Okay, I gave this a shot.
I used the Nexus Root Toolkit and rooting the thing went pretty well. I downloaded a Cyanogenmod rom, actually 2, and that was the start of my issues I think. I accidentally loaded the nightly instead of the stable.
I also didn't realize that adb would not boot anymore with 4.2.2 so I was stuck. I checked in the settings of the Nexus and it loaded up various roms you could use. I would select them and it would start to load, but then show the error message with the little android on his back.
I followed the tutorial "Root and Install CWM On Nexus 7 Running JB 4.2.2" in an attempt to get some control back and it went well until I was supposed to find the zip on the device. I had copied it over, separate from any folder, but I could not find it while in bootloader.
I ended up manually putting it in bootloader and using the Nexus Root Toolkit to restore the stock rom.
I liked certain things about the custom rom, but it was a pain not having the Google Apps, and I could not get the Gapps to install either.
Obviously I knew just enough to get halfway there. I am not sure when I will try this again, although I would like to learn more. I guess I better read some more tutorials on here.
Why didn't you just flash gapps in recovery?

Well first off there isn't Android 4.2.2 for the new Nexus 7, you must have followed a tutorial for the old one.
I used the nexus 7 toolkit.... There lies your problem
You used a toolkit not knowing what you're actually doing. Or what any of the terms mean / how and what they're used for etc.
Adb doesn't boot... Um what. Fastboot couldn't flash cm11...um what 4.2.2 um what

Hi,
My warranty has just run out on my Nexus One so I've decided to unlock the bootloader.
My Aim is to get from stock non rooted Gingerbread to rooted Gingerbread with busybox, SU, and ultimately being able to boot into ubunto in chroot, I've been reading up on all this for a few days now but just need a small amount of help with Recovery, Gingerbread ROM choice, and the order that thing should be done, by someone who's done this before.
I take it the first thing is to install SDK and get The USB Driver working on PC, its running XP by the way.
Then I unlock the bootloader, !HELP! to do this do I enter hboot or fastboot, before connecting the phone to the PC? I have to copy 3 files somewhere and use ADB and run command for **** OEM unlock, can't remember the exact command, (I've got instructions for this) and then agree to void my warranty etc.
I then find and download the correct custom recovery image and copy this into the tools folder of the SDK. And install (got instructions for this to).
!HELP!
Which custom recovery image should I use? and which Rooted Gingerbread ROM is most popular ?
After installing the custom Recovery can I just flash a custom ROM? I've seen something about SU.zip mentioned, is this necessary?
If I can just flash a custom ROM, I do this by downloading and copying the custom ROM of choice to the root of my SD card. Start phone in recovery mode and install from SD? I then install the google add ons .zip (if required) using the same method.
Sorry for such a long post and so many questions but I can find all the information for what I'd like to achieve but not in one place and nowhere in any chronological order.
Any advice appreciated .
Please read the Wiki, "Root" guides, "Unlock bootloader and install custom ROM" thread. Execute until the point of installing custom ROM.
Look in "Recovery" section for recoveries, install the latest Amon_RA.
Ive Successfully Rooted Gingerbread by following this method http://chensun.net/android-development/root-nexus-one-with-android-2-3-3-gingerbread/8/
GB ROM
Im running CM7RC4 and am happy w/ it

Good show with unlocking the bootloader, it's the best way.
However... looking at your flag, you're in the UK... this means your phone is still in warranty, as we get 24 months.
Nooooo

My understanding was 12 months but, your probably right. I've unlocked the bootloader now and fortunately my N1 is in good condition, funtioning correctly ( well at least for now, I'll have to cross that bridge if and when I get to it )
Getting on to custom recovery, I realised something wasn't quite right after my first attempt. I installed custom recovery but without su.zip on my SD card. I managed after rebooting my PC to complete the custom recovery with su.zip on the SD card and was successful in that I've got SU on my N1. However I am quite sure I do need to fix something with the recovery, can someone explain what method or how I do this now. I've unlocked the bootloader, I am rooted with gingerbread but with a dodgy recovery.
Or do I do exactly the same as I did with su.zip and push recovery from ADB and flash from SD card, making sure that fix-recovery.zip is indeed on the SD card.
Hope this makes sence?
Any help appreciated.
After I unlocked my n1 I used rom manager for everything else, first flashing clockwork mod, then selecting a stable cm 7 build and flashing that, since then I've done everything through recovery, flashing custom kernels and nightlie builds, I'm currently using cm7 rc4 highly recommend rover theme too!

