I formerly had a Galaxy S2, great machine, just getting a bit low on memory.
So i bought a fancy looking Z2 with top features, I even have a purple cover for it now! Yeaaahh.
Only,...
I'm totally not happy with my new 'flagship':
- Can't root on 4.4.4 (finally managed to unlock, jeeeej )
- Can't write to SD cart (because I can't root) with all my pictures, movies etc I just bought a 64Gb
- Kitkat 4.4.4 suddenly uses the most ugly emojis, yellow blobs and childish look
(I switched my S2 to Lollipop, great system but same childish design.)
- Go Sms, my favorite has less options (no scheduled messages etc)
- Some older apps won't work anymore?
Also:
- The Camera is not handy placed, just in a corner so you put your finger mostly on it
- Buttons are not handy placed, I regularly press the Camera button when picking up)
I hope you guys have any advice for me?
Except buying a Samsung ?
Get used to it.
When done you'll never turn back

well if you havent kept a lot of data on your phone and is relatively fresh i'll suggest you downgrade and root right now before it becomes a full days work to backup your data. there are plenty of guides available in general forum showing how to do that. i guess your statement "managed to unlock", means you unlocked the bootloader, i hope you didnt before backing up the TA partition, writing on SD can be achieved after you root and install kitkat sd card patch or installing a ROM like MoonWalker by @Pandemic (i'm using it and it's really good btw), also there are plenty of other messaging apps now in the playstore along with different keyboards which should provide you with your desired features and emoticons, that's definitely not a reason not to like your phone.
also the camera and button placements are just becoz of your habits and you will get used to them, i personally had no such problems even after moving from a phone which had power button on the top and no camera button at all, so you'll learn to use it too.
I switched couple of week back... but don't have any serious issue
Hi,
Its sad that you are unhappy with Z2.
I recently switched my primary phone to z2 from iPhone 5S - although totally different OS but I like it as much I liked 5S (apart from Camera , I hope I will eventually learn how to take better pic with z2). Although this is not my first android(I published few unsuccessful apps/games on market) I used note1, xperia x10i, moto e etc.
And off course I don't want to root right now - as I am quite happy the apps/modded-android that comes with xperia. Just downloaded couple of apps I need and got help from XDA to transfer data from iPhone to z2.
But I must say I was terribly unhappy with Note 1- I don't know but started to hate that sh**t phone from the day 1.
Just waiting to receive lollypop update from Sony and may be in future I will stick to Sony and iPad(Love to use it ).

Thanks for your kind reply buddy (I ignore the impolite childish replies over here )
How you mean, backup my TA? I didn't, just used the instructions on Sony and other sites via fastboot.
Is that a big problem?
I was also thinking about downgrading, just the big task and problems you might run into is holding me back.
Regarding the smileys, it's no big issue, but these new Android Lollipop Emojis are awefull. I'm not the only with that opinion. Seems that they are implemented in all new Android apps. (or is it system level).
I'm looking forward to upgrade to Lollipop for the features. But I hope I will be rootable.
It least give me my SD back please. The rest I can live with.
I come from Resurrection remix. Also Pac are very nice ROMs.

You can't root 4.4.4? Bull****, there are enough rooting methods on these forums for that firmware. And yes, I know. it's a lot of work to root then, but that your only option for now. It is something different than having a Galaxy S2.
You can complain about not being able to write to your SD card to Google. They made changes in 4.4.4 causing that ****. It's bull****.
Kitkat uses ugly emojis? Those are the standard android emojis? If you don't like them, then that's you problem... It's your taste.
It sucks for your apps that don't work anymore, but that's not a problem with the Z2. The developer should update their app.
The camera is not handy placed? You knew where the camera was placed BEFORE buying this phone, so it's bull**** to complain about it after buying the phone instead of looking at this before making the decision of buying this phone. I don't have any problems with the camera placement.
Buttons are not handy placed? Preference I guess? You're used to having no camera button on your S2, also I can't relate to this problem accidentely pressing the camera button. It's totally you, I never have this. Maybe once? Twice? But not more.
If you already don't like this about the Z2, what will you not like about other phones? You will always be complaining no matter what phone you have. There are no perfect phones.
My Advice:
Flash and root your Z2 with Niaboc´s Method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/development/stock-4-4-4-23-0-1-0-167-bug-free-t2929402 (If you prefer Stock ROM)
Additionally Xposed Installer and Gravity Box and I bet, you´ll be pleased.

