[Poll and Discussion] HTC One M8 or Galaxy S5?

Which of the two do you prefer and why? I'd like to hear especially from those who have used both phones. I've used the M8 and was quite impressed, but haven't used the S5 yet.

M8 hands down. Yes I have used both. If you really care so much about the camera, buy a digital camera. Yes the S5 has a far better camera. If that isn't of concern m8 is the clear winner in my opinion. The galaxy phones feel like they are made by playskool. You just can't beat the premium feel of an HTC device. Not on the feel but just overall quality & craftsmanship. It's such an easy pick for me. Sure there are some things I would have changed but last years m7 & the m8 are amazing.

Better specs, better camera, removable battery, water-resistance. If I were choosing phones based on looks, I'd be posting on MacRumors right now.

The main thing luring me to the M8 is the superior UI, and ART. Also, if the S5 doesn't ship with ART compatibility I won't even consider it (display models don't have the option). M8 also survived an hour underwater in some video I watched. On specs, I find the small difference negligible.

Thanks! I guess they disabled it on display models. Now I may give some consideration to the S5

I was hoping Samsung made a premium build phone as some of the innovative software is good but unfortunately they went with same old cheap band aid look plastic finish. Terrible but love their marketing almost convinces you to buy the damn thing even though it's plastic.
Camera is the only thing which I prefer the s5 over m8. Every other dept it's m8 looks feel and Looks again. Design finish and sense love it.

I hear ya. Unfortunately, there aren't any S5 displays in my area so I can't give them a good comparison. I've heard people say it's WAY better than they expected though.

S5, no question about it. I'm not going to pick a device simply because it's made out of metal. That's a bonus, sure...but when it's completely lacking in every other aspect, the metal body doesn't make up for it.

Well if you plan on flashing a ROM, the build is about all that matters (and camera). I still thing Sense 6 is ahead of TouchWiz though.

If i used the phone without protection i would agree with you but since I usually just buy a ballistic case or something to protect against falls (I drop it quite often, otherwise I wouldn't buy a case) I would get the plastic finish feel anyways. S5 for me

Ok so I went to a local AT&T store and used the M8 and S5 one in each hand for about 20 minutes tonight, and this is what I noticed (in a pros-cons list of each). Note I am 6'3" with pretty large hands. I didn't test the cameras, as 1. I don't use smartphone cameras and 2. We all know the S5's is way better. This is more subjective stuff with build, feel, and UI.
S5 Advantages:
-SCREEN!! The AMOLED screen on the S5 was absolutely gorgeous. I put the setting on "professional photography" or something like that, and everything looked absolutely superb. The M8's screen was also nice, but I liked the color on the AMOLED display much better (especially the whites).
-The lock button on the right side was very natural and comfortable to press. Much more so than on the M8.
-White model felt nice in the hand (not an advantage, but notable)
-Haptic feedback. This is probably adjustable, but the S5's was shorter and not as "deep". The M8 shook a little much for me.
M8 Advantages:
-Length and on screen buttons. With the S5, I found myself having to reach my thumb down a little too far to reach the buttons. On the M8, the buttons were in a perfect spot and were very pleasant to use.
-Motion gestures. It was very nice and natural to unlock the phone by swiping up when the screen was off.

Not really -- The S5 has better specs in just about every single category compared to the M8.
-Weighs less
-Faster CPU
-Bigger/better display
-Better camera
-IP67 cert (Water/dust resistant)
-Better battery, which is also removable
-USB 3.0
The only thing that I feel the M8 has over the S5 is the metal body. Aside from that, I don't see the reason to pick a clearly inferior device. Of course, both are great devices, regardless. However, when compared, why would you go with the inferior device, especially if you planned to upgrade anyway?

Everyone who is dissing on Samsung for the plastic really needs to try it out in person. I used to have an M7, so I know how amazing that and the M8 feel. But the S5 is nothing like the S3 or S4. It feels more like my Moto X than anything, minus the rubberized coating on the X. Very solid.

