Kernel source release date - Acer Iconia A500

Just thought you guys would be keen to know - after chasing it up with Acer New Zealand, they have confirmed the kernel source will be released on the 22nd of this month, so that's exciting news.

What form of communication and how reliable is the information?

great news...
but, where is the source ?
any link ?
btw, just 6 days to go then

So, that'll be just in time for 3.1 then, and probably a different kernel!
I hope they release the 3.1 kernel source a bit quicker...

I opened a support task which quoted the license they include on the device back to them, and politely asked where I could take them up on the offer of source code. I made it very clear I was talking about the kernel, and not honeycomb as a whole.
They passed it up the chain straight away, and then came back to say the reoly they'd had was that it would be placed on the Acer website on the 22nd of this month. I'll screenshot the support task in a moment.

I think it will be 3.0.1 not 3.1 though.

Here you go, screenshot of the support task here. I think I've shopped out all my details, but in case I haven't and someone spots something, please let me know! I'm always paranoid with posting screenshots...
Crap, totally didn't. One second...
There, got it this time! Please excuse the terribly classy MS Paint removing my name the bottom time...

Sadly I agree with the general consensus and suspect this will be 3.0.1 source and we will probably have to wait just as long for 3.1.
Is this a deliberate delay to keep the released source behind the latest running version, or a paranoid conspiracy theory from an individual who has been at work for way too long today? You decide!

I choose to hope that, given I heard the 23rd as a release date for 3.1, that the 22nd might see a simultaneous release of 3.1 and the 3.1 kernel source. Lets stay positive!
Although, I'd note, that just having the source to all Acer's drivers for the 3.0 kernel would make it a lot easier to hack up a working 3.1 kernel from Motorola/Asus source, even if Acer doesn't immediately release 3.1 source.

Thank you. Yeah...Let's stay positive -ve

I prefer an indifferent air of pessimism. That way, I'm never disappointed...
Seriously though, here's to hoping June will be a good month for the Iconia after all.

Can still use and tweak the 3.0 kernel source. Kernel does not go with Honeycomb version.

Hi guys !
Acer still didn't published their kernel code, really ?
People in the Transformer forum told me it uses a Wolfson WM8903 DAC, it means I could port Voodoo sound.
No way without source, of course.

Nice to see you here Mr Voodoo

12:44 AM 22/06/2011 Aussie time. No sight of update

Meanwhile... Samsung releases Galaxy Tab 10.1 kernel source

When acer releases 3.1 can you update to it if youre rooted ?

If it doesn't come out today, I'll chase it up again in that same support task.

no one can say for sure.. but it probably will update. I imagine this is going to be a full system update that will install regardless of what you have on it.

how soon till you think 2.3 is leaked

we all know its going to happen but how soon till we see the leaks
Leaks? It's already officially out. Nexus One's are receiving the update as we speak. As for an EVO specific leak from HTC/Sprint, who knows..I'm sure the devs will have something out soon if there aren't any major hardware changes / requirements.
SDK is out NOT a working rom its no "leaked" pushed yet to the nexus 1
This update sucks for me if it doesn't fix the CPU problem of almost maxing out when scrolling which causes scrolling to be laggy. If they don't fix this by the time my next upgrade comes up I'm switching to a Windows phone. I want a smooth interface.

I guess I'm not following.
According to Engadget, Gingerbread, 2.3, is running on Nexus One's. They've received the OTA update.
Although, they may have been wrong and pulled the article and didn't say anything, since
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/06/android-2-3-update-now-rolling-out-to-nexus-one-owners/
no longer appears to be a valid link, but it was just a half hour ago.
I think this is what it said:
Nexus One owners feeling a little Nexus S envy can breathe a little easier -- we're hearing that Android 2,3 Gingerbread is being pushed out to the N1 as we speak. We'd imagine that all the slick new features that don't require new hardware (like NFC support) will be there, and we're definitely interested in playing with this built-in WiFi calling stack.

the latest ota pushed to the nexus was just a minor update i don't think it was 2.3

That might have been an old link where the nexus one got a security update and people jumped the gun on calling gingerbread
Looks like Engadget was wrong and pulled the story. Nobody can confirm that 2.3 is out it seems, though some have tried to get their N1's to update.
Way to go Engadget, wrong information with no clarification. At least post a "Oops, we were wrong" update or something.
The N1 forums are saying it will be out on/around the 16th.
Edit:
Think they heard me:
Update: Looks like our flood of tips came from people who were seeing their N1s get a different, less-interesting update -- we'll let you know when the actual 2.3 update roll out. Ah, the heady optimism of hope.

