Anyone figure out how to get webtop to work on an LCD monitor without the dock? My dock didnt ship yet and I want to test it out...

if it won't give you a prompt when an HDMI cable is connected, then i'm betting that they are telling the phone it's in the dock with a certain resistance on the USB connector. many manufacturers do this to allow devices to know when it's connected to an official accessory or not. For instance, my contourHD helmet cam will charge and record at the same time only if the official usb charger is used. If you use any other one it just charges and refuses to record. there is some talk of it in the USB wiki page

If someone could figure out the resistance value on an official dock (assuming this is in fact how it's done) you could wire up your own USB cable to trick the phone into thinking it's in a dock.
that's my only idea at the moment.

I stopped by Best Buy/Radio Shack after work today to try and find a 'USB 2.0 A to Micro B Female / Male Adaptor' (google it, it's my first reply so I could not post the link).
I was going to try and use my existing laptop dock so I could have additional USB inputs to connect the USB/Mouse, and then use the HDMI cable that came with the phone to plug into my monitor.
Is this something that most likely will not work, because of the reasons stated above?

Don't buy it just yet.
In the Dev section, they're working on allowing the Webtop to be accessible sans dock.

This may seem like a really stupid question, but has anyone tried/succeeded in seeing if this device can charge off USB? That is really the only thing I dislike about it now that I have Dexter, I travel a lot and hauling an extra charger is just a pain.
What about charging thru the docking port if we had a usb cable to fit it?
im sure docking port would work, as it does work with folio100 as example.
but usb charge, is probably a no-go, i guess hardware needs to be redesigned to enable usb charging although kernel does allow you to enable it, but again, maybe a pin of the chip needs to attach to another location on board to enable it.
on folio100 it did not work.. and without kernel source to try changing/enabling it we dont know if it would work..
and remember the port is host/device based, so it might also be it only works when in device mode, which also means travellers would not be able to attach anything if they charge it.. so might be conflicting interests on how it should work. (if it worked)

I know I've seen this question asked elsewhere, but not for a while. You mentioned the docking port, have we seen ANYTHING that connects to it? even if not a full docking station, a cable to connect via USB to a computer.
Or has anyone figured out a pin map that someone could cobble together a cable
Got the idea a few days ago after looking at the full breakdown of the Xoom...
Here's the idea:
Remove the dock charge contact points, and install a micro switch in its place. With the switch in place, find the proper contact points for ground and the host-mode pin on the micro USB port. Solder some 30 AWG to the contact points on the board, then to the switch, and put everything back together.
This would give you the ability to use any USB cable as a host-mode cable, while only affecting charging on docking units. With the battery life of the Xoom, I don't see it as a deal breaker.

Well, I only charge on the dock. Way to convenient not to have. I don't trust the standard chargers design to withstand me..
However if you are not a dock user, then it sounds like it would be cool.
Just my opinion, but it seems like a lot of risk and effort for not having to carry around a cable. I mean if you have the standard cable, you still need a male to male adapter to use any usb device. So either way you still need something else besides the standard USB cable. I would rather just have a USB host cable that already has the correct USB ends on it and still be able to use my charging dock.
Again just my opinion, YMMV.

Well normally I'd agree with you, but it seems that most people are having issues getting good cables unless they buy the Motorola cable.
It's easier to find an adapter for the standard USB cable than it is to find an OTG cable as well.
Still just an idea, but I figured I'd see what everyone thought.
all you need is the Motorola Mini-USB to Micro-USB adapter, a USB extension cable and some scissors.
you'd to still carry around a Female-Female adapter for your USB cables with your idea, i'd rather not rip open my xoom and solder **** when the other option is easier.
Also, if you don't plan on upgrading to LTE, you could just wire up a USB port to the card slot for the LTE card, it should have USB routed to it.

This actually sounds like a better idea... Was thinking of how I could add in a full-size USB port to remove the extra cable completely. USB out the top would also allow me to hook up an external HDD and still sit the Xoom up in a cinema position.
The question with doing that though, is will it be recognized as a host-mode connection, and if not how would you get it to act as a host-mode connection without the 'fifth pin'?

