SM-G900a - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Im having a heck of a time with unrooting my S5.
I have a ATT Samsung S5 model number SM-G900A
I rooted with towelroot and found out that I couldn't get the OTA updates.
After two days now I've tried to unroot three times. All with odin. The first was this linkhttp://www.androidrootz.com/2014/05/how-to-unroot-galaxy-s5-complete-stock.html
and all I got was a fail.
The second was with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2798396 which completed just fine and restored back to factory. However OTA updates still fail. I have done this one twice.
I'm at a loss what I need to do now to really unroot since obviously there are some files still killing the OTA updates. I appreciate any help you can provide.
Thank you in advance
Jim

Which baseband are you on now? MF3? MJ6? Before which baseband were you on MDL? or MF3? What root method did you use?
It sounds like you rooted your phone, but did not take measures to prevent over the air (OTA) updating.
That OTA updating will destroy root, and lately also locks your bootloader in a manner that is even more restrictive.
It does not sound like you used any custom rom, and did not use Safe Strap either, but you need to provide more info for folks to work with.

You need to read all threads about 4.3, MJ6, and MJ9 in the "General" and " Q & A" sections of the forum to learn about what is happening with your phone.

Can't update S5

I had my S5 rooted a few months ago, but then the update came out that was supposed to fix the bluetooth (last July), and my phone automatically downloaded and tried to install it. My phone was still rooted, so the updated failed. However, my root also failed as well. I could no longer access root applications like Titanium Backup, and towel root told me that it was unable to root my phone. Basically, my phone became frozen in time and was unable to update or do root-level things since this update last July. Now that Lollipop is out, I really want to upgrade, but factory resets do not solve my problem and I do not know of any more permanent way to get my phone back to basics so thatr I can receive OTA updates and have them actually work. Any help is greatly appreciated, as I really do want to upgrade my phone.
Start by downloading your firmware from sammobile, then flash it with Odin......
You'll then be fully unrooted and should be able to receive OTAs......
BTW.....Some people on here say that if knox has been tripped, that can affect OTA too.......
If that is the case, simply download the lollipop firmware from sammobile and Odin flash that instead......no need to OTA upgrade then...

Thank you for this advice. I used to flash stuff from my computer with my old phone, but haven't done so in years and didn't know which program to use. I was unsure if it worked at first, because my phone was the exact same after running Odin and I was expecting a factory reset, but I downloaded and ran the 4.4.4 update and it worked! Again, thanks so much for the help. I didn't really mind hitting "skip download until tomorrow" every day, but I wanted to upgrade to Lollipop.
Glad you got it sorted fella.......If it turns out that lollipop isn't all you'd hoped for, you can use odin to downgrade back to KitKat..........
.....but I think you have to remember to factory reset after the flash, otherwise you'll get bootloops and stuff......

Factory Reset and Upgrade to 5.0.1

Hello,
I am recently having trouble finding a way to get my phone to where I want it to be. Long story short, I softbricked my phone, and I used ODIN to flash it to stock. I would like to get back to 5.0.1 legitimately, but I cannot find a straightforward way to update my phone through the steps. For some reason, I cannot get my phone to update past 4.4.4 to 5.0.1. Has anyone encountered this before? The upgrade to 4.4.4 from 4.4.2 worked just fine, so I am not sure what the problem is.
I had a similar situation and ended up going to the AT&T tech service center. They updated the phone to recover it with no questions other than its phone number and who you are to verify ownership. I got the 5.0.1 OC3 package but lost everything saved on the phone. Fortunately I backed up the most critical stuff before I started down the path that bricked it.
Depending on who your carrier is that may be your easiest option.

Rooting noob, I think I bricked my SM-g900T :( Help!

so i am an idiot and didn't do proper reading and tried to root my t-mobile S5 running 5.1.1 firmware using CF root method, which got it stuck on the startup samsung screen (with the "powered by android" at the bottom). factory reset and cache clear did not fix the problem. currently i am downloading the stock firmware for it, will take a while.
my questions are the following:
1. Am i doing the right steps to fix this problem? I assume downloading the stock firmware and flashing it with odin is the right thing to do.
2. I'm hearing some people who have had problems after unrooting S5's, saying that they are unable to receive official updates because they get an error saying the phone has been modified in an "unauthorized way" even after unrooting. something about a knox counter? sorry, i have no idea. What are the chances i run into this problem?
Yes, yes and yes. (I don't get the updates)

I am getting the same message when it tried to update my s5 after almost bricking it while trying to flash a custom rom. Had to unroot it from what I'm told to fix the problem and I thought before it is rooted again I'd go ahead and b update. No such luck, man T mobile really wants us to have their darn TV app on our devices . Either way it won't let me update and I'm hoping there's a way around tha f before I gr ugh rooting b it b again. On the brigbt b side I was b able t ok b install Tasker again which for skme b reason seems to be a b issue with lollipop.

Need a little guidance on firmware please

I attempted to root my phone. Got as far as flashing the eng boot img and it kept rebooting. I aborted and needed to go back to stock (at least temporarily.)
My first attempt resulted in wrong fw (seemed open to all carriers, several glitches)
My 2nd attempt was closer. Everything appeared to work fine except for slow/failed downloads in audible and samsung gear app (yet gear app was able to restore all apps to my watch.)
Luckily I posted here last week and I wrote out the firmware I was running BUT with SO many variants this is still pretty difficult.
My model is SM-G935U (on back of my phone it reads sm-g935u with a UD after the model) The firmware was G935UUEU4BQF3 as of last week when I posted.
Currently Im running BQG1
Its unlocked to all carriers and my provider is AT&T. But I dont think Im supposed to download the AT&T firmware.
Any help would be VERY much appreciated. Thanks
