I recently rooted my phone just to install an app to let me log some issues I'm having with my phone and unfortunately I can't find the problem. I'm going to send in my galaxy S4 to be repaired by Samsung but I want to ensure that they don't know that I rooted my phone. I unrooted the phone using odin and flashed the stock firmware to the phone. In the phone's settings it says "Official" for device status and when I boot the phone into download mode the Current Binary Says: "Samsung Official" and the System Status says "Official". The unrooting guide I used advised me to use Triangle Away to reset the flash counter. However, even when the phone was rooted, the current binary said "Samsung Official" so I decided to go ahead and unroot it without resetting the flash counter. I never flashed a custom rom to the phone. The only thing I did was root it. So, since the current binary said "Samsung Official" before and after unrooting the phone, am I ok to send it in? I'd rather not root the phone again just to reset the counter when it already says "Samsung Official".
Nor did I install a custom recovery.
Anyone?

Do I need to do a factory reset even if it already says "Samsung Official". I thought that the only time you need to do a factory reset is if your phone gets stuck in a boot loop.
Lol I would before you send it back but you did the steps correctly so your good either way

What I'm confused about is that Motochopper is supposed to trip the flash counter but it didn't or at least it didn't appear that it did...
It shouldn't change the binary counter should have just changed the Samsung status is all only flashing Roms that aren't stock from ATT or Samsung should increase binary! If you boot into boot loader does it say official and if so your golden brah

By boot loader do you mean download mode because the recovery mode doesn't say anything? In download mode it says "Samsung Official" for current binary.

Ok and you are sure about motochopper not triggering the counter? Apparently, the Galaxy S4 doesn't show the flash counter in download mode, and only shows the current binary. Is it possible for the current binary to say "samsung official" but that flash counter to be 1? Of course, I could reroot, install Triangle Away and it would show me the flash counter, but I'd rather not go through all of that again if I don't have to...

haha ok thanks. I was a little paranoid so I actually ended up rerooting my phone, installing Triangle Away and just like you said, Triangle Away said the flash counter was 0 and the current binary said "Samsung Official" so I unrooted my phone and now I'm good to go. Now I've got peace of mind though. haha

Also, for some odd reason, the superuser app was still there when I unrooted. Of course it no longer worked and I promptly uninstalled it. I've read that it will sometimes come back if the phone is reset though...

Usualy with Nexus devices you don`t need to unroot to receive and install updates as long as you have stock rom, kernel and recovery. Not 100 % sure about S4 GE version but if you are on full stock as stated you probably should be able to get the update, but you`ll loose root.

You can unroot from within the superSU app, if you have busybox installed uninstall it and perform a data factory reset. Reboot and try again and hope that works for you. I don`t know if Triangle Away works to reset the flash counter.

Hi,
Rooted my phone in hopes of installing neatrom with mobile odin pro, but for some other reason mobile odin pro just crashes when trying to start it.
Now I'm considering to reset to factory settings, and before doing that install the ANG2 update just to check it out.
Will i get problems besides that my phone ain't rooted anymore when installing the OTA? or in the other case, will i screw something up with a factory reset?

Towelroot will not work (yet) on NG2 mate. If you are allready rooted install superSU and superSU Pro from Play and enable Root survival to keep root after the OTA. After you installed superSU + Pro reboot and enable root survival and accept the OTA.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Okay so thats safe.
What about doing a hardreset on the phone, that will unroot it and set it completly back to stock right ? I just want to see if i can get Mobile Odin to run on the device then, since i have no idea of why it refuses to start as of now.
Hardreset , then run towelroot again after the hardreset.. Will that work or will i brick it?

Did you place the rom md5 file on the external sdcard and did you grant Mobile Odin superuser permissions and enabled usb debugging?

The only thing that happends when i try to launch M. Odin is a blue popup stating that Odin has crashed, so it dosn't come that faar. However just managed to find a thread stating that MOP has trouble with ART, so going back to dalvik on the phone now to see if that might be the problem *crossing fingers*

Have you installed BusyBox from Play? MOP needs that to work.
So recently I rooted my S4 with Kingo and went fine. After a few weeks, I decided to uproot to get the Lollipop OTA. Unrooted through SuperSU app then factory reset. Finished OTA download with no issueand then it failed after two attempts, saying error and I should try using Kies.
That's strange I thought. Then after looking through the phone again, I discovered GSam Root companion is now a system app that can't be uninstalled. Other than re rooting and re uprooting or flashing stock firmware, is there another option. My computer is currently under repair for a broken LCD, so any fix that doesn't need that would help. Thanks!

I then assume that you still run an old version of kitkat (because of the kingo root).
Why not reroot and delete the file? I think you can still use Towelroot because I think you are on an old version. That's an app that you need to install.
Do you have a custom recovery? And did you factory reset before trying to update ota?

What i don't understand is why you are so stuck on getting this OTA update... just borrow your friends laptop, and flash the Lollipop that you want through ODIN. Then factory reset, DONE...

Took it to Samsung and let them do that for me. Didn't lose any data either, and GSam Root let me Uninstall it afterward, which was something I didn't expect. Anyway, thanks for the effort guys!
Lets discuss
Updating

Supersu unroot didnt work for me. I tried that and didnt look for root permissions before updating(dumb idea).
The update failed so i had to volume down + power to get out of it. Now i dont have the update available. :crying:
The failure could be totally unrelated though.
I have to admit... The fact that they are updating the FW on a nearly monthly scale, proves the level of commitment to this phone by Asus. I am so glad I chose it over the OPO.
Same here, I used this guide to root: http://www.asus.com/zentalk/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=9340
I did the unroot procedure with SuperSU before running the update, restarted my phone, tried using the OTA update and after going into recovery it just says "Error". After panicking a bit, I restarted the phone manually, fortunataly I was able to boot again but now I can't update. I don't even see the update as available anymore. As root, all I did was uninstalling some bloatware. What can I do?