Since I'm not rooted I can't install a recovery, right?
1) Install a recovery
I don't see how to flash it from that tut? What software to use to flash it?
I think I will go for a lollipop version in the end, but for now this seems a great Rom indeed !
About the Emojis,
I have the sony version (but seems on my Samsung also these)

sorry to bring you the bad news buddy but by simply unlocking the bootloader you have voided your warranty and also any chance of getting the official sony lollipop update, the thing is after unlocking your bootloader you lose your DRM keys which are unrecoverable unless backed up before hand. and relocking the bootloader wont bring them back. it causes to lose some functionality like x-reality engine and playstation app wont work anymore, but the good thing is you can use a simpler method to root your device now, you dont have to downgrade. and you can now flash a kernel which is already rooted through fastboot method (i''m sorry i dont exactly know the method, as I rooted using different method), and also you can flash AOSP ROMS like PA and Also CM. also in future some devs will definitely bring some sony lollipop bsed FW so you can use them also. until you have some software related problem which require warranty, you should be fine.

You also loose Sony Bionz image processing which helps to reduce the low light camera noise. There's a method to restore some of those functionality you lost when you unlock the bootloader, find that thread. Next time do a bit of research before you do anything.
Half of the things you mentioned that you hate about Z2 are rather android 4.4 limitations than Z2 problems ?
Well simply you can use DRM feature restoration to restore the functions but it won't restore your lost TA.img file but the functionality.
Hope it will not be by passed with LP. Plus Once you come to Sony Devices you should always wait for LB root plus once you achieve that you're always good to go. If I were you I'd have done a small research on web that what kinda consequences that I will have to face if I unlock the BL. Plus I am on Unlocked BL and I am not receiving any single update now. Not even app updates

This reply makes me so hard laugh lol !!
well let me say this to you:
The Z2 is way better then any other Samsung device and you cant compare the Z2 with the lowest budget phone what i know like the GS2 (Z2 is a high budget device)
Well here are the answers:
- 4.4.4 is rootable, just search or use even google and tadaa !
you found it
- Flash a custom rom and learn to read the changelog because all the 4.4.4 Stock Custom Roms here have fixed that to wright to sd etc
- about the emoij`s, well i like them, so let we dont talk about Samsung`s childesh toy device with alot of plasic and even more worse Emoij`s
- the sms have alot of options you just need to find them
- the camera is well placed and we all like it !!
Advice and what i have to say is:
i guess you have your Z2 less then 1 day and now start already to complain about it and learn to read and to ssearch and to understand because then you get to know everything !!
Enjoy your stay with your Z2 what you totally dont like, it is a totally other device then Samsung, so there are differents, learn to respect and accept it.
Bye !
Once rooted there's a lot of possibilities, install Xposed Framework, then install Gravity Box, a lot of stuff's there.

Yes, I know that you have to be rooted and after that the sky is almost the limit, I've installed my S2 a zillion of times. But see, on Z2 4.4.4. you can not easily root.
I will take the path to reinstall the previous version.
We're not all nerd like most of the peepz here And I'm not a noob either.

