Nexus 4 will not show up on Computer - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Nexus 4 when plugged in with 2 different cables (both capable of transferring MTP as tablet transfers files and connects as MTP just fine) don't do anything and just charge the phone . No "connected as a media device" notification. Checked settings and it's on debugging mode as well as MTP mode but still not being recognised and the same applies for PTP. Phone has been factory reset and still does not get recognised by computer. Device Manager doesn't pick up anything either. No ADB, Nexus 4 name in Device Manager. What's the problem and how can i get it to show up on computer as an MTP device? The phone's not rooted and is Android Version 5.0.1 Lollipop.

Sir,
Please wait until mods will move this thread to the device specific forum for more relevant answers.

Had the same issue my USB port on my Nexus 4 was going bad, but it was still charging the phone. I replaced the port and was back in business.

N4 will not show up as MTP in android
If you want to use MTP, it is supported in TWRP recovery.
Boot into TWRP recovery and you can view and transfer everything in N4 /root via windows explorer on PC.

mine once had MTP work flawlessly until i start to done this and that, now whatever i did only PTP works
boot to TWRP? sadly nothing work ?

If your bootloader is unlocked, you can flash or boot into TWRP recovery, it supports MTP.
If you have any connection problems between PC and TWRP MTP, it is likely driver related.
You will need to look in Device manager on PC while phone is connected.
Download the howto_driver.zip from the "15 seconds ADB Installer thread" and follow the picture tutorial contained in the zip file. This should fix your connectivity issues.
If you are sill having connection issues, You could try and install ADB drivers . It might help the pc detect.
64bit
32bit
Then go back through the picture tutorial in the howto_driver.zip
Best of luck

Nexus 4 Update
Took it to phone technician who replaced battery port on phone. He didn't do a good job on the reassembly of the Nexus 4 when replacing phone battery port and fixed it. Drivers install now.

N4 not showing up at all on PC

I'm not sure when this problem first appeared. For whatever reason, my phone doesn't show up at all when connected to either of my two PCs. It must have when I first rooted the phone (to load ChainSU) but I'm not sure if the problem is recent or occurred immediately thereafter.
USB debugging is disabled. When I plug my phone into a computer, it attempts to install the MTP Driver and fails. When I uninstall my device, it disappears and I'm unable to manually install the driver's I've downloaded from other threads. When I load into the Bootloader, my device is recognized by Fastboot.
I'm hesitant to factory reset as this will leave me unable to root if the problem persists, which is important to me as I can get rid of the yellow tint on this screen.
Any thoughts?
Edit: $10 via Paypal for anyone who successfully helps me to a solution!
Are you definitely sure usb debugging is disabled? The phone should install as a portable device on your pc. Also ensure to enter your password onto your phone when connected otherwise the phone will not show up its contents.
Make sure for windows media player to be updated to the latest, for the windows mtp driver.

There are a few things you can try. Have you tried uninstalling the drivers completely then reinstalling from the toolkit? In the past, I've had issues where the phone wouldn't be accessible in some way on one computer but would be fine on another, so maybe try a different computer to try to narrow down the problem as to whether it's an issue with the phone or the computer? Also, this may sound a bit ridiculous, but simply switching USB cables and / or ports has fixed detection issues for me in the past as well--something to consider.

Remove any existing drivers (while phone is connected), do the same for other android devices if you have any, then reboot and install Universal Naked Drivers. Have always had success with this driver pack.

100% sure on both counts.
I have this same issue with my rooted nexus 4, I've tried 3 different computers and several cables and it never connects to the PC and only charges the phone. It doesn't even give me option to choose media files.
I've had this issue before, my Nexus/Computer was acting in complete stupidity. When connecting the phone to your computer you will see a notification saying "Connected as a media device" on your phone, just touch it, and change it to "Camera (PTP)". It might access the camera for you, but It actually accessed the storage for me.

Thats not the problem, it doesn't give any option. It doesn't show up on the computer at all and only charges. It's the same for every computer.

I'm thinking we've screwed something up with the phone's side of the MTP protocol - mine is totally independent of the cord/computer used. All the correct drivers installed.
Have you tried Factory Resetting? I'm really hoping this is a workable option.

