So I finally called in and replaced my cracked screen under the Accident Protection Plan I purchased through Motorola. I had a GSM Developer Edition and was told it was discontinued. They offered an upgrade to 32GB Pure Edition. Got the code and am currently waiting for it to be delivered with a bamboo back.
Why is moto treating us so well?

I assume they are trying to use us to spread the word. Everyone I swayed to the X bought it because of my experience, not Motorola's marketing skills.
As cool as it is they're giving you a newer phone, I'd personally be kind of bummed to have that behemoth as a replacement to the perfectly sized 2013 X.

Me too. I have indicated at least 5 people, directly, to buy Moto X 2013. Not so much the 2014 version though, didn't think it was as good as the X2013. Even less after those update delays. Even Moto E has Lollipop now
Yes the '14 X is bigger and slippier... But I still prefer the bigger screen because I hate on screen buttons, so it's a trade off I am ready to make.
yeah, four months is not a short period of time
are they working on building a new system other than android !

I just bought my fiancé a 2013 X developer edition for her birthday and have spent the last few days setting it up. I almost want one for myself, but I'm not liking the on screen buttons either. I'm still dragging around an ancient bionic. :/

Don't do it. The '13 X has an awesome form factor and fits great in the hand. But I hate the mic on the front panel. It always collects debris and being in my front pocket doesn't help either.

Same here, I can't stand big phone. Hence my automatic disapproval of Nexus 6. Apparently the update has been delayed because of chipset issues with the X2013 :/ Couldn't wait any longer and installed CM 12. Loving it, apart from a few bugs. Most of the minor ones are fixed with *almost* daily updates.
The update could take a while longer or worst case scenario, not come at all.
last i heard 2014 moto x still doesn't have root
That's cool that they're replacing the phone with the newer model. My Accidental Damage plan is good till June '16... Maybe I can get a 2015 Moto X if mine breaks before it's up.
Does anyone know if unlocking the bootloader through Motorola voids the Accidental Damage plan? I know it'll void the factory warranty. I've got the xt1053 which is unlockable; at the very least I'm waiting till after June this year to unlock because that's when the factory warranty is up. Then again if the factory 5.x build is good I may not even want to then.

Well if I unlocked the BL then I'd be able to root by flashing SuperSU which is what I would do. As you said there's no reason to unlock if you don't plan to root. Untimately I'd like to root whatever version of 5.x we get and install Xposed on the stock ROM; there aren't very many tweaks I want but there are a few that would be nice.

As far as I was told, and I have it in email form from Motorola's White Glove Team, unlocking the boot loader on the '13 X Developer Edition and '14 X Pure Edition does not void the warranty or the accidental damage warranty. Trust me, I was on a call for 2:53:39 waiting for an official response and a replacement guarantee for my '13 X per the Accidental Damage Plan.
Root not available for a near stock rom? I find that hard to swallow. I'll have to look into it once I receive my Bamboo backed '14 X 32GB Pure Edition.

Mine's not the Dev edition which is why I'm worried about the warranty. I wanted a wood back model and the DEV edition was only available in boring black. Mine is unlockable but I know it voids the factory warranty. I'm just curious about the accidental damage plan.

Well in my email I made sure they noted that unlocking the boot loader doesn't void the accident protection. So I'll go with that. Just take some time and work your way through the phone calla with them and have them put it in writing. Not an easy process, but well worth it to me.

Trying out T mobile with a Nexus 5 now. I love the phone and the service works well enough. Still thinking about picking up the X though so I can stay with VZ. Corp discount, much wider coverage, and unlimited data is hard to leave. I've been traveling over the holiday and haven't gotten signal in some areas with TMO. Not used to having to worry about that. The only thing that concerns me about the X is the near total lack of development. It's running 4.4 now but it remains to be seen if that update pace will continue in the future.
I have a feeling more people will jump on the custom versions. Especially now that root is available for 4.4 and AOSP isn't worth giving up Moto X features.
Edit: I had the Dev edition and am thinking about the custom version myself.
Edit: Just saw this as well http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48033832#post48033832
Currently have a Dev edition and may be trying out a custom one. Thing that sucks is I can't decide what color combinations I want. I like the look of the Dev edition though so I'm not worried if I can't get in on this. Hopefully Moto added some extra server capacity...but in the end it doesn't really matter since demand always exceeds the preparation.
If I do get it, it will definitely be the dev edition. I wish it was black but I plan on putting a case on it anyway so the front is really the only part that matters.