Sounds like you shoulda stuck with the iphone, I don't see what benefits you would have coming over to android if you're not prepared to root and try ROMs, yes samsung is a joke, but I can honestly say I have never regretted leaving iOS for android once.........except when the phone hangs during A PHONE CALL!!!! you know the thing it was actually made for - making and receiving phone calls, Not a regular occurrence I must admit but quite an ironic defect of many new ROMs I've tried in the past, LOL

You don't need to be rooted to use PC Odin to install the latest official ROM.
There are great keyboards out there...instead of just one on the iPhone. Look at Thumb Keyboard or Swiftkey. There is even an iPhone keyboard...gasp.
And since you don't want to root (you can unroot for warranty purposes and Samsung is none the wiser....) checkout MyBackup Pro in the market.
Samsung - a joke as a company?!?! Do us a favor and never, ever buy a Motorola phone. If you are going ballistic over a Galaxy, you'll kill yourself with a Droid...
you can just copy all the files from your sd to your computer very very very easily using a usb cable, have you never used a computer before? Or alternatively download dropbox and use that to back up your phone. Little bit of research about how android works might actually benefit you. About the updates, if you wanna get all the amazing features of android compared to iphone, you'll have to put up with the update schedules, but updates don't really matter on android you still have more functions that ios.
Wow ... cool it guys. OP is simply used to the apple way of doing things. Give him some time to explore the wonderful world of Android iam sure he'll start to love it.
OP please google a bit or check the play store you will find the solutions for all your complaints.
Edit
I just checked your other posts, almost all of it is about Samsung not updating the note to ics.
Why do you want the stock ics so badly ?
Do you honestly believe that ics will solve all your problems magically?
Believe me stock ics is a can of worms that is better left unopened . (personal opinion pls don't flame me guys )
but If you are so desperate please flash any custom roms which suits your needs, I recommend paranoid
Just to add, since i got my note i have had to firmware updates. One to 2.3.6 and then the 4.0.3 update. This is since April. Now you tell me of any iphone that has had 2 updates in that timeframe. (including major updates like ics )....
And apple can update easier as in total there are only 5 phone's ,of which only a couple of model get the update. Think his many different droids there are!

Please tell me you're having a laugh.... Have you never been on http://www.damnyouautocorrect.com/ ?
i wanted new set of icons....with flashy colours...i just installed a ROM....and my friend has an iphone and he wanted to change the icons too....o]h wait...you can only change WALLPAPERS in that... thats AWESOME
ACTUALLY I have the Note and I have never rooted. I don't find it necessary. I have an application called Folder Sync, and what it does is it backs up my files every night (especially camera files, but you can set it up to your entire SD card) to Dropbox or SugarSync, it has a lot of options for providers. The benefit is that you don't manually need to connect to a computer or anything. You will always have your files synced up. I even have it so when I delete a file off of the server or my computer, it'll be reflected as well on the phone. I hated having to have to connect my phone to my computer every time I wanted to update a folder, sync something, or download something. Every night my phone waits until 4AM, plugged in and has wifi on to sync my 32 gig SD card with its content.
As for the keyboard, it might take you some time to, you know, actually get used to a normal keyboard. Apple had good autocorrect. But I'd rather take the more accurate typing space on the Note over the iPhone's smart predictive text. Apart from that, I have AutoText Replacements which means I can type ty and thank you will come out. I have "putmail" and my mailing address comes out. This is really helpful, and it can't be done on the iPhone, but yes on Android. Try Ultra Keyboard, that's what I use. Tons of themes, settings and it's fairly intuitive.
There are a lot of benefits to Android. If you're just angry about ICS not out yet in your region, I'm sorry, but many times it doesn't only depend on Samsung. It depends also on the carriers, which most bend over backwards for Apple only because they're what's hot and hip right now.
I'd say that if you're easily frustrated, stick to iOS. If you like to tinker a little, stay with Android. The possibilities are endless with apps and configurations.
Once again, I don't root because I think Android is open enough the way it is. You can download an original rom and install it without voiding your warranty, using PC Odin.

