Hi Everyone,
I am looking for tablet advice. I am a high school math teacher who teaches using SMARTboards. If you've never heard of this, it's basically a giant white board that is also a touchscreen (picture a 6 foot tablet mounted to the wall). It mirrors the PC in my classroom (via a projector mounted on the ceiling), and allows lots of fun interactive opportunities with my students. However, I am stuck at the front of the room with my back to my kids a lot. I want to change all that, so I want to buy a tablet to control the PC (which in turn controls the SMARTboard).
What I am seeking requires a tablet that could take over a Windows XP PC (wirelessly I assume - we do have WiFi access). Any suggestion on good apps for remote access would be appreciated here, but also I want to know this - would this system seem to be a good one with the Nexus 7?
Do you guys think the screen is large enough for this sort of application (solving math problems with a stylus, and this would be projected onto a large screen for my kids to see)? Or would you think a 10" screen would be better?
Also, would this idea work, technologically? WiFi access of PC... this should allow writing on the tablet to write on the PC... SMARTboard would then show what I'm writing since it is a clone of the PC screen... I just need to make sure that I can easily control programs remotely from the tablet.
I know this may sound like a mess, but I really want to do my homework before spending money I don't otherwise NEED to spend. My smartphone (EVO 4G LTE) does all I need right now, but this would be a toy that I can also use daily for work. Thanks for any input you guys have! Feel free to ask questions if what I said didn't make perfect sense. I just know that XDA is the place to go for tech questions, and this is an awesome community.

Splashtop 2 is really good, works great with my computer.
A 7in screen should be fine if the app in question can zoom, or you dont mind less space.
I notice that with my remote desktop it doesnt matter if im zoomed in unless i try to name a file, or if im using photoshop to paint.

I would imagine the smartboard uses its own software, could you list the boards make/model? We might be able to help out a bit more. Otherwise you'll just be connecting your tablet to your computer via remote desktop and then using it to control your smartboard. I would imagine you would definitly lose some functionality that way and it would be hard to control with the small screen.
I would suggest either getting a netbook or small laptop and just face the class using it or get a stool to set it on, or to go to the google play store online and see if your smartboard has an app.

I have done this actually
I love my nexus but i do NOT think its big enough..
when my arm was in a sling from surgery for over 5 months.. I would use SPLASH TOP .
My tablet was a 10 inch Acer a500 tablet connected thru my netgear wifi router in close proximity . to my Wired connection on the same router. With HDMI MIRROR to 42 INCH HD TV.. i used handwriting and photo shop on the tv screen . i think the 10 inch tablet was ok but the hand writing is hard because of the size of the screen on the tablet Drawing something say the 3 inches tall 1 letter on the tablet will show up as 4 feet tall on that display ..
Your software could have some zoom features in it to correct this. Other wise it would be difficult to make it work... its hard for my to explain the issue .
very doable if your program on the computer can overcome the zoom issue.. i THINK This is what the post above mine was saying..

+1 for Splashtop, but I would imagine there is some sort of Smartboard app specifically for Android devices. If there is such an app, that would probably be your best bet, but I don't know.
Splashtop on the other hand was the smoothest remote control software I've used. It's free as well (as long as your using it on a local network).

if there is a app for the smart board then a 7 in tablet will likely work .. the issue is the resolution and more so pixel density .. If the app will let you project say 1-4 ratio or what ever you need to make it work and resize then you could have a winner...
we use something similar to that smart board at work for blue prints..
ohh and +1 more for splash top Its best and i have tried them all.. the issue could lie in the speed and network ability of the xp pc
Unfortunately there is no SmartBoard app yet. Apple is getting one this fall, and Android MAY in the future. As for now, u can't bank on that.
I'm thinking the Samsung Tab 2 10.1 would be a good choice. Or maybe I should look into Windows Tablets... Hmm.

I cosign those who said Splashtop and for a tablet, I would recommend a Transformer over the Galaxy Tab.

If you can wait till october- November I suggest you look into windows 8 tablet/PC which could do all of your computer functions with pen input and run all your computer applications.
I have a friend who is also an elementary school teacher and I recommended this device to her as she is also using the smartboard. I haven't used it myself but I think the size of screen is good for it unless you also already have a 10 inch tablet. But to each is own I know I write extremely small and she is more of a bubbly letter kind of gal so I can fit write more you could say.

