I have just successfully got Amazon to downgrade my Kindle HDX 7" from 4.5.3 to 3.2.8 and have used Towelroot successfully too.

Safestrap not working
Yeah sorry guys. Been stupidly busy. I'll put a walk through re what I did and some screenies as soon as I can get the time. All good though, know using Go Launcher and Go Lockscreen. All seem to be working flawlessly with Google apps all installed too. Also used Titanium Pro to disable Lockscreen Ads.
Hi having trouble signing in to Google play¿ Can you do a little guide?
So. All I really did .that facilitated this was the downgrade. The rest was simple. Frankly if you don't have to go to Amazon for the downgrade you're on the home straight.
Once rooted via Towelroot I used Titanium Backup to 'freeze' the Special Offers apk.
Install Gapps and rebooted.
Then I Installed Go Launcher (bought it actually) as Nova launcher didn't change the wallpaper.
Finally installed Go Lockscreen to bypass the lack of images on the touchscreen after removing the ads.
I'll upload some screenies if you like?

@myotai What version of Towelroot did you use (to work on 3.2.8)? And pardon my noobiness but would you mind explaining what "I used Titanium Backup to "freeze" the Special Offers apk" means? Thanks for your guide.

This version will work fine.
"Special Offers apk" one of the components that displays Amazon promotions on the lock screen. Titanium Backup can be used to disable ("freeze") applications so they can't run. Other tools can do this too. This is a UI refinement and not necessary for 4.5.3 -> 3.2.8 rollback.

I have been seeing a lot about the "build.prop" file and needing to have the right permissions set on it. I'm not sure what that file does or when you need to worry about it. Does it come into play with a 4.5.3 downgrade to 3.2.8 running Safestrap and Sock ROM/Nexus ROM?

No, it is not necessary for this downgrade. And, without a custom recovery, if it gets corrupted, you are probably bricked.
Build.prop is a file that neatly lays out a bunch of running constraints for the operating system.
So, follow the downgrade directions and you will be happiest leaving build prop alone.
Good luck.

Hi there,
I got the N10 and I have run out of space already, so I bought a OTG cable and a 256GB USB stick, so I can load all the music and movies I need on the drive.
So I connect everything and no luck, so I try and std. 8GB stick and same issue.
Then I start reading and find that the best solution for me is probably Stickmount, or something similar, but I need to root my device to use it.
So here is my question:
I am happy to have the stock N10 SW installed and do not really need to load custom ROMs.
I would like to receive future std. OTA updates
So how do I root my device and maintain the requisites above. I have never rooted a device and do not know much about the process, so I would really appreciate detailed info/step-by-step info... I have access to a PC, but use a mac, so is there a SW solution for mac to root?
Ps. what are the downsides of rooting, if done as I requested? and What are the typical Nuub mistakes?
Many thanks,
Nick
You can use an app called Nexus Media Importer to mount an external USB drive without root.
Use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2003938.
This gives you root without unlocking and OTA should works.
Don't bother part that unlock is necessary - is not (for me and others is not - you must try by yourself).
For drivers use Universal Naked one.
Good luck!

Just kidding.
It's very easy to both root and unlock. You also open up a whole other side of apps that aren't available to you on stock
Good luck

OK, I followed the thread and rooted my gn10.. I also downloaded an app that let's me lock and unlock my boot loader without wiping the device...
If I still want to get the ota updates, what do I need to do/what mode do I need to leave it in to make sure I get them? Locked or unlocked? And will it be an issue the my device is rooted?
Also, what is the latest gn10 ROM available? I have 4.2.1. Is it worth upgrading and if so, which is the best ROM out there and how do I find it and install it?
Many thanks for all your help!

To receive the OTA updates you don't have to do anything except check when they're available! 4.2.2 is the latest, within you may want to check if it's available.
Rooting simply lets you access the root of the device, it won't stop updates or anything similar. If you update to 4.2.2 OTA you may lose root, you can easily get it back by using the same instructions as you followed to root it in the first place, or use the toolkit. Or you might not lose it, and either way it's no big deal, you can always check to see if you have it anyway.
Custom roms are more daunting but they're really not that hard, if you feel up to the task you will have to make sure you have an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery installed, then it's just a case of wiping the device and installing it. There are loads of videos on YouTube that can help you do it, and and countless threads on here. Paranoid android is my favourite, if you install a custom rom kiss OTA updates goodbye, when a new version is released it usually comes with all the updates.
Question directed at OP: Where/which OTG cable did you get? I'm considering one so I can hook into my external media HDD.
I spent my earlier part of this evening making this with a tool. It's an aroma installer package and for those who don't know what that is it's a mod which gives u an extra GUI in recovery and allows you to pick what mods you want to install. It's limited right now and read all here before messing up your device and coming back to report an error you made.
Disclaimer:I'm not responsible if your phone explodes, shocks you or melts or whatever.Do this at your own risk if there really are any.
The first version of this mod has 3 sections.
-You'll find root apps.Framaroot, root tools and xposed installer.Choose if you want them.
-You'll find nodo camera mod(don't use if you aren't on stock),and the xperia gallery app and more in the app section.Don't install oppogallery2 if your not on the stock rom except you want to try and you know how to revert.
-The clock widget section is a choose one only option to choose between the Oppo green, red, yellow clock widget respectively.Don't choose the 3 or you'll end up with the yellow.I included the order in the title so you don't have to remember.(due to renaming issues I had with the aroma compiler you need to go into /sytem/app and rename any oppodigitalclockwidgetG or r to "OppoDigitalClockWidget.apk")
This is the beginning and I'll add more and keep the package apps updated.
Hit thanks to say thanks and happy flashing. This are all compiled by me so if you share give me credit.

go read Somewhere what is an aroma installer and what is its purpose.Don't bug the thread. Read and understand before posting.
all I am saying is this thing serves no purpose. none of these things require recovery to install so you've effectively only increased the complexity of installing them.