"I have bought a 4 way USB hub which has a usb socket on its input lead. This can be plugged into your PC or into a usb mains charger or usb car charger.
If the input lead is plugged into one of the four output sockets and the lead is cut open and the red and black wires are exposed, a 2A 5v charger can be connected to these wires by twisting together and taping.
This then powers both sides of the hub with 2A supply and by-passes the protection.
It does sacrifice 1 output socket but HD2 +keyboard+mouse= happy Ubuntu

The charger is an old Nokia one and has a lump of plastic near the end which I assume houses a fuse of sorts.
Reading through Plopper's thread again I am sure this is OK, but am unwilling to brick my HD2!
You could get a 7 way usb hub and add things like external HDD or (my favourite) a usb fan to cool down your HD2!

this usually means the idea is a dud or its been done before!
I have searched around but can only find y-cables, which supply extra 500mA from another USB socket but only allow 1 device connection.
If this has been done before, I apologise.
However, I got bored of waiting and went ahead with cutting up leads and splicing wires. I flashed WM6.5 and loaded Ubuntu 0.3 (only one with USB host that I can find!)
AND IT WORKS!!!!!
I had to buy a micro USB cable because I didn't want to cut my stock one (get a data cable because a charging cable only has 2 wires in it).
Note on cable colours, apparently there may be variation on some manufacturer's cable core colours, take care to identify by tracing circuits on the hub and checking continuity from the pins to each core.
Also, being an electrician, I am wondering what the current carrying capacity of the tiny core cables are, I will have to look it up at some point (adiabatic equation) meanwhile check for overheating.

467 views after first posting this and after re-reading plopper's thread again I have realised what plopper and Mister B were saying in their last posts.
There is no protection in unpowered usb hubs, so no need to bypass it!
I have over-complicated everything.
It is only necessary to change the hub lead plug to a microUSB one and then connect the charger to the usb plug which you have just cut off, then plug it into one of the spare ports.
Oh well never mind!

i tried it (XB V.19 that is based on it, with the same kernel USBH enabled) but unfortunately it doesn't work, i saw in the system partition of this rom and i saw that there aren't any driver for USB hardwares support (USB Keyboard, mouse, USB Flash memory...)...so i think that the problem is this (no drivers support)

If you're wondering if it's possible to use a Micro-USB extension cable with a Slimport adapter the answer is yes! I have successfully used one to connect my Nexus 4 to a Slimport SP1002 adapter, then connect that via HDMI to my Pioneer SPH-DA100 car stereo.The bulky adapter with its myriad of connections and super short cable to connect to my phone is now hidden under the center console.
I can't post links yet, to find the cable I used Google "angledcables" micro-b usb extension

GPS, and as a workaround for the poor audio output of the Nexus 4. Although the ability to watch Netflix while waiting in the car is nice, too.

The cable from amazon did not work but the cable from angledcables.com worked! Even though the envelope says usbfirewire.com, they have different models of micro usb cables

and i can CONFIRM it is WORKING for AppRadio 3 as an extension between the phone and Slimport adapter.
I suppose it's a hit or miss depending on if the company wired the 4th pin through (Which is usually used for OTG) or not. Slimport uses all 5 pins.

After a few days I had to disconnect the extension because it makes things way too unstable. The slightest bump stops the video signal. You have to totally remove it and plug it back in before it works again. I might try a few things to fasten the connectors together but I might just go without it.

Sorry to revive an old thread. Did you get this sorted out?
I'm in same situation. I just got Pioneer AVH-x8500BHS and SlimPort adapter to mirror from my N5 to the x8500 HU.
But the Slimport is in my glovebox, I want to move it to my center console for easier access and better GPS signal.
I'm afraid all this plugging/unplugging of the SlimPort will eventually wear out the cable or the N5 port.
Anyone ever figure out a way to get the extension to work without it cutting in and out all the time?

Has anyone found a way to tether through one of the Smart Dock USB ports? I'm interested in using the data from my phone but don't want to use the Hotspot function (don't want to root or pay for HotSpot so I wanna use tethering).
This Smart Dock was alot more finnicky that I had thought. For those having trouble, for me at least, HDMI and anything you're connecting via USB have to be plugged into the dock before you dock your phone to get anything to work. I also have to plug in the HDMI to get the USB ports to work which doesn't make sense to me but what do I know. I was surprised the dock doesn't have the full Micro B connector which I thought was necessary to have MHL and USBOTG at the same. If that's not the case, I'm not sure I understand what the extra pins are for on the Micro-B plug. My screen also automatically shuts off when I dock with HDMI, not sure if that's a "feature" or not.

Maybe it's my model number. I got the EDD-S20EWE. I notice the current one is S20JWE. Or maybe the $60 sale on Amazon got me a knock-off. In any case, there's no way in heck I could recommend this thing to anyone. Too finnicky. One of those gadgets you gotta hold your tongue right to make it work like its supposed to. It works when it wants to for me. I'm driving myself crazy unplugging and plugging stuff back in and restarting things to make it work.
If you want a desktop experience like me, instead of this thing, I'd recommend Screen Mirroring, bluetoothing to keyboard/mouse, and either tethering your data if need that like me, or adding the USB Connector dongle for any other USB items you need. Much less headache from my experience. YMMV.