I checked out tablets at Fry's Electronics today... 7" is definitely too small for this application.
Does anyone else have issues with accuracy of the styli out there today? I tried a few tablets and a few styli... I couldn't write an equation to save my life! It kept not reading it or appearing slightly above or below where I wanted. Then I tried the S pen on the Sammy Note 10.1... It was incredible! It was like writing on paper with a pencil! I don't wanna spend that much, but man that thing was incredible... I think that's what I may need.
Thanks for all of the help guys! Any other tips are still appreciated but I'm pretty sure I won't be a Nexus 7 owner...

One thing that a teacher had was a Mobi mobile interactive whiteboard. It is a thing that hooks up to your computer and is exactly what you are looking for. Also they have clickers with a program that yo ask questions and they key in the answer and you can see who is right/Wong and what answer they had. Hope I helped!

So since I got my TF300 I have been neglecting my laptop. It has been sitting in a corner randomly downloading torrents, and just well sitting there. The Tegra 3 processor has introduced me to the wonderful world of tablet gaming and I have been quite involved. But then came Windows 8 and me just wanting to check it out as I had heard so many mixed reviews.
Now having gotten used to the touch screen of my TF300T with keyboard dock trying to go back to my laptop by using a mouse and standard keyboard I found myself pounding on a worthless LCD screen. This frustrated me to no end until I remembered that Splashtop remote 2 APP I had downloaded in that past that was pretty lame when operating a pc using Windows 7. Dont get me wrong my operating system of choice is Fedora Linux, but there are many things at work with require Windows use so my PC is set to duel boot.
So I downloaded the Splashtop streamer to my PC and dusted off that silly app and poof suddenly my laptop not so lonely anymore. It was like having android and Windows 8 on the same tablet. The Splashtop remote works perfectly with the Windows 8 start screen and even the tradition desktop. the ability to bring a keyboard up on the windows screen that can be used via the touch screen on my tablet is awesome. It also gives you a pretty good idea how a Windows 8 tablet like surface will work. (not that I would ever stray I love my Android devices)
Now I have yet to test the Splashtop outside my own network yet to see how the functionality is across my tablet via my tethered 4G Samsung Infuse with yee ole TF300 but will update when I do. Within myy home wireless it is a seamless connection and real time functionality. So if your someone who must use a Windows based laptop for any reason and can update to Windows 8, have a TF300Tand are willing to download Splashtop remote you may find yourself quite pleased with combination. With the latest updates that for sure. Its literally like im using a surface for better natural touch windows 8 gesture support. And also the mouse feature is cool too. I was going to buy a surface nut now. Ill just buy a hard copy windows 8 pro.

I'm on windows 7 and I have a HP Desktop with 8 ram and 1TB of storage space. I used my TF300T to connect to my computer remotely using splashtop all the time. When I'm at home or out on the go. Connection is best at home but if the wi-fi strength his strong, it works fine away from home too.
It works very well and using touch or the trackpad to use options isn't a problem for me. But since windows 8 was built for touch I was wondering what that would be like. I'll have to see if I can find a friend who has windows 8. Got my roomate a TF300T on black friday instead of ASUS windows 8 tablet because of the limited functionality of windows 8 rt.
Wise choice i was going to buy rtm surface but too limited. But if you want win 8 you should upgrade now is only $39 limited time offer.

For a long time, I used splashtop with windows 7 and the dock, and all was wonderful. the only things i ever missed were the esc and windows keys. I had the day off today and decided I would install windows 8. Initially (and against my usual judgement and moral decency) I considered pirating it, but their pricing scheme is very generous. I bought a laptop this year, and they offer a promo if it didn't come with windows 8. That being said, I couldn't remember the brand, or model type, but they gave me an upgrade from 7 to 8 for sixteen dollars (look up windows 8 promo code if you also bought something in the last year but don't know a single detail about it).
The upgrade process went very smoothy for me, which is rare for a MS product. After using it for a bit, I am not terribly wowed when using it from the desktop (they could allow us to enable the start key if we want it etc), but it is nice from my tf300t using splashtop. Native touch didn't work at first, so I uninstalled Splashtop Streamer on the PC and then reinstalled it, and that fixed all problems. It's fantastic from my tf, and honestly, that's mostly how my lazy ass has been accessing my desktop lately. I still miss the start and esc keys, but with updates I see this as a fantastic alternative to a w8 tablet or port. It feels native. I will update the more I use it, but as of now, if you're using your comp primarily from a tablet, it's worth looking in to. If you access it locally, prepare for a bit of a bumpy ride. I can see learning the system might vastly improve the experience, but mouse gestures and other issues will certainly annoy power users.