This won't give you full peace of mind compare to Rooted.
Agree, If you are noob then should avoid from custom things and playing of different mods.
There is nothing wrong to have rooted Note with rest of completely stock.
Here are some must reason to root (for me)
- Backup you are creating is just additional data, you can get it again once you have application installed on device. And this data is having rare chance to get delete. even you format(hard reset) this data still survives. Only thing which is better to have is backup of Camera (DCMI folder) which you can't get(here folder sync really need). But i do save it on ext memory card, so in case of anything goe wrong still it will escape.
Now if you are rooted, then you can schedule your backup tottaly different way. Like my system stuff backup will start three days of weeks at 4AM, which backup my contacts, SMSs or watever sytem data.
And rest of three days it backup all newer installed application + data (here you will get app + setting, after restoring even you don't need to enter credential, OR won't lose levels you have completed in games)
- What I need is google Maps, In my country still google don't providing me navigation (just direction), but with moded Map I can get it. And yes root is needed for that.
-Remove lots of bloatware from stock system
-Stoping unnecessary auto starting application on boot.
Reagarding warranty, anytime you can just flash stock ROM with PC Odin and your root will erase and you get warranty back
I have purchased a used Note 3. It is in original condition. I absolutely hate the split settings, bloatware and similar. My last phone was a Xperia Ultra and it felt a lot snappier than the Note.
I need to root my device and to install a custom Rom. Could someone please point me to the easiest way to get it rooted, i do not care if it is visible or not since i have got no warranty on it anyways. And could someone please recommend me a fast, stable and battery friendly Rom that is more similar to the stock Android.
Thanks a lot
for rooting just flash the flashable supersu zip file.

First unlock your bootloader
then install custom recovery
flash super su to root
or flash Slimkat ROM its light and stable.
press thanks if I helped you.
Thanks for the reply. The problem is that all the ROMs i have been able to find still split the settings into categories, i would like them in one row as it is originally in Android. Is there a Rom in which it is like that or is there a tool or program that can do that?

I havent seen that in a while.. i even forgot about it. If you knew how to build you could do this. I wanted to look into this myself but i dont have the time.
Good luck
Cm/aosp/omni based roms are using 1 row setting. X-note has the option to set 1 row setting. Maybe some other tw roms too.
Split Settings?
Are you talking about the tabbed settings interface?
If you are just push the menu button (left of home) and switch to list view.
Funny, I also come from a Z Ultra (a hell of a phone, IMHO) and Sony's flavor of Android felt so much better than the Note. I sometimes regret getting rid of it and keeping the NOte in fact. It all came to which phone had the best camera. I should have thought things twice.
Anyway, I thought to hell with the warranty and installed CM11. It's the closest thing to the Xperia I can think of.
I have battery issues which I had to fix with Deep Sleep Battery Pro. S-Pen lost some functionality. The IR Blaster is not working.
And it's still 100 times better than TouchWiz!
I bought my Z3C 10 weeks ago and still haven't used it other than turning it on for a few minutes etc. I charged it for the first time yesterday and am now ready to start! I had been waiting in the hope that CM11/12 would come to it, but I think it's time to forget about that happening and just start using it.
I'm pretty ignorant of all tech things so would really appreciate any help in being able to achieve the following with it:
Rooted
Free of bloatware
updateable OTA
simple android launcher
all the while without losing quality of camera etc..
I've been suggested just using google now launcher and disabling apps and I've been suggested XPOSED and I've been suggested AOSP and I'm a little confused as to what to go for. I see FXP just posted this: http://fxpblog.co/releases/aosp-lollipop-release-from-fxp-just-in-time-for-christmas/
But I'm not even too sure if that meets my criteria?
It's a phone used 99% for business and once I set it up once, I want that to be it and don't want to be reinstalling ROMS etc. I'd like whatever I do now, to last me until I get rid of the phone in maybe 2 years time as I can't have any downtime (which is why I've chosen the Christmas holidays to migrate from my current phone to the Z3C too )
If anyone could please please advise I'd really appreciate it and you'd be greatly helping me!
Why root it at all?
There's hardly any bloat, and what there is van be disabled.
Adblock plus works for both 3g and wifi almost as well as a adaway.
Install Nova launcher and you are done.

