[Q] How To Root BOA8? - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Currently I'm running touchwiz on the latest 5.0 lollipop version. I've tried several different rooting methods and I keep getting stuck on this one error code in odin. Here are the codes:

You can't install Philz on the Verizon S5 because the boot loader is locked. You can root OA8 using these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3020546 just make sure to go back to NK2 first then follow the old NCG root method.

Thanks this for sure helped. I got it to pass and work, but how long should it take, because my phone has been stuck on the verizon screen for about 10 to 15 minutes. My odin window said it passed so it should work, but how long does this take?

I had that problem as well. I think you need to factory wipe from recovery (volume up+home+power on boot), but there might be a better way to fix the problem.

Hey man, thanks for all the help. I got it rooted, and I installed safestrap. Now I was wondering if I could install cm12 and lollipop on this device, you know of anyway?

No, you cannot install CM12 or any other AOSP ROMs. With a locked bootloader and safestrap you are limited to only installing touchwiz (TW) ROMs based on the same build you currently have on your phone. For you that means TW ROMs based on BOA8. Look in the Verizon Galaxy S5 Android Development section, I think there are only two right now.

Currently I'm running on NK2 so are there any that you recommend for that, or is there anyway I could upgrade to lollipop?

Same advice as I gave for the BOA8 ROMs, look in the development section for ROMs based on NK2, pick the one that has the most features you want or looks the best to you and try it out. For upgrading to lollipop, follow this guide:

[Q] Soft Bricked S4 Checked all other threads

Hey guys this is my first post here and I am in need of some help. I have rooted several phones in the past with no trouble before my galaxy s4. I was trying to downgrade my s4 so I could root but managed to soft brick my phone in the process. Trying to turn on my phone I encounter and error saying "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again". I have tried various methods I have found on the forums. Trying to recover firmware in Kies I get an error saying "Firmware Update encountered an unexpected error". Whenever I try to flash anything in odin I get an error.

I don't really know what else I can try. My goal is to try to get back to stock.
Are you on mdb firmware? I'm guessing not. You need to flash the same firmware you were on in Odin. If you've taken any ota updates you're on something newer than mdb. There are Odin tar files in the general forum, look for those

As jd said, you need to flash the firmware you were on before. MDL and MF3 are other 4.2.2 firmwares, MK2 is the 4.3 firmware, and NB1 is the 4.4.2 firmware. Unless you've had your phone since around launch and never taken an update, you're probably at least on MF3.
going through the same thing

Kies doesn't work for us, you'll need to use the NB1 full ODIN files in the general section.

That's what I said, get the NB1 files and flash. You only have to downgrade to root.

[Q] Odin FAIL after Nand write start

Hey, guys. I left my G2 to go back to my GS4, and I'm having a bit of trouble. I'm trying to get back to an earlier firmware to gain root and flash custom recovery. Currently on NB1 firmware. TowelRoot does not work.
Anyway, I downloaded the stock ATT Firmware for my phone. UCUAMDL. When I go to Odin, Auto reboot and F reset time is checked. Re-Partition is not checked. Odin sees my phone. I hit PDA or AP and load my firmware file and hit start. Everytime, it fails after Nand write start.

Your phone has a locked boot loader which prevents a full downgrade. If you are on stock NB1, you can adb sideload the NC1 OTA update file. The all things AT&T should have the link.

If I sideload NC1, will I be able to install custom recovery and flash custom ROMs? Or will that require the MK2 downgrade to flash custom recovery after root?

You will be able to root using towelroot and install touchwiz based custom roms. There is a version of the google play edition that works (there are some known issues though).
The stock recovery cannot be replaced. We have a special recovery (this recovery is available during normal boot itself) called safestrap that can be used to flash the custom roms.

Oh, wow. What happened? I guess Samsung stuck it to us one final hard time. Made things so much harder. Thanks for the clarification.
Unfortunately you cant install Safestrap Recovery while on NC1. At least I haven't been able to at all. Really f'n hating this crappy updated phone I got from ATT as a replacement for my broken old on with the good bootloader.
You should be able to, once you set selinux to permissive mode. Towelroot was also updated to do the same.

