I used to think the same but ever since i got my brand new Alienware Laptop, Beats, Ipad and Digital Camera stolen and insurance didnt pay out jack, any gadget damage seems to pale in comparison. For some reason I always think back to that now - Adam
Id still be pretty gutted though haha.

FAIL.

I've dropped the M8 so many times... But this

Really guys? This is just based on chance, not an indication of how well your phone handles drops. You could just as well drop it ten times and not hit the display.

If you drop any phone, with no case, like that from that height it's not going to survive intact.

Yep definately, no phone would have survived that! Hell a lot of phones wouldn't have survived the side drop either.
The HTC one is one of the most durable highend phones out there - Adam

Just place a Spigen or other brand Glass screenprotector. If your phone falls, the glass screen protector will be broken, when you remove that, your phone display is 100% OK

Dropped it!!!

Dropped my blackstone last night, head height onto concrete!
Its fine except for bad scuff on housing by sync connector, lucky or what.
Paul.
Lucky for falling on the sync connector(not screen) and Touch HDs good construction!!
Good construction?
remember the 3310's ?
you could drop em of 2 stories high and re-attach the battery and cover and you were good to go.. Wouldnt want to do that to my HD..

Good Construction????????????? Your kidding....I mean I much prefer my Blackstone to my wife's iphone but the casing is flimsier than paper machete by comparison. I would much prefer a little extra weight and a solid casing.

solid casing-- agree on that (cuz the phone aint going in screw when you try to bend it, but it squeaks a lot) but it is much more solid than a lot of phones that I have held in my hand(not the hardest of them, but still..) its quite solid for a device at that size , just compare it to some PDAs with screen atleast 3.5 inches large-- not all of them are solid but some are more solid---- but those all were of course my thoughts!!
Splashed it!
Ive treated my Touch HD like a puppet for the last two months, then I leave it on the table at a friend's house for five minutes while I go to the loo and some idiot splashes wine or something over it...
For a day the phone thought it had headphones plugged in, and now the power button doesn't work. Guess I should be grateful that that's all, but I kinda feel like someone plucked the leg off my new puppy
Appears to be no real point to this thread. Yes you dropped phone and it had a bad scuff. You haven't actually asked for anything

Oh! How horrible! I can't believe you would show something like that on a public site! There could be children watching!
My sympathies. I can't own a smartphone without insurance either, and for those of us who torture their smartphones like myself, it's worth every penny.
What's the deductible?
wouldn't it be easier to just replace the glass? I imagine it's cheaper than the deductible. ifixit did a tear down of the atrix and the glass is not affixed to the screen like the iphones, so all you'd need to do is get a new glass and slap that on, then put the phone back together.

Following that logic, most rock, alternative, and hardcore music denies their artists as being musicians because they turn distortion on on their amps.

Insurance is the best $5 a month you can spend. Very smart move on your part. My wife dropped her 3 month old Evo in a puddle. After soaking it in rice for a few days it still works, but the screen has a purple tint sometimes.

Wow hahaha I'm glad I only misplace my phones when I'm high.

What reasons are you getting/(rid of) the Nexus 4?

As the title says, for what reasons are you getting the nexus 4? Or even getting rid of the nexus 4?
Could it be because of the lack of memory? (Is 16 not enough, and is it a pain always connecting it to your laptop/desktop to change anything on it?
There's no real thread for all the good and bad points of this device.
I personally have yet to actually get this phone, and was put off by it's lack of usb capabilities particularly with a ps3 controller. But earlier I discovered it's possible to connect a ps3 pad to this phone purely by bluetooth, so I now again want this phone as soon as google sort out the stock and shipping problems.
What's your view on it?
Reason to get it, Cheap, Pure google. Latest updates for years.
Reasons to get rid of it such as only 16GB storage, fragile, no 4G are just stupid as everyone is well aware of this BEFORE they purchase the phone.
my phone just fell from the recliner onto a rug which is sitting on a hardwood floor. its pretty much an 18" drop. that popped my glass loose. i can now barely squeeze the bottom and i get a clickin noise. 2 days after my 15 day return.
the nexus is an absolute hunk of junk and not worth the savings. way too many things to list on how cheap this phone really is.