Its impossible to root without losing camera quality. Why would you even want to? Its a stable clean rom they have on there and the extra's baked in are only useful. Just delete all the crap apps, possible with my T-Mobile version (Netherlands) and just keep some of the sony stuff. The walkman app is my default music player since it supports folder playing.
Seriously just use the phone its a quality product.
Thanks a lot for the replies folks, really appreciate it, especially Christmas morning
The reason I wanted to root, is just to have it open for anything that might need root access in the coming 2 years or so of use. I think there's a few apps I have on my Motorolla RAZR-I XT890 (phone I've been using for the last 1.5/2 years) which need root access:
AdAway (if adblock plus does the same job then that should be fine, but I listen to music a lot on youtube and don't want ads there if possible)
Auto Ring (I THINK this needs root access, it's an app that lets you white list certain numbers/contacts so that if your phone is on silent, it still rings - pretty important for me)
InCall Recorder (again I THINK it needs root, it can record calls internally, not using the microphone like most of these apps do - actually, it's never worked properly on my Razr-I, but I'd like to have it there)
Root Explorer (think it needs root, I use this to disable apps, replace default launcher etc, maybe it's not necessary anymore?)
I'm happy to replace all the above but I also use:
CERBERUS - This needs Root access to be hidden from the app drawer, I'm not sure if it needs it for other functions too, but this is very important.
I've a very specific list of apps I use for my phone, k9 mail, dialer one, jorte calendar and widgetsoid, I'm sure these will all still work fine and if the camera will instantly lose quality and ability on a root, I'd prefer to avoid it if possible?
One important thing to note by the way... Before I've had to hire an android expert to set my phone up for me to root it, install a rom etc. I don't like to mess around with things I'm not familiar with and prefer to pay someone who is guaranteed to do it right, rather than researching for hours how to do it, so I'd be looking for the same this time if I'm going down the root route, but if that's not necessary, that could be even easier!
Cerberus doesn't need root to be hidden!

Oh really? So maybe I'd actually get away without rooting so? What are the main reasons to root so?

Honestly, despite feeling like I needed to root my previous N4, I haven't found the need to root this phone. In terms of what I want, there's really nothing pressing that outweighs the loss of camera functionality, etc. In fact, there were a bunch of things that I expected would need root that actually didn't.
The back button on PieControl works with accessibility and doesn't actually need root any more, which was my major worry. My airplane mode and GPS Power Toggles don't work, but those are easily accessible in the editable Quick Settings dropdown. Cerberus is hidden from the app drawer, though it isn't installed as a system app. My Tasker stuff that deals with music toggle pause/next/back works if I use the shell command to input keyevents (despite all documentation saying that should only work with a rooted phone). The computer app lets you do backups and restores, so you don't need nandroid backups, and Titanium Backup is not as big a deal for me, despite its utility for rolling back app upgrades. There is some stuff Secure Settings can't do, like turn the pattern lock on or off, but that's probably the only one I care about, and once L rolls in a month or so, I think that should be taken care of.
Thanks a lot for the comprehensive reply. If there was one place I thought I'd be getting people telling me I should root and do this and that to the phone, XDA would be it, given the responses so far, I guess I'm better off just leaving well alone then? It's good that cerberus is hidden from the app drawer, but you just reminded me of the more important root required install to system app ability. I guess as long as my phone doesn't fall into the hands of a professional phone thief who can clear cerberus with ease, I might be ok though?
Everything else I'll hopefully get by with too, but I'd really prefer youtube without ads!
So given that I might just leave well alone and start using it... How can I just start fresh now? Maybe a factory reset (even though I haven't used the phone)... but what should be the first things I should install to allow me disable/remove all the bloatware and replace the home launcher etc? If anyone could give even a mini step by step it would be amazing!
There's hardly any bloatware. I suggest you use the phone as it is. Just install all the updates from update center and go on using. I'm sure you'll find the Sony launcher better than most other launchers. It grows on you
Sent from my Compact Beast The Third.
You really don't need to root this phone, the softwares are well written as not buggy, most apps these days world's well without much tweaking.
This is my first phony airport any urges to root.
Thanks again everyone!
I'm not sure I mentioned, or if it emulates from my posts, but I'm quite particular about the way I have it set up hence wanting to remove pretty much any app I don't use, I've been using ZEAM launcher for about 4 years on my current phone and previous. It hasn't been updated in about 2 years now, but as long as I can have the following I'll be ok:

Right now rooting involves unlocking bootloader. There is no root method for locked bootloader
What would be the best way to disable/delete/replace apps I wonder and how do you know what's safe to disable and what's not? Is it just a case of disabling everything or can you delete apps too? Anything else I should be aware of before I start the migrate?

