Motorola - Potential Nexus 6 Issue - Nexus 6 General

Been emailing Motorola UK regarding the charger issues with my Nexus 6, and having dealing with for past month I got the following from them today.
I am sorry to say that at the current moment in time it has been brought to our attention that there is a potential issue with the Nexus 6. We are working hard to verify and, if need be, rectify this issue and deliver this solution to our customers.

So looks like finally they know there are possible problems

This would be a lot more helpful if you told us what the potential issue was...

Lack of compensation?

I have noticed that when the N6 is on charge, once it reaches 100% and left on charger, the battery starts discharging approx 1% every hour.
I only noticed this when my alarm was going off and when looked at battery usage it was saying 94% but nothing using it - installed GSAM and noticed that once fully charged it starts discharging even while on charge. If I remove charger and re-insert it starts charging again as normal.
Has anyone else noticed this issue. I have contacted Motorola to see what they say, but they are none the wiser and just think it may be a feature of the device/charger but not sure and said to test with another charger.

That was all I got back from Motorola after telling them I wanted someone to take ownership of problem.
I'm not sure of what they are referencing to, it could be linked to the issue I have logged with them or something else. @kf2m nothing to do with compensation, its to do with purchasing a product that is defective and under UK SOGA trying to get it sorted, but reseller has not done much about it so have been speaking to Motorola.

All phones do this. When sitting on a charger after hitting 100% they stop taking a charge until the battery drains to some arbitrary level - usually 95% or even 90% so it isn't sitting at 100% and accepting current.

There's no need to splinter this discussion into 2 threads. That's just a canned response from Motorola anyway.

Battery 'Life' tricks

I read about this on a professional site but cannot remember where. Here is what you do:
"To help with battery life you can do these steps EXACTLY:
1. Turn your device ON and CHARGE the device for 8 hours or more
2. UNPLUG the device and TURN the phone OFF and CHARGE for 1 hour
3. UNPLUG the device TURN ON and wait 2 minutes and then TURN OFF and CHARGE for another hour
Your battery life should double. We have tested this on our devices and other agents have seen a major difference as well"
I am still waiting for my phone but I will try this as soon as I get it. I am wondering if this trick applies only to new phones or not? If someone will like to test this please go ahead and give us some feedback. Thanks
no offence but can you tell me how you can charge the device which has been charging for 8 hours? to my knowledge, there are circuits that avoids over-charging in these kind of devices?
You got a point. Like I said, I took this off the net but cannot remember where.
Check out this article: http://blog.gsmarena.com/samsung-i9000-galaxy-s-full-battery-test-ready-–-up-with-the-best/
It's impossible to manage 84h on single charge Or it is possible when you charge phone to 100% then leave it on your desk and don't even touch it.
Im pretty sure I could get up to a week of battery if i didnt use the phone at all. Over night the battery drains 1% max.

for me, wifi uses up 65% of the power lol.
I like to ask, how long have you all had your phones? I think the longer or often you charge your phones the better the drainage power.

Don't believe everything you read on the internet..
When I was working at an Apple Premium reseller, I nearly exploded with laughter every day at some of the ridiculous rumors I heard, which were obviously wrong to anyone who sold them, but plenty of major sites were reporting they were likely..
Even now, Kevin Rose (the genius who said that he had seen the iPhone and it had 2 batteries) is still saying crap (which 2 years after I left still seems wrong to me), and every site is STILL reporting it as fact.
A lot of the stuff you read on the internet is untrue. This might be a bit true because of battery calibration and such, but I honestly do question it..

Agreed. After all, if these ridiculous battery "tricks" worked at all, then the physics behind them would be built into the chargers by the manufacturers. Unless you think they are crippling the battery on purpose for no reason? Makes no sense.

