Mobile hotspot/tethering noob questions. - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im using my verizon S5 on t-mobile, I'm rooted and on optimal rom. Okay so Its my first time trying to use my phone as a hotspot for other devices to connect to. I was following some instructions online for how to set it up, seemed like it went well. I had my other devices connect to it, said they were connected and was all good. Then when I tried to get to the Internet on the devices they had no Internet access. Anyone have a good how to guide on this? Thanks alot

Wireless Tethering

Does anyone know if the Wireless Tether App for rooted devices works on the Tab? I can't get it to work on my end and most of the information online talks about tethering the tab to a phone. Thanks for any help you can provide.
I haven't tried it myself, but did research this and the answer I got was yes.
Why do you need to use a third party application why the tab natively has access point function already?

Ive tested tethering with att and simple mobile sim both work with the stock settings options. Also used it as a hot spot.
Because some carriers, Sprint as an example want another 30 per month for that functionality. Thieves I tell you!

T-Mobile USA blocking wifi hotspot

Been using my Google provided wifi hotspot feature since the n1 including up until about an hour ago when I got the pleasant message on my laptop screen that in order to use my phone as a hotspots I need to pay T-Mobile $15 per month. Anyone else have this happen and are there any known workarounds? Running bugless beast pixel edition.

How long were you using your hot spot? I quickly browsed a bit on my tablet to see if I'd get a message but didn't. I'm running CM9 on my phone.

From reading the article, I wasn't sure if it would affect all users or just HTC Amaze 4G owners.

There is a similar post in the HTC One S forum with a fix. Just added a new APN with nothing but epc.tmobile.com in the config and it seems to have fixed the problem......for now anyway.
Just got throttled again with the new apn settings. Looks like it may be time for a clear card.

Change the name of your wifi hotspot and it should fix it. Worked for me when I got that message.

damn a day late. Called Tmobile and after talking with customer loyalty just ended up paying for it. They did however give it to me for $10 instead of $15 and didn't make me extend my contract. I will probably end up getting a clear card for internet now and calling them back to cancel the hotspot feature. Good to know about your fix though.
happened to me too, running stock rom, i'll try the name change method later

I did this:
1) settings
2) Wireless & Networks
3)Portable Wi-fi hotspot settings
4) Where is says Router name (SSID): I change the original name.
I did not work.
Is that what you meant when you say Change the name of your wifi h.s.? If not I could use a little help. Thanks
Well its now happened to me.
I'm running Mark V ICS ROM with CM9 and used Barnacle... was tethering my laptop then all the sudden I got the txt from T-Mo about adding or be blocked... so I scrambled and try to find device manager to freeze it...buy can't find it anywhere. Now I got a message saying my tethering is blocked.
Does anyone know what system app or process is reporting? Like I said...I froze device manager in other phones and it worked...just can't find it on this one

changing your settings won't help to work around throttling.
apparently you need to stop using chrome as your browser.
I read somewhere also, that tmobile can't tell you are tethering if you are on a mac.
EDIT
{Seems that it is false that tmobile can tell if you are on a mac, but it does appear to be true that tmobile can tell when you tether if you use the wrong browser in the device you are tethering to. So it doesn't matter if you change your settings or you get a different tethering app - just use a safe browser}

Still no work around? Its not about the throttling... its about using the hotspots feature and the data we already pay for and something built in ad a feature of the phone.

it seems that T-Mobile has blocked the use of wifi hotspot
try another app here (via USB)

I just got the tethering block after I installed Google Chrome on my laptop which was weird so I went back to using internet explorer and I'm not blocked. I gave the Galaxy Nexus running stock 4.0.4.
I'm using AOKP ROM Build 37. I just tethered Wifi Hotspot to my A100 tablet, it's accessing the internet just fine using Boat Browser. Other apps connecting to the internet just fine too. Wonder if only the stock "T-Mobile" ROMs that have the tethering blocked.
I personally think it's unethical for carriers/providers to charge extra for mobile hotspot. After all I'm paying the 2GB or 3GB or 5GB so I should be able to use it.. Hope for a class action suit against the carriers for such unethical practice to gouch more money from the consumers..
Edited: I use ROM Toolbox and change the DNS on the tablet to Google DNS for it to work. The default DNS did not work.
Use Safari in Mac
I am using Nexis One for more than two years and yesterday I go the t-mobile hotspot message. I initially thought maybe I am over 1GB and they are doing this. After reading this thread, I changed the SSID and tried with Chrome on MAC and I still had the error. I tried with Safari on MAC and I can use the hotspot. I am writing this using Nexus one hotspot with Safari on Mac.
I was pretty pissed when I noticed that they did this yesterday with my G2. C'mon T-Mobile, this is an old phone that isn't going to get the bells and whistles of ICS. At least you can let us have this! I'm running stock but am now considering moving to CM7. Does anyone know if WiFi hotspot works, with chrome, using CM7 on t-mobile?
I'm also wondering if it has anything to do with the browser agent. In remember being able to change a browser agent with desktop chrome and Firefox through an addon. Does anyone know how to do that with tablet chrome? I only know how to switch between mobile and desktop but that doesn't appear to make a difference
Well..I got hit about a week ago and was blocked..funny thing...I flashed a new ROM and when I tried it again..I used internet explorer...was blocked....then I tried FireFox and boom. I'm back on
Running a week now on new ROM and using hotspots tethering for my laptop and my wife's iphone. Kids iPod and daughters iphone and still running strong
Odd isn't it?