I just like the fact that with an unlocked bootloader I never have to worry about a future update killing root, etc.
theres about 5 of us among my friends who all rocked the vzw gnex.
i sold mine for a nokia 928 over the summer and then went moto x a few weeks ago. never looked back.
one switched to tmobile for a nexus 5..but now is tempted to get a tmobile moto x and randomlly sim swap cause of the deal.
and i think i convinced the remaining 3 to all go for the deal tomorrow to replace their gnex's haha
I debated swapping my 16gb for a 32gb dev edition...but i'm okay with running stock on this beauty.

Me too but I really haven't seen a need for root that I couldn't live without. My Dev Ed remained without root for 3 weeks and I only rooted it out of curiosity after they changed the warranty.

I'm coming from an S3, picking up the Moto X today with the sale. I'm torn between the DE and a custom. Right now I'm leaning towards custom because of all the great reviews of Moto's edits. BUT, I am worried about the longevity of the device lacking an unlocked bootloader.
Any advice?
I just picked up a vzw developer while it was in stock. I am having buyers remorse though as I have an HTC One currently. I need to be able to sell my One to make up for the cost of the Dev X or it will have to go back.

I'm also having worries about this device (except that it looks awesome). I'm just not seeing much activity for this device compared to others. I'm wondering if I should just wait another month or two and get the LG G2 for free when my contract is up instead of buying this? Oy.
I jumped on the deal. Of course, "jumped" in this context means I spent eight hours bashing my head against Motorola's broken website before I was finally able to place an order, and by the looks of their Twitter feed I was one of the lucky ones. They left a lot of people out in the cold today, with the website issues combined with limited inventory....
Been looking for a replacement for my Galaxy Nexus almost since day one. I love the ease of flashing that puppy but almost everything else about it stinks. Crappy battery life, particularly on LTE, but the real kicker was the never ending reception problems. Others have documented these issues, and I've been through three replacement phones (at least Verizon tried!) without success. It's fine for me when I'm stationary, most of the issues seem to be with handoffs while mobile. I've dropped calls with the GNex in parts of VZW's network where I haven't seen dropped calls since the Bell Atlantic days....
$400 for the unlocked DE is an awesome deal, I think, particularly for users with grandfathered unlimited data who want a flagship phone. On that same note, I'm told it works flawlessly with T-Mobile, so if Verizon pulls UL data I know what 'Plan B' is.....

"Starting at 12 pm EST/9 am PST this Wednesday, we will relaunch the $349 promotion."
Good news!
So this gives me a bit to consider between:
1) Getting a Moto X DE on Wednesday
2) Ordering a Nexus 5
3) Sticking with my HTC One XL until July -> contract renewal time
Wondering if some Moto X owners can weigh in. The thing that is attracting me to this phone the most is the battery life. My HOX battery (I feel) is going bad. Many symptoms which point to this, listing them all would probably be too OT. Bottom line is that with no "misbehaving apps" or anything - I'm seeing maybe 2 hours of screen time before my phone dies, on a good day. So trying to figure out if I want to put up with this until July and see what's available then or jumping on this deal.
I see there isn't much development going on for this device compared to the Nexus 5. But honestly most of my flashing ROMs/kernels have been vain attempts to improve battery life on my previous and current phone. Is there a point to flashing custom ROMs to this phone? From what I've read the greater majority of people actually prefer the stock Motorola ROM with their custom apps over CM, AOSP, etc. Going back to the Nexus 5, which is suppose to always get the latest and greatest from Google, the Moto X is already on 4.4 as well, any thoughts as to if this trend will continue from Motorola?
I've also read of some issues with the camera - can anyone weigh in here on the camera quality? While I'm not one of those people who snap a million photos a day - I still like to have something reliable in my pocket to take a good photo when the situation arises.
I hope this isn't too rambling and terribly OT. I would appreciate any input.
Two cents: I'm fairly certain that the promotion on Wednesday is only for Motomaker devices, and not Dev Editions. Those sold out already, I believe.
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
They've stated on their twitter account that the dev editions have sold out and will not be available on the subsequent days of the deal. You could order a t-mobile variant which is the same as the developer edition with the exception of voiding the warranty when unlocking the boot loader.
I managed to get a developer edition in the second batch yesterday, but I'm still debating on canceling and trying for a customized t-mobile variant. I currently have an AT&T version that I'm going to sell, but the Moto X is easily the best android phone I've used. The combination of size, battery life and additional features is just hard to beat. My previous two phones where the HTC One and SIII and I would personally take the Moto over either of them and the S4.

