[Q] Phone is Device Manager but not My Computer... - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I ran over my phone. The screen does not work anymore. When I connect the phone to my computer, I get a notification saying that the device can perform faster. So the computer obviously sees the phone. I also see the phone in the device manager, but I do not see it in my computer. The only reason I want to access it, is to download some pictures that were stupidly saved on the device instead of the sd card. Any ideas how to access my pictures?!
Thanks,
G
p.s. My phone backs up pictures to my google+ account, but I am not sure if it does that to ALL pictures, or only to the ones that were on the sd card?! No way for me to check as of right now, what pictures did in fact got backed up.

Anyone?!

How on earth did you manage to run over your phone?
Did you have USB debugging enabled before the screen broke?
Did you have a lockscreen security other than swipe or none?

It happened in the garage. I guess it must have fallen out earlier when I was unloading something?!

If you did have USB debugging enabled, you can try copying the entire content through ADB.
Use 'adb pull /sdcard/ /sdcard/'. This will copy all internal files into your C:\SDcard directory. Be advised, this could take quite a while depending on how much data it is.

I didn't even know what ADB is, but I just googled it... I am going to have to do some reading to figure out how to use it, but at least it is a start! I will give it a try and keep you posted.
thanks you,

Hey,
I finally got a chance to try ADB. The problem is, I get "device unauthorized". I did a google search and pretty much every search result says the same, "... go into the settings and change...". As you know, I cannot do that since my screen is not working. I guess my only option is to get a new screen.
Thanks again,
G

ugh... disaster! (lol for me...)

So, I took my microSD card out of my phone, put it into my digital camera, and my digital camera formatted the card. So, I lost all my pics I had taken with my phone. One of the pics, I have saved as the screen lock on my phone. Id love to get this pic off my phone, and onto my computer. can anyone suggest the best way to do this? Any responses are greatly appreciated! Thanks!
plug your phone into your computer via the usb cable and mount the sdcard via your phone
You could try this free deleted recovery software called Recuva. It works with removable media. I've attached it to this message for you.
where on the phone is the pic that is my current lock screensaver at? that pic is the pic I want, and I was unable to get it off the SD card (although other things I could get off there, thanks so much for that!). just curious, I would love to salvage this one pic.

*makes mental note to add "pull any file" to my kitchen. heh*
Do you have the sdk / adb installed on your comp? Or are you a totally nubile noob? heh
If you do, from a command prompt it would be:
Code:
adb pull /data/misc/lockscreen c:\temp\
and make sure that c:\temp\ exists before you do it. If you don't have adb installed then download my kitchen (link is in my signature). Open a command prompt (on your computer) and then do this instead:
Code:
cd c:\folder-where-you-extracted-kitchen\adb\
adb-windows pull /data/misc/lockscreen c:\temp\
If you have any problems or errors then copy/paste them to me.
whew, got it. thank you guys sooo sooo much!

DL09 and Mac OS USB Mounting

I upgraded from DI01 to DL09 via OTA and now USB Mounting doesn't work when I connect to my Mac. Has anyone had this issue?
Go into Setting > USB Settings > Ask on connection. Seems to have reset. If this works, ITS DOOBIE TIME

Just got to a mac to give this a shot. Doesn't mount for me either! Shows a CD image with some of the pc installer files but not the directory of the phone itself. Very interesting. Upon unmounting, got a "The disk you inserted was no readable by this computer." message.

Same issues here! I am hoping one of you AWESOME developer types can help us Mac users out on this one. I have made multiple inquiries to both Verizon and Samsung regarding this issue. Surprise, surprise...they each point the finger at the other! I pretty much lost all hope when the last Verizon rep I spoke to suggested I purchase an external SD card reader to transfer files...gulp!
Same problem !!!
Doesn't work with my Mac. Also tried Factory Reset.. still doesn't work....
Looks like I am not the only one ....
Also, the update left a weird status icon on the top next to my 3g icon in the status bar.
Please help..
Thanks,
Dj
Hey, I think I may know what the problem is, even though I don't have a Mac to test. I'm running stock ROM with DL09 OTA, and I discovered that when trying to mount the phone in mass storage mode, it wouldn't. It just showed up as a CD drive that contained an installer for the latest samsung drivers, and an app that opens IE to a page to download some kind of Verizon VCast media manager app. In other words, Verizon is trying to save you from yourself by forcing you to use their crap media manager software, instead of accessing the contents of your SD card directly.
I then realized that I hadn't de-bloated by removing all the Verizon apps, so I froze the VCast and VZNav apps (and Bing, and a few others) in Titanium Backup, and after that, Windows will now recognize and mount the SD card as expected.
I suspect that the funky CD mode thing is what is messing up mounting it on your Mac, so would suggest that you freeze those apps on your phone (you can also go in with ADB or Root Explorer and rename the .apk files, if you don't have Titanium Pro), and reboot the phone, and then try mounting it again.

