[Q] Is not updating a bad thing? - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just curious and need some reassurance from the community. I am rooted, stock running 4.4.2 on build NCG. After rooting, I turned off Samsung and Verizon updating. Should I be updating manually as patches are pushed out? Am I putting myself at risk by not updating?
Appreciate any helpful suggestions or opinions, please no flaming and yes, I used the XDA search feature.
Thanks,
B2
EDIT: Found this Guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/safely-upgrade-root-4-4-4-nha-volte-t2879348

If the newer versions do more good for the phone then you totally should be. I just updated to the newest firmware but waited a little bit incase of any issues. No harm in not updating either, as I still have my tablet on an older version as I'm just too lazy to go through the whole process again.

[Q] HELP! Cannot enable wifi after 4.3 OTA update

I cannot enable wifi since I updated to 4.3 today. I've tried everything I know and wifi will not toggle on.
I am so frustrated!
I was rooted before the update and lost root afterwards FYI for anyone who has root using 4.2.2
Is anyone else experiencing this?
I did see a message saying something about it not finding something on my SD card but not sure if the message (that flashed briefly) had anything to do with this issue or not.
Restarting the phone doesn't help.
My S4 is useless to me without wifi.
I have done a factory data reset and wiped all data. Still having the same issue.

I know this doesn't help you, but it may help others.....
Don't EVER take an OTA while rooted. Jeez, I thought that was the cardinal rule when deciding to root ones phone.....

People just assume they will fine. This guy/girl, I'm sure wasn't that patient and flashed the zip. The main thread for the update shows that members have been having problems with WiFi while flashing the update zip on stock rooted.

I'm familiar with rooting somewhat and figured for sure I'd lose root. I didn't know about the wifi issues though. I'm really not a dumb butt (and I'm not suggesting that's what you're saying exactly), it's just that after searching and searching for a primary thread and not finding one on the issue, I went ahead and did the update being fine with potentially losing root temporarily till another root option came out.
I feel like a dumb butt because I still cannot find the thread that you're talking about. Maybe I'm just overwhelmed. I have no idea why but my continued searches are still turning out fruitless for finding any info on wifi troubles at all except for people in Germany on different carriers.
Will someone kindly point me in the right direction for the thread you're referring to and in the right direction as to how I can flash my phone back to stock/unrooted?
I was just excited to get this update and have never ran into issues like this before with updating OTA on other devices, except for losing root.
I really do appreciate any help and I'm sorry for having a putz moment.
Garry.

If you already updated to mja update, you went to the path of no return; well for awhile. You can odin or anything or go back to other firmware. Its like apple's ios firmwares now. Being stuck when you upgrade and cant downgrade sucks really.

[Q] assistance for an android caveman user

Ok so having just come into the world of android i have done some digging on the site before i created a post because i honestly felt absolutely lost. I have a I337 MDL 4.2.2 galaxy S4 in my posession. I previously was not interested in any custom ROMs or rooting in particular, however i ended up rooting my phone using the motochopper tool a while back. since the release of jellybean 4.3 i have been desperately searching for a way to get the upgrade, however my OTA updates don't work because I'm always told to try again in 24 hours, even though i know full well the update is available. I am not sure if this is due to me using the phone in the caribbean where i live,or it being rooted. However, since the MDL baseband seems to be some sort of software gold,I would like to install a custom rom,and i really really need instructions so simple that an idiot would get it,cause I seem to not be getting this at all. Any redirections to other threads would be appreciated, such as GoldenEye which seems to be a decent ROM based on my internet travels lol. Also if there is a way to bypass all the drama and simply do the OTA update to 4.3,it would be greatly appreciated. I apologize for any rules broken or annoyances created and appreciate any help I can get.

As xBeerdroiDx said, do not take the update. The easiest thing to do is use the CASUAL root method, and then you can use the custom recovery it installs to flash StockUp MK2 if you want the 4.3 update as that way you can get it and still keep your custom recovery to change at any time. You may need the MK2 modem from the thread if your cell and data service stops working right but it should be good.

