Need help restoring from Nandroid backup - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, it's my first time posting so I do apologize if I posted this in the wrong thread.
So I recently flashed the latest CM12 Nightly Rom for my S4 I9505. But I realised I needed to restore my backup (which I did with Nandroid before I flashed the ROM). So I went to CWM Recovery, tried to restore with the backup I did.
Everything was fine until I got this : "Error while restoring /system". I thought maybe the one in the phone was corrupted so i copied the one from my PC and still i get this error.
I'm hoping someone can help me on this.
Thanks!

just follow the following steps
1. full wipe data+dalvik cache
2. copy your backup to pc
3. open nandroid.md5 in notepad
4. delete everything and save it
5. now copy the backup to sdcard and restore it.
Enjoy
Hit thanks if I helped you.

I hope the nandroid backup (you did before flash the custom ROM) wasn't of one STOCK Rom :fingers-crossed:.

Oh it was.. does that mean I'm kinda screwed?

there is no issue in restoring nandroid backup of stock roms.
but recovery may be an issue.

Don't be.
1. Reflash stock Rom via ODIN, root and custom recovery.
2. Flash Custom ROM then again. But don't restore the backup you did before.
3. Done.

I may be wrong , but I have restore nandroid backup of stock roms many times.
I didn't even faced a single issue.

Hi, I tried what you suggested, deleting everything in nandroid.md5. And I manage to restore it.
But now there is another problem. this message "unfortunately the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped" pops up almost every 5 seconds. Any idea how to fix this?

Sure? Restoring nandroid backups of stock roms to CUSTOM ROMS?? I don't think so bro . Anyway you can help @chaos03 better than me . Good luck :highfive:

First, remove your Google account (no big deal, you can sign back in in a few minutes). Then, go to Settings>Apps>All> Scroll down to the G's until you get the first thing that has Google in it's name. The first one on my phone (galaxy nexus, CM) is called "Google Account Manager". Click on it and hit "Clear Data". Repeat this process for everything Google in the list. Now sign back into your Google account. You should never see that message again!
Hit thanks if I helped you!

clear cache and data of all google apps

I'm trying to do as you said, but the problem is the message pops up again the moment i dismiss it, and i cant even do anything else (only able to switch the phone on and off). And I also notice that some apps are starting to crash too.. is it possible to first flash an official Stock Rom and then do a restore?

maybe or maybe not
but I will suggest u to restore it once again and then do a factory reset , maybe it will work.
restoring it after installing stock will be always an option, but can't guarantee that you will not face the com.gapps.... has stopped working error.
.
---------- Post added at 12:10 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:10 AM ----------
r u recieving this single error or there are more apps crashing
?

This error and also error messages for some of the apps that say the apps stopped working.
I'm just worried that the backup is corrupted (Praying hard that it isnt the case)
Oh btw I'm using a CWM from ROM Manager version 6.0.4.7, I did some reading and they say there's a chance that it doesnt work well with Samsung phones. Do you think I should use another?

there is one more option also, which I think may work
just download gapps package from the given link and flash it using recovery
make sure you choose the right package as per your android version

I tried to reflash three times and get same message and its on the stock recovery not CWM so now I can't restore to my last backup Please help.
Have you tried and flash a different update-- that update you downloaded might be bad

sounds like you did not wipe date and cache.try that if no luck.
Format partitions wipe then reinstall.
If you don't understand the procedure look again where you downloaded the rom its explained very well.

Definately go to Mounts, and do a format.
Unfortunately, you cooked your custom recovery.
Try this;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
Method 2. This will give you the unstable version. But you can run Iconia root, acer recovery, then, flash the stock image.
But this time, before you flash it, please do the 3 wipes, and Mounts format.
Or, you can just leave it at the unstable rom and turn it in.
Next time, wipe your mess beforehand...

[Q] "com.google.process.gapps message wont dissapear

Hi everyone! I recently decided to install the 4.4.2 rom on my Galaxy Note 3 N9005 and I didn't like it because it obviously was buggy as ,entioned in the thread. So I wanted to go back to my nandroid backup which I had made before installing the rom. It all went right in CWM and no errors, so I rebooted my phone and got stuck at the glowing samsung logo, so after many fixes and things I tried which didn't work I flashed a pre-rooted stock rom for it and it all went well. I managed to restore to my nandroid finally and then I unlock my phone to find a "com.google.process.gapps has been stopped" message which wont go away when I tap "OK". It just comes back and gives me one second untill it comes back again. I really need help since I need my phone for work, I have tried reinstalling all the gapps, wont work, I have tried reflashing the stock rom and restoring my nandroid again, I have tried deactivating "Downloads" in the app manager but that wont fix it either and finally I have tried clearing the "app data" for all my apps but again, no luck. If anyone would be able to help me I would appriciate it very much. Thanks in advance!
You're probably gonna have to go back to complete stock. Grab your stock image and flash via odin, boot it up and see if it gives you the error without installing custom recovery and your backup. That way you'll know where the error lays.

