Just thought you guys would be keen to know - after chasing it up with Acer New Zealand, they have confirmed the kernel source will be released on the 22nd of this month, so that's exciting news.

What form of communication and how reliable is the information?
great news...
but, where is the source ?
any link ?
btw, just 6 days to go then
So, that'll be just in time for 3.1 then, and probably a different kernel!
I hope they release the 3.1 kernel source a bit quicker...
I opened a support task which quoted the license they include on the device back to them, and politely asked where I could take them up on the offer of source code. I made it very clear I was talking about the kernel, and not honeycomb as a whole.
They passed it up the chain straight away, and then came back to say the reoly they'd had was that it would be placed on the Acer website on the 22nd of this month. I'll screenshot the support task in a moment.
I think it will be 3.0.1 not 3.1 though.
Here you go, screenshot of the support task here. I think I've shopped out all my details, but in case I haven't and someone spots something, please let me know! I'm always paranoid with posting screenshots...
Crap, totally didn't. One second...
There, got it this time! Please excuse the terribly classy MS Paint removing my name the bottom time...
http://i.imgur.com/eCVh1.jpg
Sadly I agree with the general consensus and suspect this will be 3.0.1 source and we will probably have to wait just as long for 3.1.
Is this a deliberate delay to keep the released source behind the latest running version, or a paranoid conspiracy theory from an individual who has been at work for way too long today? You decide!
I choose to hope that, given I heard the 23rd as a release date for 3.1, that the 22nd might see a simultaneous release of 3.1 and the 3.1 kernel source. Lets stay positive!
Although, I'd note, that just having the source to all Acer's drivers for the 3.0 kernel would make it a lot easier to hack up a working 3.1 kernel from Motorola/Asus source, even if Acer doesn't immediately release 3.1 source.
Thank you. Yeah...Let's stay positive -ve

Seriously though, here's to hoping June will be a good month for the Iconia after all.

Can still use and tweak the 3.0 kernel source. Kernel does not go with Honeycomb version.
Hi guys !
Acer still didn't published their kernel code, really ?
People in the Transformer forum told me it uses a Wolfson WM8903 DAC, it means I could port Voodoo sound.
No way without source, of course.
Nice to see you here Mr Voodoo
12:44 AM 22/06/2011 Aussie time. No sight of update
Meanwhile... Samsung releases Galaxy Tab 10.1 kernel source
When acer releases 3.1 can you update to it if youre rooted ?
If it doesn't come out today, I'll chase it up again in that same support task.

no one can say for sure.. but it probably will update. I imagine this is going to be a full system update that will install regardless of what you have on it.

kinda sucks that Motorola Droid users are getting dropped.
But I imagined it was only a matter of time...
The hardware is starting to get limited.
But I wonder if a dual core phone will be the last phone I will ever buy?
It would take quite some time for the OS to exceed the power of a dual core phone.
I think there's a pretty good chance the G2 will be one of the first devices, based on this update.

Humm!! I do not see a lot of change for the MSM7230 on cyanogen's git

Surely it's down to how much CPU the apps use, rather than the OS ?

Well, Cyanogenmod himself owns a G2, so he'd be working on it personally.

Sounds Desire Z is surely had the arrow on the knee ...
Hope they got the graphical and camera driver developed better than the current ported/AOSP based ICS.
I posted this the other day in the CM7 thread in the dev forum :
Update on CM9 from Cyanogen (Steve Kondik) himself :
We've been seeing some alpha builds of CM9 for a few devices. Where are things at right now?
We’re working on adding a lot of new features ... the theme engine needs to be totally rebuilt. Overall things are going to be a lot cleaner. The CM settings will all be integrated into the stock control panel. Everything in it's place, where it should be. The hardeset thing about CM9 is that Google has changed so much internally with ICS. Issues with graphics drivers are an issue. We can’t even write a transition layer to use. We’re just waiting on Google at this point. I’ve ported CM9 to the galaxy tab 10.1, but with no hardware acceleration... well, it just sucks. A lot of things don't work. We're not going to release something at this stage of development.

Looks like it's not going to be very soon.
By the way, I clarified with Steve that it is not Google they are waiting on, but graphics drivers from official vendor ICS updates.

Thanks for the update, I have to admit though that I am becoming more and more impatient.
But, I know it will be worth the wait.
I have also been waiting impatiently for CM9, i've been a die-hard CM user since my G1...but a good alternative until they are done is Virtuous Quattro...right now at RC2, but it runs very well on my G2

I've been following the thread and there seems to still be many glitches in RC2. Does it run smoothly on your phone? Also does the camera work if u use a 3rd party app? I'm think of switching over to virtuous quattro

Virtuous Quattro is pretty cool, and once the display issues stabilize, it will probably get a permanent place on my phone unless cm9 blows me away.