I had same problem on my pc yesterday. Even if the drivers installer showed up that installation was successful, somehow for a mtp mode system was using some other Microsoft driver. Correct one was only used in ptp mode. So when I connected n4 in mtp mode storage wasn't available, when I switched to ptp mode everything was fine. Turn on your usb debug, switch on mtp and connect. Go to device manager in system, find your nexus there and rmb on it and manually reinstall driver. After this my n4 is visible in system in mtp mode again.

The problem is that even if I switch between MTP and PTP it still does nothing, I have tried multiple cables, computers and have reflashed the ROM and wiped the device but it still does not connect with the PC. This is frustrating.

Is yours able to connect during Bootloader/Recovery? Fastboot/ADB have no trouble recognizing my device.
It's really odd that if these things work, meaning your USB connection is fine, replacing the all of software fixed nothing... unless MTP occurs at a much lower level of the OS (maybe kernel is corrupted?)
I've got a similar problem that others have posted - PCs not detecting my N4. I got it last Friday (2/1) from Google and after the registering process and updating to 4.2.1, I connected it to my Win7 laptop and it showed on the PC as a drive. But since I couldn't copy/paste Office docs to that drive and had to do that through Dropbox, I didn't bother trying to reconnect until Monday, at which time the PC didn't detect it. Neither will one other Win7 nor two XP (both with WMP10) PCs. Have tried multiple cables, all of which work with other Android devices (pre 3.0). I've seen several suggestions on this and other threads, but one major issue I'm having is that some of the fixes require enabling USB Debugging. For the life of me I can't find that option in the N4's Settings. Unlike my other phones, there is no Applications subcategory under Settings on my N4 (4.2.1, Build JOP40D). Can anyone help me find that option? TIA.
Edit - Found answer. Click on Build in About Phone setting 7 times. That activated Developer options. Now to try the fixes which require USB Debugging mode turned on.

PC no longer recognizes Nexus 4: USB driver failure

Problem: USB driver failure for Nexus 4. The android composite USB driver loads. Portable device driver (MTP) does not.
I have the latest v7 Google USB drivers in the extras 4.2.2 SDK folder, and pointing the driver install to this folder has worked in the past. Now, I never get the portable device MTP to install. I have both windows 7 and windows 8 machines that used to recognize the phone. I suspect my phone USB firmware is corrupted ( or something else software related?), but don't know how to find or make a zip file I can flash via custom recovery to test my theory.
I've tried multiple USB cables, all which have worked in the past. Simultaneously, I can only charge at USB rate. This all started occurring a week ago.
Any recommendations?

A different Nexus 4 connects fine, mine has no response to USB. It will charge off the PC, but no adb device found, no fastboot device found, no portable device MTP. I think something is wrong with my USB firmware on the phone.

User failure in this case, install these drivers from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998650. Delete all excisting usb drivers and then reconnect to usb and prevent/stop windows from installing drivers. Open device manager in windows and select the N4 and install the 0.72 drivers and you`re done.

I'm having the same problem, ADB, MTP none of it works, I've tried every method including yours. Worst part of it is that nothing happens in the device manager when i plug in Nexus 4 so i can't update drivers manually too. It used to work great with both MTP, ADB etc. Stopped working all of a sudden...Help please anyone. The phone is pretty much useless without MTP or ADB for me.
I too,, have tried to clear all old drivers and use the universal driver, but nothing works. I went through the tedious windows 8 advanced startup to allow unsigned drivers.

I'm going through the same thing with my Nexus 4.
No response to USB, except charging.
No ADB, No Fastboot, No MTP nothing at all, it's as if the system detects only a device that uses power from the USB port and nothing else.

