Hi,
My warranty has just run out on my Nexus One so I've decided to unlock the bootloader.
My Aim is to get from stock non rooted Gingerbread to rooted Gingerbread with busybox, SU, and ultimately being able to boot into ubunto in chroot, I've been reading up on all this for a few days now but just need a small amount of help with Recovery, Gingerbread ROM choice, and the order that thing should be done, by someone who's done this before.
I take it the first thing is to install SDK and get The USB Driver working on PC, its running XP by the way.
Then I unlock the bootloader, !HELP! to do this do I enter hboot or fastboot, before connecting the phone to the PC? I have to copy 3 files somewhere and use ADB and run command for **** OEM unlock, can't remember the exact command, (I've got instructions for this) and then agree to void my warranty etc.
I then find and download the correct custom recovery image and copy this into the tools folder of the SDK. And install (got instructions for this to).
!HELP!
Which custom recovery image should I use? and which Rooted Gingerbread ROM is most popular ?
After installing the custom Recovery can I just flash a custom ROM? I've seen something about SU.zip mentioned, is this necessary?
If I can just flash a custom ROM, I do this by downloading and copying the custom ROM of choice to the root of my SD card. Start phone in recovery mode and install from SD? I then install the google add ons .zip (if required) using the same method.
Sorry for such a long post and so many questions but I can find all the information for what I'd like to achieve but not in one place and nowhere in any chronological order.
Any advice appreciated .
Please read the Wiki, "Root" guides, "Unlock bootloader and install custom ROM" thread. Execute until the point of installing custom ROM.
Look in "Recovery" section for recoveries, install the latest Amon_RA.
Ive Successfully Rooted Gingerbread by following this method http://chensun.net/android-development/root-nexus-one-with-android-2-3-3-gingerbread/8/
GB ROM
Im running CM7RC4 and am happy w/ it

Good show with unlocking the bootloader, it's the best way.
However... looking at your flag, you're in the UK... this means your phone is still in warranty, as we get 24 months.

My understanding was 12 months but, your probably right. I've unlocked the bootloader now and fortunately my N1 is in good condition, funtioning correctly ( well at least for now, I'll have to cross that bridge if and when I get to it )
Getting on to custom recovery, I realised something wasn't quite right after my first attempt. I installed custom recovery but without su.zip on my SD card. I managed after rebooting my PC to complete the custom recovery with su.zip on the SD card and was successful in that I've got SU on my N1. However I am quite sure I do need to fix something with the recovery, can someone explain what method or how I do this now. I've unlocked the bootloader, I am rooted with gingerbread but with a dodgy recovery.
Or do I do exactly the same as I did with su.zip and push recovery from ADB and flash from SD card, making sure that fix-recovery.zip is indeed on the SD card.
Hope this makes sence?
Any help appreciated.
After I unlocked my n1 I used rom manager for everything else, first flashing clockwork mod, then selecting a stable cm 7 build and flashing that, since then I've done everything through recovery, flashing custom kernels and nightlie builds, I'm currently using cm7 rc4 highly recommend rover theme too!

I've got ROM Manager installed and if I want to try anything it tells me I have to flash clockwork mod recovery, I was unsure if It was safe to do this after using a completely different recovery image to get where I am now.
Sorry for being such a paranoid newbie, but we all got to start somewhere ;-)

I think CM7 rc4 is next, I do want to get Linux up and running though, even if it's in a virtual environment (chroot). and deffinately would like to check some nice themes out, I've not even looked at themes yet, I suppose it's quite easy after unlocking bootloader, installing custom recovery then flashing su.zip though. But still any pointers where to start my quest wouldn't go a miss ;-)
Recovery
its safe to let rom manager flash clockwork, ive done it
I heared about amonRA but it seemed like clockworkmod was more commonly used so I went for that, but yeah it's fine to flash a new recovery, just remember that whilst it's rare things can go wrong, it's YOUR fault not anyone's here regardless of the advice you may get here if your phone gets bricked or screwed up.
That said I'm still new to this but I'm learning as I'm going, just remember to backup your phone using rom manager before doing anything major so that you can always recover your phone/rom.
I started out hacking my nokia 5800 so was keen to have a go with the android platform.

CM7 stable
Have you upgraded to cm 7 stable? its a definate upgrade
hey guys, im bored and was thinking of installing ubuntu on my nexus but before i did it i was wondering how do you get back to android. im pretty sure your recovery stays, so if i just boot back into twrp can i just restore a backup or flash a rom and then its all good or do you have to do a complete reset, unlock etc.
also i saw zedo's video start this but didn't mention how sucessful it was. can you backup ubuntu via twrp and restore it whenever? this isn't really important to me but its been in the back of my mind.
thanks in advance guys
This doesn't exactly answer your question, but I think you should give this a try: MultiROM
It lets you easily install Ubuntu alongside your current Android installation, and it's easy to uninstall too. I've been switching back and forth between Android and Ubuntu for a day now and have encountered zero issues.

cool! ill look into it. if anyone has answers to my original question tho that would be awesome to
I'm mostly guessing here, but couldn't you just use on of the Nexus Toolkits to revert to stock and flash recovery? Whichever recovery Ubuntu installs (why would it even install another one, I don't know), there must always be fastboot or flash option?
I installed it the other day. You lose everything. You could keep your nandroid on your PC. Or just install multi rom like mentioned above.