It's an all at once install package of all those apps. I maybe doing debloating very soon and ur comments are just discouraging me. There is more to the power of aroma and I started with apps only.

A debloating script would be a welcome alternative to installing Color Mod
although, may I suggest, we keep the debloating script and the bloating script separate?

Thanks for the aroma installer, add as many options as you can, I really appreciate it myself. I really don't see why their should be any complaints at all, the aroma installer is a very good option. If you don't want the mod that is in the aroma installer then don't select to install it. I don't think some people know what aroma is, and how Dev's make things easy for a lot of people with this tool and really how nice of a tool that it is. It really makes things very simple to add mods and apps and do so much more with your device in a very easy way, its as easy as it gets to be able to select what mods, apps, and so many other options in one simple to use tool. keep the installer going add whatever and as much as you can, and once again thank you for your time and hard work.

Why?
Why? Because root is not fully functional yet. Not every "root" app works, only some. Apps that allow reboot, bootloader, power off, and recovery do not even work and if they do (not aware any do) they require a huge effort in "give and take" with getting everything permissive.
In all honesty, most of us are waiting for CF to accomplish what only he seems to be able to do... Achieve 100% permissive root access. Only "Custom" builds are even halfway to achieving anything and it's STILL due to CF's work...
*popped* my, got to be 100th user account, cherry for ya!
I flashed supersu beta 19 and have full root and have reboot manager and that works perfect so maybe just use that for time being

Holo reboot works fine, but I just prefer native options. I also have root running perfectly fine after running cf autoroot, so I'm not exactly sure what root problems anyone is talking about. I get some methods don't work, but it's not like root is unobtainable.
for the meantime I just use terminal emulator until android L can be fully rooted.
All you can do now is wait for custom rom or support from xposed

I've thought about grabbing one from another nexus's custom rom but I didn't want to bother wasting my time if it didn't work. thanks!
After taking a look, the rom linked is deodexed, and I much more prefer odex, as I said in the OP. If you know a way to odex this I'd be grateful, because every method I've known in the past to odex a rom says it won't work with lollipop (I assume because of the new file structure /system/app, /system/app-priv, etc.)

/system/app and /system/priv-app existed in KitKat as well. /system/app always existed; ICS, JB etc.
What's so special about odex? Sure it might run a little faster, but I don't understand that kind of repression.

Folders for each individual app did not exist before LP. Also, app-priv was not around before KK. However, the new structure to which I was referring is the new folder for each individual apk.
And I want it ODEXED because I use the factory image as my daily rom. It's that simple. I want a mod I can flash after a factory image with absolutely no hassles, like having to deodex an entire rom just for one mod. Also, yes....ODEX is faster, the battery life is better, the rom is overall smoother, and much more stable. Since I do as minimal modifications possible (like basically just this) deodexed roms offer me absolutely no benefit from the ease of modification.... and since this is their biggest perk, coupled with the fact that I use factory images anyway, I see absolutely no reason whatsoever to need a deodexed mod (or rom)
I didn't think I would ever have to explain why I would want it....jeez....back in the day I would have had 4 mods posted at this point and not one person would have questioned my motives.
Is it what you're looking for ?

Thanks for the discovery! I'm sure it'll save a ton of people the hassle of having to downgrade and upgrade to get onto 4.5.2.
This likely also means that it'll work on the Fire HD 6 and 7.

Generic nature of this pup suggest it should also work with 4.5.4 unless Amazon has taken explicit steps to block. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. There is not a lot of western buzz around Kingroot and other mainstream boards haven't pumped it (yet). Certainly one to watch.

I would not recommend adb install. The steps once rooted would be the same as with 3rd gen devices. Adb install is more risky.

Congrats! No custom recovery on 4.x as bootloader remains locked. Keep in mind stock recovery is next to useless...careful what you do with root.

Looks like something is different on the fireos packaged with the 4th gen HDX, I guess that why previous gen freezes their ota or downgrade; they don't want to break it
Idea ideas ?

How to enable multi-window in Android 6 Marshmallow:
There is a workaround to get split view mode on your smartphones, if you have rooted your device. To activate multi-windows in your devices, here are the steps you need to follow:
- Install Marshmallow on your Android smartphone.
- Root your device
- From Google Play Store, install a file manager app with root access.
- Open the newly installed file manager app and grant it root permission.
- Go to /system/ directory and open build.prop file.
- Inside the file, change the value of build type from user to userdebug.
- Save the build.prop file.
- Reboot your device.
- Once back, enable Developer Options: go to Settings > About Phone > tap on Build Number seven times.
- Go back to Settings > Developer Options > go to the bottom of the Drawing category and enable Multi-window from the options.
- Congrats.

It had worked for me...thanks

Yes I know, but multi window NEED root, Sorry anyway.
Didn't find the file in buildprop to change to userdebug but did flip on multiwindow in developer options.
How will I know if it's working? How to make it work now that it's turned on?