A warning to all those buying a Nexus S (Screen and battery problems)

I thought I'd share some hopefully helpful information with you guys after having to have 2 swap outs of my Nexus S after getting it on launch day.
I had done an awful lot of reading prior to getting my Nexus to make sure I was pretty clued up about any potential launch bugs which seem to plague a number of handsets these days.
The first thing I noticed with my first phone was the unusually fast battery drain and long charge times, I could hardly go through daylight hours without my phone needing charge (Battery indicator showing orange or red). The following night I left the phone with 55% charge and went to sleep. When I woke up the phone was off, strange I thought; turns out it had eaten the rest of the battery over night.
The final straw came when I reset the phone to default settings (thinking it was a rogue app causing the drain) and it still ate the battery within a day. At this point I knew something was up, especially as reviewers were commenting that the battery seemed considerably better than a lot of other Android handsets.
I decided to take it back to Best Buy to get a swap out, long story short the sales rep. tested the battery and told me that it was defective. He then said he would swap out just the handset and battery with another unit, great I thought!
My relief was soon disturbed when I realised something wasn't right with the screen on my new handset. Not only was the screen a pee yellow colour (compared with the cool temperature of the original) there was also significant banding within the grey area of the the pull down notification tray. These problems had also been mentioned on the Engadget review and even if they hadn't I'm pretty sure I still would have noticed it straight away regardless.
After another trip back to Best Buy and a reluctant second swap out on their part, I have what seems like a fully working handset with a good battery and decent AMOLED panel.
I don't know what's happening with Samsung's QC or whether they have large tolerances for their panels, but I would have thought that they would have been able to iron a lot of this out having already launched the Galaxy S series.
A slightly long post but I hope this at least saves some of you the hassle I've been through to get a decent handset. This isn't the first time it's happened either, I had problems with my launch day iPhone 4 with the mic not working.
One thing's for sure, I'm going to be far more vigilant when buying my next handset.
also test ur buttons because they can be loose and the back button sometimes has problems
nothing new for samsung QA
Unfortunately, having come from the epic, this seems par for the course for sammy..I'd high hopes Google would counter this, but I guess not. My first and only ns is wonderful, though I ordered online and it seems the majority of complaints are coming from those that ordered at the store..coincidence?

Sadly, Google != Apple, they don't produce their own hardware. Depending on Samsung, with their known ****ty QA is a risk I'm sure they weighed.
I ordered my NS online and have none off theses issues! Actually my battery life is AWESOME. 16 hours straight between charging. I love it!

3G supported band
Guys,
Some thing out of the topic, but i need to ask is that is there any sort of 3G band limitation in US version of NS? My friend in Canada told me that currently all devices are coming only with AWS support for 3G which is supported by limited number of Cellular Operators.
Any ideas?

Having the same battery problem, please help
I am also having the same battery problem. It seems like the battery drains 1% per minute. I need to keep it charging all the time or it will drain in about 90 minutes. And it takes 8-9 hours to charge it to 100%.
Problem is I can't just take it back to Best Buy since I live overseas and a friend brought it to me from the US. So now what do I do?
1. Is it the battery or the phone? If it is the battery then I can just replace the battery, but I can't find anywhere online to buy the same battery? Any ideas?
2. If it is the phone, is there anything I can do w/o having to send it back to the USA?
Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks but this seller won't ship outside the USA. I found a bunch of similar ones on eBay, but they are all 1440 milliamps and not 1500 milliamps.
Not sure if the one on Amazon is 1440 or 1500.

Charge for first use?

Hi.
I've seen lots of advice in several different ways about charging new tech when you get it.
So I thought I'd try a poll to see what the general consensus is.
1) Charge until light is green before turning it on the first time?
2) Turn on without precharge, but then run completely flat before charging
3) It's a Li-ion battery and it makes no difference
Thanks

Many people will tell you it doesnt matter but I know from experience that it does in fact make a difference. When I got my phone (mt4g) I starte using it right away without charging it, everything seemed fine I had an issue with the screen so I exchanged it and got a new one. This one I charged first for a few hours before even turning it on and it did make a difference. my battery seemed to be holding a charge for longer. When I got another battery I read they recommend charging it fully off for at least 8 hours then when you do power it on let it run down all the way. Do that for the first 5 charges and it will help your battery health in the long run.
Another example is my friend got two of the same phone one for him and one for his gf. He started using his as soon as he got out of the store, hers he charged for her because he didnt see her that night. He said the phones are pretty much set up identically, same software, same services running etc.. and he said her battery lasts noticeably longer than his

