from a computer with NST and achieve web grab of those links in usable form we might have something. It is a matter for the debate isn't Opera mobile and style management already wrote on here in forum same or even better. Problem would be that page reformat/rendering would be tasked to NST itself and I am not sure if it is up to the task or am I capable to cobble such thing alone for that matter. Something flashed in my mind didn't Calibre had some news reader? If it does then I am inventing the wheel here. Still it would be nice to be able to have some even limited ability to open a link to a news story from RSS feed or a forum/blog we follow or e-mail listing etc.
For Calendar I hope that some kind of dedicated app combining Calendar, planner and to do list can be found to already exist for this device.

Thanks for these! The ersatz Google News is amazing in that even the external links are text-only! It makes my Google News app obsolete! Great with Opera Mini. Many, many things to look at there

I am glad that I have contributed with something useful. As have already guessed from mine posts in this thread I have contemplated heavily about what could be more useful for NST some text-only browser akin to old trusty Lynx or some rewrite/redefinition of working Opera. One thing lead to another and at first I thought to maybe open and disclosed source for firefox readability extension/addon ported for working version of Opera somehow is a way to go but as I always check all aspects of mine quirky ideas I stumbled upon this. It is poor man solution but as I remembered that you follow NPR and they have text mode only site felt obliged to mention it here.

In line with nmyshkin's idea of using curl if some information display akin to the one linked in the first post is needed does something like cron from Linux can be run on NST?

"Print as epub" exist as web form. Here is the result of that one. https://dotepub.com/ I tried to use online form there and results were mediocre but as I understand they also offer their API to developers etc. That I presume might draw attention from someone on xda.

In defense of the intended idea for using NST as info screen arguably touch technology it uses is best for those screens. Mine guess is that its deemed as such because it is most easily scalable from the currently available techniques. This also raise the question why B&N did not already made readers of much larger format like A4 paper size screen. Is the display cost really that high and prohibitive? On the other news rumors have spread that they have partnered with Lenovo not only for the new generation of tablets but also for new e-readers. Has anyone find some leek about possible specifications?

I agree. Cheap bastards! I can't say is that 149DPI good for LCD screen but is sub par for e-reader. They obviously targeted minimum resolution comparable to low resolution printing and hope to get away with it. Considered that I expressed criticism to level of development of current color e-ink technology being bellow resolution of NST by about 60% you can bet I find this to little question is does it comes to late for B&N. Still I am more interested about e-ink display device that rumor say is also planned but nothing is revealed so far.