The CPU speed difference is so small it's most likely irrelevant in day to day use. Sense is less intensive, so they'll most likely run the same in day to day usage. Besides, I didn't notice a difference when I tried them. The other things are nice hardware bonuses, but the software and feel are more important to me. This is where I think HTC edges out Samsung (oh, and BoomSound). That, and I have no need for a better camera, IP67 (never get my phones wet/dusty), and USB 3.0 (I rarely hook up to the PC and if so only for flashing). So for my personal tastes, this leaves Samsung's hardware advantages at the battery (the M8's is also pretty killer though), screen, and weight. The M8's overall feel is just a little bit better for me. Not having to stretch so far for the buttons is big, and a skinnier body makes 1 handed use easier. To each their own, but for me the One just edges out the S5 (for now). There's still 4 days before my M8 ships, so I very well could change to the S5, but this is where I'm at right now.

depends on what you consider "a lot better". The 805 would be a nice bump in battery life and would make things snappier with a QHD screen. Would also see improvement in gaming. Im sure if the G3 came with the 805 people would be complaining less about the battery life. Also it really depends on how the software is utilized with the 805 to see real differences. Considering how bloated touchwiz is i doubt itd feel like a huge difference in performance.

I completely agree. I almost passed on the G3 to wait for the Note 4, but I'm glad I didn't. If I had, I'd be going to get the G3 today.

The Note Edge looks like it will be a complete nightmare for case makers or anyone that is prone to dropping their phone.

IMO the biggest improvement, beside GPU, is faster memory (2x900mHz, if I recall correctly)

That too. In a world full of useless gimmicks, I think Samsung just took the cake with this one...

I quite like the note 4. Just wish they changed the design a bit more, flush back camera and got rid of the physical home button.

I too had a lot of thoughts if I chose poorly by buying the G3 instead of waiting for the note 4 (speaking as a previous note 2 owner)
But c'mon there is nothing special about the note 4...legendary battery life on the note serious?
The note 4 had a 3200mAh battery(Same as the note3) and it will sip the juice more than ever thanks to the 2k screen..so no longer "legendary" battery life...it left with the note 2
Camera? Though I rarely use my phone for photos ( Prefer my much more loved Nikon D7000 )..but the G3 does it all and well.. i do occasionally take some photos in case I don't have my photography gear with me
And the results are pretty good for a phone...
Software?please keep me away from TW
S Pen? I rarely used it with my note 2
CPU / GPU bump? I don't use phone for intense gaming or so...and I believe the 801 SoC is more than enough

Well.. I keep wondering what exactly more people want from a smartphone.
How different can it be? If Samsung increases the size, it looses it's pocket-ability and market share. If they use even more premium materials, it becomes fragile (glass) and weight increases. These would be downgrades.
Design: It's basically a block with a huge screen. There's not many ways you can re-design that. Samsung did add metal to the edges to give a premium feel without weight increases and I think they have done a decent job at that. Remove the front buttons? Sure.. I'm sure many support the idea. But don't forget.. it's Samsung's signature design to have a centre physical button and many people buy Samsung because of that. Just like how Apple has their round button. The advantage is that you get more screen space too.
The dimpled back of the S5 received more negativity and they decided to keep the faux leather texture from N3. Nothing wrong about it. Miles better than glossy materials imho.
Internals: The CPU bump from 800 2.3Ghz to 805 2.7GHhz is very decent. You can't find anything better out there now (maybe except the NV's K1). A 64bit CPU won't do the end-user any good at this point. The screen bump from FHD to QHD is also expected and goes very nicely with the big screen. However, I have to admit that the curved screen edges are kinda sucky, esp if you're gonna apply an SP.
Software: Seriously.. I think the new screen grab function is very neat. No need saving individual pics or text before sharing. The photo taking from notes and handwriting detection is pretty nifty.. not to mention it does keystone correction! Also, a screen grab of a bunch of text will end up as ASCII when you paste it. It does OCR on the fly. Multi tasking is a step closer to windows-like. These are real new features.. not gimmicks unlike the smart-stay, smart-wave, smart hover or whatever.
In summary, I am pretty pleased with the Note4's offering. Beware, I am not a Samsung fanboy. The S5 was a crappy upgrade from the S4, being bigger, uglier and all.. but I would say the Note4 is a decent upgrade from Note3. :good:
Will I be switching to N4? No. I don't need the stylus nor the bigger screen size. Not needing such a device doesn't mean it's bad :silly:

After having a G2 and Flex which I liked both phones a lot I was going to wait for the Note 4. I just wanted something different. I played with a G3 and had to get it. So I'm glad I didn't wait for Note 4. Have a Jump to use and might try iPhone 6 though. Lol

