Samsung SM-N9005
Android version 4.4.2
Baseband N9005ZHUENJ1
I have flashed both of the following: philz_touch_6.13.0-hltexx.tar.md5 and philz_touch_6.48.4-hlte.tar.md5 using odin and with both of them everything works fine, the phone is rooted with the exception being that when I boot into recovery (3 button method) it is a modified stock recovery as shown:

I can enter Philz recovery through Nandroid Manager/Recovery.
Is this normal behaviour? I would have thought that booting to recovery (3 button method) would take me to the new recovery.

Thanks for your reply but as I imagine is normal its the bloke behind the wheel that's the problem, I kept using power+vol down+home instead of power+vol up+home. Boots into recovery with no problems.

Which variant of Note 3 do you have N9005, N900T, N900P, N900W8, etc...?
Which os do you have 4.3, 4.4 or 5.0?
And which recovery file did you try to use, twrp or cwm?
False alarm sorry all I had to do was it into download mode and cancel to reboot the phone. Any tips on fixing my recovery boot up?
My model is n900w8 and I'm using cwm on 4.4.2

Are you able to put the phone in download mode (vol- + Home +Power)?, If you do download ROM from any of the sources around and using Odin install the ROM. Do not checked the re-partition box in options. If you're not comfortable doing this or not sure do some reading on installing firmware using Odin.
I have with my a Note 4 variant (SM-N910F) which got bricked after trying to flash a custom rom. Is it possible to return to stock rom or do I have with me just an expensive rock?
Here's a screenshot of what is displayed when the device is powered on:

Yes. Use Odin to flah a stock rom, or better, to flash a recovery. From the recovery you do what yiu want

Thanks for the prompt response. Never used Odin or a flashed a Samsung phone before
If flashing the single stock tar doesnt work, try using "samfirm" to download the latest rom in binary format so that you can repartition the phone with odin.
Just download the file and extract it to get 3-4 seperate tar files.
Select the files according to the tabs in odin (compare the prefixes of the files with the file selection tabs of odin).
This must do the job.

Just for your knowledge:
The red exclamation mark with an Android bot, is the initiation to the stock recovery. That is where you will need to press and hold the power key, and tap the volume up key once. Thereafter, you shall see the stock recovery (It should look like below).

I tried to install TWRP from the app. I selected the correct device and it says it was successful. So I tried to reboot into recovery mode and all it did was give me a warning about non-verizon crap and went into loop. I can boot into download mode and connect to odin just fine, but when I try to flash TWRP from odin it fails. On my note 3 it says:
SYS REV CHECK FAIL : No Version
SECURE MAGICCODE CHECK FAIL : recovery
Any help is greatly appreciated!

If anyone stumbles across this, samsony has firmware for 4.3, 4.4.2 and 5.0. I was able to use the 4.4.2 to restore the stock recovery and the phone worked again.

Been there before. You need to be rooted before you can flash TWRP. Root with ArabicRootApp.exe and unlock the bootloader with adb & unlock_n3.