Unlucky about that.
You're one of many that's complained about how crap the glass screen is. I've tried looking for drop tests on youtube while in the case but there doesn't seem to be anything. Most of the cases look dead flimsy as well.
As you say about the casing of the phone itself is perhaps a downside to it, but not one enough to deffer me from it, a good case should right that flaw (I hope).

Updates isn't really that much of an issue with cyanogenmod only being behind the official release by no time really.
Fraigility is a concern but as I said above a good case should right this flaw. I don't see 4G as a massive thing at this moment in time. It's fairly new in the UK, and massively overpriced comapred to standard 3G/+

HTC One Black Scuffs

Can anyone with the HTC One in black confirm that it does not scuff like the paint on the iPhone 5? I currently have an iPhone 5 and it will suck to go to another phone that is painted black.
Not seen anyone with a black HTC One yet on these forums but if they exist I am sure they will let you know.
There is a short video on YouTube that answers this. I can't post links as I am a noob here but if you search for 'HTC One Anti Scratch' you should find it.

Black is not released yet but we have been assured it is anodised. The iPhone5 was a joke arriving with chips in the paintwork out of the box! While it is VERY hard to produce things perfectly and there may be a slight flaw somewhere on the phone, some of the iPhone 5s were shocking.

FWIW - I have been using an iPhone 5 since launch day without a single scratch on it (no case or protector). I do however treat my phone considerably better than most. It has never been dropped and is always set down on something soft, never on hard surfaces.
Again, it all depends on how you treat the phone. Under the right conditions, I'm sure the HTC One will scratch as well. Hopefully not as easily as the iPhone though.

Thanks for the video. And that's okay, I don't mind a scratch here and there as my iPhone has scratches as well. But what really concerns me is CNET.co.uk's review of the HTC One Black where they mention the HTC One is actually painted, not black anodized metal, so it chips even faster than an iPhone 5. That in itself is concerning.
I really want a beautiful Android phone like this one, but unfortunately there are some things that are starting to turn me off, like the buttons that are too pushed in with the phone and the IR blaster being on the left, as well as the 2,300maH battery which would've been great for yesteryear but no so much to today's standards.
It's so hard to find a beautiful phone that performs like you want it and has top of the line specifications. I had the HTC One X and had to return it due to manufacturing defects and other problems with Sense (goddamn I hate Sense).
Sorry about that rant, just wanted to know about the black scuffs as that would be a dealbreaker for me.
Cnet.co.uk review got it wrong, it's not painted. It's anodized for sure.
Op, can you change the topic to: .... does not scuff?

While I'm not trying to start a war here, because I don't know this stuff as well as some others, I do know that the iPhone is anodized.
A large part of an anodizing process (and it's overall resistance against scuffs/scratches) comes down to the type of metal and its hardness (tempered vs. non-tempered) along with depth, dye, and the finishing process itself. Anodizing is quite a bit different than just spraying some paint on something and moving along - however, it does have the ability to chip/scuff almost just as easily (depending on the process and materials used).

What it means to stand by your product

Ok it a company says they stand by their product, I think they should mean it. Take for example. when HTC release the One M8 they said that they stood by their product and put there money where their mouth was by offering a free 6 month screen replacement program to go along with the phone.
With the Nexus 6 and all their other phones, Motorola says that they "stand by their product" but what I just learned is that they only stand by their product if you PAY them to do so. The Nexus 6 is a very large phone sporting a 5.9" screen. And given it's size and weight, I believe that Motorola choose to skip a few corner when it came to the screen construction, resulting in a screen as shatter resistant as the iPhone 4.
Note to Motorola, if you are going to say that you stand by your product, then STAND BY YOU PRODUCT if not, then shut the heck up. I will keep this crack phone, which cracked by falling between my car seat without any scratch on its body , (only because i have no other phone) but as soon as HTC release a new phone with Android 5.0 I'm switching company, and sticking with the company that actually knows what it means to stand by their product.
You know I was kind of thinking about this when I bought the Motorola Nexus 6. I thought to myself man why don't they offer something like HTC does with the cracked screens. The screens don't cost that much and not many people are going to break them compared to the amount of phones they're going to sell.
I broke the screen on my Galaxy S2 couple years back I took it in to sprint to see how much it was going to cost to get fixed and they did it for free because so many of the screens were breaking. I didn't have to pay for the warranty claim, they didn't even do it as a warranty claim they just did it because so many of the screens were breaking.
To be completely honest I probably would have gotten the Samsung Note 4 over the Nexus 6 just because of their good track record with current screens but I really wanted a pure Nexus experience.
I really hope that I don't become disappointed with this phone.
Being that it is the new Nexus phone though I'm sure we'll see replacement glass on eBay for like $10~20.00 within a couple of months. You always do for the Samsung phones. In fact I just replace the glass on my friends s5, it was $12.00 shipped for the glass, we bought 2 he got a spare!

