AT&T S4 no boot up - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hello. One of my friend have been having trouble booting up his at&t galaxy s4 just now and asked me for help
But I do not know what the problem is so we need help
phone cannot turn on, can show s4 screen after take out battery, but no boot animation and instant black screen afterwards
cannot do hard reset, nothing comes up
usb debug was not on, adb debugging can't find device to reboot bootloader
phone not rooted
no update recently, on kitkat 4.4 stock
does anyone have an idea what happened and how to fix it?
thank you in advance

bump

I think the phone just died on him and you can't fix it. If you have the same device take your battery and use it in his device. Maybe you get lucky and it's just the battery.

I found http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...battery-then-turns-off-after-two-seconds.html. It suggests cleaning the power button. It helped me. There should be YouTube videos to show you how to take it apart. I took the phone apart and put alcohol on the power switch with a q-tip. The, work the switch quite a few times. I repeated this 3-4 times before reassembling my phone.

Getting ready to say bye to Nexus one

hi guys,
yesterday, i turned on my nexus one, after not being use for a week. i turned on the nexus one normally, waiting until finish booting. i browsing the menu, looking for application, i open google voice, it decline to open, tap google voice icon for one more time, still can't. i push the sleep button. turned on it again. slide to unlock it, and it freeze. waiting around for 30 seconds still freeze, nothing happen when i try to turn it off. reinsert the battery. now it didn't respond anything, try boot to recovery mode, no respond, plug in the charger, no any light. today i try to turn on the nexus one, still no respond.
i'm in malaysia, so there is no official support to claim the warranty. and i already unlock the bootloader, so warranty already voided. Good bye nexus one, may be i will never bye an android phone anymore. it is the best phone i ever had in my life, i know exactly why google call it "Superphone". it really deserve that name. PS: i still couldn't believe i make my own nexus one broke by my self.
Good bye nexus one. good bye xda-developers. good bye cyanogen.
Aww, dont do that
It sounds like you have a dead battery, the phone cant boot without a battery. You can buy OEM batteries onine at multiple online sources.
Seriously, Perhaps try to factory reset the phone before giving up after 5 seconds.
will you send it to me if i pay for the shipping, my son dropped mine today and destroyed the screen. would be a great help. thanks, veritasaequita
OMG.. stop crying the minute something is wrong. Try to solve it...
HTC will replace your phone even if you unlocked the bootloader if the hardware died so just call them and explain..
You could try the factory reset before that.

yea HTC has been well known to do this. i was gonna tell you to boot into recovery but i just read that you cant. you should maybe try to factory reset.
you can also try to get a new battery like others said
can you plug it by usb to your computer? maybe you should try wiping through ADB
still no respond by doing factory reset.
is i completely dead?
Mine wouldnt power on, it only started flashing a yeallow and green light when i triede powering on.
What i had to do to get it to boot, was remove battery, hold power button for 10-15sec put battery back in, connect the phone to a wall charger, wait 30 minutes, and then it powerd on no problem, ive had this isse 3 times now, and it seems to bring it back to life everytime.

[Q] Galaxy S4 hardbrick

Hey,
This is my first time posting here and really using the site. I have the Sprint Galaxy S4 and just updated to the SlimKat official build 7 and had no initial problems. A day later it starts to reboot constantly and would stay on for a couple minutes. Now it is stuck in a bootloop and will shut off even when going into download or recovery mode. When plugged into a computer the computer won't even recognize the phone and the phone will not turn on. The only time the phone will even start to boot is when it is not plugged into wall/computer and on battery. I have no idea what to do now.
That's a tough one. Usually with a soft brick, if you can make it to recovery, your phone can be saved but since you can't... I hope you get it working!