Forgot to mention but when I return to complete stock there isn't such a message, only when I restore to my nandroid. I also tried restoring from an older backup which I had made like 2 months ago and the same problem remains, "com.google" message is still there. Any suggestions or should I just start over?

Sounds like a dodgy backup or it somehow got corrupted, I'd start over to save any headaches for future reference -- It's a headache I know, but safer I think. You could hang five, see if anyone else chimes in with any other ideas though

A nandroid backup is simple but monolithic. Most people also use Titanium Backup for the ability to restore selective stuff, or to restore to a completely different model of phone.
I had same issue
Bith titanium and nandroid restore.
Well only way to save your self. Completing wizard of first startup with feeling google..
And just restore user apps and data with titanium except google stuff..
This is the only healthy restore method so far i know that gapss.com keeps kool

So I somehow managed to go to settings and disable Play Services with the one second time line that I had before the message appears again, and the message stopped. So it must be something with Play Services. Since i'm new to android (and the Note 3 is my first android phone) I want to ask if there is a way to maybe reinstall Plaay Services?

Hi, there! I just got almost the same issue like you. Once update to custom 4.4.2, any nandroid backups which worked right before getting GAPPS' FC constantly. :crying: Try double wipes, flash 4.3 gapps full package, stop&restart android download, uninstall google play store update, etc. nothing can fix it. Only way stop the popup error, is flash stock rom. But, consequently, lose root access, even with the same method that rooted the stock rom before. I'll heard some guy said the 4.4.2 has different partition from 4.3 or older android rom. But don't mention how to restore the old partition way. So, hope anyone can help us out, thanks a lot.

SM-T350 Internal Storage Problem *Please Help*

Hello, it seems as if my internal storage has unmounted/is missing the last thing I think I was doing before I encountered this problem was either installing a custom boot animation, or spoofing my devices model & Mac address. I tried restoring default Mac and other device information, and even running some commands in terminal emulator and nothing worked. Any help would be much appreciated.

You can solve most problems by simply flashing stock rom. You should probably get twrp installed on your sm-t350 to get nandroid backups.

So I made my nandroid backup, and after the backup was complete I tried to reboot to my device and it went straight back to recovery. I tried restoring the backup i just made but then upon trying to reboot, it said "No OS installed, are you sure you want to reboot?", I clicked yes, and instead of it going into a boot loop or booting to my device it went straight back into recovery. I used the TWRP file manager and all my files and my SD card is still present so no operating system clearly isnt true. got any suggestions?
Also i dont have access to my computer for the next couple of hours

Your files are not on the same partition as the OS. If twrp says you don't have an OS then you've wiped it. It will boot to recovery if you have no OS.
Install the stock firmware with odin.

Can I restore my phone or am I screwed?

I used the Moto G5 toolkit I found on here to root my phone (it's been forever since I last rooted, and it seemed like a simple, fast method), and I backed up my phone via the android backup option. It saved as a .ab file, is it possible to restore my phone to what it was before restoring/rooting last night (pre-root)? Skimming around, it's looking unlikely. Is there any way to get my phone somewhat back to what it was before? Unfortunately my grandma was signed into my account on an old tablet I gave her, and her stuff backed up via google, so I'm out of luck in that department.. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

A very STRANGE Redmi Note 7 PROBLEM

Hello,
i seem to have badluck this time with custom rom and development for this device. Last i was struggling with encryption problem (when the great @DarthJabba9 showed me the right path) and now a strange thing happened.
So when i successfully booted into xiaomi.eu (latest) first time without encrypting my recovery function, everything was working fine and good, until i installed whatsapp provided all the permissions then suddenly it didnt look for my backup and acted like there was no backup (i nearly got a heart attack) and after setting up the name and so, i got to know it cant create backup, nor do anything which involve the use of internal storage because it is not writing nor reading internal storage, then i backoff and flashed back 11.6.0 stable, whatsapp start working normally, tried again with other xiaomi.eu and miglobe versions - failed same result, whatsapp only working in stable 11.6.0 and not working in other roms. Also, search function didnt work for me this time (so i found out i am the only one with this problem). does any body has a fix other than telling me to unsinstall, reinstall, clearing data etc.
- except whatsapp everything is working fine (TILL NOW)
Oh....please.....nobody has a clue???

You can try a modded whatsapp like Fouad whatsapp. It might solve the issue + extra goodies. Search it on web.
Make sure you backup your chats before uninstalling the app.

Strange. Really hard to blind guess what might be the issue. Guess you should try using an aosp based rom.

Whatsapp does not block you if you ask for otp multiple times in a day. It will restrict the sms for some hours after three attempts i guess, after that you can get it via call. Four times is enough for a day.
And having my number would not help as I wont be giving you the otp.
probably you use deep clean and erase the WP data.