It was the same with my phone. Wasn't detected on other computers too.
Here's what led to the problem resolution (kinda):
1. Formatted /system, /data, /cache, and flashed CM 10.1.2: http://get.cm/get/jenkins/34261/cm-10.1.2-mako.zip
2. Restarted the phone, then I came upon this forum post which mentioned that Trickster MOD Kernel Settings should be used to test for fast charge.
3. To install Trickster Mod I had to have Play Store (and thus the GApps package), so I rebooted into recovery.
4. After flashing the GApps package and rebooting the phone got detected and I was back in business.
5. Immediately flashed the factory image JDQ39 (it was the one I had available at the time.
6. Received the 4.3 OTA update about an hour ago and the phone is again back to not functioning on USB.
(Worth mentioning here that before this fiasco started, I was on CM 10.1.2, linked above.)
-- Update --
Rebooted a few times, phone appears on USB now and is there consistently, I'm beginning to think this is a hardware issue but I cannot apply for a warranty claim until the problem is consistent enough.
I've been having the same problem the last few weeks. I am on v4.3 stock. The phone is not being detected in any computer i've tried. I've used several USB cords and none of them work. The phone can be charged, but only in USB mode, so charging is slow, even when using AC charger.
I think this problem was triggered by charging on a cheap car charger. The Nexus 7 also can get into this state from what i've been reading.
I haven't come across a fix yet, so I think I'm going to RMA it before the warranty runs out.. its to bad though, I think this is a software problem related to 4.3. I used a lot of cheap chargers without this problem coming up before upgrading to 4.3.

Tried that. I also replaced the USB flexible circuit card ($25 amazon) and nothing changed. I'm glad their are people like xDA member, enfrant, that provides zip files for updating the phone, else I'd be stuck with a non- updateable nexus 4, which would be a nightmare for a flash junkie.

Very basic step but I've seen it being missed before:
- Go to Settings
- Storage
- Menu > USB computer Connection
- Check Media Device(MTP)
If this was not checked, checking it will make your computer download the necessary drivers if not present already.

[Q] USB and recovery problems after OTA upgrade to 4.3

I took the OTA to 4.3 on my Nexus 7. It was previously unlocked and rooted, but had no kernels, etc changed. After the update ran, I lost root as expected, however, in trying to get it back, I've discovered I'm having a couple of other issues.
First, the device is no longer working properly via USB on my PCs. On both my Win 7 and Win 8 PCs, the device won't properly connect to where I can browse files or anything else. On the Win 8 computer, I see a Nexus 7 device in Device manager, but drivers won't install. I downloaded the drivers from the Asus site, but trying to manually install them doesn't work on the Win 7 machine, and on the Win 8 machine, they install but don't seem to be working with the Nexus 7 as it still shows a problem in Device Manager.
The tablet also will not boot into recovery mode. I can power it up into fastboot mode, but if I select "Recovery Mode" and hit the power button, I just got the Android with the red triangle for a few minutes before it boots back into the OS. After doing some searching, I saw where you might need to have it plugged into a PC to get it to go into recovery, but that doesn't work, either (might be tied to the USB problem).
Ideas?
Did you turn on developer options, and USB debugging? Have you tried USB connection type PTP instead of MTP?
If you have the stock recovery, the red triangle and Android are normal. You can bring up a blue options menu by pressing the power and volume up buttons from the red triangle Android.

Try another driver source. Wugfresh's installation is a lot tougher than Skipsoft's, but try the other guy 's system.

Without USB access? That's my dilemma.
OK, I'm getting closer. I got TWRP installed and rerooted it. I had to do the "Revoke USB debugging authorizations" on the Dev Options screen. Then it would work via ADB.
Still not browsing files yet on my desktop, but at least I know I'm talking to it. So now I'll play with the driver installation a bit.
EDIT: Well, drivers reinstalled for about the 4th time, and it's still not allowing me to browse files from my desktop. Galaxy S4 works fine as soon as I plug it in, even if I also uninstall it's drivers. Ideas? I obviously have it working over USB because I can give it commands and reboot it via the PC.
OK, try this one. Plug in your tablet to pc, go to hardware manager, find your Android Device then choose Uninstall (choose Remove all drivers for this device), unplug and plug in your tablet again. Your Windows should discover few new devices (mine has discovered three) and download drivers for them then you should see Android ADB Interface in Android Devices and Nexus 7 in Mobile Devices.

After you plug your nexus in have you unlocked the screen to see if it is asking you to authorize the tablet?
What other steps have you taken? Have you installed proper drivers? Have you manually chosen to update drivers with the sdk drivers if in device manager is showing the nexus? Have you tried the drivers from Asus?

I personally did all of those things. After having the Nexus "forget" all the other PC authorizations on the dev screen, I finally got it to accept ADB commands, just not to properly install drivers that would allow me to browse files like it had done on 4.2.