Go to sprint galaxy s4 thread. All answers there. You need Odin 3.09 then stock ng2 tar. To flash through computer.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using XDA Free mobile app
I already have odin and the tar files for stock. When plugged into my computer it will not even register that it is connected and so I can't use odin to flash it.
The same thing is happening to me. I get to the Galaxy S4 splash screen, then it shuts off. Even if I try to boot into recovery
I'm going to pile on in here as I seem to be having a similar issue. I had my S4 (not rooted, stock rom) on my dock streaming google music. A phone call came in and the phone started vibrating like crazy and wouldn't stop. The screen shut off and the phone was still vibrating. Finally it stopped and was shut off. When I try to start it a few things happens. It will sometimes boot to my lock screen and the screen goes black and I think it is powered off. Sometimes it will get past the lock screen and then die shortly after. After like 2 or 3 times of that it won't even boot. It loads the Samsung screen but never gets to the Sprint screen or boots. If I leave it for some time shut off with battery out it will go back to booting to the lock screen then dying etc... When I press the buttons to get into recovery it says recovery is loading and then the screen goes black. I swapped batteries and that didn't do anything. I tried pressing the menu button or the home button to try and boot safe mode and it just loads normally not that I think that would help anyway.
Any ideas on things I can try next? What is this odin thing? Would that work for me?
---------- Post added at 07:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:16 PM ----------
Ok... I can get into recovery now and will try a factory reset. Are you sure you are going into recovery correctly. Apparently I was not. Hold volume up power and menu button and when the phone vibrates let go of power only.
Before I do a hard wipe is there any way to get data off the internal memory from recovery mode?
So I got a custom recovery installed, reinstalled stock rom, things worked ok for awhile. Then it started random reboots every 10 mins or so. Now it is back to instant crashing and rebooting. Any idea what could be the issue? I'm assuming at this point it is hardware related. Why can recovery and download mode run consistently without crashing but when an os is fired up it has issues? If it was a hardware issue shouldn't it not work across the board?
So I had Sprint replace my phone on the 8th. I have been using my same batteries (1 stock 1 Anker) and chargers (some stock some not) without issue the past 5 days. I rooted and installed xposed and some modules (original broken phone was never rooted and was completely stock). Things were going great until tonight when it started reboot looping exactly like the old phone. I switched battery and same proble. After I took the battery out and left it out awhile it fired back up but I'm afraid the problem will return. Is it possible that the battery or charger randomly are causing damage to the phone? I only have 14 day warranty on this replacement and need to figure this out.
So things were going well for awhile and then the reboot loops started up again. I did some digging and read that apparently Samsung phones are notorious for sticking power buttons and the symptoms were exactly what I was experiencing. I watched some videos online how to open the phone and clean out the power button but it didn't make a difference. I then read that squeezing the connector for the power button with a pair of pliers sometimes does the trick. Not for me. So finally since I'm not under warranty, have no insurance, and the phone wasn't working anyway, I just ripped the white plastic part of the power button right off. Well, that seemed to do the trick. Phone immediately fired back up without issue and has been going strong. I glued a small thin piece of plastic where the old one used to be and I am back in action. If my little plastic piece solution eventually fails or breaks off I will consider soldering on a new button but so far so good.
If you have tried everything else, and are looking for last resort, try cleaning the power button with some alcohol, and if that fails, rip off that power button! Here is the video that gave me the idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Glllc7bEJs and here are some other power button videos: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=s4%20power%20button&search_type=&aq=f&oq=

RIP my SGS4?

HELP.. RIP my SGS4?
Okay so I have been researching for the last week for solutions..in fact i have not found the exact same problem I have..
Samsung Galaxy S4 White 16gb Rogers
Running Lollipop that was pushed by rogers
Not rooted, nothing custom
Battery works fine on other S4's, new battery didn't help my phone
Problem: Every time i turn it on, it shows the "SAMSUNG GALAXY S4" for about a second or two and then turns off and wont turn on again until i take the battery out and put it back in...where it does that again, before i could drain any sparks left from the phone before putting the battery back in and it would turn on and i can use it until i touch the power button, where it would pop the prompt to turn off/restart device where then it would just turn off.. if it got a little to heated it would do the same. My friend is a phone technician and he said he cant find the problem...so I am hoping someone here can help me out. The battery will probably die soon and I cant seem to get it to charge.
I have factory reset it twice and nothing helped. I factory reset in recovery mode both times.
I hope everyone has a wonderful day and someone is able to help me out.. I kinda dont have a phone now Anyways, thanks.
P.S. I can upload a video to show you what I mean if you dont understand my typing lol.
My only advice is the typical one, use Odin to restore, rather than factory reset.

I had this exact same problem. It's an issue with the power switch. Mine went away after a while one time, the second time I just mashed the power button and put in the battery to see if it would turn on and kept doing that until it worked. It can also help if you just tap that side of the phone on a hard surface, maybe aim the button for the edge of your desk, but not hard.
More technical alternatives involve opening up the phone and cleaning the contacts of the power button with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol, or just desoldering and soldering a new one after testing the old one with a multimeter.
EDIT: as far a new phones go, I'd keep an eye between the Nexus phones and the Moto X Pure Edition.

Yea I opened it up and looked in, the screen connector ribbon looked like as if ink or black marker was put on it and i cleaned it up and it turned on but after hitting power button it turned off... but i got it on but squeezing the screen and back near the power button when using it and it seems to make the power button work.. I got an app to lock my screen but i guess until i get a new phone i can stick with this sideline for my phone haha. Thanks tho
As for phones, I love the Nexus family haha, Moto X Pure isnt in Canada It would be to much of a hassle to get it in though i could. I really want the Xperia Z5, Nexus 5x or 6p. As a graphic designer everyone is telling me to get an iPhone tho... Ill see when ever the S4 gives out on whats in the market #Android4Life.
EDIT: I also tried the banging thing and stuff and it didnt help lol

Does holding the home button power your phone? Mine does, though it takes about 10 seconds to do so.
And please don't listen to that iPhone nonsense, why would a graphic designer ever do so?!