If you buy the t-mobile version you can still unlock the boot loader, they just state that it will void the warranty. I don't find myself needing to do much to the Moto X, I just don't like being at the mercy of AT&T and their notoriously slow updates and bloatware which is why I'm switching. The t-mobile and gsm dev edition are the same device internally.
The sale yesterday was the biggest cluster eff I've ever seen for a phone. I had a dev edition in my cart multiple times yesterday and was never able to check out. All were sold out but today mysteriously some gsm phones in stock for normal price. No luck on them honoring the price. Total b.s.. I said I would never own a Moto phone after the defy abd cliq and was almost there...but I can honestly say after the bs yesterday with the site crashing at nearly the start Motorola needs to step up for the developers. I am at a loss as to why if the t mobile version is almost the same why they wouldn't sell a few more dev phones on Wed and Mon.

I had a nice unexpected surprise this week.
I've using an unlocked Moto G (16 gig) on AT&T for awhile. Started to have problems with the earpiece. Did an advance exchange for another Moto G. Received the Moto G, but come to find out the replacement was not unlocked.
After 2-3 different calls to try to figure out the situation, I received a call from another person in advance exchange. This is a true story, but he said because of the hassle and amount of calls I had to go through, they were shipping me the 2013 32 gig developer edition. I never asked, requested, or even got upset trying to initial just to get them to ship the correct Moto G. Showed up today brand new sealed in the box.
Anyway, pleasantly surprised and now need to snoop around the forums on case recommendations. They sent the white background/black front.
Congrats. The dev version only come in one color, black front and white back as you state.

While I don't mean to sound harsh, this is the Moto X subforum so, why are you posting about the Moto G here? I read that post thinking that because of the hassles you had with Motorola customer service they sent you the 32GB Dev Edition of the Moto X, but... now I don't have any clue whatsoever exactly what you got.
I don't think there exists a 32GB Moto G Developer Edition.

Same thing happened to us!
I bought a brand new Moto G ( previous edition) for my dad and after a few days the sim card slot somehow got messed up and wasn't reading the card. So we called, it was covered under warranty and we gave our info for advanced exchange. When we received the package in the mail it turned out to be a Moto X Dev edition.. I was shocked and called them to make sure it wasn't a mistake. ( I didn't want them to charge me extra for it) . Turns out it wasn't a mistake but they just decided to be nice? Not sure why exactly.. Maybe they have extra DEs sitting around or something, or they want to clear inventory. Anyways my dad and I are both happy campers and their excellent customer service has made us customers for life!
Moto has great support. They really take care of people.
Seems like a fitting place to me.
I just purchased this same dev edition model and I am eagerly waiting for it to arrive!
My custom moto x had a ring around the front camera get loose. I was eventually told (after I sent Motorola the phone) that they were unable to make me the same phone and upgraded me to the pure edition 2nd gen.
Moto has the best customer service from what I experienced. ( I have own samsung. lg, htc , etc, all went through RMA before).
Last time my Droid Razr Maxx broke and could not read sim (UICC card). they just gave me an MOTO X developer Edition. ( back in April). I call and offer to paid more to get customization. They just offer me a custom moto x unlock/t-mobile for not extra cost at all!
I could not be more happier. And I convinced my friends and family to try Moto X.
HTC is very quick in RMA but since moto offer me an free moto x, I could only vote for them
Moto is a great company. But I'm afraid what the future holds now that lenovo has bought them. I think lenovo already closed the US plant where they made custom motomaker phones and outsourced those jobs overseas.
Not to downplay moto's kindness.... But watching ebay it seems people have been clearing warehouses of dev editions lately.
I would imagine that it being a dev edition, at this point they are just trying to figure out what to do with the remaining units... Regular moto x carriers will take and give out for free/pennies until remaining stock is gone... But I bet demand for the developer units has dried up SIGNIFICANTLY now that its an old model of what was already a nich phone to begin with.
Nice unexpected upgrade though. Nice to see companies taking care of customers rather then just performing the minimum expectations..

I owned a lot of phones before ( yes , I am a phone-junk). Some are good, some have issues. It just happens. For those which have issues and still under warranty, I would have them RMA.
That is why I have experienced RMA from Samsung, HTC, LG , and moto.
Not all my phones went through RMA, only a few. But I do know all major phone maker RMA procedures
This is why I won't be able to switch to another brand in the foreseeable future, Motorola tries to show they care. My first Android device was an Xperia X10, which was damaged not a month after I bought it (a known device issue) but Sony wouldn't hold up their warranty and left me scorned forever at them. Never again Sony. And now, Motorola has restored my faith in any company, I just love my Moto X.

I don't think these come with a manufacturer's warranty but idk for sure. It's a great price for a great phone!! I actually like the white woven back/black front combo a lot.
Just search for Verizon Moto X on ebay and you will find the listing. N/A. Last night there were only about 500 sold but tonight over 1600 sold! I don't know how many the guy has to sell.
Also check your email for an email from paypal for a $50 statement credit if you sign up for paypal credit. Not everyone gets the offer, but it came around the end of November. If you sign up and then buy the phone on credit, you will get a $50 statement credit! Check your spam folder if have a paypal account and don't see the offer but like I said, not everyone gets the offer.

