[Q] Need help on ROM upgrade - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I have a Sprint, Samsung Galaxy S-4 running a Stock Rooted version of Android 4.2.2 (MDL). I'd like to upgrade to basically a Stock Rooted Android Kit Kat, with KNOX and the kit kat SD writing restrictions both turned off.
Lollipop would be better, but I don't think that's out yet for Sprint, is it?
Can someone help point me to the right files I need to upgrade? Do I need anything else besides the ROM, such as a kernal, modems, or anything else?
I'm getting a little lost in wading through all of the different ROMs and Upgrades.
thanks

There are two or three stock 4.4 ROMs in the android section that are great. I have used them several times. There are a few Lollipop roms as well that work really well. If you want stock 4.4, there is a download for that which you flash with Odin, you can then root and add what you want to it. You can also get it from Sammobile. I do not normally run CM only because other roms have had options I wanted but the CM ROM in the Original Android section is really good. There is a GPE port from the i9505 rom as well that is pretty good. It has a few superficial problems that you can fix if you follow the instructions in the posts. In other words, there are several Lollipop roms and the KK rom in this forum. Take your pick.

Will this thread do what I want?

This is the one I would suggest if you are adjust rooted and have a custom recovery. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2866864

I normally flash the last version. 1.3

[Q] Questions about FW updates on my S4..

I'm used to my Skyrocket so I'm not too noobish, but the s4 is different so I want to do this right.
So I have been reading Haphim's thread listed below about getting his new phone and he said it came with the MDL fw.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432816
Mine came with MDB FW. I immediately turned off the OTA updates after I rooted the phone. I had some issues trying to rename the Data Management app, so I used TBU to freeze it. Thank goodness ~wolverine~ posted a link to the 3 updates I needed to freeze. I found 2 of the 3 updates, but FWUpgrade x.x.x was not listed on my device. Is this because of the age of my firmware? This was NEW in the box, so I must have gotten one that had been sitting on a shelf somewhere, that is if the MDB fw is older..
Now if the above holds true about the MDB FW, are there any advantages of this one over any others?
What about modems? Can I update to a newer modem without upgrading my FW?
I'd like to go to a newer TW based rom (I have a Samsung TV and would prefer to use Allshare, ect). Can I do this with just flashing the rom via TWRP? Do I need a newer modem to do so? I saw some mention that an international version of TW rom is better. Why would that be? I'd like to jump to 4.3, but I'm still on 4.2.2.
Just a side question, does the CM based roms have Bluetooth issues? the Skyrocket CM based roms had connectivity issues where you'd have to reboot to get BT functionality back.
Sorry for the list of questions, I just got this phone and do not want to brick it.
I'm assuming you already found this, but if not it's a good place to start. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42320391
Flashing roms is not as straight forward as the sr as the boot loader is locked and you need to use Loki to work around it. If it were mine I'd Odin to mdl, root it and freeze the update apps so you don't get mf3. Then do more research until you're comfortable flashing.
Thanks for the reply. The thread you linked was very informative.. but..
What about the other questions? Modems, CM issues, ect?

[Q] rooted NC5 downgrade to aosp?

Hi everyone,
I have a question... I took the NC5 OTA update not knowing it would lock up the device, in fact the first time I turned it on it was the only option to upgrade or delay it. So I've completed gogolies OTA downgrade to rooted upgrade (NC5) and it worked! every happy about that. However I really want something pure AOSP. Can I downgrade again to an older version in order to load something like AKOP or Cyanogenmod? I looked around for 4.4.2 roms and was unable to find anything pure... when I say pure I mean the AOSP images, icons, software nothing designed by Samsung.
Thank you,
Ck
Why do you need to downgrade? You can just flash any custom rom you want.
There are a lot of AOSP roms. You can find them in the Original Development section.
Thank you for the reply however I've tried to install AOKP and CM10 both on slot one and both failed (booted to black screens) and I don't see any I545 roms on this site. Could you point me in the correct direction? I'm currently running rooted 4.4.2 NC5 on i545
Thank you again,
Ck

Hi,
Please check for your specific device forum .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon
If you flashed a ROM from the threads on this forum it's very likely it didn't work because the international S4 is different from Verizon one .

SM-N9005 Downgrade 4.4.2 to 4.3

Hi guys, I have been searching everywhere in order to know how to downgrade from 4.4.2 back to 4.3.
However, all posts were telling that once we have updated to 4.4.2....there is no way on downgrading.
So,even the Samsung center can't help me to downgrade too?
Because Im thinking to go over Samsung center to downgrade if they can really do so.
you have a big risk to brick your phone
I read somewhere that someone do it but everywhere it's recommand and it said that after upgrade to KK, no way back
Won't happen. The only way to downgrade a snapdragon based note 3 is to replace the mainboard with one that has not yet seen kitkat.
Sent from my leanKernel 3.4 powered stock 4.4.2 (NF4) SM-N900T
hell...i juz received the 4.4.2 update and start facing so many issues especially the sd card file permission..
It did hav solution but require root..so i thaught maybe reverting to previous version will do..
But now, my note 3 is hopeless and wondering if samsung will release a fix for this ;-(