For some of the computers. Today I'm at work and I don't have the drivers installed. I keep my phone plugged in to charge. In the past the PC, running windows XP, always pops up the new device found notification. It won't even do that except for the 1 time mentioned earlier.
it it possible for the recovery image to affect things?
Mine won't show up in my PC (windows 8) If USB debugging is off. I'm fairy certain this behavior started at some point during the rooting process because I had a hell of a time getting the files to the phone.

From what I noticed, when you use a lockscreen with some kind of protection the device memory will not show up if it hasnt't been unlocked in the past few minutes or before connected. This is mostly for security reasons to make sure you are the one accesing the device..
I am not sure if this is the source of the problem you are mentioning but just to let you know

FWIW, I have encountered odd connection issues with my Nexus 4 running bone-stock Android.
As I recall, it won't connect to ADB in MTP mode. In PTP mode, it usually works. Personally, I just said "screw it" and starting using MyPhoneExplorer for everything.
Enable USB debugging in your phone. Nuff said.
nothing works, PTP, debugging on/off, etc.
well I finally got a hold of my wife N4, it connects just fine. so I think it's definitely a hardware issue.
Ifixit shows how to replace the daughter board.....but I'd rather send it to LG for warranty replacement but I have it rooted.
If I could just get it to connect once more I would flash it back to stock.

[Q] Computer no longer recognizes Nexus on USB

For some reason, I can no longer get any computer to recognize my Nexus 4 when connected by USB. I can charge but cannot get the phone recognized.
A couple weeks ago, everything was working fine. I was running Cataclysm (November build based on 4.3). I upgraded to the Nexus 5 and decided to give the Nexus 4 to my daughter. I was able to connect the Nexus 4 to the computer and move all my photos and music etc off of the phone. After moving my files off and doing a Titanium backup and Nandroid just in case, I did a complete wipe on CMW (6.0.3.5). Everything fired up fine and I had no reason at the time to test the USB.
However, last week, my daughter was complaining about bad battery life and I decided to take a look and go ahead and update the phone to the latest (Dec. 12) Cataclysm build based on 4.4.2. Before flashing the new build, I connected the phone to the computer by USB but could not get the computer to recognize the phone. The phone charges, but is not recognized in device manager and does not connect.
I've done everything I can think of to troubleshoot the issue - all without luck - including:
Turned USB debugging on and off. No luck.
Changed the USB storage mode from MTP to PTP and back. No luck.
Confirmed fast charging isn't somehow enabled. It isn't.
Tried several different USB cables. No luck.
Tried a different Nexus 4 and my Nexus 5 on the same computer. They work.
Tried the subject phone on a different computer running Windows. No luck.
Tried the subject phone on a computer running Mac OS. No luck.
I did go ahead and flash the latest Cataclsym build (I did a full wipe again) but sill no change. I don't see any evidence of physical damage to the micro USB port but I took a small toothrush and gently cleaned the contacts with rubbing alcohol.
At this point, I believe the problem is either the a) the port is bad or b) somehow, the phone software/ROM is screwed up.
Is there any way to determine whether the physical port is bad? Any other ideas. I'm kind of at the end of my capability here.
can adb recognize it?
Code:
adb devices

I don't think so. I'll have to check tonight when I get home. I tried to get Wug's toolkit to recognize the phone with no luck but haven't tried that command on its own.

No luck. I attached the Nexus 4 to the computer, entered a command prompt to navigate to the platform tools director that has the adb files and entered the "adb devices" command. The response was "List of devices attached" with no phone (or anything else) listed.
I have that issue too. I´m on windows 8 and to root and being able to recognize by the pc I changed it to PTP. It only works in PTP and I have to pass all the data to the camera folder to send info

I don't think I've got the same issue. I cannot get any computer to recognize the phone under any mode (storage, photo, debugging on, debugging off). Nada. At this point, I'm pretty sure it's the port gone bad. I just wiped the phone again and clean flashed the stock 4.4.2 ROM, radio and bootloader. Still no connection.
Argh.

I had this problem and i found away to fix it. Plugin your phone to a computer. Start > right click on my computer > properties > device manager. Look for Samsung > expanded it you will find Nexus 4. Right click on it and choose uninstall and check uninstall driver. Unplug your phone and restart the computer. Re-plug the phone and wait for the drivers to install.