Thanks for the input. Ya, I have heard a lot of stories like yours.
And even if it doesn't always make a difference, it's only 8 hours, so it should be worth it just to make sure, but when you've been waiting since January for an android tablet and you finally get one in April, 8 hours is forever. ha ha
Thanks
Oh, I suppose another related question is how much is fully charged? Apparently modern devices have a current regulator or something in them that stops it from charging past 95% or something? Not sure on specifics, but from what I've read. You can't charge it passed when the green light comes on anyway?
Anyone know more on this?

Many new batteries will charge to 90% or 95%, then display the light as "fully charged". They will continue to to charge to 100%, drain back down to 90%, and back and forth in order to not stick at full 100% (aka charging over night).
That being said I've heard a lot of talk about conditioning smartphone batteries etc. and for the most part I haven't seen a lot of evidence to prove that it is necessary. Lithium Ion batteries really don't need conditioning or anything as much as you'd think... that's really an old NiCad thing to do.
I did not charge mine when i first got it, the battery was already at 90% about and i simply used it for a day and a half and now i'm charging it for the first time. i regularly get new electronics devices and i never have better problems personally. battery tech has come up a ways in the last few years.
It's well known by now the Li-ion batteries do better with short, more frequent charges. It is not a good idea to run it down until dead. These batteries also do not have a "memory."
Placebo and old habits keep this myth around.

[HELP] WTF is wrong with my DOCK!!

Last night after i used my dock, I charged both my dock and tab together. This morning, my tab was fully charged and my dock is still blinking orange. I checked the dual battery widget and it had this to say:

I had the same issue, updated to ICS, and was trying to see if battery drain by leaving the dock and pad together was fixed, and it does seem better, only loose about 5%/day when totally off. Anyways I was charging them, and the same thing happened to me, tab was totally charged and dock was 0%. To get it charging, I had to undock and just charge the dock by itself. It took a good 2-3 hours but it started charging. I have read of this issue before, it seems you do not ever want your dock to get to 0%. Some people have also had success by using just the usb on a pc to the dock and trickle charge it. Anyways hope this helps and let us know if you get your dock back.
I can usually have this problem all I have to do is disconnect the doc and plug it back in

If reading is your friend, why isn't anybody here interested in the extremly easy way to solve the problem, which I posted a few threads below?
350 clicks and nobody wants to say if this worked for him?
In the german forum where I first posted it, there is already response. It works, there are no more sudden restarts, no more battery drain. It is just a flag, which isn't set correctly by ASUS and can be solved with 2 single clicks, so why wait for some huge update?... strange world
Edit: I'm sorry, if I misunderstood something. Maybe, the thread opener has some special problem with a dock which doesn't charge at all, but when I read "5000 others" I'm very sure, these "5000" have the problem, which I have had (extremely fast and full battery drain and not a dock which doesn't charge at all, so I didn't want to hijack this thread though think my hint is helpful...

My guess would be, because there have been plenty of other posts claiming to have solved the problems of the ICS update and they never work.
Yep, I know, but all the other "solutions" guess the wlan, gps, etc. policy to cause the drain. It is the display, not the radio. The screen gets black, but isn't of. So if you move your mouse, it turns on again (no deep sleep) and all the time it sucks battery.
I now have the great battery life which I have bought my transformer for, and the few people who tried it, have similar good results. So why not give this a try?
If there aren't unexpected differences in german devices to international ones, you should have the same effect, I expect.

Is your 6p affected by the early shutdown issue?