No problem. There's also a cool feature but doesn't support win 8 yet. It blacks out the desktop so the screen only shows on the tablet. This is handy cuz my touch smart doesn't have a tv out. So i use my tablet. But so many screens on are annoying. i cant wait till its supported. Another thing is to set desktop to never sleep so you can access it from anywhere. Which is good to activate cam to see what kids or babysitter is up to.

If you hit arrow on bottom right hives you option to activate mouse. To disable it Same. Also there's a app or something to enable it Google it I'm sure you'll find it google has everything

Dell Venue 8 Pro is $229 now at Walmart. I so appreciate the roms here but sometimes wonder if Android is too limited.
I hate Windows 8 and avoid it on my desktop. I run win 7.
Sometimes websites just dont work well on android and flash is always a problem.
Would you return your Nexus 7 2013 for an even exchange of a Dell Venue 8 Pro?

No. The resolution is too low, 8" is slightly too large for most of my pockets and I don't miss Windows 8 applications while I'm on the go. I have an 11.6" 2in1 convertible tablet with a digitizer for my work related stuff and my Nexus 7 is purely for entertainment and consumption. For that, Android is well enough and the pros it has far outweigh the cons for me.
Now, if the Dell had HDMI/DP output, full sized USB ports, a normal SD slot or at least a 128GB SSD and a digitizer with a quad core Kabini, that might have swayed me.

8" is too small to run windows in a desktop environment. I can hardly find my way around with big fingers. so then you need apps to make the tablet usable but then you remember win8 apps are non existent.
I agree with all - 8 inch is way too small for real Windows desktop. Android is perfect for 7, 8 inch tablets.
Also, media consumption isn't where it should be on windows tablets, yet.

the Dell seem to be a nice tablet but 32gig is not enough for window 8.
for now I stick with window 7 on a old netbook and my n7.

What are you talking about? Windows doesn't lack media options at all. In fact, it's one of the few platforms that can play basically everything. Even 1080p 10 bit h264 plays without dropped frames on a Dell Venue 8 Pro.
I have a Venue 8 Pro I'm playing with now, and I'm so tempted to switch at times. Metro performance is way ahead of any Android device in scrolling and loading. Metro IE is actually amazing fast and Chrome on desktop is about Chrome on Android. And despite running a full desktop and apps, it seems to keep programs in memory longer.
Unfortunately, while Metro app performance is really good, it's still seriously lacking in basic apps. There's basically 1 choice for IM outside of Skype. Only Metro apps have connected standby and get notifications when the tablet is asleep, so it's a major drawback. The virtual keyboard also doesn't seem to do any autocorrect on desktop, making typing a major pain.
I'm really torn. The 2 problems I have with it are major problems for me, but on the other hand, there's the performance and the ability to run basically any old program.
There's also a 64 GB version and microSD, so storage isn't that much of an issue.
No way. I'd get one of the Galaxy tabs. If only for the reason that the Windows devices don't have much market penetration, and they are not at least semi open source like Android. Fragmentation has become less of an issue in my opinion as Android matures.
I just read an article yesterday that Windows 8 use dropped, just a tiny amount, while Windows 7 went up a bit.
Windows tablets will be like the Windows media players. While working well enough for purple who prefer them, their numbers will plateau at a fairly low percentage while the numbers for Android/iDevices will go up. To me that matters.
And I like Android, a lot.

I think it depends on what you want to use that tablet for. I agree with the others that the screen is too small for it to really be a productivity tablet, so then its more for consumables and I'd pick the higher resolution of the 7.

