OA8 Upgrade - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've read a lot of posts, and there are multiple instructions and people having different issues concerning upgrading to OA8 and keeping root.
1) At this time, do we have a set of instructions all in one place that works for almost everyone?
2) Anyone experiencing issues with the upgrade that would keep people from waiting until a better system is made?
Currently running NK2
Android 4.4.4
Kernel 3.4.0
Model SM-G900V
I can't play around at this time, because I'm using my phone for work, and can't be out of commission for an afternoon if I run into any problems. Thanks everyone!

About to root: Should I do the updates?

I know there is plenty of info on this topic but I have a few questions and it would be nice to have them all answered in this thread. I have a lot of rooting and modding experience (previous phone was the evo 3d), but I remember reading that one of the 2? sprint s4 updates may either not allow some apps to work or kill a feature/ interfere with rooting is that true?
-So is the MF9 the newest update or the 2nd to last? Can you guys please break down the main things changed in the two updates?
- How do I check which I am on atm? I don't remember doing any of the large ones.
Finally what would the best way to root? I plan on keeping touchwiz for now, and probably using Ktoonsez kernel?
Which recovery is recommended?

MF9 is the latest official release. If you want it I recommend updating before rooting just because it is a bit easier that way. Largest change in MF9 is apps2sd capability but can see the changes here: Update Changlog
To check just go to menu/settings/more/about device. Take note of software and baseband version. This will tell you what you are currently on.
Go here for root instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2257101
Recovery is really a personal choice. TWRP can be a bit buggy and depends on the version but still works for regular usage. CWM/OUDHS work fine as well. Use what you are familiar with. I prefer TWRP for the touch interface and restore of root if permissions get removed.
As for apps and MF9, I have read some having issues with certain apps but don't know much more than that. I have never had any issues with any app but know there are some with enormous amounts of apps on the device so who knows. Maybe it is a problem created when moving data to the extsd card.
Also, don't forget to check this thread after rooting. Has a wealth of information and links to what you can do: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2303917

Thanks for the quick reply. Lastly, I may have heard there is a tethering issue with MF9 is that true?

I'm not familiar with anything specific to MF9. Probably depends on the device trying to connect. My Note 8 connects/works fine using the hotspot mod on MF9 and previous versions.
I don't get why people do not ask this in the noob thread instead of making a new one.

I have MF9, rooted, stock rom. The Hotspot mod works for me, just like it did on the MDL. No problems installing it or using it on my S4.

[Q] Verizon galaxy note 3 roms!!!

Hi guys, I have a question regarding some roming stuff with the verizon version of the galaxy note 3. I am not new to roms by any means and I have been searching frantically to find one place with the complete answer im looking for. I made the early mistake of taking the OTA upgrade for KK, therefore I am currently running 4.4.2 with the NC4 build and NC4 baseband. Now while i have easily rooted my phone at this point with the towelroot. I also have had no problem getting the new 3.72 safestrap installed and running on my phone. My question now at this point is trying to figure out my next step with a new ROM I am trying install....I have been looking at all of my info to get the Hyperdrive ROM installed and I cant seem to find all the info I need in one location. Can I or can I not flash a new ROM to the NC4 baseband? I have seen some information where some people say I might be able to flash the NC2 kernal using ODIN and others say just trying to flash any ROM in general creates a black screen in which a battery pull needs to be done...yada yada.....? So in short, am I able to flash a ROM to the note 3 at this point or am I S.O.L? :crying:
You are not going to receive an answer because you posted a question in the "General" section. Hopefully a mod can move this thread to the "Q & A" section.
Thanks...
Gee thanks?

I am in the same exact predicament. Every rom I install just gives me a black screen. I'd love a solution to this.

Check out the OP by hsbadr he has done some great work and he lists very specific instructions on how to complete the flash of firmware/modem and rom without any problems
flashing note 3 custom roms etc to avoid "mandatory updates.
I'm in the same boat. I read that there's a possibility I should flash NC2 but I can't find a write up or sticky that says how. However I just received a notice that pointed me to some threads and answered my questions on terminology. ThankYou DavidFlory!! I will formally thank you in the thread. Until I can clear up the NC4/NC2 question I plan on keeping the rooted KitKat I've got. I'm scared Verizon/Google will attack again with a mandatory "update." Who's phone is this? What if I firewalled Verizon updater? Or froze it? The other day I did something that had columns of 3 pt text cascading on my screens until I used Samsung Kies to back me up flash the stock rom again. Root was retained. This was a worthwhile exercise as I had gotten carried away downloading android utilities.

Do you have the link?
OK so I found the link, followed every step I could which took a couple hours of research to get everything together. ...I flashed the jasmine rom, everything seemed to work fine until the last file in which Odin was successful, then I get a black screen that doesn't go away with any other means than a battery pull. Luckily I used the new 3.75 so I was able to do my rom under a different slot than stock...but maybe that's also the problem? So I'm back with a wiped phone and no custom rom which is irritating

Do you know where I can get the link for the JasmineROM 1.7.2 because 8 flashed 2.0 and it is devouring my battery.

[Q] Is not updating a bad thing?

Just curious and need some reassurance from the community. I am rooted, stock running 4.4.2 on build NCG. After rooting, I turned off Samsung and Verizon updating. Should I be updating manually as patches are pushed out? Am I putting myself at risk by not updating?
Appreciate any helpful suggestions or opinions, please no flaming and yes, I used the XDA search feature.
Thanks,
B2
EDIT: Found this Guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/safely-upgrade-root-4-4-4-nha-volte-t2879348
If the newer versions do more good for the phone then you totally should be. I just updated to the newest firmware but waited a little bit incase of any issues. No harm in not updating either, as I still have my tablet on an older version as I'm just too lazy to go through the whole process again.

I do not use SafeStrap or KeepRoot. I can't play around at this time, because I'm using my phone for work, and can't be out of commission for an afternoon if I run into any problems. Thanks everyone!
I hate to be the guy to say this but if you can't risk the device or have the ability to recover from a bad flash you should probably leave well enough alone.
Yeah, I get it, thanks. Anyway, has anyone had any luck with the upgrade to Lollipop? Namely, can we upgrade and keep root without setting up Safestrap?

The only way to flash roms or even restore a backup rom on 900V is with safestrap, because of the locked bootloader.

Agreed.

[Q] How do I go from Lollipop back to 4.4 and root?

I'm a noob. Apparently a dumb one because a couple of years ago I had no problem understanding and rooting my phone, trying custom ROMs, etc. Now, I can't even seem to filter through the posts to get the answer to one simple question:
1) I have a Galaxy 5 from Verizon G900V, with Lollipop, Kernal Version 3.4.0.
2) Is there a step by step place for dummies and noobs to take a phone like mine back to Kit Kat and use TowelRoot to gain root? TowelRoot was awesome, but it dumbed me down!
Thanks for your patience. I really did spend 90 minutes looking before i posted!!!

I just purchased a Verizon SGS5 and it has Lollipop BOC4 firmware installed and it's not rooted. I'm trying to go back myself and install this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/development/vzwstock-based-tw-rom-t3077705
I am pretty good at this but I'm also having issues. When I discover the process I will post the directions here. If you happen to find them, let me know. Thanks
And Thanks killa408shark for link. That one is for 4.4 but the link that is provided for 5.0 assumes root is already done.
I figured it out. I made a new thread with the exact steps I took. I hope this helps. Good luck.