Can anyone confirm that this works? And particularly: which app needs to be stopped/"frozen"/removed for the fix.
I had searched a half dozen forums and not found a solution, that you found a fix is great news.
Not being able to access the SD card as a USB flash storage device is absolutely intolerable - I would say it's a serious flaw with DL09 and Verizon should "recall" the update or QUICKLY release a patch that "un breaks" it. The fact that they're probably doing this on purpose is sickening and infuriating.
I later confirmed that that doesn't fully fix the problem. The issue is in the kernel itself. Adrynalyne's 1/18 or later kernels fix the problem, at least for Windows, not sure about Mac, but there's a good chance it will. Try that and see what happens.

Please provide more information. How did your photos disappear? Saying they're 'lost' isn't very informative.
To have your internal storage recognised, make sure before connecting your G2 to the PC you go Settings > PC Connection > Set USB connection method and set it to "Media Sync (MTP)". This will set up USB connectivity for transferring images, music, videos and documents.
Unless you give us any extra information about how the files got deleted, there isn't specific help we can give you.
so far what I can tell you:
if files got deleted by mistake... well, its easy then.
I suggest rooting your device - ioroot
Than install Undeleter
Try this and post us the outcome.

is there any way instead of rooting?
Two things from my experience. First one has to be sure to select the correct mode for the USB connection and there may well be ".nomedia" files in directories where images are stored which would prevent say Gallery from seeing them.

for example remo programe for recovery can not detect my phone to recovery my images.
If you know some linux knowledge you can use testdisk. But you need to be rooted. DONT INSTALL AND DOWNLOAD ON THE PHONE any recovery programs . Because it overrite your old data. And all datas will be unrecoverable. Ioroot fine works (it just installs su and supersu.apk on system partition so it wont hurt your data.) Here is more info....

I just said to you if you root your phone, you will probably recover your files but if you dont have root acces you can recover your some folders maybe it will be hurt. So you need to think which one is important "varranty of the phone or recoverable data". But maybe you recover some folders, not all via usb otg. It wont overwrite your old data so if you dont wanna be root (i really dont understand you why you dont wanna be root ) you must use some app on play store and recover your pics and others.. ))

Internal SD Card Paths

Hey guys,
Quick newbie question for you. I followed the procedure in this thread ([ROM][5.1.1][LMY47V] 21 May- Stock Flashable Rom/Factory Image) to a T and have 5.1.1 on the Nexus 4 but for some reason my internal SD card paths are all messed up. I couldn't use my camera to take a photo - it wouldn't save anywhere.
I used Terminal to run the restorecon -FR command for /data/media/0/* and then I restarted the phone and I could use my camera, so that was a good step.
Now I'm in WhatsApp and I can't see any media that people are sending me. The photos stay blurry. Is WhatsApp pointing to a directory that doesn't exist? How can I solve that? Or is my internal SD card ****ed?
I am using TWRP so if you have any solutions I can fully utilize that to fix the path errors or re-flash system img or whatever you think will work! My brother is trying to send me photos through WhatsApp and I can't see 'em!
Any help is appreciated!

You mean the flash_all.bat? Nah - I manually flashed as per the forum thread I linked to. I installed through TWRP, not fastboot. My Nexus 4 only connects as an AC source so I can't even get it communicating with my PC to unroot and flash stock.
So the phone is not recognized in OS X, window, or Linux? Tried different USB cables and USB ports?

Yeah I've pretty much tried everything to get it communicating with the computer again. I think it's a hardware issue - I had my screen replaced and I think some part of the battery assembly wasn't re-installed properly and thus communication ceased. I thought flashing to 5.1.1 would fix what could have been a 4.4.4 issue, as I had USB fast charge enabled with various kernels, but alas this was not to be.
Any ideas about the internal paths?
A screen replacement does involve moving the USB charging port to the new screen and it is possible that this part was damaged and vertical seems to be the case. I assume you don't have access to another phone to test the port.

Yeah no other phone to test the port. I just got an X Play and am using the same cable I was using with my Nexus 4 and communication is flawless - adb, fastboot, all the goodies. I thnk I'll need to take the Nexus to a shop or open it up myself.
Thanks for paying attention to this thread, audit.
Try opening the phone yourself as it is pretty easy but that choice is yours. Good luck!.
Hi Mike, just a hint... did you check the partition status on your device ? To check if it's a logical or hardware issue, here's a reference: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-play/general/partition-layout-t3196367
You can analyze yours with something like: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cls.partition
and eventually mount manually the missing mounts.