It powers up and shows "Samsung Galaxy S4" but goes to a black screen after seeing the logo for 2-4 seconds, i have to take it apart and reconnect everything on the motherboard, plug it into an outlet and boot in download mode and then reboot the phone for it to turn on, and the second the power button is touched, it turns off in 5 seconds. Today the GS4 turned off by itself twice and it took my about 2 hours to get it back on.
I love androids, don't get me wrong, Android>iPhone>Blackberry>Windows phone.. I chose an android over the iPhone already, twice. As of right now, performance wise the iPhone seems to be pretty good, price wise? Apple needs to die. lol. Overall I would pick between the Z5, iPhone 6+/6s+ or any of the upcoming Nexus phones. Which ever is cheaper or better money wise at the time when my GS4 fully dies off...which will be soon... is the phone ill get. Which is why I have the pole up there..
I currently use Samsung Tab A and the SGS4 and an iPod Touch 5th gen. Everything runs smooth on my iPod tho.. so I can't wait until I get either the Z5, iP or Nexus.

That is my problem, the phone turning off right away

Galaxy Note 4 Not booting up, black screen.

Hello everyone, I bought an used Galaxy Note 4.
The owner said that the phone turned off during an update and no longer boots.
I let a professional see it and he told me that the screen was damaged so i changed it -- still nothing.
The phone wont boot, it vibrates once and then it just sits there.
The things i tried to fix are:
Remove the battery, press the power button for 1/2/3 minutes, put the battery back in and hope (did nothing)
Plug it in to the pc and try to format it/flash operating system (did nothing).
I also tried to feel if something in the device turned really hot but nothing, everything is cool and (apparently) fine.
I really need some help, if someone got something even remotely useful go ahed and share it, thank you in advance -- it's really appreciated :good:

Is my Note 4 dead?

Hello dear community,
I'm posting there because I have some doubts about my phone and i'd like some answers from you.
1 month ago, I was charging my phone. When it reached 100% battery, It was fine but the problem is when I was trying to press "power" to turn it on but It didn't want to. So, I removed the battery because I couldn't even turn it off. When I tried to restart it again, it didn't want to. No reaction to the "power" button.
I followed EVERY tips on Google but none worked. I also tried to change my battery but nothing. I tried also to connect it to my computer, it was detected but my phone didn't turn on.
So, I guess my phone is dead unless if there is a solution to make it working? Also before that, my phone was becoming very laggy and when it had a small lag, it was turning off and was rebooting.
Thank you in advance for your answers.

I have mustered some conclusions about your phone based on what you typed:
1st claim: The power button no longer works anymore
•Reason: "... when I was trying to press "power" to turn it on... it didn't want to... When I tried to restart it again, it didn't want to. No reaction to the "power" button."
—Seems like you're gonna have to find another Note 4 and replace its motherboard with the Note 4 whose power button doesn't work anymore after 5 years.
But before spending, I would like you to try this method from a Youtube comment:
"... you'll just have to keep the charger [cable connected] on [your phone] while you take off the battery, and put it back after; then, remove the charger quickly..."
—————
2nd claim: The screen no longer works
•Reason: "I tried also to connect it to my computer, it was detected but my phone didn't turn on."
—If the phone is charged, seeing nothing but blackness, but you still see an emitting LED light on the top-left corner, that's a sign that it still works, just not the screen. So I would suggest that you buy a new screen and replace it with your old one. If you think you can't, then go to a phone repair shop and let others do the repairing.
—————
3rd claim: The motherboard is dead
•Reason: "... before that, my phone was becoming very laggy and when it had a small lag, it was turning off and was rebooting."
—The motherboard might be dead if these are happening, but I don't think this is the right reason unless the first two conclusions are proven to be true. If the first two conclusions are proven to be false, then the motherboard is dead, and you may either buy another Note 4 motherboard or get a new phone.

Thank you for your answer.
To answer you clearly about all the points you clarified, there is no led light appearing when putting it on charge and I also tried the "Youtube comment" but nothing.
So I think, the motherboard is dead as you mentioned. I just don't understand how it died after a charge but as I saw on Google, it's a general problem on Galaxy Note 4, so I think i'm not surprised at all. It's been since 2015 I had it.
Thank you for your time and to have solved my doubts about the death about my phone.

Put in cold fridge for 30 min without battery, then try to turn it on. If not, try the cardboard method under the emmc chip (search youtube)

Is this a serious thing ? (fridge)
I did the oven trick on my n910t. I left my phone stuck in the grill of my truck when I changed the brakes. I took it for a test drive and ended up running over the phone. Me being a noob at the time didn't know the AT&T Note 4 would not unlock Bootloader for custom roms or custom recoveries. I purchased the AT&T Note and was sorely disappointed there after. Flash 2019 I still have the motherboard for my note that I ran over. I can only get in to go into download mode and only when it was plugged in. I flash custom ROM or custom recovery and it would say would pass but it would just boot loop and boot loop. So I read somewhere where you can put it in the oven for around 5 to 6 minutes at about 200° and that it would settle any of the cracked solder that be around the emmc or anywhere else on the board. So I tried it. I stuck it in two different times at five minutes a piece, pull the board out and let it set for a day. I installed the board just a little while ago and she fired right up. It's amazing
I've recently replaced the motherboard on my N910F with a used one bought from AliExpress. As it's used I've no idea how long it will last but for £30 was worth a try.
It was pretty straightforward replacing the motherboard using one of the tear down guides on YouTube.