Where is it for 229.00 I see it in Wal-Mart for 269.00
I actually did the total opposite! I bought the Dell Venue Pro 8 and after a few days, returned it and picked up a N7, and I am very glad I did. The v8p is a very nice device, however I found that I prefer Android...and if one is using android then the N7 is boss!

In case anyone hasn't noticed, Dell Venue 8 Pro will be on sale next Monday morning(Dec 9) for $99 at Microsoft Stores.
Just get both.

I have to say after picking up the HP Omni 10 Win8.1 tablet, I've grown to prefer it over Android. I can actually watch any movie files and things just work and not in a limited way. Everything is smooth and no crashes...yet but it's still windows after all. Still have the N7FHD of course for app games and such.

I have the venue 8pro. And a Nexus 7 2013.
Market penetration means nothing when it comes to personal use and functionality.
They are totally different devices.
Windows 8 isn't the best tablet os, but it's great if you want a portable device to do Microsoft work.
For regular use I prefer the Nexus because Android allows me to install
3rd party keyboards and I've grown accustomed to using SwiftKey. So for the Windows 8 tab my opinion is that the keyboard needs vast improvement if you're gonna use it like an android tab.
Speed wise venue 8 pro is not bad. I recommend getting the 64gb version cause 32 fills up fast!

I honestly see using an 10" iPad or Android Tab for normal use, and remote desktop into a Windows 8 PC for business.
I do this now and its great. 1 PC at the office and I can manipulate my files and email them out all from my couch or hotel room. Sure its not going to allow graphic artistry or anything crazy, but Office and Email is perfect. I can operate our ticketing application with ease.
With this method you get the best of both. A solid mobile OS with tons of development and entertainment, and Remote Desktop for work stuff.
You can't remote desktop into an Android or iOS device.

i have the 32gb version.
I bought it for the wacom digitizer and office student, in particular onenote, that together are my idealistic perfect tool for my student activities.
Straight out of the box i had a problem with the Windows Store, i couldn't install any app because every time i clicked on the install button the download didn't started and the app was going to Pending state.
After an afternoon on official Microsoft forum that suggested ton of fixes , and none of them worked, i solved the problem following this youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2vnhcoKCeQ

I got the 64GB version. Can't say I've had any issues. Put a 64GB micro SD in, and redirected most the libraries, Skydrive to point at it. I've got my steam games split between internal and the SD card.
I picked up one of the I-Blason Case and screen protectors off amazon. The case works nice, the top cover can fold over doesn't get in the way much at all.
Haven't had any issues with the MS store on mine, was able to purchase and install the plex app no problem as well as a e-reader app and a couple others.
The only thing I've noticed with mine is that the stylus isn't terribly accurate around the edges. It makes trying to grab some of the slider bars in IE and other programs a challenge. I've seen some of the calibration guides here and have been debating trying one of them to see if it would improve that.
Edit: I also tried Bluestack for getting some android apps running, but it's been pretty abysmal performance with it with some apps not launching at all, and others I can launch, but then they just don't work correctly. My high hopes for using it with this table have pretty much been trashed
Can you post a screen snip of Disk Management (from Win+X menu)? I'd like to see the storage layout.
Also, please post the Windows experience index. It's hidden in 8.x. Run 'winsat prepop' from CMD. Wait to finish, then run 'get-wmiobject -class win32_winsat' in PowerShell. Actually, just post the scores of all the components. TIA.
Note 8 was out in UK/EU a month ago, so info & reviews are already on Youtube. It improves upon DVP8 w/ good stylus support, but is also more expensive, now that DVP8 has hit $200 bargain bin. OTOH, by virtue of being first (and heavily discounted), DVP8 has garnered a decent-sized userbase.
Asus Note 8 + DVP8 + Lenovo ThinkPad 8 & Miix 2 8 + Acer W4 + Toshiba Encore round out the Win tab 8" crop. Here's my Cliff Notes comparison: DVP8 = cheap, Note 8 = stylus, W4/Encore = HDMI out, TP8 = 1080p res.
For me, stylus support is critical, not for note-taking, but for running desktop. But I'm also looking for more ports, and these don't have them. Cherry Trail is on tap for Computex, and should roll out in fall, so Bay Trail will slot into the low-end in a few months. Win 8.1 won't change, but hopefully the hardware will have better capability at lower price points. At $300'ish, they can't compete against iPad Mini, hence the $250 goal w/ cheaper Win license and 16GB SKU.
As they are I think it's a good first effort. If MS can swallow its pride and allow good desktop use--eg w/ integrated pointer in bezel or stylus--I think Win tabs can do well. Because Metro for now isn't enough to win (excuse the pun), and chubby fingers don't work for desktop.
Since MS' Surface line is intended to be hero devices, a good question is whether MS will come out with a Surface Mini to spearhead the mini-tab effort--and if it does, whether it'll sport the comatose RT (in hopes of a Hail Mary miracle), or with an Atom, competing directly against its OEM partners.