Soft Brick?? HELP!

Ok, so I rooted my phone using a method where i flashed an older kernel then used towelroot to root, and then flashed back to NJ4. All was going well, and i installed the safestrap recovery. Then, today i was tryin to install the CM12 for the S4, and i messed up where i put the files for this, so when i was in safestrap, it told me it failed. I hit reboot, and that is when my phone essentially 'soft bricked'. I tries to boot up, fails and goes into download mode. I tried pulling out the battery, tried to go into recovery, but i cant do it. I tried to flash 4.2.2. stock s4 firmware thru odin, but it kept saying "Can't open the serial(COM) port." and fails. I can't do anything right now, please help im panicking Dx
UPDATE: I tried again to flash stock and now when i try to boot it tells me "firmware upgrade encountered an issue.." now when i try to flash something it won't let me because odin fails and says

HELP
Someone wiser then me will probably come in but if you can get to download mode no big worries. The com port issue makes me think drivers or the USB port. I would try different USB port and potentially uninstall drivers and reinstall. I believe skip makes a tool kit for s4 today may help. Can you see the device in adb?

I updated my last post btw. Dumb question but...what is adb?
EDIT:
Got it. I found a link to a rootable 4.4.2 md5 file and flashed it and it worked!
Not compatible
Well CM12 CM11 no CM period is compatible with out S4 because of the locked bootloader and youre trying to use the wrong firmware in odin once you upgrade to 4.4.4 or 4.4.2 you can no longer downgrade and go down to 4.2.2 so stop trying that you need to either download NB1 or NI1 odin files and restore it that way thats if you havent completely messed up youre phone Good Luck!

I'm not sure regarding the actual rooting process, but I can tell you that I've successfully flashed Philz Recovery onto my S5 (SM-G900F, running official android lollipop 5.0 before that) just a couple of days ago.
I've used Odin 3 (v3.10.6) and Philz Recovery (v6.57.8). Everything went smooth and without any issues - flashed it in my first try. So in case you haven't tried that specific combo already, I'd strongly suggest giving it another go.
As for the custom rom goes...I've flashed the Resurrection Remix rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/unified-development/rom-resurrection-remix-5-3-4-t3033255). The rom includes root as well btw, so no need to manually pre-root your S5. Based on my personal experience this is by far the best rom for the S5 And I can only suggest giving it a try.

SM-G900T (Tmobile) tried rooting and now wont boot! HELP PLEASE!

I followed the guide here:
http://www.tomsguide.com/us/samsung-galaxy-s5-guide,review-2821-4.html
and used Odin and according to Odin3.07 everything should have gone right, but now my phone will not boot!
Please help.
I just wanted to root it to remove tmobile bloatware and now I don't have a phone.
I think the problem is that I recently updated to Tmobiles newest OTA update (maybe 5.11??) and I am guessing that this root does not work with it.
How can I get this sucker back up and running?
Please help!

I can get into download mode and recovery mode, I just don't know what to do.
Just download the latest stock firmware and flash using odin on download mode.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo.../compilation-s5-g900t-stock-firmware-t3042400
Make sure that you understand which version (you should flash the same one you were currently using ) you flash and follow the steps word for word.
EDIT: Keep the cable plugged into the computer until you have reached the boot animation. (just to be safe )
EDIT 2: you might get a boot loop so just format and clear cache. (you could probably get away with clearing the cache)
You the man!
I was downloading a firmware from SamMobile, but it was going to take 6 hours to get. Your link was only 30 minutes, and now my phone is back to its original state!
Sucks that I am not rooted (not sure if you can root 5.11) but I am sooooooooooo glad to have my phone back.

Thanks!!

You can root 5.1.1. Though you have to have a patched kernel (G900W8). I usually just flash the recovery and move to different Roms.
