[Q] Adapting Samsung Galaxy(s) into simulated laptop - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking for a way to connect my Galaxy (currently the s4) to any monitor I may come across. Easy enough, use an MHL adapter. Here's the fun: I want to connect a keyboard and external memory at the same time, and to keep those from draining the battery I need a way to charge it while doing all this. By the numbers, what I'm looking for is a male MicroUSB that is split into 2 female MicroUSB's and one regular USB, or a single male micro to 2 female micros (could use a Bluetooth keyboard). I'm not sure if those exist or are even possible. Could someone point me toward the right forum for answering these questions? Has anyone tried it themselves? Many thanks, all around.

Hi there,
Please wait until mods will move this thread to the device specific forum for more relevant answers.

Enable webtop without dock?

Anyone figure out how to get webtop to work on an LCD monitor without the dock? My dock didnt ship yet and I want to test it out...
Thanks.
if it won't give you a prompt when an HDMI cable is connected, then i'm betting that they are telling the phone it's in the dock with a certain resistance on the USB connector. many manufacturers do this to allow devices to know when it's connected to an official accessory or not. For instance, my contourHD helmet cam will charge and record at the same time only if the official usb charger is used. If you use any other one it just charges and refuses to record. there is some talk of it in the USB wiki page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus
If someone could figure out the resistance value on an official dock (assuming this is in fact how it's done) you could wire up your own USB cable to trick the phone into thinking it's in a dock.
that's my only idea at the moment.
Figured maybe it was a magnetic trip... couldnt find anything :\
I stopped by Best Buy/Radio Shack after work today to try and find a 'USB 2.0 A to Micro B Female / Male Adaptor' (google it, it's my first reply so I could not post the link).
I was going to try and use my existing laptop dock so I could have additional USB inputs to connect the USB/Mouse, and then use the HDMI cable that came with the phone to plug into my monitor.
Is this something that most likely will not work, because of the reasons stated above?

Don't buy it just yet.
In the Dev section, they're working on allowing the Webtop to be accessible sans dock.

D.i.y usb otg adapter/cable

Hi,
I made my own usb otg adapter from a plain usb a to micro b adapter. You have to connect pin 4 /which is not connected/ to ground to fire up host mode.
Edit: It is not easy to dismantle a usb connector or adapter and it requires soldering. So I guess anybody with the necessary skills will find the pin on his own. I will not post photos because my solution is far from being pretty.
For everybody else: the nokia USB OTG cable is wired the same way so it is very likely that it will work. (on Hungarian forums I saw references that it works, but I can not guaratee it.)
Tommorow I will go buy one and report.
USB Host mode will allow to connect USB pendrive, mouse, keyboard etc. to the SGS II.

this is very useful for people like me who knows how to solder things, but for the people who have absolutly no Idea what you are talking about, you should add more details/pictures to the OP so the people who doesen't know much about electronics know what you are talking about, and what benefits it brings for them.
I myself will probably make one or more, so I don't have to always take my USB OTG with me all the time.

OTG Cable USB (B) to Micro USB (A) Powered with AAA batteries
As one knows, Samsung has promised a HMI Cable
You noticed it is not only a cable but a box out of which you may plug in an extra power supply.
The obvious reason is if the passive monitor does not furnish 5V, the phone will rapidly be out of power.
Now you know that to obtain video rather than anything less, Pin 4 (sense) and 5 (Ground) of micro USB (male A) must be connected with a 365K resistance.
I suppose the dock Samsung is selling for I9100 (yes, I have it) is grounded at 1000K as it provides audio with remote, and yes, the dock provides power supply via extra micro USB as well.
I come to my point: If I want to access any USB data On the Go, I need a cable OTG with 2 ports: USB 2.0/3.0 (female, B sided) to a micro USB (male, A sided, grounded but with no resistance = 0K). Many of them exist on the market out there.
But it is quite impossible to use because of lack of power supply in the passive device (let’s say a handy 1T HDD usually powered via Host connexion !
Would it be possible to insert some sort of receptacle for AAA battery in the middle of such a cable to provide for power while you are for a long time out of access to an electric plug ? Does such a cable exist somewhere to buy ? What would be the sheme to mount this ? HELP !
Instead of shorting pin 4 and 5 from within the cable head, would it also be viable to short them from within the device itself? Say if I disassembled the phone to access the back of the female usb micro connector and soldered the pins. Would there be any damage caused if the permanently shorted pins 4 and 5 (within the device) is connected to a charging adapter/PC?

Pimping Out Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 - USB host & cam questions

Hello everyone.
I am currently modding Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 for car instalation and everything seems to be great except I have problems with two things:
1) As the tab will be also my main music player I would need an USB host from time to time (check: http://www.expansys.si/samsung-usb-adapter-for-galaxy-tab-series-no-30-pin-to-sd-slot-229630/ ). It would be hard to switch that adapter with power supply just for the time I need to stick USB in it so I am asking if anyone knows if it is possible to have both active at the same time: power supply and USB host? Or if anyone has some other interesting idea how to transfer data to tablet asap from time to time? Please note that it will be really hard to reach it when installed.
2) Since the tab has back camera (which is useless to me in cars interior) i was thinking if there is any possible way to get that camera out of the tab with some extender or something? I've been looking at the interior of a tablet and the camera doesnt look to be attach in any other way than just a flat cable. Any ideas?
Thank you guys for your help in advance!
Make love, not war <3

