I had my S5 rooted a few months ago, but then the update came out that was supposed to fix the bluetooth (last July), and my phone automatically downloaded and tried to install it. My phone was still rooted, so the updated failed. However, my root also failed as well. I could no longer access root applications like Titanium Backup, and towel root told me that it was unable to root my phone. Basically, my phone became frozen in time and was unable to update or do root-level things since this update last July. Now that Lollipop is out, I really want to upgrade, but factory resets do not solve my problem and I do not know of any more permanent way to get my phone back to basics so thatr I can receive OTA updates and have them actually work. Any help is greatly appreciated, as I really do want to upgrade my phone.
Start by downloading your firmware from sammobile, then flash it with Odin......
You'll then be fully unrooted and should be able to receive OTAs......
BTW.....Some people on here say that if knox has been tripped, that can affect OTA too.......
If that is the case, simply download the lollipop firmware from sammobile and Odin flash that instead......no need to OTA upgrade then...

Thank you for this advice. I used to flash stuff from my computer with my old phone, but haven't done so in years and didn't know which program to use. I was unsure if it worked at first, because my phone was the exact same after running Odin and I was expecting a factory reset, but I downloaded and ran the 4.4.4 update and it worked! Again, thanks so much for the help. I didn't really mind hitting "skip download until tomorrow" every day, but I wanted to upgrade to Lollipop.
Glad you got it sorted fella.......If it turns out that lollipop isn't all you'd hoped for, you can use odin to downgrade back to KitKat..........
.....but I think you have to remember to factory reset after the flash, otherwise you'll get bootloops and stuff......

Hi guys! I hope someone could help me. I just bought a Galaxy Note 3 (international version) yesterday. The phone's fine. It's just that I am unable to update. I am able to download it but when my phone reboots it shows a dead android with a red triangle on its chest. I read flashing the firmware via odin can fix it but problem is our internet is hella slow. I couldn't even complete downloading my brother's Note 2 firmware. Any way I can make it install the firmware successfully? By the way it's OTA. I am able to download the update, just won't let me finish installing it. Goes around 35% then the android on the black screen dies with a red triangle on its chest.
EDIT:
I have official firmware, never rooted, just got it yesterday. Still factory new.
version 4.3, build # JSS15J.N9005ZHUBMI7, baseband version N9005XXUBMI5, Kernel version 3.4.0-1626679

Was your phone brand new? And did you check your KNOX status? -- reason I ask, after you've rooted a phone you are unable to recieve OTA updates, unless you use Wanam to fake system status, then you can download the OTA update but it stalls on the install about 35% or so in..
Best advice, is grab the stock image from sammobile (ballache to download I know) then use ODIN to flash her back to original state.

Ah Ok, if it says Official it should be good to go. Seems like maybe the download has gotten corrupt due to an intermittent internet connection.

OK, then maybe you should learn a few things before trying to update - Knox is a security system in latest Samsung phones that is supposed to be triggered/set when you root (or install any custom kernel/recovery). Your initial (old) firmware could still let you root without triggering the Knox flag, and then you can update to the latest firmware for your region using Mobile Odin Pro and still keep your root AND without triggering the Knox flag. However once you update using Samsung OTA / Odin / Kies to a firmware more recent than MJ3 you can no longer root without also triggering your Knox warrany flag - read more about this in the Universal Root De La Vega thread!
i gave up after several tries, since i'm on 4.3 i think that would do for now. maybe it's just downloading a stability update or something? everytime i do an OTA update, it tells me that the download of the new firmware is complete then reboot. when i get to 32% the droid falls flat on its back and shows the red triangle on its chest, over and over. i don't lose my phone data or anything. just won't update. i'll wait for 4.4 Kitkat instead. hope i'll be able to update to that when it comes out.
EDIT: i tried going into recovery mode, wiping cache, and factory reset.. still no dice. maybe Odin's the only way i guess. problem is my internet connection lol
@cptnappy - i also have the same problem...got my note3 n9005 a week ago and I also have the same problem as you....error at 30+%
tried update thru Kies with no luck...same error appears

