i9505 MHL with CM12 and other Lollipop roms (no TW) - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
can anyone help me get my MHL connection working with i9505 running CM12?
I bought a new MHL adapter (one side microUSB - charging port - HDMI out + reduction for micorUSB for S3) then I connected to my Samsung TV (older model like 4 years) and ... nothing happened on both sides. The only thing I saw was a phone charging from the adapter (because of external charger). Do I need to modify something, or is it my TV not supporting?
Appreciate help

bump --- really no one using MHL adapters?

Hi!
I've got some information, I think I can help you.
First is support for HDMI in CM12, i checked it on SaberMod CM12 and it's works. I dont know what with another CM12, CM11, MIUI build, TW rom support that but Live Demo Unit soft (S4 with Retail Mode and without GSM) no.
Second, what type of MHL you have?
- MHL1 with 5-pin cable - this is for S2, Note (1) Glalaxy Nexus and some another. Probably incompatible.
- MHL1 with 11-pin cable - for S3, Note 2, S4 and Note 3 work good
If you have MHL with 11-pin cable and it's not working you may use another reduction for micorUSB, maybe your is damaged or MHL is damaged.

thanks for answer!!!
The adapter is new and is for the newer models - Note 2,3 S3,4 - I tried connecting from microUSB and also with the reduction for S3 (different shape of a connector a little) - but still no go. TV saying no signal. Let's assume my connector is not broken (everything else works)
I am on AntaresOne's CM12 optimized. so I will try to ask in the thread you posted - maybe ther are some modification of the ROM inside which allows MHL.

and also with the reduction for S3 (different shape of a connector a little)

What you mean? S4 like S3 have the same microUSB port, can't be another shape of connector. The best way it to show your MHL cable. I have that:

I tried the microUSB reduction exactly as on your picture - the very left one (they probably forget to put S4 label on it - only S3 label for the reduction - so I tried both ...)

Right, box have not label with S4 but for me work
I'm sorry, but I have to ask to be sure - you connect microUSB to S4, big usb to power (usb charger/usb port in TV) and HDMI to TV?

I have slightly different model: I connected the (s3) reduction to the adpter microUSB - connect to phone. Then take my charger and connect it to the body of the adapter. Then the whole system is connected to HDMI.

GT-P1000 & GT-P7500 resistor values/resistor list
Hey guys.
I can't not be the only one some need Resistor values for the Galaxy Tab.
Like this for i9000 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=820275
plz help me with the resistor list for the Galaxy Tab (P1000 & P7500)
I know i have to use Pin 13 (USB ID) + GND Pin 15.
But the list with resistor values will be so ****in nice.
My Resistor List:
20K ohm - USB Host
7.5K ohm - Car Dock (Finde from a car dock without sound, only power)
yes they are the same
I bought a galaxy tab 7" usb connector to charge my galaxy tab 10.1 and it works
Also its able to connect to kies with it so they are the same
In order to use pin 27, 28 & 30 to get audio out, I am assuming you need to strap a resistor somewhere to get the tablet to output audio. Can some one let me know where and what value? I built an audio cable but alas no audio output
just because the charging cable is the same, does not mean the pin out is the same. the galaxy tab 7" composite cable doesn't work on the 10" tab.

As the pic on is for a GT 7", i wonder if anyone has managed to get a gt 7" in download mode with making a "jig" like the one you can make for i9000?
30-pin Connector Adapter DIY Problem
I already own a standard MHL adapter cable with micro-USB plug and HDMI output, which works for various devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Note, S2, HTC Sensation, Flyer, etc. This is a good investment because the adapter is a standard one.
I don't want to buy another MHL adapter with proprietary 30-pin plug for my new Galaxy Tab. The 30-pin version MHL for tab is unreasonably much more expensive and I can't find a third party substitute at this moment.
Thus I am trying to make a connector adapter so that I can use my existing MHL adapter. Unfortunately, following the pinout diagram shown above, I was unable to make it work. I am sure that I connected the MHL_DP, MHL_DM correctly. The problem probably lies on the MHL_ID. I have tried connecting the MHL_ID to ground but it didn't work. I wonder if anyone can give me some hints? Should I add some resistors? Where can I find more information?
The attached picture shows my DIY design (not working at this moment)
@aeioo: Sorry I'm of no help, but please if you finally get it working, please, please, please, let me know.
I own a Galaxy Nexus and a Tab 7.7 I don't have the MHL adapter yet because I can't decide for which device do I want it.
What you are trying would be the perfect solution for me.

