Question about my S4 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys so I'm really confused about what my phone is. I know it's an S4 for sure. But when I go to the settings under model it says GT-I9505. But I take the battery out and on the sticker it says it's an SCH-I545. Even my back cover have the Verizon logo. But here is where it gets interesting. I bought the phone from a repair shop and it came SIM unlocked it has a sim card slot behind the back cover. I have used Walmart Family Mobile with it and am currently using StraightTalk (T - Mobile sim). So I don't know if I'm GSM or CDMA. Verizon is CDMA but the t-mobile sim I'm using is GSM. Someone please help. Thanks in advance.

Hello,
Probably it was an SCH-I545 and they repaired it with a GT-I9505 motherboard. Shutdown your phone, press and keep pressed Volume down + Home + Power keys, at the "WARNING" screen press Volume up and see the infos

Alright so i did as you said and its in ODIN MODE. The product name is SCH-I545.
Now that ive confirmed its Verizon how can it be that im using StraightTalk (T-Mobile) SIM?? I thought that CDMA phones cannot run on a GSM network.
Another question: Can i use any of the ROMS in the I9505 section or should i stick with the Verizon S4 section of XDA??

So odd, the I545 has a locked bootloader
By the way yes you can use any ROM from i9505 section, just make sure that are "jflte" and not "jfltexx"
I maintain a custom ROM based on CM12 as "jflte", so for any variant. For other ROMs I suggest to directly ask to the developer

In the phone's service menu it's possible to switch from CDMA to GSM. That explains how you can use your Straight Talk T-Mobile SIM in the phone.

Exactly, but the I9505 product code in device info is the odd part the bootloader is from Verizon, and since it's locked can't run I9505 kernel without using Loki. Maybe a build.prop modification

[Q] S4 MF3 Sim unlock??

I've for a AT&T S4 I337 with the MF3 update. I have already managed to root it. Is there any way to unlock the sim?? I have searched. Tried to get to the service menu and it does't let me do anything. Can I flash another rom or do something so I can unlock it.

Seeing how you are on the MF3 currently there is no way to flash another rom or custom recovery, your best bet would be go through att to get the unlock code.
But it won't even let me get into the service menu. I tried the codes and process they say online and it does nothing. Can someone explain why it won't budge and how and when it will be fixed?

The service menu unlock was disabled in MF3. You have to get an unlock code from your carrier or another service.

Theres not even a place to enter an unlock code. I cut my Straight talk sim with the proper tool and inserted it and it didn't even recognize it. Still says "no sim inserted." Going to try to buy a ATT straight talk sim from the Straight talk website next.
Unlock Code AT&T, they have no idea

I ported my # over from AT&T today to Straight Talk. At first it didn't like the new sim card, but after my # was ported and a few reboots the message didn't come up anymore. I now have phone & data service running on it, even though I was still under contract for a previous device (S3). I called AT&T and after a lengthy call, they said I didn't need an unlock code if I was getting service OK from Straight Talk. My old APN info is still there for them along with the one I created for 'ST'. I have no way of deleting the old APN, and who knows where, or if I'll get updates from. My only other option was to get the Google Edition S4, but I payed full price for the one I got now. Hopefully the bootloader issue will get cracked before long and I can get this ATT crap off my phone for good.
Network lock
I want to share something, could get passed the first screens all the way down to the network lock menu, no sha off options.
Haven't seen any posts regarding this.

Hey,
I did watch that video, but I am not sure how to get to that "Samsung Service Mode" Screen . Can you tell the steps please.
Thanks.
Ok, isnt that region lock thread just for Galaxy Note 3s? and on MF3, doesnt seem like the service menu will come up at all, so kinda curious too how people are making that work.