I think I may try this one Monday. I had a replacement phone sent to me last week because of a display issue (turning shades of green and sometimes not waking up). The replacement they sent me is now going into a boot cycle when I try and turn on the WiFi, and it doesn't find any networks. Plus, I updated the stock Froyo to Gingerbread, and it looks like a pain somewhat to downgrade.
So maybe when I get the new one in Monday it will have stock Froyo and I can root and install the Virtuous Quattro ROM then.
Maybe you guys can answer a question since I am thinking about it now, if I do root it and everything with stock Froyo, do I just make a backup with ClockworkMod to keep the stock image?
my ics experience: virtuous quattro RC2, Andromadus Alpha 8, ICS Slim 1.2
I tried all three ICS ROMs on my G2 this weekend. Kudos to the devs -- they are all worthy projects. I am back to CM7, though while waiting for CM9 or a more stable version of the other three. Here is my feedback:
Virtuous Quattro RC2:
This is an impressive ROM, but definitely not RC -- the launcher display glitch is a showstopper if only for aesthetic reasons. I'm glad that the camera hack exists (progress!), but it's not yet usable, or at least not reliable. It often crashes, doesn't show preview until the second picture, and often corrupts part of the photo. Also, no wifi-calling which is a must have for many T-Mobile G2 users.
Andromadus Alpha 8:
This ROM is more stable than Virtuous Quattro in terms of visual glitches, but it lacks camera and wifi-calling. I missed some of the settings and features built into Quattro.
ICS Slim 1.2
This ROM performs quite nicely and is definitely slim. I missed the stock Email app, but it was easy to add back in by unzipping an ICS Gapps file. Wifi-calling is installed but not working for me. I was able to launch the app, and get the icon in the notification bar, but wasn't able to actually place or receive calls. Incoming calls were ignored, and outgoing calls would spin on dialing for about 20 seconds, and then end with a beep.

Same here I was thinking we'd see CM9 sometime in february but by the looks of things and how slow the development is, I can only hope for march/april
Just read over on the Xperia blog that in order for SE to get ICS out in the quickest way they will not be upgrading the kernel to the lates version (3.0 I believe) but will be using the same kernel that is currently used in all 2.3 Xperia phones. Here is the link to the article.
http://www.xperiablog.net/2012/01/0...unchanged-kernel-for-android-4-0-ics-release/
SE says that they have made extensive tweaks and testing to the current kernel and see no benefit to upgrade to the lates in ICS, but rather prefer to maintain the same kernel in order to get ICS the all phones as quickly as possible. I am totally cool with that and I applaud them for their excellent work thus far. I am wonering though if they plan on after releasing ICS if they will release a new upgraded kernel..... either way extremely happy with SE is doing, much better then B.S. Motorola is givine to their customer, aka middle finger.
SE has already learn from their mistake 2010 ago.
2010 ago they are the slowest company for updating, now them maybe the fastest

Agreed, yes they have certainly learned from 2010.
They won't update the kernel:
http://www.xperiablog.net/2012/01/0...unchanged-kernel-for-android-4-0-ics-release/
So we will get ICS, just not a new kernel? Will ICS slow down our phones if we are still using the old kernel?
Couldn't a dev just make a kernel based on the new sources? Or would that be just absurd?

It would be a ton of work, I know cause I used to own a P500 ( Optimus one) and devs over there have been working on the .35 kernel since july and it's still not in good condition(graphical errors, heavy battery drainage) not to mention that it was not from scratch.
So yeah it would be absurd for the devs to do so much work for free
i'm fine with this, the problem i have is verizon will never update this phone again, but hopefully we'll see some cdma love from the devs
I hope most people are aware that ICS will break some apps that normally work now. Facing the same issue with my Transformer Prime, but all in all it's a great step up for the OS.
Meh, its a little disappointing, but no big deal. Maybe once they get the updates out they can look at it
hi all the awesome developers
do you think anyone will manage to get a working SDK port on our device?

I'm betting that AOSP ROMs should be able to be ported with just an ICS kernel, much of 4.1 is UI improvements rather than deep changes like 4.0.

4.0 and 4.1 is totally different from 2.3 to 4.0 so you're completely wrong here.
The answer is. It is possible but someone needs to do it and most developers have moved on.

We will see. The notification bar alone will require massive work. Not to mention the changes they added to the kernel to support the tegra closed source drivers. So we will see what happens when the nexus gets the update.
Not to mention few will use the sdk to make a rom

btw porting from nexus is not gonna happen. jb is quite a ways off from dhd if at all. starting to push the limits of this old phone. and personally id rather have a perfect working ics coming soon than start up with another flakey and nothing really working alpha again.

we will have an official fully working ICS in a few weeks, and I think the AOSP ICS roms are good enough for daily use, so its just the right time to start working on JB!
It says here ........http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s3-jelly-bean-update-details-samsung-ram-98158/ ......that JB will be rolled out to 3 year old devices, some by July, and one of these is the Nexus S. So if the Nexus S will be capable of running JB we might even be lucky enough to see an official release for our DHD's by the end of the year maybe!!?? Atleast should get a decent port!! Looks more promising to see some Jelly Bean goodness than I first thought anyway!!

remember. ICS was released mid october, and we still dont have official yet :/
True, but ICS was a major change to Gingerbread whereas JB is supposed to be an incremental upgrade, so maybe if we do get it officially it will be a bit quicker getting to us than ICS!!?? Can always hope
LC said he is waiting for source, and then he will build a rom.
he also said JB is a small update to the source, so it wont be a problem to build a working rom. (or at least this is how I read it XD)
Our DHDs are due an official ICS rom in the coming weeks. Once this happens, surely it won't take long to get the camera fully working in ICS and JB update should merely be incremental. I'm not a dev though, so could be wrong.

I know I'm not the only one unlocked, decrypted, TWRP'd and ready to flash a custom kernel.
Things I'm looking forward to the most:
Battery life improvements - The N6 needs lots of help here.
Color control - Would love to add some more blue to increase the color temp a tad.
If you've got a donation ready to go, please sound off so we can motivate the devs to help us out. :good:

No need for a bounty just yet. If one of the devs releases something you like then by all means donate to them then.

Many devs are in Europe, where the phone hasn't even been released or put up for pre-sale yet. Looks like 1 Dec. is when they will get a crack at pre-sales.

Franco already placed his order via Amazon. Google isn't selling Nexus 6 officially in his country via Play Store.
His order is expected to ship on December 15th.
He's currently working on other devices (mako) right now, I'll be helping him do test blind builds as I have the N6 physically until he has a N6 in his hands.