Maybe if Samsung stopped downgrading devices at the same time.
The Note 4 is slightly taller and heavier than the Note 3
They removed USB 3.0 and went back with USB 2.0
The speaker is now on the back instead of the bottom
I agree that there is only so much that can be done, but look at the G3 for instance. They made the bezels as thin as possible compared to other phones, since it's not water resistant like the S5 I don't know what their excuse is for not making the bezels smaller. The battery is basically the same size, every other Note model has had a significant improvement in battery capacity, plus with QHD it's going to be worse just like the G3 is to the G2.
Overall Samsung makes a device that has good specs, but in a shell that is not pleasing to look at and easy to forget, with an OS that is full of so many half-baked features that since they don't work consistently, no one ever uses them. They need to get some new design engineers and take a page out of Apple's attention to every little detail, and either fix or remove most of their features so they actually work.

so tell us what you think about it, the feel on the hand, how fragile does it look and feel (is it slippery like the sony phones with glass, grippy?) , hows the performance of the camera, screen, battery, etc.

It's only been half a day but my early impressions are as follows,
-Fingerprint scanner is wicked fast.
-Screen is beautiful
-It is fast fast fast. I love Samsung devices and I admit that lag was always an issue. I have not been able to slow it down yet. Really I havent. Lol. Even the recent app switcher is fast.
-Like the themeing a lot. I can't wait for more themes.
-Feels good on the hand. The edge does make it a bit different to hold but I love the curved screen. Makes using the phone a pleasure.
-I have only taken a couple pictures but they turned out great. More on that later.
I'm sure I'll have more as the days pass..

I played with the phone in a T mobile store. For about 20 minutes battery was down to 93% from 100%.,Power hungry. Could you guys confirm?
Also I found the browser cannot hide the status bar hence no full screen browsing. Please also confirm this?
S6 edge in the bestbuy which is unbranded has no ability to sort the menu alphabetically. But T mobile edge has an option to sort.

You're correct on the status bar. Too early to know on the battery. The option to sort might have come in the software update that dropped today. Not sure though.

Yup, that an Edge, and damn did she slam that hard! Good to know it can survive what she just did, lol.

From a performance point of view there is no doubt in my mind the Edge is going to be great, the only doubt is battery life... I realise its a bit early for conclusions yet but once people have used their phones for a week or so, its the questions that everyone wants answering. Everyone's use patterns are different but as long as I can make it through a heavyish day ok, I'll be happy with that.

It's battery is only 7% less in capacity than S5, so I see no reason why battery life would be extremely different. The screen has higher res, but CPU is much more power efficient.

Yes...still, I'd rather yes some real numbers from someone who actually has the phone. We know very little about its battery performance yet, and I have seen mixed reviews with some saying its good and others poor.
I should just say that I have the phone pre ordered and I'm looking forward to getting it, battery is the only doubt I have...I'd just like to see some numbers and I think most other people would too.

I have pre-ordered it as well, but it is still 2 weeks before shipping. We will all see in due time. People in the US are already getting theirs, so we should have some info within a week as batteries start working normally after a few charges.

Also could you guys confirm available free memory?

I went to Best Buy yesterday to get a look at the S6 edge. Needless to say, I was very impressed. Touchwiz seems lightning fast compared to 4.3 on my S4. The shortcuts and ease of access really convinced me to buy this (when green comes along). The edge display looks absolutely amazing and does, in fact, feel more immersive. I love the metal frame and the new headphone jack location. Basically, this thing looks and feels all-around perfect. The black looks BLACK in person, whereas online it gave me the belief that it was a deep-blue. Don't know if I want to settle for the white 32GB or wait a month or two in hopes of the green appearing.

Eh, you forgot to mention that the screen was actually more efficient, too. Not only is it 14nm, the screen is like 23% more efficient than the screen on the Note 4, iirc.

I was not aware the screen would be more efficient with that much higher resolution, but that is a good thing to know as well. Might mean all this whining about smaller battery size is just for the sake of whining.