One of the main guys on the Android team tweeted that no ota was released for the nexus one and that the source would be released in the "coming weeks". My bet is that the first rom with working Gingerbread on it will be Cyanogen and within a few weeks of the source being released.

Yup, for our EVOs CM is the best bet and that will be AFTER the source (not to be confused with the Nexus One OTA) is released.

Any sense rom will have to wait till a 2.3 gingerbread source is released by HTC which could be a while, if ever. Cyanogen is already on 2.35.9 kernel which hopefully means that porting their work to 2.3 shouldn't be that hard to do.

Do not ask when Gingerbread will make it to the EVO.
Seriously, how the hell would any of us know? We're not psychics, we're not secret HTC/Sprint/Google/CIA/Mafia/Former KGB/NSA employees, we can't predict the future, so why on God's green Earth would you ask us?
Shut up, sit down, twiddle your thumbs, and wait for a press release from Sprint, HTC, Google, etc. announcing that Gingerbread will or will not be ported to the EVO. If you really want Gingerbread, go help Team Douche port it to be CyanogenMod 7. That's the most guaranteed way to get it to our phones.

Not sure if there's any confusion with what I think I read from your post but.. I'm talking about the AOSP source not the HTC source. That'll probably take a month or so after the Nexus One OTA to be released and then another month or so before CM releases a RC of CM7/2.3.

windows phone? are you on crack?
I'm guessing you won't see a Sprint/HTC Gingerbread ROM until sometime next year. Rumor has the source code being released when the Nexus S ships which is allegedly on Dec 16. Expect AOSP based Gingerbread ROMs to start rolling out around then and an Official Sprint ROM after sometime well after that, after its been thoroughly QA'd.

Getting annoyed with Acer? (Samsung released kernel source)

Come one what is the benefit of Acer keeping the beast locked down.

Hell yes.
Here is hope that Acer realizes the sooner they provide the community with what it needs to use our devices to their full potential the sooner they will move more units!
As soon as I saw Samsung released the kernal source it really got me down that I bought the Acer 2 weeks ago. Really like this tablet but with the lack of Acer opening things up I think my tablet is craigslist bound.

I was just thinking... could it be that Acer is nothing but a marketer? They bought the device from OEM manufacturer somewhere in China, label it with 'Acer' and 'Iconia A500' and sell it.
That's why they know nothing about 'unlock bootloader'. Release kernel? Dream on!
Well, hope I'm wrong
Almost electronics products are made in china on this days, and they are releasing 3.1,so i dont believe that

That's what I've heard too. I think the Huawei is the only official announcement for 3.2 at this point, with the flyer being rumored to be waiting on 3.2 for the update. So we're still only 1 real update behind.

No.
One of the things 3.2 brings to the table is better support for 7" tablets (presumably 1024*600 resolution), but it also brings better hardware acceleration and bug fixes applicable to all Honeycomb tablets.

I would like to see a relevant and trustworthy source as well. Everything I've read says that 3.2 = 3.1 fixed for 7" screens and Adobe Flash 10.3 built in. I haven't seen where any additional features or fixes were announced.
Technically I don't see why they wouldn't fix whatever bugs are discovered in 3.1, BUT I'm guessing 3.1 is the final major release with 3.2 being a minor one and maybe 3.2.x being supplemental bug fixes until Ice Cream is announced and released.
Tomshardware has it. I cant post links yet due to post count.

Heh, Im used to Samsung's idea of soon. Aka, 7-9months after release.
It wont be too long, Asus is staying on top of their updates
Last time they said soon, i believe it was about 2 weeks? Not bad imho.
If I am not mistaken eee transformer was released late April. On 31st of May Asus released 3.1 update. Thus I would expect 3.2 update in 2-3 weeks.