I've got ROM Manager installed and if I want to try anything it tells me I have to flash clockwork mod recovery, I was unsure if It was safe to do this after using a completely different recovery image to get where I am now.
Sorry for being such a paranoid newbie, but we all got to start somewhere ;-)

I think CM7 rc4 is next, I do want to get Linux up and running though, even if it's in a virtual environment (chroot). and deffinately would like to check some nice themes out, I've not even looked at themes yet, I suppose it's quite easy after unlocking bootloader, installing custom recovery then flashing su.zip though. But still any pointers where to start my quest wouldn't go a miss ;-)
Recovery
its safe to let rom manager flash clockwork, ive done it
I heared about amonRA but it seemed like clockworkmod was more commonly used so I went for that, but yeah it's fine to flash a new recovery, just remember that whilst it's rare things can go wrong, it's YOUR fault not anyone's here regardless of the advice you may get here if your phone gets bricked or screwed up.
That said I'm still new to this but I'm learning as I'm going, just remember to backup your phone using rom manager before doing anything major so that you can always recover your phone/rom.
I started out hacking my nokia 5800 so was keen to have a go with the android platform.

CM7 stable
Have you upgraded to cm 7 stable? its a definate upgrade
recently i rooted my nexus 7 16gb w/4.21 with the toolkit and did everything and installed all program and features that i needed and went smooth but then wanted to flash a custom theme to it and did it but then my nexus 7 tab froze in menu and wont load into menu dont know if bricked tried to unistall wipe lock and unroot everything possible but no luck now i cant even turn on without usb connected and receovery doesnt load properly so i can do anything could i get help on how to recover in to stock
if the theme was bad, all you had to do was reflash your rom. but you used a root toolkit and didnt learn about what you were doing. next time take a little bit of time to learn about the proper procedures and processes, and root your device the right way, without a root toolkit. when you learn how to do things right, youll see its much easier than a toolkit. get back to stock--> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
If all else fails, you can always download the stock factory image from Google and flash it onto your device via the toolkit or adb fastboot. This will install the stock ROM, recovery, and bootloader.

Hey guys so I am coming over from using a jailbroken iphone to now using a rooted nexus 4, which i found harder to do than jb an iphone (yeah ik i'm that bad)
And so here I am today I have my nexus 4 on the 4.2.2 update, no custom rom or kernel or anything, just super user access. And I really wanna start doing more such as the 4.3 update, custom roms and tweaks and such but before then I wanna make sure I got my back up down.
I rooted using the "Nexus 4 toolkit" and by choosing the one option does all option, which installed the twrp backup I believe.
Now I am super noob to android and i've already read the pinned guides for introduction to android and rooting but the rooting one was too complicated for me.
So I'm asking for easy 4th grade instruction for anyone who has the patience and time to help me accomplish these things
1. get onto 4.3
2. have backups for future use
3. be able to have a custom rom installed.
4. not end up with a new paper weight (like I did before when I first tried rooting, yes I'm that bad)
plz and thank you very much,
1. Download the Nexus 4 Toolkit which I'm assuming you already have since you rooted your phone.
2. Install a custom recovery, I recommend TWRP for ease of use and because its awesome D).
3. Download the 4.3 flashable zip from the Android Development forum and put it on your external storage.
4. Turn off your phone.
5. Hold down the power + vol down button til you get a screen which says start, and a bunch of scary looking things
6. Use the volume keys to scroll down to Recovery Mode
7. Click the power button
8. Once you're in TWRP, click Backup
9. Click start
10. It'll take a while, but once its finished, go back to the start screen of TWRP and click Install
11. Click wipe, then yes
12. Find the zip file of the 4.3 flashable you downloaded.
13. Click it
14. Wait a bit, and you have successfully installed Android 4.3!
Additional Info:
Regarding wanting to flash a custom ROM, do the same process you just did except with a custom rom zip rather than stock android.
If you ever want to restore, wipe then go to restore and select the backup you'd like to restore from
I hope this helped!