Thanks for your answers guys. Today again I walked into Best buy and T mobile stores to do my research more. What I found,
Battery: Yesterday when I played with the phone I suspected it to be Power hungry. But I think I should take it back. Battery is ok not bad after all. I am comparing with my LG G2(has a good battery, 3000mah) and I measured the time it takes to drop every %. S6 takes a little more time than the G2 to drop which tells me the battery is good. Also the picture below. I don't have an S5 so I can't really compare with that. I played a couple of games that were installed on the phone and the battery is still ok. This is by no means a scientific way of measuring, neverthless I wanted to share this with you guys.
Although I have chargers at home, car and work still a good battery(if not the best) gives a sense of confidence. and satisfaction that I have the best phone irrespective of all the breath taking features. Don't you agree?? S6 may not disappoint I believe.
Browser/Browsing: Browsing is a breeze. No sense of lag anywhere. But the status bar doesn't hide which I assume is a part of Lollipop. I would be curious to see if a dev can come up with a mod. A full screen immersive browsing on the S6 's beautiful screen would be super cool.
Youtube/Video: Flawless like its predecessors. Nothing special to mention.
Music: Flawless sound like its predecessors. No distortion. Sound is very clean with the headphones. I listen to a lot of Music and sound quality is very important for me. When I played the music on speaker I felt some vibration I wonder what that is??? I wonder if it is the speaker giving the vibration.
Menu:Arrangement of the apps in the menu is nice and simple although I would prefer the icons to be a little smaller. T mobile phones come with an option to sort alphabetically. AT&T don't have the phone for display yet(Slackers:crying so can't tell. All in all I like this new menu. No complaints.
GPS: I didn't spend a lot of time here but I thought it locked quick enough. Nothing special and no complaints.
Screen Quality : I thought the screen is much better than S5 (in the store) and on par with the note 4. But my G2 has a different color temperature which I believe make whites look a little bluish where as S6 whites are yellowish. To me both are ok. But I really have to admit the additional pixels on S6 make no difference in picture quality (S6 vs G2). Really a 1080p screen would have been enough. To clarify I am not complaining, just my opinion. Viewing angles are good unlike G2 (LG's for that matter).
I have to tell you, normal people passing by with no phone knowledge would stop by and take a glimpse at the edge screen, They all seem to like it. Seems like edge is getting all the attention it deserves.
Build/Design: This is where S6 edge outshines every other phone in the market. In my opinion, till date this the best design ever period. I have seen some complaints about finger prints. It is not bad after all. Looks like white takes less finger prints than others. Excellent build quality and feels solid in hands. Thums up.
Single handed use: It can be used single handed with no issues. Menu is set up for single hand use which I really like. Although my hand is not very big it fit nicely in my hand. Not sure about the non-edge S6. Should be the same.
Speed This is one thing that is very crucial. All android phones I used so far tend to be fast initially but as I go adding/deleting apps and other files phone tends to get laggy. It really gets on my nerves. But even as a brand new phone they stutter at times. But with S6 it is blazing fast. No lag anywhere (at least I did not see). App drawer is a little slow to open. Samsung probably configured it to be slower on purpose. Some might misunderstand it to be a lag, just a heads up. Speed speed speed is what it is.
Camera: I need not specially tell you about the camera. There are expert reviews which claim this to be the best camera. Flawless. Double press on the menu opens the camera in split seconds which is very impressive.
I care less about the heart rate sensor so did not test it. Although I care about finger print scanner I could not test it because it is not my phone.
This is a big leap forward not just for Samsung but for android as a whole.
I was disappointed about the battery yesterday but liked it today and took some time to test all the features. I like the phone, will get one. White Color 32gb. AT&T.

I think he meant the true amount of RAM available. (Should be less than 3 GB)

Status bar maybe due to Lollipop. Its present on my Pure Edition Moto X and my Atrix HD running CM12.

Yes, this is the problem. Most device forums have one roll-up thread for user reviews. We don't need a new thread each time someone buys the device. It clutters the forum and makes finding information difficult.

This thread has an ambiguous title and seems to be only for the OP's benefit, so it keeps sinking to the bottom as people ignore it and start another thread unnecessarily.

I have a question here :
When popping up Aircommand menu does it works with finger while clicking on any app or not ?

But how is it in the hand without any cover? Is it not slippery as....?

Advice is needed whether to buy Samsung Galaxy Note 5 or Samsung s6 edge. All suggestions are welcome

The S6 edge is great if you want more looks and it's a better party trick kind of phone. The Note 5 is much more functional, has the S-Pen, bigger screen, a battery that will actually last a full day, and an extra gig of ram (meaning less aggressive app killing). If you want a party trick type phone, get the edge. If you want a functional phone, get the Note 5.