Hey did you guys talking about region unlock or carrier unlock?
Can you please share steps you followed, it will be a great help.
Thanks.
It's been mentioned that region unlock has had a positive affect on the Sim unlock.
However Sim unlock and region unlock are totally different from one another.I used the free unlock method when I was MDL and only used the region unlock with MF3 .will I ever really know if the region unlock worked?probably never.
I am still Sim unlocked

root ur phone and download the region unlock app on google play and done :fingers-crossed:
Again, the region lock claims for note 3... so if people say it works on S4.. why isnt it listed on the app? Would love some confirmation.

sprint galaxy S4 can't connect with Gsm sim

hi i live in Europe and i want only Gsm phone i don't care about cdwa or sprint network.my phone has 4.3 android MDC i made the unlock i found with galaxy s4 flashed and the only thing i manage was to go from ''invalid sim'' to sim connected without network no network.i have root the phone and now running cyanogen 11 but every time i try to choose GSM network i get ''android.phone.stop''.i had also try service menu unlock without success.any idea how can i get it work???should i keep sprint kernel and try to boot samsung i9505 rom??thanks all of you in advance!!!
Your best answer will come from asking this question in the unlock thread by autoprime. My guess is that you need APNs. Did you try menu unlock while on touchwiz or CM? From what I know you have to be on Touchwiz in order to access the hidden menu.

AT&T s4 unlocking

Can someone tell me how to unlock bootloader samsung s4 at&T version 4.2.2 . I have been trying to look around and find answers but came up with nothing. This phone has a unpaid bill attached to it and I'm thinking this should not affect me from using this on another carrier like straight talk. So can someone point me in the right direction..thanks
Wrong place. This is the Samsung Galaxy S4 for Sprint, not ATT.

You can't unlock the bootloader. If you mean SIM unlock, look in the General section for the various unlock threads. If you're on MDL, you can use the service menu, and if on MF3 use ReigonLockAway.

[Q] Buying Canadian model to use on AT&T?

Hello there,
Since the American versions of this phone seem to be bootloader locked, would it be possible to get the Canadian version, on say, Rogers, which isn't bootloader locked, and use it on AT&T? Would I get LTE this way as well? Thanks.
Absolutely. Should work no problem. Just add apn settings and simcard

Sorry to sound uninformed, but what is APN settings? Also, is there a more practical way to get an unlocked version from within the U.S. itself? Such as from T-Mobile?
I sold a Canadian HTC M7 from Telus on the US market with the bootloader unlocked but the new owner could not simply insert his SIM into the phone. It was SIM locked. Locked bootloader is completely different story than locked SIM (the device is locked to work only with a particular carrier's SIM). I had to get an unlock code and then worked. Be aware about this.
Here is your explanation:

Flashing

Hi!
I have had a Sprint S4 (SPH-L720) for quite a while, now. I SIM-unlocked it to work with Virgin Mobile / Bell (Canada).
How do I flash it to SGH-i337m using Odin? It always failed, so far. And I do not want to brick it.
Thanks =)

You can't coz are different devices. Don't try it more or you will own a paperweight.
Every phone is a different device.. I do not see your point, sorry.
Sent from my SGH-M919V using Tapatalk
@EvilKittyCupcake: The SPH-L720 is a CDMA device while the SGH-I337M is a GSM device. The different model numbers alone should be sufficient to tell you what you're trying to do is impossible. However, to enforce this both Odin and Kies only allow you to flash ROMs for the model of device you actually have by polling the device itself prior to flashing. Therefore, trying to flash an I337M ROM on a L720 will ALWAYS fail.
Attempting to force the issue may brick the S4, so stop trying it.
I flashed a M919V ROM on an i337M successfully despite them being different model numbers.

Sure sometimes it works. But there is absolutely no point in doing so.
The M919V and I337M are both GSM and are actually the same hardware, so that may be an instance where it actually works, although it shouldn't. As Lennyz1988 has noted, there's really no point to it. About the only reason someone would even try placing a GSM ROM on a CDMA device is to convert the phone to GSM so it can be used on a GSM network. Is that the reason you're trying this?

Yeah, that is the reason why =)

Flashing a GSM ROM to a CDMA device won't enable GSM. To change from CDMA to GSM requires working in the S4's service menus, which is not for the faint of heart. Don't ask me the steps involved either, because I don't know them. The one time I mucked around in the service menu, I lost my SIM unlock for a few days until I resolved the problem. I'm lucky that's all I lost, as I could have bricked my S4.