Great idea, dev. How do I go about manually mounting? Do I need to use Terminal or something similar?
Thanks for your reply.
mounts & partitions
@XxMikeMasterxX Yes! In terminal emulator.
Code:
su
cat /proc/mounts
- or -
mount
- or -
df
- or -
cat /proc/partitions
to list all partitions/devices/... a bit messy output
The mount command is also what you'll need after you find the problem.
It can mount a partition, remount read-write...in case it's a permission problem, or bind a folder to another, in case it's looking for a specific folder, but your system named it in a different way.
Not sure if this applies to your case...just an idea Did your partitions check return any anomaly ?

Not that I can see. I'm a bit of a noob with Terminal so I'll even have difficulty identifying the erroneous file paths. It's too bad my adb and fastboot don't work. Or else I'd just revert to stock and re-flash everything.

@dev>null Eeeek! Scared! I'll try the app and see what I can see. I guess from there it's a simple remount.
So hypothetically let's say that sdcard is mounted somewhere else by mistake and some app folders end up on the wrong partition/location, do I use a remount to remount that particular folder/location to the proper sdcard path?
Whoa I think I just got it.
@XxMikeMasterxX Exactly! There used to be a bug in CM with wrong sdcard mount point. Take a look at this, I'm sure it will address you to the right direction
And also give you examples for command syntax...

My brother tried the Terminal commands but after he entered su and tried the other 4 commands Term returned "nothing found" each time. What does that mean?
Also, it appears that he needs to remlunt his entire SD card somewhere. What's the folder? Root/sfcard
@XxMikeMasterxX Nexus 4 does not have a physical sdcard, so I guess it's just a missing symbolic link.
Try:
Code:
su
mount -o bind /data/media /sdcard
and see if Whatsapp can save the images now.

Thanks for your recommendations. Yet again, though, the command you provided didn't work. I tried to get him to bind different locations to sdcard but that didn't help either.
A funny thing he told me is that under Settings>Storage he can't open the Internal storage section. He said it just doesn't open.
It's almost like Android installed to a really weird location and isn't recognizing anything. I am really baffled.
I checked out the guide - the o ly problem.is that the phone doesn't connect as a USB device (broken link...battery maybe?) and as such he can't run the adb commands.
I wish it did connect USB though - I'd just have him return to stock and then this would all be erased. Any other ideas, dev? I really don't know what to do next... Thanks for your ideas so far - you've been a great help.

Recover Data From Phone - Screen is smashed up, but phone is working

Hi everyone
It's been a year and as per usual I've smashed the screen on my Nexus 6P.
Have arranged for a repair via the manufacturer, who have advised me they will factory restore the phone when repairing, thereby wiping all data.
I need to recover the data (namely pictures and video), not backed up to Google Drive etc etc, phone is locked via pin/ fingerprint, and won't show up on my PC as removable storage.
Is there anything else I can try?
Many thanks in advance for your help, and apologies if there is a pre-existing thread already on XDA.

I am unsure if USB-Debugging is enabled.
Okay, if the phone is on and you can use the fingerprint scanner to unlock it, plug it into the PC. Use ADB to see if the device is recognized. Use the command 'adb devices'.
If that works, just use ADB to pull your files.
So say you wanted to pull your pictures that you took from the phone and save them to your Pictures folder on PC, the code would be;
adb pull /storage/emulated/0/DCIM c:/Users/(YourUsernameHere)/Pictures
You can save it to any location on the PC you'd like, just change the path above.
If you just want to save everything you could use;
adb pull /storage/emulated/0 c:/(PathYouWantTheFilesSavedTo)
I'll look around and see if there's anything to be done without ADB enabled, or a way to get it enabled.
I'd say if it's not enabled and you can verify touch still works, if you can find someone with another 6P, you could unlock yours via fingerprint and then use the other one to find your way to developer settings to enable it on yours. If touch doesn't work, I'm honestly not sure if there's a way to get it turned on. I'll look around or if anyone else has any ideas then we might be able to get you set up.
Use this to set up ADB properly on PC if you haven't already;

If the phone has been turned off, this will not work.
You will need to enter the PIN.
If your device have a custom recovery installed aka TWRP you can pull your data from there, just power on your device pressing power button + volume up button, connect it to your PC and you'll see your data like a pen drive (MTP actually)

Then your device is not encrypted or you don't have a lock screen set up.
There is no way to extract your data from a smashed screen phone, maybe you can go to some repair shop and ask the staff to replace the screen without factory reset.