[Q] Reverted back to stock and now no updates?

Hi everyone!
I'm new so bear with me, please.
I have an AT&T S4 that had been unlocked even though I use it on AT&T. I rooted my device specifically to remove bloatware that came with it. Which I did. Eventually though I grew wary and decided I wanted to take everything back to stock like it was when I first got the phone. Didn't have any luck. After some research on here I found that I needed to flash it to NB1 using Odin and that's what I did. The phone booted fine, setup fine and even began updating apps. My problem is that it won't let me update to NJ4 again. The Software updater claims that there is no updates available when I know clearly there is. I'm not sure what I may have done wrong but I could use any help that anyone is willing to provide.
P.S. I rooted using Towelroot v3 following this method in this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/how-to-root-i337ucufnj4-4-4-4-11-13-2014-t2939553/post56738573#post56738573
Thanks in advance!
Troubleshooting section of first post of the thread you linked has steps to manually update to NJ4
i followed the guide mentioned .. I had to sideload the update as OTA was not detected by the phone
Now everything is working like a charm
OP, try this and all will be good
Solved
Thanks for the replies everyone, some very helpful information. Ironically, it seemed to have fixed itself this morning. I put it in it's usual place on the nightstand and when I awoke this morning, the notification was there and it successfully updated to 4.4.4 and everything seems to be going smoothly.
Thanks again for the quick replies. Should I ever need additional assistance I now know what forum I can turn to.

Did the PE1 update fix the High Android System usage? Is it safe to update with root?

I rooted my phone with the correct methods as in the threads below mine, and I purposely havent updated my phone for a while, just in case the root would only work for older system versions.
I'm just curious to know if, now that I'm rooted, is it safe to update to PE1, and will it fix the Android System battery drain? I've also downloaded all the root fixes too, as well as the Debloat, so my original System Updates app doesn't work anymore.
I would love to get just some answers from the pros on this before possibly bricking or boot looping my amazing phone.
Thanks!
*bump* Hate to bump, but does anyone know this question? After flashing all the fixes, I notice my battery still kinda goes down somewhat fast when in use and sometimes a bit fast when the screen is off.

I don't know if PE1 fixes the drain but it can be rooted and downgraded if needed. Same thing for the newest PF2 firmware I have here.
I have the same problem idk what to do if PE1 fixes the battery drain I'll gladly update if not I might have to go back to stock and just stay on it unless someone can find a way to unlock bootloader so we can get custom roms (only reason I wanted root tbh)
So I can just take the update now, WHILE rooted and I'll be fine? Will I have to re-root after the update is done, or do I just continue using it as normal?
Will I have to re-flash the new fixes for the PE1 version and stuff? Since I have flashed the old NON-PE1 fixes, will this brick my phone when updating to PE1?

What would happen?

I am currently rooted with MM on my S7-Edge, SM-G935A and yesterday I got the notification from AT&T that it wanted to update my phone to the newest version of Android, Version 7 (Nougat).
I thought about UN-Rooting my phone and let the OTA finish the process and complete the upgrade. But after looking around there isn't a stable version for Root on Nougat yet for the AT&T Phone, so I think I going to wait.
But my question is if I just let OTA update the phone without Un-Rooting it, what would happen to the phone. Would it just become Un-Rooted and be an Updated Android 7.0? Or would there be problems? I can say for sure that I would not do this as I like having Root Access and I don't think I would like living without Root. But I was just curious what would really happen?
I only have one phone and don't want to mess it up, but there are a lot of people on these forums that experiment with phones all the time.
Anyway, just a question for all of you in the know.
Judging from what happened with a minor update on my at the time rooted s6e, it'll just error out before anything is done due to the engboot not being what it expects.
It checks the hashes of that file and a lot of others before applying the update from what I can tell

Thanks for the reply. That is what I expected. I am not going to try this but like I said just curious. And you answered my question.
Again thanks.
Yup it wouldn't update.