Im sure the phone will be fine, so long as you have it in a case, and dont drop it face down on the screen.

Unfortunately, the screen for the nexus 6 is not cheap to make ifixit did the tear down on it and the display and the digitizer is fused together so that will drive up the cost. The overall experience of the phone is great it just becomes apparently that there wasn't a lot of money going to the construction of the phone exterior. But if you haven't brought this phone yet I recommend going with the Note 4 because of Samsung success with the Note series.
This was Motorola first phablet and they just did not know how to make a sturdy one.
They all use gorilla glass 3. How is it motorola's fault you broke your screen. It's always someone else's fault.

Yes but again, different phone have different thickness of GG, given the larger screen size, the GG on the N6 is thinner than say the Droid Turbo in order to compensate for the phones' weight, width, and height.
The extra thinnest and the curve edges of the screen equates to a weaker constructed screen.

you have no proof of that, and it sounds like you're just blaming others for your problems.
4 years with a large screen smartphone and i've still never dropped any of mine. that's your issue, not the manufacturers.
If this were a major issue wouldn't we be hearing about it all over?
Sorry about your phone, but sometimes you can just be unlucky
If purchased from t mobile, you do get 1 year manufacturer warranty
Was your phone wearing protection like a screen protector or case and if so was it the glass protector cause I slapped that on right away and have had a few drops already with no damage ever since my unprotected nexus 7 drop and cracking the. Screen I'm all for protection ?

you have no proof of that, and it sounds like you're just blaming others for your problems.
4 years with a large screen smartphone and i've still never dropped any of mine. that's your issue, not the manufacturers.

If this were a major issue wouldn't we be hearing about it all over?
Sorry about your phone, but sometimes you can just be unlucky

Its not a major issue so long as you dont drop it. The issue is the fact that its much more likely to break compared to other phones release this year or even last year.

Was your phone wearing protection like a screen protector or case and if so was it the glass protector cause I slapped that on right away and have had a few drops already with no damage ever since my unprotected nexus 7 drop and cracking the. Screen I'm all for protection ?

No my case wont be here til today, it was on back order by the time i added it to my cart and checked out lol
That's horrible man I feel your pain smh
Take better care of your phone. Of the six devices I've had, I was unlucky enough to break exactly one screen, on my Droid DNA. Guess what? My fault. I then proceeded to pay to have it fixed myself. It was my responsibility to take care of my phone, not HTC's. I blamed myself. Do you see a pattern here?

I've owned a smartphone of some sort since the original iPhone came out, and I've never broken a screen. It sounds like OP's broke by freak accident, but I don't think that means:

I don't know how many of you play the stocks, but there were tons of videos out about sapphire vs gorilla glass when I was investing in GTAT pre them going to OTC.
Anyways, all the guys saying they have dropped their phone prior, all I can say is that is how it starts. Even though you do not notice the crack, it creates mini fractures/fissures in the glass that when dropped again, it will cause it to crack.
Additionally, the construction of can cause an impact on whether or not the glass fractures as easily too. Think of cars with a sunroof.
If screens are breaking at a high frequency, usually it deals with the manufacturer's bad construction.

Congratulation on being Mr. Responsible I guess, I mean your parents must be so proud...First of all guy when I had my Thunderbolt and I was out for a run and it flew out my hand and the screen shattered 9 ways to hell and back, did I blame HTC? no I didn't because that was my fault. I got a new phone....but when I am driving in my car and my phone slide out my pocket and down the side of my car seat and cracks...btw this is something that has happen with my previous phones including my Thunderbolt and I've never had an issue.....well in that case it is clearly shoddy workmanship or like @uhguy said, a freak accident. But its nice to know how responsible you are, really it is, we need more people like you in the world.