Well, It can happen now. It may be a little too late for many who might have moved on to newr phone by now. But as a new n9005 owner I struggled hard to downgrade to 4.3 without any issues. So by trial and error I managed to do it taking cues from the original post in another thread. My reason for the downgrade was better battery life. But that did not happen after downgrade. AT least not in a significant way.. Anyway here's my strategy in summary for those who want to downgarde to 43 with no issues. It worked for me. IMEI ok, video recording ok. But I give no guarantee for others. I am not allowed to provide links so will just provide enough clues to loacte them.
Here's what I did:
Again to remind use this is to downgrade N9005 FROM 4.4.2 TO 4.3
The starting point is 4.4.2 rom version N9005XXUGNG1. I had N9005XXUGNG1_VFGGNH1 if you have Android 5.0 first downgrade to this
1. Do A Wipe Data Factory Reset and cache partition
2. Odin: Flash In AP the file "COMBINATION_FA43_N9005XXUGNH1_N9005OXAGNH1_267031 2_REV00_user_mid_noship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5."
3. Odin: Flash In AP a JB compatible cwm/twrp (look up in this forum) recovery for N9005
5. Boot into Recovery and do a Data/Cache/Dalvik wipe
6. Install in recovery Omega Rom 4.0 for N9005 JB 4.3 (N9005_Omega_v4.0_XXUDMJ7_md5_A7256B2A7F2E7005A65A 6E1CA5EA77C9.zip
7. Done! you will be running a fully working Jelly Bean 4.3 ROM!
Search google for the download links for the required files in 2 and 6. I got them form google search
Thanks InSenex! Would it be possible to flash a _stock_ 4.3.x ROM after the procedure described by you? Omega is a custom ROM, or am I mistaken?
Omega is custom rom.

Its a stock based touchwiz custom rom. Its tweaked stock rom. Its not a custom rom like cm, aosp, aokp etc. Those wishing to desperately downgrde to 4.3 probably would not care about tweaked stock rom or original stock rom

Omega is STOCK based touchwiz tweaked rom. I believe you can make it a pure stock rom by stripping off all the optmizations/tweaking done to it, replacing deleted stocke files from an extracted stock rom, or flash a cwm/twrp flashable jelly bean stock rom (Not sure if it exists, but there are guides on how to make a flashable stock rom)
Original question answered correctly .
<Omega is a custom ROM, or am I mistaken? >
Its a custom rom .
Based on Samsung firmware yes .
Thats why its in Android Development section .
Please be carefull of giving users wrong / confusing information .

Lollipop Update ?

Hey community today I bought my S5 and I was wondering should I update it to lollipop since I heared that there are many bugs ? What about you guys that already did the update, are you satisfied, are there any major issues ? one more thing, what about custom 5.1.1 roms, are they any good, regarding camera quality ?
Any answers are appreciated.
If you plan to root your phone, you won't want to update just yet. currently, there is no easy way to root stock lollipop, like there was on 4.4.2
That said, I just got my GS5 last week (work phone) and it updated the 2nd day I had it, before I knew about the no-root situation. I haven't noticed any bugs or issues with 5.0 yet, and I do like the UI better than the previous version on 4.4 (it's a bit less touchwizzy)
Also, I do like that samsung at least gives you the option to disable most of the bloatware apps that are preinstalled. I disabled a lot the apps I didn't want/use and the phone has been running great. Battery life has been stellar and the standby time is crazy good.

If your KK ROM build is earlier than June 2014, you can use Towelroot without downgrading Kernels
If it's newer, you'll need to either downgrade to a pre June 2014 KK ROM, or find the <June 2014 KK Kernel, flash that, Root, flash your Kernel back again

[Q] I337M advice request.

I'm going looking into flashing a custom ROM on my sister's i337m (on Rogers) . Currently it is on Lollipop OTA update, and she says that ever since the update it has been super slow and laggy. I told her i can flash a custom ROM and it should be much better performance (in my experience good custom roms can provide much better performance than stock firmware in most cases).
I'm not familiar with the S4 specifically but have been using custom ROMs myself on various other phones so i generally familiar with the procedures involved. Just want to ask for advice on a couple points.
1) From what i've read so far i am trying to decide between Goldeneye and Kangapop. both seem to be pretty solid options. I noticed in the install instructions for both it mention that the i337m useres need to have 4.4.2 baseband and bootloader. Is there any specific one that works better than others i see a few different stock versions of 4.4.2 for i337m Rogers on sammobile (MG1, NC1, NE1, NI2) I am currently downloading the most recent NI2. Just not sure if specific versions have any bugs, flaws or advantages/disadvantages to worry about..
2) I figured while i'm going to have to downgrade the firmware to install the custom ROM i might as well try the Root/Unlock procedure from this thread . Is this still working? I think i would need to flash the stock NI2 firmware then follow the procedure in that thread to root and unlock the phone then from there i could install Goldeneye or Kangapop? Has anyone done this or can confirm if it should work this way.
Thanks