My only real design issue involves point 3 in this thread by @zeesh86. I don't consider myself a fatfinger (maybe just like a little sausagy-fingered), but I was opening, moving, and deleting apps regularly on accident. I'm blaming it on the rear curved sides and smaller distance between the screen and side of the phone. Less bulk means my grip overlaps the sides and my fingers touch the screen. I ended up having to lock the apps (Nova Launcher) because it was such an oft occurring issue; however, since adding a case (and not even a bulk one) it's no longer a problem.

Pros
- big display with good colors
- powerful CPU (altho i read it gets hot and performance is questionable)
- Stylus
- nice camera (http://echostorms.net/camera.png)
- fast charging
Cons
- no removable SD card
- no removable battery
- locked bootloader (verizon and AT&T), making it difficult to root, and prevents fun stuff
- heavy KNOX hardware
- uses 75%+ of the 4GB RAM when nothing is running (just like the Galaxy S6)
- advertised as octa-core, but actually 2 quad core CPUs. Probably because one is at 1.5GHz while the other is 2.1GHz, bigger numbers = higher sales, so hide the fact that one is slower
unfortunate to say, but iOS > Android
I could probably come up with more pros/cons, but these first that came to mind.

Own it. Love it. I've never been happier in a mobile device.
Screen is gorgeous, sound is loud for a cell phone, the feel in the hand is great as well. The curved back makes it easy to hold. If you don't have your thumb centered the fingerprint scanner won't read. Fast charging is amazing too. Have 15 minutes? Boom Extra 20-25% of juice. I've noticed that this phones battery life is better than my previous Note 4, 3, 2 and any other device I've owned. Coupled with the fast charging and wireless charging it's a breeze. If I don't remember to charge my phone overnight--no problem. Charge it real quick while I get ready for work and I'm usually at 100%

That can be remedied by moving your thumb around a bit when registering your fingerprint. Sure you can't just use the corner of your thumb, but as long as your covering most of the button, it shouldn't matter whether it's centered or not if you've recorded enough of the print.

I didn't want to create a new thread for this but don't know exactly where to express this sentiment.
Today my brother bought an AT&T Galaxy S6. It's still on 5.0.2. That really worries me for my AT&T Note 5. How long does AT&T take to update their devices? How long has 5.1 been available while a flagship device on AT&T is stuck on 3+ month year old software? Will we ever see Marshmallow on AT&T?

AT&T notoriously takes longer than other carriers to send updates. Been like that for ages.

My list of Ps and Cs coming from an iPhone 6+ and Oneplus One
Pros:
-Battery life has been very good
-Camera takes quality photos and video
-Voice calls are clear
-Phone has a relatively small footprint, so the size is not unwieldy
-s pen works very well, no issues
-s pen integration with the note is a very cool feature and high up on my nice-to-haves
-Screen is gorgeous and easy to read in daylight, I've compared to the iPhone 6+ screen for fun and text looks sharper and most pictures and video look sharper.. there are times the iPhone looks better for certain games that I'm sure were not optimized for the higher resolution
-FAST CHARGING IS REAL and is freaky fast!!!
Cons (very small issues):
-Occasional lag when scrolling... after using Oneplus One and iPhone 6+ it's hard not to notice a few glitches here and there when scrolling pages, especially pages with a lot of rich media; but it's hardly noticeable and I've already gotten used to it, disabling some of the bloatware definitely helped, I'm confident of that.
-Bluetooth is inconsistent when connecting to my Samsung soundbar, which sucks because it's the only device in my house that can't connect. I need to play around a little bit to figure out why.
-Bloatware, bloatware, bloatware
Overall, if I was asked to rate this phone I would say 10/10 compared to other phones in the same class.

Actually, Samsung do some innovation on Note 5. I love the glass body very much. Fast wireless charger inside was truly a great progress, which made me want more!!

My mistake of buying Note 5
Oh Lord how I miss having an SD card.
I've never had problems with deleting old stuff off of my phone this is the first time I had to delete stuff of my phone.
On bright side- it helps me stay on top of things but now I gotta continuously monitor storage.
Even now i'm down to free space 2 gb lol
Apparently S7 has sd card in it again- so I'm guessing Note 6 will have it too. Not sure if I'd get it or not but it's nice to see Samsung is going back on track.
What do you guys miss?

Oh Lord I miss the sunlight, it's been a long depressing winter here.
On the brighter side 110gb on onedrive , 17gb on Google drive, plus you can use a OTG drive. My Note 5 has 64gb too !
I miss my dog too, he died and my wife has left me What am i gonna do now?