It sound like this will be a permanent installation.
Instead of €22 for an adapter, I'd rather use a breakout and hardwire:
http://www.kineteka.com/galaxy-tab-connector.aspx
This will also allow you to wire the earphone output also.
Yes, with many devices you can charge and do host mode at the same time.
It's mostly a question of convincing your device to play nicely with a non-standard operation.
You can just bring out the USB leads or hardwire in a hub for more options, like a keyboard.
I'd use a DC converter circuit board hardwired instead of a cigarette lighter adaptor.
Something like this, maybe: http://www.lightobject.com/LM2576-High-Input-7V40V-Switching-5V-Power-Module-Regulator-P549.aspx
I think somewhere in the Tab 10.1 forums, someone figured out the proper wiring for a powered USB host adapter. 90% certain that would also work on Tab 2 7.0

[Q] run music on nook simple touch

hello guys , i know u can play music on nook simple touch ..... but i am asking about if i can use Samsung galaxy s3 headphone and connect to my nook .... it will run on it ....and if not .... what pins i must modified
i just want put direct headphone .... no usb jacks
thx
Sorry, you'd need an audio interface on USB somehow.
Maybe you could hack it internally but it would be a headache in one way or another.
The system-on-a-chip does support an interface to audio chips but you'd have to do a lot of work to get that going.

The micro USB connector is used for a lot of things.
The five pins on it can be used for unrelated things if the hardware behind them supports them.
The options are
USB
CarKit (analog audio in and out)
MHL (HDMI-like video interface)
UART (logic level serial port for debugging)
Unfortunately, on the Nook we just have USB.

You need an USB OTG adapter cable (brand, model not important, but it must say "OTG").
Something like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23683542&postcount=139
You need a USB audio adapter, something like this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001KT80IO/
Then you need to read the whole thread from the first link.

i found this otg cable on online store in egypt ........ have alook if that the correct cable . i will buy it easly
http://egypt.souq.com/eg-en/micro-usb-otg-host-cable-for-samsung-and-htc-3995639/i/
That looks good.
Unfortunately I don't have any Egyptian pounds on me.
Consider if you have the option whether to get a right angle cable.
I find those easier, although it's hard to see from a photo
if it goes left or right out of the socket.
I have a couple that I bought that go down when the Nook is in landscape mode.
UMMMMMMM,......... lol...... just gimme links to the right cable with suitable handfree and i will go to virgin store or compu me ..... or try ask in electronics markt ........ anyway ...... i wont go buy anything till my exams finished ...mmmm thx for.ur great efforts ..
BEST regards

Would it be possible, with some software modification in NST, to use something like this1, instead of a huge USB audio adapter?
or this2 or this3? Or best of all, can I simply use microUSB headset? like this
Nope, those adaptors will not work.
They are all just mechanical adaptors with no active electronics in them.
A micro USB connector is often used for multiple things, USB, MPL, UART, analog audio.
Inside the device these things must be supported.
Motorola handies often allow the sending of analog audio through the micro USB connector.
You only need a mechanical adaptor to be able to plug in headphones.
The Nook has no audio hardware inside.
You need an actual USB audio adapter.

Thanks mademoiselle Renate!
My ideal plan: dig into NST and hide the good microUSB/USB sound adapter inside the Nook case. and just leave the microUSB cable outside. Do you think this is possible or just a childish dream?
Better: is it possible to extend 1 microUSB to multiple? like an extender. Any consequence on battery use?
You could connect a USB device inside a Nook.
For any audio adapter it would be best to just put in a separate headphone jack.
The problem comes when you want to use the Nook as a peripheral.
If you use an internal hub then everything has to switch direction.
It all gets complicated.
Hubs are kind of power hogs since they are usually on wall powered devices.
Since the OMAP3621 is designed for an audio interface, that would be a challenge but would use less power than a USB solution.

Adding internal full size USB port to Samsung Galaxy 10.1" tablets DIY project

Correct me if I am mistaken but the Keyboard docks for Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, Tab 2 10.1 and Note 10.1 all provide keyboard and charging at the same time (and also audio out).
Well, This proves that charging and USB on the go can be made in a single device.
I was thinking in something a little more bold: integrating a full size USB port inside the tablet itself and a microUSB port just for charging with a conventional Android USB cable as the one that comes with my Galaxy S3 (but using the tablet charger, of course, due to the higher Amps).
I plan to make all the modifications inside the tablet and soldering the to the 30 pin port internally.
It sounds crazy but I think it could be done.
My only concern is about USB syncing with the computer. So I guess I should add a switch somewhere to change from USB host (pendrive, keyboard, etc) to USB slave (syncing with computer).
Also, it would be great too if when set in USB slave mode the added microUSB port could serve as syncing port (yeah, I don't like the docking port. It is good for docking, bad for everything else)
My previous tablet was an Acer Iconia Tab A500. It had plenty of interfacing options: a full size host USB, a syncing microUSB, a round two pins charging connector similar to the old nokia ones (allowing charging and using USB pendrive at the same time) and microHDMI out apart from a docking port and audio jack. The only thing I miss from this tablet is its connectivity
Any ideas, comments, suggestions?
Hi, dear friend!
don't you think it will make difficulties with the Tablet's slim design?
I'm interested in this... if you think you can do it, then I may help you do it...

Indeed. Nobody said it would be easy, but my Acer Iconia A500 had a full size USB port and it was no thicker than the Galaxy. I think it is a matter of finding the appropriate empty space. Of course, maybe there is not such space to allow the project to become true. I will open the tablet this weekend and then we will see.
In the meanwhile, if anybody has good reference of the 30 pin port, resistance values needed to activate USB OTG and HDMI and if it is possible to have both running at the same time, it would be great.
Have you read this thread:

In the first post, there are two images of the connections in the 30-pin cable...
I don't remember though... I have read it many months ago...