No it has not. If it has really been said, from google, then go.
The last I've heard (and heard repeatedly, from google) is that it will all be open source, and they just have reasons not to release source yet. 3.x is still a very new platform and they expect much more.
Source will be released summer/fall w/ ICS.
I hope ICS will arrive on the TFv1. If open sourced a lot of fixes and mods are on the way for sure. Not sure how open access to Tegra 2 will be though

[Q] Android 4.0 ROM for Acer a500

Heya
Have we gona get android 4.0 for acer a500 or not?

It's suppose to be coming. First quarter or even this month.
You know any good Apps for Students.

Only few things NOT working (not worried about these few for now)

Officially it is true, so you will need a custom ROM for ICS on the a500/a501 as it stands today. I think I tried telling everyone that already, but just got flamed on the threads for saying it. But, that's not the point now.
Currently, let we only state what has been made public so nobody does the flaming again:
ACER has officially said that the only tablet that will be getting ICS currently sold with HC is their new a200/a700 models. ACER also stated they are scaling back the Engineering staff that currently works on the a100/a500 by 60-70%.
So read into it what you want. If you think this means 'currently' as of today doesn't mean that in the future they won't therefore this by no means closes the door on getting ICS via OTA then you can. You are free to believe what you would like.

Actually you got flamed for stating that the hardware in the A500 wouldn't support ICS, which is one of the most ludicrous things I've heard to date in this forum.

If not A500 then another of its peers will get ICS - Transformer anyone? Porting will be a breeze as the hardware on all current tablets are essentially the same
It just the waiting sucks :-D
Compared to HTC who has decided that gingerbread couldn't been properly installed on his HTC Desire neither, I undesrtand the decision of Acer.
This is business. Acer creates new models because the firm is in competition with the other manufacturers and, in order to sell their tablets, they must propose some new things on their new models.
Why to buy the A200, knowing that its hardware is very close to the A500's one? ... Because it runs under ICS when the A500 doesn't.
Since months, we can find dozens of custom roms on XDA running Gingerbread fine on the Desire. Even ICS has been ported successfully on the Desire.
So, I guess that everybody who wants ICS on his a500 will get it too in the near future.
sir you are 1 big troll
timmyDean You will always be a noob....
The rumors and news items that were spread seemed to be a scam... Acer clearly stated in front of the world (cnn I bellieve) that they are NOT cutting down on their tablets. Acer made it really clear that they will do a lot to bring acers tablets to the top of the market.
Stepping out of the tablet market would also be a much bigger mistake since the new version of windows (code-named windows 8) will be targeting tablet devices.
To clarify your topics regarding ICS needing higher end devices is a ****load of crap. The first target in the ICS development was to make a Honeycomb update that would be completely compiled, faster and more lightweight.
it actualy needs much lower specs to run than Honeycomb....
next on our list is the official mail you will get from Acer as fast as you ask them "are you planning on releasing android 4.0 on our devices?". In an e-mail to me they actually said that they were currently in contact with Google to test the new android 4.0 system on Acer Iconia a500 tablets.
If you are planning on spreading more rumors regarding devices or whatever. add the sources where you actually got this information to it.
Otherwise get out from xda or any other forum for that matter and trow your tablet away if you are so unhappy with it.
My Iconia Tab is fantastic, and knowing that the new release won't add much new to android 2.3.1 I can life another few days without the pressing need to root the device and pirate android 4.0 to it.
please know that ICS is just a compiled (little bit faster) version of android with a few new functions (including an easy to hack face recognition system).
So Timmy: Stop Trolling or bring that behaviour to the forums and message boards that actually allow that.

For you to claim I do not know what I'm taking about is just wrong and I never said anything about ACER getting out of the tablet business. If you'd read, you see that I stated we cut support by half on all twlighted hardware which the a500 is part of. So, instead of listening to actual truth, based on actual information from ACER you can believe what you would like. Since when does "currently" not mean current? Of course I would believe ICS is not currently available on the A500, ifthat is what they said. It is believable because we don't have it now. To extrapolate that to mean it will never be available from Acer, is quite a leap. Samsung Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus are the only Samsung phones currently available with ICS, does that mean that there are no former or future Samsung phones that will have ICS? Use your head...

Acer ANZ have given a release date for ICS for the A500 on their facebook fan page, and as usual for acer their promises of an april release have turned into more lies, their release date in answer to a question on their page is May 17.
Doesn't matter really, they haven't said no. There's plenty of aftermarket versions that work fine anyway.