Device Comparison: Galaxy S7 (Exynos G930FD) vs. OnePlus One

I know, this seems like a no-brainer: Two-year old Chinese upstart’s first device vs. the 7th generation Samsung Galaxy flagship phone. But here’s why: I sold my S4 and skipped the S5 & S6 because the OnePlus was that good, and back then the motto “Flagship Killer” was no exaggeration. And after having the S7 for a week now, I realize that I could have been pretty content pressing on with my OPO—it’s still that good. But I wouldn’t go back, and here’s why:
DESIGN
When I unboxed the OPO it blew me away. The unboxing experience was amazing for a $350 Chinese device, from the quality of the packaging materials, quality of the accessories (even the SIM tray ejector tool!) and the device itself looked amazing. I had unboxed the S3 and S4—this was better by 100 miles! The S7 unboxing experience wasn’t nearly as good as the OPO, just meh... another typical Samsung box with a cool flap that has a magnetic lock.
But when I put the two devices side-by-side, the OPO feels well... merely good whereas before it felt amazing. The S7 takes it up several notches and is absolutely stunning to look at and stunning to touch! If they made a Braille version for blind people, I know they’d love it!
S7 clearly wins over the OPO which is saying a lot.
DURABILITY
I don’t use cases, usually don’t use screen protectors and I don’t drop my phones. In two years, my OPO has taken one fall from the seat of my Tacoma onto rough pavement. That fall merely scuffed a corner before the phone landed face-first on the glass with no discernible scratches. If that had happened to the S7...
In favor of the S7, it has an IP68 rating which the OPO doesn’t. But, since I won’t treat even my S7 like a bath toy, the best moisture protection available is something both devices have—a careful owner.
OPO wins over the S7, which is totally expected. Don’t drop a glass & metal sandwich expecting great things!
DISPLAY
I’m fine with anything above 1080P. I have extremely good near-sighted vision and can occasionally discern pixels on the OPO, though it’s not a bother. So the S7 earns a hollow victory on this front if you ask me.
But I’ve missed SuperAMOLED, and the S7 reminds me why—the deep blacks extracted from a nearby black hole, better color saturation, and yawning viewing angles that are tough to beat.
Both are capable of great color accuracy. My July 2014 OPO doesn’t have the yellow band issue found in many early production models.
In favor of the OPO, it does have good enough viewing angles, but the best thing is that there is very little color shift (none?) at even deep viewing angles. As soon as an AMOLED screen goes off-center, the colors shift blue-green. Not so with the LCD on the OPO, though there is a significant drop in brightness.
S7 easily over OPO, though LCD does have its advantages.
AUDIO
A weakness of the OPO but a strength of the S7. The DAC (at least in the Exynos version) of the S7 is great and the speaker is by far better.
S7 over the OPO.
BATTERY LIFE
No contest here: The OPO is better than the S7 by a long-shot (maybe 25-35%) with a similar usage pattern. I know this isn’t very scientific, but I’m on the charger a lot more with the S7. It’s DEFINITELY better than the S3, S4 and Nexus 5 I had before the OPO. Both devices charge really fast, but the S7 is a bit faster.
OPO clearly over the S7, but the S7 is good enough for me.
CAMERA
Absolutely no contest here either. In low light, the S7 absolutely kills and buries the OPO. In high contrast situations, the HDR on the S7 is also miles beyond what the OPO is capable of. The fast focus on the S7 makes the OPO camera seem like jurassic technology. Only in great lighting during the day are the two phones comparable, but even then it's the S7. This is one major reason that I upgraded. I've attached some comparison pictures below. The S7 pictures are the first 4, the OPO the last.
S7 over the OPO in an unfair contest, like pitting the 2007 Dolphins against the 2007 Patriots.
PERFORMANCE
I don't care about benchmarks. I’m also not much of a gamer, so I don’t really care about frame rates, except that something in TouchWiz is crippling games with 2D graphics. I’ve looked under battery saver settings, Game Launcher and Game Tools, enabled “Force GPU rendering” under developer options, installed Samsung Game Tuner, all with no joy. Hopefully a future update will address this issue. The power is there, but something deep in TouchWiz is throttling it.
The S7 loads apps faster. I’ve also noticed that even though encrypted, the S7 runs circles around the OPO in USB transfer speed.
S7 over the OPO.
DEVELOPMENT
Samsung is trying to make it so that we can’t use the words “development” and “Galaxy” in the same sentence. On the other hand, the OPO’s development scene is as prolific as the bacteria culture flourishing on a 1,000 Riel bill that’s been passed around open-air markets in Cambodia for the last 10 years. If that makes no sense to you, let’s just say it’s on par with any Nexus device out there!
Since the only S7 that can be modded is the Exynos version, I may get some custom TouchWiz ROMs in the future.
No contest here, nor will it ever be—only the OPO showed up to this fight.
THEMES
I’m not a huge themer, but being able to apply an AOSP-like Marshmallow theme over TouchWiz is a great bonus. Nova Launcher puts the icing on the cake.
If this is your thing, both are good. Maybe a themer can chime in and add more.