Pretty good. I do believe they already have twrp. So just power off. Or download quick reboot app. Or ROM manager to reboot recovery if you Dont want to hold power and volume down till you get to fast boot. Or boot loader. But its all easy. With twrp you'll see you swype to engage. First thing when you get into your recovery is just click backup. Follow prompts. Rename or leave as date. I name mine virgin flash. Then back out to twrp opening again. Then wipe data factory reset wipe cache and dalvick cache. Then most cases no need to wipe system unless changing base. In this case of 4.3 I would. And returning I would. So just reboot once your backed up. So you can go download all your ****.
Gooim. App fave. Play store you'll find it. Then ROM toolbox. Then titanium backup. Then Franco kernel app. Then system tuner or system panel. Then kernel tweaking apps. All are up to you and optional. If your looking for something worthy to flash I like these.
Carbon. Liquid , and jelly beer. Also miui is the "Different ui" as most others will look identical. The ones I named can have themes in the chooser downloaded. Gives android its ui overhaul. Just enjoy ...

OP:
Do NOT use toolkits. Take the time to learn how to do things manually. It will serve you so much better in the future than just pressing a button as you'll actually KNOW what's going on and how to fix any potential issues.
To everyone recommending the use of toolkits, shame on you
Thanks for the input everyone gonna go down the list and try the instructions you guys have given and come back and tell you how it goes

As you mentioned about nexus 4 toolkit just use it to relock the boot loader and then do a normal reboot
Now go to setting>>about phone>>system update there you will see that 4.3 update is available just do it now you should be in 4.3
Now follow this guide for rooting and stuff http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2384824
by following the guide u will be able to get root access in 4.3 and can be able to install a custom recovery
Using custom recovery u can flash a custom ROM NOTE:- FOLLOW THE INSTURCTION GIVEN BY THE DEVELOPER OF THE ROM IN THE THREAD
ITS SO SIMPLE THSN USING A CRAPPY IPHONE
Hey all, I was installing MultiRom so that I could try out different roms with the primary purpose of getting GameCih working on my Nexus 7 (1st Gen). I went through the first steps but got the "Kernel: doesn't have kexec-hardboot patch!" message. So following the guide at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2457063, I went ahead to patch that kernel. However, when I hit install, I realized it said it was a 4.1 stock kernel. The install ran and when the boot started, it just sat on the colorful X for 10-15 minutes. I booted into recovery and tried to figure out a way to get the proper kernel on the device and install that, but had no luck. Unfortunately, I backed up using the Wugs Nexus Toolkit and forgot to do it within the recovery on the device. So are my only options to wipe the device and start over or can I install the proper kernel, or is there another solution? Thanks so much for your help.
Sorry for the double post, but I waited several days to reply. I ended up going ahead and doing a wipe. It kept the rom, but did seem to fix the issue. I also tried installing the AOSP 4.2.2 ROM in MultiRom, but that one isn't working. And once I did that, several of the apps stopped working in the PAC Rom. It doesn't look like I'm going to get much help here, but I thought I'd at least respond to my original post
This is the third time trying to write this without my computer blowing up, so I'll be short. After five months of not using my N7 for certain reasons, I came home to update it to Kitkat as I was unable to do so before I came out. The OTA downloaded fine and, like updates before, I clicked install. Sadly, this time the installation did not work correctly, and I stupidly forgot to grab the error code that was thrown. After the failed installation, it went into a bootloop using the new boot screen, and with the boot screen graphic glitch I've seen other people complain about. I can get into Recovery Mode easy enough, which is running ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.2.3. The bootloader is also unlocked. I've tried to do a factory reset from CWMR, but it hasn't helped.
I've gotten quite rusty with my skills in this work (as if I had any in the first place), so I thought coming here would be a good idea. Any thoughts on how to get Kitkat on working and proper?
nexus root toolkit
Download nexus root toolkit or unified android toolkit to your PC .Install drivers etc and do a factory restore using the KitKat factory image or the restore options in the toolkit