Just wanted to give people a head's up - you can get a brand new Verizon Moto X Dev Ed on ebay for $220. Click through ebates, fatwallet or mrrebates and you get another 2% back. Not much cash back, but it is better than nothing.

Do be aware, it seems most of these are from the September 2014 batch that left the factory with incorrect programming (seems the CID is set wrong) and the boot loader unlock site will tell you that the phone cannot be unlocked.
Your going to need to go to this: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/f2061da875?page=1 thread and read the section of the OP in red letters if that is the case. It provides an email address you can email your information to get the unlock code.
Motorola IS unlocking these phones however, and having read through that thread multiple people have inquired about warranty and been told its being honored...
Still a good deal, I have been happy with my phone... but it took about 5 days to get it unlocked and a bit of digging around to figure it all out. Now that Motorola has been dealing with the issue, and you already know about it it should be a lot quicker to get your code. I got in RIGHT after then stopped having you PM oliver on the forum, right before they started trying to figure out how to handle us all.

i had the sept built one. moto sent me an unlock code and now i am all unlocked and rooted! happy buy
If you're on Verizon and are looking for a smaller phone that can be rooted/boatloader unlocked, get this. Root exploits are likely going to be harder to come by after 5.0. With this phone you don't have to worry about root exploits being closed with an OTA.

Nice, thats a better deal than eBay. Plus its Amazon fulfilled so if there are any issues Amazon is much better to deal with than a random eBay seller.

Wow you got an even better deal!!!! Congrats!!!
They are down to $200 on ebay too. I purchased from this seller and it is legit.

Me too!
I ordered the Moto X Developer Edition that will work with Verizon Wireless on Amazon yesterday. I can hardly wait to get in my hands so I can play with it and get everything from my Samsung Galaxy S3 transferred over to it. Looks like it will be one that I will definitely be very happy with. I've had Motorola cell phones and smartphones in the past and they have never let me down.

It'll be a nice jump up from the S3. I'm back on the 2013 version after trying both the droid turbo and moto x 2014. It's a great little phone!
I purchased a new Moto X Verizon Dev Ed from one of the cheaper sellers on Amazon. As expected it was part of the Sept. 2014 batch of phones. I used the links provided on the first page and had my code from Motorola in less than 12hrs and had Lollipop installed not much longer after that.
Very happy with the purchase, don't be scared by the Sept 2014 batch of phones the process is simple (if you can unlock the boot, you have the abilities) and quick.

I just went to that last December from the S3 to the Moto X (1st gen). Love it, love it, love it. NO LAGS!!!! It's been seamless and smooth. Battery life is excellent. I get almost a day and a half if I'm not playing Diamond Digger (the makers of Candy Crush). I love the notification without having to open it up (have a pin code). I have it paired with my Bluetooth stereo in my Honda which plays music off the phone. It even reads back to me whenever I get a text message and gives me the option to respond (and this while driving ). I'm still trying to get use to using Google Now commands so I can do things more hands free.

I got mine almost three weeks ago and I'm really loving how this one works. I also find that my phone really doesn't lag like the S3 did. The cell phone signal is also a lot better on this phone. I really notice it when I'm at work.

I haven't been able to get Lollipop on my phone without going to a custom ROM. How did you get Lollipop on your phone?

that my once $500+ phone back in 2013, is now worth just $200 when you look at the specs of the new Moto G 4th Edition. Heck, the Moto G has better specs on paper then our piece of gold and our phone was once deemed the flagship for Motorola.
How fast has technology advanced. Still can't let go of my Moto X Dev Edition though!
I got this device used with the screen smashed for like 26$usd
Bought a complete screen replacement (display+touch+glass+frame) for 53$usd
So i got a Moto x for 80$usd on 2016 lol

u man, made me laugh :good:
I just got one on Craigslist for $50. Needed a backup phone for when I'm down the beach. Overall great condition, not my favorite color set up, but for 50 bucks who cares. I don't like bringing my Note 5 down to the shore. It was still running KitKat. LOL. So as soon as I got it I unlocked the bootloader threw team win on there and flashed cm. Winning!

I got mine this year for 80€, not used and free shipment o:
I got my XT1053 Dev Edition a year ago for $70 on eBay including shipping. I had to replace the camera and back cover which cost like $10. I used it for a year and I still love it more than any other phone I've ever used. I just switched to the Moto X 2014 and I'm thinking maybe I should have stayed with my 2013. I sure wish phones had upgradeable hardware like PCs.