TL;DR
In my non-journalist and non-scientific completely subjective opinion, they both win and I'll be keeping both.
The OPO beats the S7 in unboxing experience, durability, battery life and development, an area which is as close to night (S7) and day (OPO) as possible.
The S7 beats the OPO in display, audio, camera, design, performance—basically every category relevant to the operation and use of the device except battery life and durability.
The bottom line is that I love the S7 and see myself keeping it for a long, long time. But, neither is the OPO for sale—I’ll be keeping it to satisfy my ROM flashing addiction.
If you’re thinking of moving from the OPO to the S7 and have the coin to do so, I think you should. Just make sure that you have something beside the S7 if you need a platform for flashing/customizing.

I have the S7EDGE and owned an opo for 1.5yrs. Its no contest, even battery life is miles ahead on the S7EDGE. All in all, the S7 is the most complete device on the market to date

1. camera
2. smaller form factor.
In the meanwhile I put my S7 in a spigen thin case, which adds better grip and increases the overall size minimally.

I don't have a OPO, but I guess in terms of smoothness it's like a nexus device: butter smooth. How do you guys the OPO smoothness to S7, in apps like chrome, YouTube, playstore... Is the S7 as smooth as the OPO?

I also made the switch the same time from a Opo as you. I really wish i didn't though. I don't like the edges (inadvertent taps), that its not rootable, sensibility issues, bloatware etc. I also had to get a glass protector, normally i don't do this but it scratches really really easily. So i don't like the feel of it. I would have liked to have waited for something better to have come out. My Opo lasted about year too. Normally my phones last longer but the audio insert broke on my phone and couldn't listen to music with out holding the cable in. The 2 for one special seemed like a great deal but too many draw backs.

Under Settings > Battery > App power saving and Battery > Battery usage > More > Optimize battery usage.

I got the international dual-SIM version (G930FD) so mine is rootable and had no carrier bloat.

I would have preferred to buy the Galaxy S7 with sandstone backcover and 64GB internal storage. I don't notice any inadvertent taps any more. Maybe it's the spigen case or it was fixed with the april update, I don't know. I don't have carrier bloatware, only the samsung bloatware (plus facebook), but most of it can be deactivated. If I feel the need to mess again with recovery and custom roms, I would turn on my opo again. In the meanwhile I am just using my Galaxy S7.

I too have switched from my opo to s7. Now that I think back, I miss having a 5.5 inch screen and the stock Android feels. As much as I dislike touchwiz, I was bought over by the awesome camera

Just ordered the Galaxy S7 yesterday. I too am coming from a OPO, which I'm not handing down to my wife. It has really served me well over the past two years. The things I'm most looking forward to is the smaller forfactor. 5.5" is just too large and one hand use is nearly impossible unless I'm running LMT launcher.
I'm getting the Exynos version and this time around I'm not planing on rooting. I've done that to every phone and tablet I've had since my HTC Wildfire. But this time I'm actually looking forward to just using the phone as it is. I've grown a bit tired of the stock android feel. To me it's just boring and bland, so it'll be great to once again being back on a UI that has more of complete feel to it that stock android (I know almost everybody will dissagree with me on this).
I feel like the rooting scene hasn't got much to offer anymore. "Back in the days" there where a lot to be gained from rooting. I overclock my Desire S from 1 ghz to 1.7 ghz and you could really feel the difference. Now the most used custom roms on the OPO underclock from 2.5 to 1.9 ghz, because the processor is fast and powerful enough at that freq.
All in all, I'm looking forward to getting my S7 with all it's pros and cons. Also I've ordered the Spiegen Neo Hybrid Case, 'cause I totally agree on OP views on durability.

BTW, wanted to add that the S7 charges crazy fast, even with the OPO'a charger.