I picked up one of the I-Blason Case and screen protectors off amazon. The case works nice, the top cover can fold over doesn't get in the way much at all.
Haven't had any issues with the MS store on mine, was able to purchase and install the plex app no problem as well as a e-reader app and a couple others.
The only thing I've noticed with mine is that the stylus isn't terribly accurate around the edges. It makes trying to grab some of the slider bars in IE and other programs a challenge. I've seen some of the calibration guides here and have been debating trying one of them to see if it would improve that.
Edit: I also tried Bluestack for getting some android apps running, but it's been pretty abysmal performance with it with some apps not launching at all, and others I can launch, but then they just don't work correctly. My high hopes for using it with this table have pretty much been trashed

Could you tell me how to get skydrive to point to the SD card only? Also what libraries were you successfully able to direct to SD? I attempted to re-direct temp files and app data but that ended catastrophically with all things in metro including system restore settings disappeared, and would not even come back after returning things to normal. Had to do a full system recovery with a keyboard plugged in to force it to restore mode.

Moving SkyDrive is pretty easy, just open explorer on the desktop right click and go to properties. There's a tab called location where you can set where its local files are stored.
The other thing I relocated were Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, Downloads.
I haven't see too many people try to move the apps folder though, but symlinks would possibly be your best try, though I have no idea if that would work or not.
I've only had mine for a couple of weeks but I already enjoy it way more then any of the android tablets I have. The lack of apps is discouraging at times but I've always been able to find a desktop alternative and enjoy a better gaming experience playing my steam games.
I agree that all the current 8" tablets leave a little to be desired. To me it came down between this one and the TP8. The hdmi out and 1080 sounded nice, but I really didn't see myself using it very often, I have a htpc hooked up to the TV already as well as a laptop, and a the 1080 would work great over hdmi, but I figured it would actually hurt the desktop experience when using the 8" screen. The Wacom on the note 8 pretty much sealed it as this was mostly for on the go use.
The one item I would really wish for is a dedicated charging port and separate USB port so you can use USB and charge at the same time. I dont see that happening as I think Intel and the OEMs are purposefully neutering their designs specifically so they can't be used as a cheap desktop replacement via hdmi and a USB hub and possibly cut into the sales of their more expensive models.

A better explanation is that it was cheaper to go the single-port route, since getting to the $300 mark is the paramount consideration for Win tabs. Even so, they're still too expensive to be competitive, as evidenced by DVP8's drastic discounting. This won't change with $250 as the goal for upcoming gen. The next crop will be as barebone as the present one.
Vendors won't be motivated to invest much in their products, with no improvement in Win until next year. Low pricing will be key, and most vendors will be content to use Intel's reference design with little differentiation, as was for this gen. The good news is that we'll see $200 Win tabs by year end. If MS & vendors can get desktop to be functional (read: cheap stylus support), they'll have a compelling pitch against the sea of Androids.

Even with a non magnetic case, there are the two magnets of the speakers, so near the asus logo and front camera there will always be some distortion I believe.

I got one of the i-Blason cases off amazon, it has magnet on the right side of the case, and one in the left most flap on the edge for folding over the cover (other i-Blason cases have up to 5 on them). I haven't really seen any issues using this case with the stylus. My experience has been that the accuracy drops some close to the edge of the screen, but this happens with and without the case, so I don't think i'm getting any distortion from the magnets on the case.

Is it possible to hold Network and for example an audio stream when Tablet is in Standby (Energysave) whatever....screen off???
I can't find a way to do so....screen off....everything stops...hm. No further Options in Energyplan Menu....