I have seen a block diagram in page 11 of this datasheet You can see there that the MicroUSB pin 4 is connected to the MHL Proccessor, so may be that you have to connect MHL_ID to pin 4 in the MicroUSB connector.
Just a thought... Any idea if this would hit it off?
Looking at the different diagrams, and similarities between the 10.1 and 7 tab-
Thrown together a power cable with USB host, and audio/video out. Bit old school composite video but should be able to load videos from USB drive, play out to projector/TV, and NOT GO FLAT!
Not tested as waiting for the 30pin connector and some resistors, as i can imagine having to find the correct mode on pin13 will be difficult. Started out in host and powered mode here and will improve/update when i get the parts. Anyone managed to get anything similar working?
Diagram link - www . supportituk.co.uk/#/images/4562009987
Would it be possible to get the HDMI out connector working without an external power source? Or is a fix available via software?
Thanks

I think the confusion was with the SD adapter. It said "8.9 only" on Samsung CTIA slide. Hopefully they'll have one.
Anyone else think it's a bit of a con to release these all as separate adapters (i.e. if you want HDMI then that's an adapter, USB is another adapter, SD card slot is another adapter). I think Samsung could have put all those connections into a single adapter. Also, it's weird how the HDMi adapter has a little bit of cable to give some flex in the connection where as the USB adapter is just a single block.

Considering how big these adapters are, shame they couldn't put USB and SD or USB and HDMI or all three on a single adapter.
Even the media port doesn't appear to have HDMI out it, looks like it has another 30 pin port on the back and you have to buy the HDMI adapter for that.
All these adapters, all being sold separately is gonna get quite pricey too. Even Apple was compassionate enough to sell the USB and SD adapter in a single kit for $30 (saving $10 over buying each separately for $20).
PS. Though I imagine some third party might save us and come up with some adapter that combines multiple things together. They've done it with the iPad adapters.
Ugh these accessories are such a rip off. $19.99 for the damned additional data cable?! The hdmi cable port is also $29.99, just absolutely ridiculous. I'll prob eventually snag one regardless... :-/

TV-OUT

Hi all,
I was using 3.5mm cable for tv out on my i9000, but i see that doesnt work for i9100...
Will anyone do a hack or something like this for it?
I know there is cable from samsung to hdmi but i am asking it for tvs or auto radios without hdmi...
Is it possible to make a hack or mod for using 3.5mm tvout cables?
I have this cable:

It was working on my sgs i9000...
Thanks and sorry for my english...
Are you just looking to output sound from the 3.5mm jack, or video as well?
If both, I think you may be out of luck, as as far as I know the 3.5mm jack in this case is a standard mic + stereo sound (+antenna) thing.
nvm/....,.,,.

You need a MHL adapter.

You need to buy a MHL adapter that comes with it's own power supply and then connect it to the micro USB port on the phone from then on it's HDMI > HDMI.

Yes, for using on tv...
I was using exactly this cable with my Samsung galaxy s:
When i was using this one, there was a tv-out section in settings...
My neighbour bought sgs2 because of this cable works with his kenwood auto radio... He has only rca input for video so he cant use hdmi.
He has something like this but inc. no bluetooth or hdmi input, only rca input for video:

video will never work from the 3.5 on the sgs2, the hardware isn't there.
you will need the mhl cable and an hdmi to rca for the "car video" solution

Possible to use this adapter for usb-keyboard use on the note?

