[Q] Widgets are dying - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a stock Note 3 and I'm having widget problems. After the phone has been on for a few days all the widgets die. What I mean is that they stop updating and even tapping them doesn't launch the associated app. They're just frozen.
When this happens, I can remove the widgets and add them again, but all that happens is that the outline of the widget is there and nothing loads into the widget, just a grayed out box.
What the heck is going on here? Any ideas on what is causing this to happen or suggestions on things to try to fix this? Unfortunately any troubleshooting suggestion will take days to test because that's how long it takes for the problem to crop up.
TIA

Sounds like an average case of full RAM to me. Tried clearing the RAM when it happens? (Long press Home > Pie icon > RAM > Clear RAM)

I have not tried that but I will give it a shot next time it happens.
Curious that I've never had this problem before with lower end Android phones with even more widgets running. I'd think if it was an average case of full RAM I would have experienced this in the past.
Also, I thought Android was really good at managing RAM so you're not supposed to have memory problems like this.
Anyway, appreciate the suggestion so I'll give it a shot. Just not optimistic that's the problem since I've never had this happen before I got the Note 3.

Nope. RAM is not the problem.
Right now the one widget I'm using is locked up and clearing the RAM doesn't help.
Any other ideas on how to fix this very annoying problem?

Have you tried a different launcher?

No. I'm using the stock launcher.

Going into the app manager and clearing cache and data for Touchwiz Home seems to have solved the problem.

I should point out for the benefit of anyone trying this in the future, clearing out Touchwiz Home will return your launcher back to all default settings. So any shortcuts or widgets you put on your launcher screens will be gone.
If I had known I would have taken some screenshots of my launcher screens before doing this so I could set them back up again exactly as I had them.

How to closed side list programs?

Heya is there any way to closed programs throw the side bar on android 3.2.1?
I cant closed it and it too many apps running on background and it make my tab too slow.
Please help me out
Thanks
When you are done with an app use the back button to close it, the ones that show in the bar are recent, it doesn't necessarily mean they are running.

I echo his sentiment; you usually close applications by pressing the back button several times or selecting "Quit" or similar from menu. Pressing home button or switching to another application via the recent-menu leaves the app still running. Ie. try to use the back button more often.
Also, if you wish to see actual list of running applications and be able to force quit them, then I could suggest Advanced Task Manager ( https://market.android.com/details?...1bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5hcnJvbi50YXNrTWFuYWdlciJd ) on Android Market; I have that one installed myself and it works just peachy.

this is exactly as how things should be done.. Only difference i use Advanced task killer Widget. But i set its settings to all off.. Especially Auto kill. and when ever i see there are things that decided on there own to run i just tap the widget on home screen and they are gone. You can also long tap and select what you wish to Kill. Its preference to use as to what one you use.. Just be sure it does not run in background. or it will become one of the things your trying to prevent .
Read this to understand why closing these is not unnecessary (other than for privacy reasons)
Task Killers... The Answer from Google & Developers
There are some ROMs that allow for this. However as the person above me pointed ot, its unnecessary. ICS has the built in ability to remove appps from the multitasking menu. I don't know if this suspends the app or something like that, or not.

Not neccesary with ICS
In ICS you just have to slide the aplications on the lists to the sides and they will dissapear.

anyone else noticed that even if you slide to close the app in ics if you go to running services you find the app is in fact still running? and to clarify i am talking apps that are not using outside services like updates/wifi

This is correct. Swiping away the app simply removes it from the list. I learned this when I Home buttoned out of Grand Theft Auto III, swiped to the right and it was still running in the background. Pretty much, it takes a task-killer to absolutely, positively stop an app. But, unless it's effecting your battery life, using wifi, or Bluetooth, there's not a huge need to kill apps. Android has some pretty smart algorithms to manage resources...making task killers unnecessary. You should only kill apps if you're sure they're effecting overall performance.

[Q] Help - My open/close menu is weird

I just upgraded my HD2 from Gingerbread to Jellybean 4.2.2. So far everything works great except for my open/close menu.
Here is a youtube link of what I am dealing with:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pd0ucQyyMMM&feature=c4-overview&list=UUL-MgWl4c3Iv-H1iy3YTbLA
I've installed
2.6.32_tytung_jellybean_r2
US T-mobile HD2
I've rebooted the phone many times and even tried reinstalling the ROM and I still have it.
If anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know.
Thanks.
so this is about after clicking on menu button, it launches recent apps? or about the graphics glitches?
anyway, are you using the latest version of the rom?

This is about the graphics glitches. I have it so that when I hold down my menu button it takes me to the open/close menu. I have the latest version. I just checked for an update this morning and there was none.
try to remove the live wallpaper, and check force gpu drawing and similar settings in developer options and try.

Hey! Removing the live wallpaper did the trick. I don't know where to find the developer options (in settings?) but if I check the force gpu drawing like you suggested do you think that I will be able to use live wallpaper again?

Thanks! I now have developer options! I kept trying different things and finally found that disabling HW overlays fixed it! I hope that whatever that means doesn't screw up something else.
Hey, you seem to know a lot. I was also wondering if you know how to keep auto update on for the android play store but disable it for certain apps. My wife really does not like the new update to the google navigation/maops on her stock GS3 and prefers the old. I uninstalled the update to set it back but I didn't want to turn off her auto update because I know that she will never update her apps manually. Any suggestions?
@jimvsmij sorry, i have no idea about that

Open the Play Store > Go into the app you want to disable auto-update for > hit the menu button > You should find "Auto-update", uncheck it.
Other apps will update normally while this one won't.

I saw that option earlier but I thought that unchecking the auto-update would apply to all the apps.
Thanks!

LG Stock launcher (home) reloads when clearing tasks

Hello Everybody,
I was wondering if some of you could help me.
Problem in short:
LG Stock launcher (home) reloads when clearing tasks (long pressing home + clear all backround apps)
(by reload, I mean all icons, widgets disappears for one or two seconds, and reappears again.)
My device is D802 (Int), NON-rooted
This happens every time even if I clear one small task only eg.: Settings
Can anybody suggest something how to resolve this? Thank you
Anyone?

[Q] Google Now Launcher keeps crashing

It crashes when I press the home button, not always but too often, reloading my home screen and icons.
On a Nexus 4 running Android 4.4.4 with ART runtime.
Have tried uninstall and reinstall.
Factory reset may well be a good fix candidate but would appreciate help with less radical measures if possible.
Cheers

Just use a different launcher. Google now sucks your battery life anyways since the microphone is always on.
Use Nova launcher. You can't go wrong with it.
Or MAYBE try going back to dalvik. Maybe the ART runtime is making a mess with an incompatible app. You never know...
Hope this helps.

Marshmallow issue

Is anyone else experiencing freezing issue in recent apps screen? It happens frequently while the recent apps screen is empty and I minimize an app by pressing the recent apps button.

Try reducing the window transition and animation transition to 0.5x or keep them off by going to developer option.
See if that helps.

Already tried reducing to 0.5x but no help. When the recent apps screen is not empty then there is no freezing while minimizing.

I also have soak test official ota.
the problem with the google bar in multitasking has been resolved! with this:
''In Settings -> Apps -> Gear icon (top right) -> Default Apps -> Assistance (first one) -> Assistance application (click on gear icon) -> Select Google (in my case None was selected) -> restart phone
so you can remove or put the bar with this

Thanks but I don't get that Assistance option. In my case there is only Assist and Voice Input.