It's meant to be a lot better, I haven't started using it, but size wise it's pretty much the same, you won't notice a difference using it or in your pocket lets say.
My razr has been slow too, but I think I'm just putting it through too much but other than that it's been a great phone.
I need a phone that can handle multi intensive apps running at the same time, maps, phone, music etc. I wouldn't think you'd be disappointed.

Don't root, disable bloat where you can. Google now launcher on this phone is great!
May I also recommend the ringke fusion clear case.
Now that the Android 7.0 factory images have been released and most (all?) of the custom ROM & kernel devs are jumping to Nougat, I'm actually missing Marshmallow.
Nougat has some a few interesting features, but it seems like Marshmallow is more stable and is faster (& maybe better battery life too). Maybe this is because the N6 is a 2+ year old device now.
All these new custom ROMs are popping up with "base" versions, lacking much of the functionality they had in Marshmallow. Obviously, that will change over time.
But it leaves me feeling a little empty. I like Marshmallow. It runs well on my device. There are a few apps I use that haven't been updated to Nougat yet and are incompatible. And it leaves me sad to see that development has effectively stopped for MM, even though Google continues to release updates.
I have experimented with building ROMs in the past (Pure Nexus, Dirty Unicorns). Maybe I'll have to learn how to actually build a ROM from scratch to fill this void. Or stick to the "boring" factory images LOL.
I think nougat actually lasts longer. My experience might not be indicative of yours so that's just my opinion. Maybe wait for the apps to get optimized for nougat as well? It might be too early to judge I think

So far I like M better...
Pros and Cons
Would be nice to have a Pros and Cons section. If you post yours I will update the table here.
M Pros (N Cons):
=============
Adaway works out of the box
All root file managers can access the system files.
Xposed.
Layers don't work in N
Faster notifications
Working hotspot hack
Mature GPS (problems reported in Nougat)
N Pros (M Cons):
=============
More updated security patches.
Quick toggles with one swipe.
Keyboard shows numbers on top if entering a password.
Doze (debatable if it is useful or an improvement over M)
Smoother with better battery life? (very questionable!!)
Display can be resized
Saturation of the colors can be changed
Good looking and more functional notifications

For AdAway to run on N you need to flash the systemless host file, then install AdAway and it works.
I think with each in every Android update this always happens. You can choose to wait to update if you want everything to work like you had it, or you can update then wait for everything else to catch up. The choice is yours. I like to update to the newest OS to see what Google has been working on. Everything will work eventually. If you prefer M then stick to it, sooner or later you will need to update to get the latest security.

That is what I meant by "out of the box". Adaway always worked with every previous release. This is the first time you need to flash something to make it work.
I will add security to the Cons for M.

Quick panel on the status bar without having to swipe twice. Of course with customs roms you can do smart pull down right or left, also now you can edit the layout without needing a custom ROM.
I like the fact that the you dont have to use the quick tiles and they are just toggles as they should be. There is no good reason a toggle needs to be that big. It was one of the worst changes Google made. Guess they hear enough complaining.
The new doze feature does seem ti be working but it is not helpful as it kinda defeats the purpose of an always connected device.
Other then that I cant say it is really better.