Open an elevated command prompt, and run 'powercfg /a' to see if Connected Standby is available as one of the sleep states (it should). Then, run 'powercfg /sleepstudy' to track battery drain. More info here,

If CS is available, then go into Device Manager | Network adapters, check Advanced tab to see if there's an option to keep connection alive during sleep (this should have been par for CS).
It could well be that drivers are still buggy, which would be kind of normal for these, being the first-run models. DVP8 had bunch of problems with CS.

Has anyone found a USB keyboard that works while booting? I'm specifically trying to go into safe mode so I can add hibernation to the power options, however when getting to the advanced boot section, none of my keyboards seem to recognize. They work fine in normal OS mode.
Think it may be a power issue or something similar?

I'm really liking this tablet. The screen size is just right and having full desktop experience when I need it is helpful.
The only thing that I'm missing is double tap to wake. I do not like the button placement for power/windows key and find it awkward and stiff to wake up...

Double tap to wake would be awesome... but i doubt we will see something like that on windows tablet

Stylus question
I just got my new AVTN8 yesterday and was hoping that the stylus would make it easier to use (I bought and returned the Toshiba Encore a few months ago) but I guess that I was spoiled by the Samsung S Pen.
Is there another compatible stylus out there that has some of that kind of functionality? I tend to take a lot of screenshots while researching various topics, so that would be my main usage.

Main thing im after's the stylus, samsung seems ahead here as i dont think the vivo has that many stylus based apps looking for input here my work s mostly writing , no fancy graphs or diagrams , just text
Again handling is a factor and it seems the vivos thinner and lighter
Im not familiar with the windows environment your input will be appreciated guys

Beyond both being 8" tablets with a wacom digitiser (the fancy schmancy stylus, samsung call it an S-Pen but it is just rebranded wacom gear) the 2 are almost entirely different.
The samsung galaxy note uses a Samsung Enoxys processor with the ARM instruction set running android. The vivotab note 8 is using an intel atom baytrail processor which uses the x86 instruction set and runs *full* windows 8.
Most phones and tablets do use ARM processors. Nothing unusual on that front for the galaxy note.
x86 processors are what you would tend to find in your laptop or desktop computer. The vivotab note is more or less a low end laptop ripped apart and put inside a tablet casing. It is just a normal windows 8 computer which just happens to have an 8" touchscreen on the front.
I'd say of the 2, the vivotab is the more powerful device, but windows doesnt quite have the full touch ecosystem available yet. It will do everything you want though, onenote is meant to be excellent with a stylus and for media playback you can get VLC on the windows store as a full touchscreen app or simply use iTunes or the full blown version of VLC or whatever other media software you have preferred on windows on the desktop interface. It also comes with microsoft office preinstalled for free, not just a trial version.
pros for the samsung would be that android from day 1 has always been touch based so all the apps in the ecosystem are of course touch based usually. S-Pen integration is good. Handwriting accuracy wont be very different from the vivotab particularly but you do get samsungs very good S-Note application.
Alot of computing stores have surface pro demo models on display, this also has the wacom pen so usage wise the vivotab and surface pro will be very similar except for the pro having a more powerful processor (for your needs, baytrail is fine) and bigger screen, see how you like windows 8 on a touch screen and go from there. You may have to ask staff for access to the pen, or if you own a samsung S-Pen device already the pen from that *should* work.

Yes I did get it mate and for the price its really good, it can handle casual games well and browsing is very good but on a 7 inch screen you tap the wrong think now and then but I'm used to it as I use my nexus 7 a lot, s I think its a great way to try windows 8.1 on a tablet and it didn't disappoint me

This tablet isn't windows RT. It's full blown windows 8.1. But, I am quite disappointed at how windows 8.1 is on this tablet.. All the text and buttons are so small it's so hard to use. I have a kindle fire hdx with google launcher installed and it is a much more practical device for 7in touch screen. Windows 10 better have a more appropriate design for touch screens.. Otherwise, things arent' gonna look good for MSFT.

I just won one and tested quickly and you need a keyboard and mouse to really take advantage of it. i think is great to have full office running on it or whatever app you want.