Alright, Ive had my nexus 7 for a while and I want to unlock it and root it. I havent decided what rom to use yet. (Would love input on good ones, 4.2.x) I plan on using the Motley kernel, but I was wondering in what order should I flash them in, should I flash the rom and gapps then let it boot up and settle in, and then flash the kernel? Or the opposite? (Kernel first, then rom). Just looking for an answer to the flashing order and feedback on good 4.2.x roms, I was thinking either Paranoid 2.99 Beta or CM10 Nightlies
ROM goes first; otherwise your custom kernel will be overwritten.

Alright thank you, now Im just wondering about a good 4.2.x rom
Ok Ive unlocked and root my nexus, and I try installing a custom recovery (TWRP) and then when I go to the reboot recovery option in Nexus toolkit, it boots to a droid with a red triangle, and wont do anything, I have to hold down the button till it restarts..
I went through most of the the Nakasig Tilapia ROMs (Nexus 7 3G) here on XDA and decided on this one from my signature (temasek's).
Also, tried some kernels (faux, motley) and decided on the franco one (based on the Battery Saving skills I saw in a study-type post).
Why this temasek's? I was searching and didn't find a ROM more flexible than the CyanogenMod at the moment. I may be mistaking (this is my oppinion).
It has a lot of options and customization you can do, BUT, this temasek's ROM has all of these and also his own features ( Tethering and portable hotspot was what I was seeking, you can also check the rest out).
Hope that helped. :silly:

Ditch the toolkit first of all. The best way would be to use fastboot, but Goomanager and ROM Manager can flash them from within Android.

if running stock, just with root, you have to rename or delete the recovery-from-boot.p file. or the stock recovery will replace your custom recovery after every boot, every time.
from twrps' site.. http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/103
The stock ROM*will automatically replace TWRP with the stock recovery.* To prevent the stock ROM*from replacing TWRP, boot TWRP, go to the mount menu and mount system, press the home button, then press Advanced ->*File Manager.* Browse to /system and select the file named recovery-from-boot.p then choose to rename the file to recovery-from-boot.bak.

to transfer from one device to another, computer to nexus 7.
Thank all of you so much, all probably just stay stock for a few days but I'm might switch, do you guys have any recommendation of kernels and Roms?
I'd like to recommend u to see the following thread to select your 1st ROM and Kernel.

Regarding ROM, personally I love ParanoidAndroid because of its customizability. But as your 1st choice, how about CM10?
About Kernel, I love Franco #25 for 4.1 and #31 for 4.2. To select Kernel, pls refer to the following thread.

Ok Ive been running Motley kernel for around a day now and its amazing, but I was thinking about testing cm 10.1, but I was wondering when I factory reset and clear the data, will it erase my Nandroid backup?

Just do a factory reset don't erase data or however it's worded. All the same it's never a bad idea to have a Nandroid on your PC or a USB drive.

How do you access the backup on the device from the computer, I didn't think you could see root directory natively

TWRP saves the backup to the /SD/ and I thought CWM did as well. Even if it doesn't, copy the backup from the root to the /SD/ with your tablet then transfer to the computer.
Alright cool, I just flashed CM 10.1, what kernels work with it?

Disregard all of that lol, I flashed over motley on Cm10.1 and it performs beautifully
Okay, I gave this a shot.
I used the Nexus Root Toolkit and rooting the thing went pretty well. I downloaded a Cyanogenmod rom, actually 2, and that was the start of my issues I think. I accidentally loaded the nightly instead of the stable.
I also didn't realize that adb would not boot anymore with 4.2.2 so I was stuck. I checked in the settings of the Nexus and it loaded up various roms you could use. I would select them and it would start to load, but then show the error message with the little android on his back.
I followed the tutorial "Root and Install CWM On Nexus 7 Running JB 4.2.2" in an attempt to get some control back and it went well until I was supposed to find the zip on the device. I had copied it over, separate from any folder, but I could not find it while in bootloader.
I ended up manually putting it in bootloader and using the Nexus Root Toolkit to restore the stock rom.
I liked certain things about the custom rom, but it was a pain not having the Google Apps, and I could not get the Gapps to install either.
Obviously I knew just enough to get halfway there. I am not sure when I will try this again, although I would like to learn more. I guess I better read some more tutorials on here.
Why didn't you just flash gapps in recovery?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
Well first off there isn't Android 4.2.2 for the new Nexus 7, you must have followed a tutorial for the old one.
I used the nexus 7 toolkit.... There lies your problem
You used a toolkit not knowing what you're actually doing. Or what any of the terms mean / how and what they're used for etc.
Adb doesn't boot... Um what. Fastboot couldn't flash cm11...um what 4.2.2 um what
Hello, I am in need of help. could someone please give me the original stock rom for the Nexus 7 (2012) I have recently used cm installer to install cyanogenmod. However, it has recently caused some issues with charging/syncing. I can only charge the device when off, and it won't show as connected on the computer. Also, how do I flash stock from device, since I can't connect to a computer? I would like to automatically unroot after flashing original stock rom, if possible. Kinda like a factory reset.

If you cannot use a computer, you cannot revert to total stock. However, you can try TeamAndroid's ROMs found on GooManager which are exact replicas of stock. Good luck.