Can't say anything about the keyboard. I have never nor will I ever use Google's keyboard.
I actually like Nougat better. I feel it's faster in installing apps smoother overall better battery and a refreshing new ui. Like the jump from kitkat to lollipop. U better learn how to compile because i have been using dirty unicorns 7.0 and its just:good: . I cannot talk about stock os maybe that's why our experiences differ?
Still on Marshmallow and plan on being on it for the foreseeable future. Do not see anything in Nougat that is game changing enough for me to change up right now.
And I also think it is to early to pass judgement between the two. Marshmallow has been around for over a year and therefore devs have had the opportunity to create, test, and mod it to perfection. It is tried and tested at this point. I imagine this same topic comes up whenever a major update comes along. Nougat is still new. In 6 months time, Nougat will be in the process of becoming just as stable and customized as Marshmallow is now. Also keep in mind that Marshallmallow is still barely on that many devices and is still very current and up to date.
Another big deciding factor for me is Xposed. I run a couple Instagram accounts which requires me to post stuff that nobody else has. I acquire that material thru Xposed modules. Also with minminguard, Youtube background playback and ad remover, and Greenify Xposed version, I can't imagine moving on without it. I do not plan on moving on to 7.x until Xposed is updated for it, as well as the modules I use. Keep in mind that this may never come, as Xposed updates are not guaranteed.
In short, I am perfectly fine with staying with Marshmallow. Latest updates from my favorite ROM are from September and as time goes by, being open source, I can merge latest security fixes and build it myself if need be.
PS: I have not even tried Nougat at all. Not even developer previews. Just do not see any valid reason to do so in comparison to Marshmallow.

I'm in the same situation as well. I am probably also one of the few who has never ran Nougat. I'm at a point right now where I need everything stable and working as life has been very busy lately. I also will be staying with Marshmallow until a very stable version of Nougat comes out, esp since I have to change over the radio and bootloader.
I also use Xposed heavily and the current themes that I have..... I don't want to do without just to have the latest version. I'll wait until next year if I have to if thats how long it takes to get Nougat up and running with fully supported Xposed as well.

I'm a grown-up old dude, and I don't really use my phone like most kids nowadays, my social network footprint is like a lil lovebird. I think I post more here than any other web forum/social place. But i feel my battery is a lot better, not just a bit but a lot, the phone seems faster and snappier, and the only thing I miss from Xposed is blocking adds in YouTube, most of the time you can skip those so not a biggie, and YouTube screen off playback module. Everything else seems better to me on Nougat and I didn't felt the same from LP to MM. I mostly flash aosp Roms or stock based which probably adds to my perception. I know that cm is basically based on aosp like anything Android.
At the time of GB custom Roms were the rule for me cause plain Android lacked many features that cm and others had, but as I grew older I seem to be running less custom options on my phone and have less patience than before to deal with sod, reboots, and such. I still experiment, and when there's something really new I'll flash my phone, but seems I always end up running some kind of aosp/modified stock rom.
If you want a lot of options and customization, stay on MM. Like every other update before this custom roms haven't catch up but it will get there and we'll have this same conversation around October next year.
Probably not on this parts of XDA.

I am a fan of N and have been since the July 18th NDP5. I like the lock screen notifications much better. I like and use split screen (not all the time but when I need it, it works perfect and easy) . I am becoming a bigger fan of security and things being more locked down. The things we really need will come in time they always do (it did just come out). I have always gotten good battery life and still do. I think the stock N is getting much better than stock MM. I like Android Pay so I am actually trying to live with no root on PureNexus, I do really miss adaway the most and being able to substratum the lock screen notifications. But at the end of the day I am fine with it for now.
Overall I am glad to be on N and believe it will get much better once we get 7.1 and higher.

Also there's this, for some weird reason I like this crap, lol, I'm a dog person, have a mini pinch and a pitbull.

I get having everything work, that's one thing that stock Google Android offers is there are minimal bugs vs. custom ROMs. I'm used to a lot of features trying to do without gets to me. One issue is all the ad related things like youtube and Ad away so I use those mods. Plus minminguard. Also some things like the notification light and disabling heads up/toast notifications.
I'll wait until Chroma or DU drops N then I may try it. I'm using DU's latest M ROM and it works 100%.
What is that screenshot of ? the animals ?

That's the cat game in Nougat.
Thanks for the feedback everyone. Maybe I'll do a build of Pure Nexus 7.0 and give it another try. I see recent commits for controlling the LED!