Yes! End the lies! MAKE them release the OTA update in April. Whether it's finished or not. Whether it's full of bugs or not. Getting it soon is far more important than getting it right!
...or maybe not

The problem people have with dates is that they only look at the date and not the rest of what is said.
The Acer webpage says the date for the A500 update is TBA Mid April.
TBA means To Be Announced mid April.
Seems to me that since it is early April and not mid April, they are ahead of schedule.
But they are guilty of being late in the past.
Still, do not go by Facebook. It is not reliable for Acer announcements.
Acer ANZ is Datacom Manila, a closed group of 64.
Does not sound like an official Acer site to me.
Oh yea, here is the Acer webpage.

This will be my last Acer product until their management changes their priorities.
So far I've been deeply disappointed by the timeliness of their updates. Moto and Asus have already pushed ICS to their hardware and the Asus tabs has vastly superior hardware compared to Acer offerings.
I guess Acer is just not very attuned to their customers' needs and that's disheartening as an owner.
I second this. I listed mine on craigs list today.

Let's see, I bought my A500 in August and it was loaded with 3.0. I quickly got the update to 3.1 and fairly soon received 3.2. What do you want, 5 major OS versions in a years time? Seriously, people... relax. Even if you have to only wait 2 more weeks, you're selling your tablet? I'm calling shenanigans.
Learn patience. A good, bug-free update, especially one with this many changes, is worth the wait. And if you're THAT impatient, root the darned thing and load one of the many ICS versions that many developers have to offer.
/end rant, but not before a general facepalm

Can we chill a little bit? 3% of android devices are on ICS. Thats it. It's not like we're the last ones waiting for an update.....
If you will be watching the frequency and the increasing quality of the ICS leaks in the Dev section, you can expect the official ics update soon. And if you don't want to wait just install one of the marvelous ics custom roms. The improvement over hc is huge! !
With best regards, maris

i honestly wouldnt go for motorola, their phones are locked down and as far as i understand the droid x2 (which is still in its 18 month update period) isnt seeing ICS so like acer they go back on their commitments as well
also, motorola promised that theyd release an unlock tool late 2011 and its april 2012 and there hasnt been anything released

I totally agree. but i was just making note that there are other options. If a company sets itself apart from the others in a way they Support what customers want. Right now that company could Take many customers from the pack. People are sick of devices becoming obsolete and disposable in a year or less. And locked down tighter then FT KNOX. (i live about 10 minutes from there) I can tell its very secure.
As far as locked bootloaders, the vast majority of phone users don't even know of the possibility of modding... let alone have any desire to do it. The same goes for updates. People on sites like this represent the small minority of users. The typical tablet or phone user wakes up one day, looks at their device, sees a box saying there's an update, presses OK and goes on with their lives.
They bought their device based upon the user experience, not some vague hope that some major change will happen... sometime... soon.
Hello everybody, this is my forst post, so be comprehensive...
If someone wants an Acer ICS build there is the latest "leak 1.031" on the Developer section which is very easy to install - download the zip file, rename it to "Update.zip", put it on your extSD and reboot while holding "power" + "vol-".
I never did any mods to my A500 since I bought it, never rooted or so, but lately it was starting to freeze and force close quite a lot so I updated it manually and am very satisfied - running very smooth, web browsing is much faster (using ICS browser+) and everything seems to work perfectly! I'm just saying that it's a very simple way to get stable ICS without doing any complicated things (CWM, root, kernel mods, etc...)
Cheers!

While we wait, I have to wonder if the general number of us were polled as to WHY we want ICS, what the reasons would be? I'd like to have it, but honestly I don't know of any compelling reason aside from the fact that it is something new.
I'll bet once we get it not much time will pass before we are Jonesing for Jelly Bean for the same silly reason.
I'm running Thor's HC ROM on mine, and very happy with that. It runs well and everything works. What more could I realistically ask for? What's ICS supposed to bring us, anyway?

Well ice cream will bring us something to put our jellybeans in. sheesh everyone knows you can't have jellybeans without ice cream first.
I will not scream for jelly bean if I get my ics. I will ask politely in a demanding way.

OK, as long as you're not too aggressive. ( - I couldn't resist.)