Is it possible to use this cheap 5-pin Micro-USB, type B - male to 4 pin USB typ A - female adapter to plug in a usb-keyboard to the note?
Or is it something special about these OTG-cables?
Please see the attached file.

I have tried a simple adaptor and it did not work - there are very similar looking adaptors that are OTG though.
Personally, I prefer to use a mini Bluetooth keyboard with integral "mouse" touchpad or an OTG cable to connect a similar USB keyboard rather than an OTG adaptor as I worry that I may lever the adaptor by catching it and cause damage by the straining the micro USB socket in the Note.
When you plug in an OTG adaptor or cable, the Note comes up with the message "USB connector connected" - a plain adaptor does not cause a message.
The picture below shows, from top to bottom, OTG USB adaptor connector, OTG USB adaptor lead, Wireless mini keyboard with mouse "touchpad", Bluetooth mini keyboard with mouse "touchpad".
Both mini keyboards came with wireless or bluetooth receivers which do not work with the Note as, I assume, they need "Windows" type drivers. The Wireless one cannot therefore be used with the Note (even though it also has a mini USB connection - probably only for charging use) whereas the Bluetooth one does work can as it connects using the inbuilt Android/Note bluetooth rather than using the supplied mini USB bluetooth receiver.
Hope this helps!

USB-OTG (they're all the same) works perfectly with some USB keyboards and mouses but not with all of them. I'm using Genius mouse and Microsoft Wired 200 keyboard.
Thanks, i'll try it. If it works it works
btw, neat bluetooth keyboard/mouse you got there!
I have a mini-wireless USB keyboard/trackpad from Kogan that looks closer to the mini-Bluetooth one in the 2nd post, and that works fine with my usb2Go adaptor and the Note. I know both look similar, but the button configuration under the trackpad on mine is the same as the Bluetooth one.
I like the idea of the bluetooth one mind you!

Thanks for that info, very useful. I'm considering getting one, can you advise where you got yours (a link would be great, if not, a manufacturer name and/or part number would do ... worst case can you advise approx price & dimensions?)
Although I have a USB one I bought from Kogan, this thread made me aware that there were now bluetooth ones too, so I've just ordered this one from Ebay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rii-Mini-i6-Bluetooth-IR-Keyboard-Touchpad-2-1-UK-Latest-Version-2011-/250901297139?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_KeyboardsMice&hash=item3a6ae1f7f3#ht_2215wt_905
It seems to be a slightly later design/model than the one shown in the 2nd post here, but you can find that too if you search ebay with the term "mini bluetooth keyboard rii".
Regards,
Dave
looks good - the universal learning IR remote is a nice add-on too. Let us know how it performs when you get it ...
meantime, I see you've got a wireless USB k/b already working via USB OTG. I'm awaiting my OTG adaptor so I can try that out with my existing (compact, but not mini) wireless k/b with optical trackball. Not sure how much current the Note can supply for OTG usage but I guess I can just use a powered hub if required?

I had a new case and keyboard arrive for my nexus today but the keyboard doesn't seem to be detecting at all. I've been browsing all evening trying to find a fix but to no avail so far...
These are the specifics;
Nexus 7 wifi 32gb stock rom, JB 4.2.1
This exact MINI USB Keyboard (Can't identify manufacturer as the keyboard is built in to the case)
Mini usb - micro usb connector
I have verified the usb connector is working fine as I am able to plug in a mini usb charger to the nexus through it and it charges fine.
When I plug in the keyboard it doesn't work or seem to be detected in any way.
Where am I going wrong?
I can't try a USB OTG cable as I am not connecting a full size USB peripheral. I installed usb host diagnostics and ran it with the keyboard connected but I'm not sure how to interpret the results which are as follows;