After a few days Nougat on my N6 I think that Marshmallow consumed less battery power.
My battery usage is on par with what I had on MM on the MOBXXX roms, the older roms were better, but MOB was snappier.
I like that the QS tiles can be arranged now without the tuner, the new controls on the first swipe, and the new notifications. Also the much shorter optimizing apps time.
So I wouldn't go back
I also think marshmallow is faster and more fluid. Let's see what happens with 7.1.

I saw that a lot of people ask a lot of other people who had the time to flash the new android pie,
I decided to share my experience with it so far so you wont have to go searching in forums for stuff
*recent apps are still the same.
*switching to 4k mod using adb commands no more requires you to install a special dialer, it works fine with the dialer that comes with the firmware, also recent apps are no longer black.
*I have to be honest I flashed a firmware that isnt for our single sim device and isnt even for my region but the animations in it are kind of weird, I cant say slow or fast but are weird in my opinion.
*camera UI is changed, I dont see anything special though, you can now have the google lens app which has new features that im sure most of you already know about (like reading and copying texts, identifying products etc...), video recording doesnt record HDR as some have stated, either that or I have not found out how to use it yet, but there is FULL HD 960 fps now.
*night mode does not work I dont know if its because of the firmware or that it simply doesnt work.
*phone does not feel as snappy as oreo I am being very honest, especially with power button, when I press it it takes about half a second for the phone to turn on screen.
*notification settings are new like what you saw on other devices, though I wanted round edges, but its still edgy corners like always.
*battery didnt show improvement (tho needs further testing) but it didnt also show worse so thats a good start.
*no SDR to HDR as people thought.
*sound levels didnt change, system touch sounds are still the same, ringtone and notification tone still the same
so far thats all I have encountered Ill let yall know when anything special pops in my eyes while i use the device.
*note:
I would really say to all you who have not received the update yet, there is no really something to be hyped about, just wait for your carrier to release the update.
if you have any further questions, feel free

Using the Google phone call app was my choice since Sony are not updating their dialer and we still have the oldest one, and I'm very happy that the recent apps are no longer black, thanks for the info, I agree we shouldn't get so hyped about it, since the most iconic features are not included like gestures, new nav bar, etc

If you're upset about gestures not being included by default, you shouldn't be because this xda app on playstore (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xda.nobar) will get you a similar experience. There are alot of customization options as well. I've been using it for several months now.

Man I tried the mentioned above also I tried so many different ones and finally I come to a conclusion that this is the best one for me :
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fb.fluid
So I'm totally fine for them not including the gestures but the new recent app windows are better than the current ones

נו ברור, כי מחוץ לארה"ב כל הרשתות הסלולריות אותו דבר (וטוב שכך).
I'm from Australia and my phone was purchased in Israel. Flashed the Pie VN on my G8141 and all's working great. Including volte which is not available in Israel. I unlocked my bootloader and everything so I have magisk and I'm using the lawnstep module to get the new recents menu, only better because lawnchair has a bunch of extra features.

Get magisk beta or canary, install the latest lawnchair beta, go on the magisk manager and install lawnstep (a module), reboot, and enjoy the actual pie recents menu. Improved. Not a replacement, but the real thing. And you can even keep it while using the regular navbar!

It does, but its a single lens camera, so it wont be as real as 2 lens camera phones.
You can download it via google play, and it works since ever, since marshmallow i guess or nougat its not something new

About the SDR to HDR conversion, the XZ2 and XZ3 don't have it as a setting called "SDR to HDR" but it's on the "Video image enhancement". Doesn't the XZ Premium have It? (Oreo already has it but does Pie convert it to HDR? )

I have a question tho, I have a locked bootlader, and flashed this VN update, it has nothing to do with the bootloader right? I havent messed anything, you know how it is in Israel, the slightest change in a device can give the company a reason not to do you any favors and fix your device under warranty...
so I am all good right? nothing is wrong with flashing this update as its legit right?
Does Sony's Android 9.0 support the Camera2 API (HAL3) required by Google Camera?
What about the sound? Xzp have a horrible low (or poor) sound specially YouTube, Facebook videos, etc, music with Sony music app are fine.
Thanks.