Hey all,
I'd like to get a better view on how much 6p's are affected by this issue. I really have no clue what % we're talking about. So.. Is your 6p affected by the early shutdown issue? If not, could you tell us when you've bought your phone and, if you have accubattery installed, the capacity (health) of your battery?
Thanks in advance!
Sure am, and it's died at as high as 45% and as low as 15%. Accubattery pegs the health at about 60% and I've only had the phone about 15 months. Wanted this to be the first one I kept for two years.... Not looking likely with my 2 hours of SOT.

Yeah this is really bad. Fortunately, I've got a new battery in it thanks to warranty. But now I'm really afraid to use the phone. I'm waiting on a response from Google on all this before using my phone again. I've used it after repair for a couple of days to see if the problem was fixed: it was.

It infuriates me because I love the phone and don't want to buy a new one.... But I can't have something that is going to die on me. I'm pretty pissed off with the state of Google hardware in general right now. Both the 5x and 6P are bootlooping and dying for no discernible reason, the Pixel and 6P have battery issues, although the Pixel, so far at least, doesn't seem to have them nearly as widespread. I feel like my phone is a ticking time bomb and that's really, really not cool.
Plus the supply issues with the Pixel all but rule that out as a replacement anyway.
I've owned three of the last four generations of Nexus phones, and while I was elated with the 6P when I got it, that glow has faded significantly. .

Yeah that ticking timebomb feeling is really annoying. I don't even dare to use the phone now it actually works, because I'm afraid that I'll f*ck up my new battery. I'm trying to wait for an official response from Google, but it's hard. I really want to know if some software f*ckup is causing these batteries to degrade faster.
I had the issue also. I bought mine in October 2015. Accubattery was showing the battery at 60% and was shutting down at random once it got below 40%. Google sent me a refurbished phone even though it was out of warranty. So far this one hasn't shut down early and accubattery shows 95%.
I got my phone mid February (Best Buy) last year and do not have the problem. Accubattery shows my battery health at 93% (3220mah). But I also protect my battery as much as possible with when to charge and never let my phone stay plugged in when topped off either.
Never had early shutdown. Had my 6p for a few months. Accubattery shows 99%.

Does the battery life itself seem to be better as well? Part of my problem is that with the screen on I'm looking at an obscene drain. According to accubattery my average drain with screen on is 1100ma/h. Hell it dropped two percent in the time it took me to type this.

I'm not sure it was necessary but I flashed back to stock and relocked bootloader. I didn't want to take any chances especially since they were replacing it out of warranty. Worst case I could have used Nexus protect either way. They tried to get me to do that when I called. I refused and once I mentioned the Reddit thread they agreed to replace. Saved me the $79.00 deductible.
Nope
:good::good:We have two in our family and neither one is affected. One was purchased Late 2015 and another early 2016. Both show over 95% capacity in Accubattery (mine is 97%) and I can run the battery down to 1%. Both are stock 7.1.1 one is unlocked and rooted, and the other has never been unlocked. Although I could not vote for each phone, it will be interesting to check poll results a few months down the road.

Google's official position is that the early shutdown problem and boot loop of death are both hardware issues. People are experiencing both problems on stock Marshmallow and Nougat as well as on custom ROMs.

Guess I'm making a call tomorrow then. Hope this straightens things up. Thanks!
Just as an update, I got my RMA last week and it has behaved flawlessly since. Accubattery is actually reporting 101% battery health, and It's taking a little getting used to having a phone that the battery doesn't die in two hours.
affected

Sure am, and it's died at as high as 45% and as low as 15%. Accubattery pegs the health at about 60% and I've only had the phone about 15 months. Wanted this to be the first one I kept for two years.... Not looking likely with my 2 hours of SOT.

Same story.. getting a new battery install totally solves this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fCDOfljoQY
It's annoying not to be able to easily swap in a new battery but manufacturers could prefer people feel desperate for a yearly upgrade: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/help/nexus-6p-battery-replacement-options-t3628932

I haven't had an issue since I got my RMAd device, so yeah. I even have all the same apps installed and everything and I'm still getting ten hours of mixed usage. Performance is getting a little pokey but the phone is coming up two years old soooooooooooo I'm not surprised.
