Any custom rom brings black screen - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Whenever I try to install a custom rom with Safestrap, it doesn't even get to the boot animation; it just goes to a black screen. The touch lights on the bottom of the phone are lit for like 5 seconds, then go out. What do I do?

I don't know what the problem is. But what I'd do is flash the stock firmware in Odin again. Then root and reinstall safestrap and try again. But it would help to know what roms you tried to install. You can only install roms that specifically work with safestrap

I still have the stock firmware. The roms I tried were two different Google Edition roms, Kangpop, and Hyperdrive.

First you need to use safestrap as your recovery. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56453100
Then you can only flash touch wiz based roms. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53758227
All of this can be found in the general forum

Even TW based roms give me a black screen... guess I'll have to stick with stock...

Unless anybody else has any ideas?

[Q] Can't run custom rom

Alright ive kinda hit a wall im not sure what i can do i can't seem to get my s4 to flash to any custom roms. just picked it up it came with the latest MF9, ive followed the instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2257101 to get root access and to install twrp. i can get it all to install just fine and have verified that i have root access. but once i flash a custom rom ie. CM 10.1 or even Slim mod either through goomanager it will say it installs successfully but once it reboots the new rom splash screen shows up and just sits there forever spinning and it never goes any further.
ive even restored my device to factory and unrooted the device and im still unable to get any roms to load up. am i missing anything that someone might be able to point out
heres the steps ive tried or gone thru
1. CF-autoroot via odin
2. install Twrp or CWM either thru odin or their manager aps
3. copy rom and gapps to sd card
4. boot to recovery and try to install
5. get stuck at splash screen!!!!
You probably need to install a compatible kernel. If the Rom doesn't include one that's the problem.

If you want a good aosp rom try this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43120823 it is very stable and awsome except there aren't much customization options update your recovery first then wipe data, system, and cache then flash the rom. [Q] Which bootloader do I have?

Is there any easy way to tell without being able to boot fully? There isn't anything immediately obvious on google. I'm trying to help out a friend, his phone doesn't get past the boot animation anymore and he doesn't know which version he has. I can boot into download/recovery modes but don't see anything that screams MF3, MK2 or any of the others.
Updates: I can get to sideload but don't know if I can install any Roms through sideload without a custom recovery. The recovery right now is stock 3e I think.

Can't do anything from there. If recovery doesn't say NB1 in the corner then it's something before that. Only other way is to just try and flash only part of each one through Odin.

He was rooted at one point and then unrooted. Never any custom roms/recoveries. The phone was working after he unrooted it but for some reason will no longer pass the boot animation.
He was on android 4.3 so does that only correspond to MK2? As far as I can tell it does.

Do you know if he took any ota updates? My opinion is you should just flash the nb1 tar file in Odin. It's doesn't sound like he is still on mdl firmware.Which would be the only reason he'd not want to go to nb1

If he's not on mdl you're not going to get cm or any aosp rom. Nb1 is no more restrictive than mf3, or mk2. In any case you'll have to use safestrap and only touch wiz based roms.

[Q] Screen broken, need to uninstall custom recovery and ROM

Just had my phone screen crack completely and totally, making it impossible to see anything but black in the screen. I plan to exchange it for a refurbished version with my insurance plan, but I need to uninstall Safestrap, the custom recovery, the custom ROM and possibly Towelroot.
Will I be able to overwrite the custom recovery using Odin in the download mode? Is there anything I can do without having access to the screen?

I don't need to uninstall Safestrap through the app within the OS? Will using Odin and a stock rom remove the need for this?
I read somewhere someone was still getting the Safestrap screen during boot up even after they've removed the custom flash without using the app within the OS.

How Can I Install A Custom Recovery On OC3 5.0.1?

Now that Xposed is compatible with Samsung TW ROMS, I'd like to install Xposed on my S4 with 5.0.1 Lollipop and OC3. I need a custom recovery to install Xposed, so how can I do it?