Additional info;
I added a 51-android.rules file as per the process in this thread, and included ALL manufacturers and ID codes but still no fix
You *do* need an OTG cable. It has two pins (4 and 5) connected. That's what tells the tablet that it's in host mode. If you want to adapt yours, here's the procedure (obviously, use at your own risk!):

tjupille is correct, a normal micro USB cable will only have 4 pins connected, the 5th pin needs to be grounded on the tablet side of the cable. If you can find/make a such a cable and if it's a standard USB HID keyboard then it should work out of the box on a stock N7 without the need for any special configuration.
I have also seen where some non-stock ROMs lose the OTG support. This wouldn't be your case as you are running what looks to be a stock ROM. Now then, I have had a few OTG cables go bad. Some of them are just made cheaply.
Thanks all, I understand the otg cable setup much better now. I figured that with a standard connection android should see the device as an input device and it would just work. Have a cable on order now. I have the kit to mod my existing adapter but for such a small amount of money I'd rather not gamble frying my nexus. Look forward to when it arrives as I keep going to use the hard keys!

dealextreme has some otg cables, you can purchase it.
A # of eBay stores carry these Micro USB Host Mode OTG Cable, originally designed for the Samsung Galaxry devices - I got one as a bundle along with the swivel case & screen protector, etc. Inexpensive & it works - on 4.1.2 and on 4.2.1 depending on the rom & kernel.
One of them selling a pair for under $5, free shipping and they are based in the LAX area of CA, mine arrived in less than a week - vendor has been around for years and sourced them mostly from oversea. The short piece of connecting cable is a bit longer than picture but still fit flat & tight against the bottom/side of the N7 with the case, so it won't be too bad flying 6 or 10+ hours with my own huge library collection of DVD's on a stick. Not a vendor / product endorsement & plenty of sources to get yours, plus Amazon ...

Mine was quite difficult to find as it's a micro one end and mini the other, but I've located one and it's ordered. Thanks for the links guys. I'm in the uk, it seems to be particularly difficult to find the one I need here for some reason!
Just my $0.02 on the whole OTG thing though.... why can't it be that simple to just connect a usb device and for it to work like things used to?? Why the need for an adapter? Surely these keyboard cases should all be OTG wired for maximum compatibility as a keyboard is never going to be a host device!
Ho hum...
Then if i understand good i need otg cable to be able to connect my keyboard ! The problem is my keyboard is already micro usb and i just find
OTG micro usb to usb 2.0 .
How to do then ?
Well I'm glad I found this thread after a couple of hours of fruitless searching (& mostly getting stuff about flash drives).
I tried to connect a case logic mini usb keyboard which I acquired for the princely sum of ten bucks, by using the cable that shipped with the Nexus and a usb gender changer, but the tablet did not recognize the device. I've had no trouble hooking the tablet up to a pc for chrome debugging, file xfers etc, and I tested the mini kb on a couple of pcs.
I thought it was something like this OTG adaptor thing, but couldn't figure out what was special about it vs. bog-standard usb plugs. I ordered one along with a powered usb hub, in case that was the/another issue, and look forward to getting this thing to work.
Thanks!
Edit: Sweet! The OTG adaptor worked like a charm, and with a powered hub I can run a wireless mini-mouse too.
Hi guys, I know this thread is quite old, but I have very, very important problem:
I've recently bought the same built-in to case keyboard with two wires: micro and mini.
The problem is that the micro one connected to the Nook Tablet or HTC Sensation does not work (although in case of HTC Sensation it is detected!).
When I connect the same keyboard to my sister's no-name tablet (something-made-in-China) via miniUSB it works like a charm! With no adapters, nothing!
The question is: should I try to find OTG adapter (and if yes, then which one? miniUSB to microUSB, or rather microUSB to microUSB?) ?
Thanks in advance for all your replies...

OTG for the nexus 7 is a bit different in terms of hardware requirements. Pins 4 and 5 on the micro USB side have to be shorted together for it to work. You will likely need an OTG cable that says in the description that it is compatible with the Nexus 7. Amazon and eBay are decent places to go.

Hey, I bought the same keyboard, foolishly.
Is buying another cable the only way to get to work?