Every browser except chrome are working for me on stock. Have you been able to run ICS on something connected to your t-mobile phone, via WiFi hotspot, and use chrome to browse the web? I'm trying to see if a custom ROM restores this capability
I run ICS..but I don't use Chrome
On a side note..I was also running another ICS custom ROM with different kernel when I initially got blocked.

tethering in Kit Kat on T-Mobile

I am on tmobile and i don't have a tethering option plan. I have always been able to WIFI tether my phone by changing the user agent on my laptop browser or by connecting to a VPN. I have tried just about all KIT KAT versions out there and with all of them i get the tmobile proxy page asking e to sign up for tethering. I tried connecting my other phone to the wifi and surf so it looks like and android phone surfing and it gets the same proxy page. Is anyone else seeing this as i use my phone to tether my tablet and laptop when traveling?
What T-mobile plan doesn't have tethering?
doesn't work on mine either. even if i connect to vpn.
just also found out that on kitkat, phones will use the ipv6 tmobile network so if your vpn is ipv4 only it wont connect.
you'll have to change apn to work on ipv4 to make it work.
anyway, my vpn is ipv4 only so i changed apn to connect. on my phone i can connect but on my laptop i cant.
tmobile page always pops up.
anybody got a work around?
I tried with stock, cm and aokp and they don't work. Guess carriers worked with Google to patch that up. But I have multirom so I can boot into 4.3 and tether if I need. I thought T-Mobile enabled 200mb of free tether for prepaid accounts.
Maybe you can try with this app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.kernelxp.freetether
It requires root access, btw..
There's this too. Apparently Nexus 5 users have a whole thread for this.

Last response is the fix. Needs root though because you have to edit a system file. I guarantee it works because I've done it.

Could T-Mobile be blocking browser traffic coming from my nexus 2013? I did the fix on my nexus 4 and I was able to use it fully, now I am only able to use email.
Ok i fixed it in. in case anyone else runs into the same problem, change your APN info to ipv4: go to settings, more, mobile networks, access point names, click on the access point and change ipv6 to ipv4
The database edit works, but I can't get it to work without it. I should have 2.5 GB of tethering, so that's not the issue. Shouldn't it just "work"?
Anyone have 4.4 16S on Tmo US tethering completely stock without root yet?
I'm pretty angry that I lost my ability to tether with this update and really don't want to root!
Tethering works just cine for me with edit posted above. Just did it and tested.

Doesn't work with my N4 (mako, KRT16S), set the APN and Roaming APNs in T-Mobile GPRS (fast.t-mobile.com) to IPv4. Still get the popup on my iPod Touch, which worked before under 4.3. Just for giggles, going to try usb tethering with my Chromebook -- ethernet tethering via microusb cable works fine.
I thought I'd read that Google incorporated code that told the carrier if hotspot tethering was enabled. Looking for that again... This really stinks, I'm philosophically opposed to paying my carrier a surcharge to tether when I'm already paying for data. Maybe flashing back to 4.3 is a good thing....
This worked...!

I am not rooted on Tmobile US and I get to tether to my Note10.1 2014 tablet no problem. Regular hotspot setup does not work as pointed out after KitKat but I am using Open Garden and I can tether again without the need to root.

I noticed an (unverified) suggestion of how to do this without root on the Nexus 5 thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48332853&postcount=299
Seems worth trying. You'd probably also need to do the the change from change ipv6 to ipv4 mentioned earlier.

Does the same trick to enable tethering work on 4.4.2 on the Nexus 4?
I'm now being teased by an OTA update. Unfortunately I'm root and modified things because of the tethering problem, so I can't get the update OTA (I believe).

Best Tether App for Note 3

I have a rooted Note 3 (SM-N900T) and although I am from the UK and I bought a US phone, everything is still thankfully working properly. I am with 3 (Mobile Carrier) and I have an unlimited internet plan which has been upgraded to 4G.
I was wondering what exactly is the best way to share my internet plan so I can tether my phone to my laptop and maybe even let it act like a hotspot. I have tried LOADS of apps including WiFi Tether, Baranacle, FoxFi and many more and for whatever reasons, they all don't seem to be working. 1 of the reasons I originally rooted my phone was to able to freely tether it (As I've paid top dollar beforehand) and now none of apps seem to be working.
Am I missing something ?

Unlocked SM-N900T but Mobile Hotspot Is still prevented from functioning freely

Hello, I have a very big issue with my Note 3. I looked into the issue of Mobile Hotspot being restricted even though the phone itself was unlocked through T-Mobile's phone unlocking process.
I really need the mobile hotspot to be used freely since this phone is planned to be used on other countries outside of the United States. In some countries they do not restrict mobile hotspot tethering and you are free to do so just as long as you have the data available. Also this annoys me that in apps like Shareit, I could not use it if I don't have a sim that can use Mobile Data. That screws me up because the app cannot turn on the mobile hotspot.
Would really appreciate help on this very dire situation.
Experiencing countless bootloops already by following that framework-res.apk modding to remove Tethering provision.
Thanks in advance.

A part of your problem can be solved by the free app, Foxit. It turns on the Hotspot for tethering.
I don't know whether the pro version can solve the file sharing while using ShareIt.

I've not been around for a while.
I rooted my sm-n900v, unlocked the bootloader, flashed Jasmine 6.1 and voila, the hotspot is unlocked.
See whether you can do same.