i managed to update mine using Samsung Kies3 (not Kies, but Kies3). Hope updating OTA is fixed in the future with the update i just did
Hi,
Im having a heck of a time with unrooting my S5.
I have a ATT Samsung S5 model number SM-G900A
I rooted with towelroot and found out that I couldn't get the OTA updates.
After two days now I've tried to unroot three times. All with odin. The first was this linkhttp://www.androidrootz.com/2014/05/how-to-unroot-galaxy-s5-complete-stock.html
and all I got was a fail.
The second was with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2798396 which completed just fine and restored back to factory. However OTA updates still fail. I have done this one twice.
I'm at a loss what I need to do now to really unroot since obviously there are some files still killing the OTA updates. I appreciate any help you can provide.
Thank you in advance
Jim
Hi all,
I'm hoping someone here can assist me. I've not played about with the phone since buying it and seem to have forgotten how to do everything in that time. I used to install custom ROMS on my older phones on an almost daily basis but having kids have prevented me having time to do this any more!!
I have the G900F model and after buying it, the first thing I did was root it and install Philz recovery and Wanam exposed. I haven't needed to do anything else since then. The firmware version on the phone is currently 4.4.2. I see now though that 5.0 is available to us and I thought it was high time I updated.
My preference would be to get OTA working, but having trouble with it due to the fact that it is rooted and has a custom recovery. After refusing to even check for updates, I used Wanam exposed to trick the device status into showing "Official" and I can now download updates OTA. The install fails though, but the error is not on screen in recovery long enough to see why, though I presume it has something to do with the custom recovery.
My first question is whether flashing a stock recovery back on will allow the OTA update to work? If so, where can I get it?
Secondly, if this will still not work I take it I will need to use ODIN instead? Will this factory reset the phone? I just want to update to 5.0 without the fuss of resetting the phone, so hoping people can help me get this to happen.
The chances are that you've tripped KNOX by flashing a custom recovery, if that is the case, it's likely that KNOX is breaking OTA, and will continue to do so no matter what you do. The only way past this is Odin..........

Hey Guys, I'm brand new to these forums, and to this whole community so bare with me.
Basically I bought my T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S5 phone around the time it came out, and I also had installed root on it via towelroot when Towel Root was first released. I did not update the phone at all for a long period of time and everything was working fine, until one day I was browsing under settings and accidentally tapped the "Software Update" button, then T-mobile auto-pushed an update onto my phone.
This update has caused the root on my phone to not work at all (Deemed useless) So I clicked SU and only a black screen popped up when I tried to open the app, so I uninstalled it, reinstalled it then got a message saying "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU Cannot install it. If you just upgraded to Android 4.3 you need to manually re-root your device" So I tried to re-root via towelroot method again. It seems the T-mobile update made my phone "Unsupported/Uncompatible" with TowelRoot's obsolete techniques, so now I'm in dire need of help.
My phone tried to push another t-mobile update (This time to upgrade to Lollipop) but it failed after attempting to install it after a reboot. So not only will my phone not update to Lollipop, but I'm not even rooted anymore and am unsure on how to get back rooted, or what to do next since I used rooting as a primary source to store apps on my SD Card. Kind of like i'm stuck in one spot? (Can't update your phone/can't root it the old method)
I'm brand new guys, Please can you break down to me what I should do, in order to obtain root again, and possibly be able to upgrade to Lollipop As well as prevent further pushed T-mobile updates? Here's some info if you need it
S5 Model Number: SM-G900T
Android Version:4.4.2
Kernel Version:3.4.0-262.. etc. (Tell me if you need the full kernel details)
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank YOU!
Flash this with ODIN
http://download.chainfire.eu/407/CF-Root1/CF-Auto-Root-kltetmo-kltetmo-smg900t.zip
(Will trip KNOX and void warranty)
Or flash a pre-June 2014 KK Kernel, root with Towelroot again, then flash back your current Kernel
Is this the only solution? And also is it the right one? o.o
Can anyone else please give me some feedback on the situation? I want to make sure I do this right, please just a little helps.
Bump

Hey I did exactly what you said and it worked I got root back, but I was wondering how to flash back to my current kernel and keep Root?
So, a few months ago I decided to root my phone with towelroot to give a try on a few root applications, as i was curious, but after that, I decided to remove through supersu it as, even with supersu, was more of a vunerability since I wasn't really using it.
Fast foward a month, I attempted to update my software and was denied with the reason that my device was custom.
Some important info:
- I'm running Android Jelly Bean 4.3, that has never been updated.
- I've attempted a factory reset through the phones recovery mode and made no difference.
- My KNOX waranty value is 0x0, and I would like to keep it that way if possible.
- Phone is factory unlocked.
Also, I've though of using Odin to flash the firmware back, but then I read that there is a possible that KNOX warranty gets triggered, even with a samsung official rom, is this true or am I safe to use it?
My objective is to have my phone back to factory settings (this means wannan xposed is out of the question), in order to be able to update my phone and keep using it, and while there is a lot of similar threads around, most of them reffer to GT-I9505 and GT-I9500 and mine is GT-I9506, which leaves me in somewhat of a doubt wether I should follow those or not.
Thank you for your time.

Flashing a stock rom trough Odin will NOT trip Knox. So just go ahead and flash the firmware you want.

Alright, I assume the proccess is about the same as on the other versions.
Also, should I flash 4.4.2 instead of 5.0.1? The reason I ask is due to this thread.
Update: I flashed 4.4.2 with Odin3 3.10, and it went smooth and knox is still safe, however, for some reason, so thank you Lennyz1988 for the reassurance .
However, I'm not able to update to 5.0.1 Lolipop through OTA, as attempting to update states that im fully up to date.
My phone is running as NL (T-Mobile), factory unlocked and due to my quick research, seems that there is no official OTA update for it. Is it correct or am I looking in the wrong place to update my phone?
