[Q] Help!! Verizon Branded S5 - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I decided to follow a buddies advise and save $100 and order a verizon s5 instead of ordering a no brand, unlocked one on ebay. it is basically the same phone for specs and what not, just verizon bloated. So, i bought it and called att and got the sim card activated with the phone and now my phone has data and phone. my problelms are this:
I want to get rid of all the bloat stuff
I cant use the tethering on anything because it wants a verizon subscription and i am with att.
my data speed isnt the 4g/LTE that i should be getting. according to the att rep, PROBABLY because it is a verizon phone. i get H+ speed,
which a buddy tells me is basically "3.5G".....lol
i have been able to get root access as one of the fellow techs at the shop is pretty good with this stuff. but he tells me that everything he sees/knows,
it cant be done because of the bootloader they used.
is there anything i can do to be able to do the tethering and get my speeds up? that at least would be suff!! i am a computer tech so i can follow some direction if you
can just point me in the right direction, i would be ever so grateful. thanks in advance....

update
i have done some research and found this tool called safestrap. LOVING IT! was able to get it installed and working with little to no effort. downloaded a couple of roms and loaded them into a rom slot(not stock) and everything is what i wanted with the exception of my data speed. still cant seem to get the 4g/lte working no matter what. ATT claims it is because it is a verizon phone...most likely. got the bloat stuff off and the tethering is working now. only issues now is the damn data speed. connected to wifi most of the time but when i am not, wow...is it alot slower than usual. any help on that would be great!! thanks again peeps....your site is AWESOME!!!

There's no help to give. You can't get 4G speeds on AT&T or T-Mobile with a Verizon phone.

I read on one site that you can actually switch S5s to other CSC codes by loading the desired stock firmware and using Kies. It said Kies sees the mismatched CSC and uses the one loaded instead of the device's. I haven't tried it, but I was wondering if anyone has?

[Q] Updates using an MVNO?

I searched around the board and could not find anything on this so I hope someone can help. Due to circumstances beyond my control (errr...job loss) I am thinking of moving to a MVNO (Simple Mobile) that uses T-Mobile for my Vibrant. What I am concerned about is getting the GPS fix once it is available. Does anyone know if I will still get it from OTA with the MVNO since they are still using T-Mobile? Or once it is released if I could pop in a T-Mobile prepaid SIM and get it via wifi as long as I will be using T-Mobile? I know that in the future with CM or other mods I will be able to move to Android 2.2 but right now I am hoping for a fix for the GPS issue. I have tried the other GPS fixes and they have not quite done it.
Thank you for any input!

Wifi should work. Or just wait for someone to grab it and post it here. Then you can just apply it manually.
Thank you for the reply, I was not even thinking about it being posted here but of course it will be. Thanks again.
And probably well ahead of when you would actually get the OTA update.

[Q] AT&T over Verizon

So my question is quite simple, and before I get flamed, yes I have tried searching. I don't think I'm typing the correct sequence of words if there is already something on this. I never post obviously, I normally creep and derive my answers that way. Obvious again that I've been here since 2012
My question is if there is a way / guide to overwrite/reprogram the phone with the AT&T firmware and software and replace the Verizon that is currently on the device. I brought the phone over from Verizon to AT&T and there are just a couple complications that are just a bother and Just over it.
I would appreciate any guidance and information any of you could provide on the subject.

I don't know if you can from a user stand point but when I was shopping around t-mobile store told me they would copy their firmware onto the phone so I could try their network. You may need to go to a store and talk to someone.
Since Verizon is CDMA and AT&T is GSM, I am not sure a simple firmware update is all that is needed to switch.

That's what I thought but they insisted they could do it. Maybe since there is a Sim slot it's easier on the the 3's.
Years ago you could almost swap sim cards and be good. Idk about it anymore. I think you would have to take all the system files/partitions and the radio and swap them for the carriers. Im sure someone else whos more, but i think it would be unreasonably hard to do.

i believe that some services would work as the phone has some radios in it for the att bands, but you would be better off trading for an att version. swappa has stuff like that all the time to straight trade
Getting service to work and getting 4Glte was no issue. That just required me to manually input APNs that were AT&T specific and presto I have service and all that jazz. My issue is a couple of other small things that really aren't big hut just thst, annoying. That's why I was seeing about the software and firmware being flashed into the device.

[Q] Will my Unlocked Sprint S4 work with a Verizon prepaid SIM?

I have been doing research and searching these forums for a few days now, I'm trying to not be one of those people who ask questions that have been answered. But at this point I'm at the end of the road.
I bought a Sprint Galaxy S4, model SPH-L720.
I unlocked it using this method Sprint Galaxy S IV SPH-L720 SIM Unlock Method
Reverted back to MDC baseband and all that good stuff, just as instructed. It seemed to have went well without a hitch.
My question now is:
I want to buy one of these Verizon 4G Sim Activation Kits from walmart
Is it possible that I can buy one of those, insert the SIM into my unlocked Sprint S4, and have a working phone? I ask because I don't want to drop $50 if it doesn't have a chance of working. The instructions for this say that it will work with a VERIZON S4, but since my SPRINT S4 is unlocked, should that be okay?
I don't know much, but in my reading I found that Sprint and Verizon both use CDMA, not GSM. So I figured I had a better chance of this phone working if I go with Verizon because of this.
I am in the United States.
If you need any other information or screen shots please let me know, thank you for taking the time to help me out!!
EDIT: would it be possible to test it out, if one of my friends has a verizon phone under contract, and I took their SIM and inserted it into my phone?
Try it.
Like the guy above me said. Try it. One way to find out. Personally I don't think it would work. As the whole point of unlocking the sprint Gs4 is to use it on GSM networks. From what I know you have to flash the sprint phone to Verizon. Plus you WONT get LTE on Verizon because the bands are not supported. So you'll only get 3g.

thank you for the info! i'm just learning about all of this, so i don't have a firm grip on everything yet.
in the tutorial i used and linked above, the file I used with Odin was actually titled "S4 Flasher", so I believe I unlocked it and flashed it with this? Again, Im sorry, Ive tried searching and am just looking for verification if Im correct.
I'm not worried about LTE, 3G is fine really. Also, I'm not set on Verizon, I just want my phone to work, doesn't matter what network I'm using. If it would be "safer" or a better bet to get into a GSM prepaid, I will do that instead. I was just under the assumption (incorrectly probably lol) that since sprint is CDMA, that going to another CDMA carrier would be easier.
Cricket, Net10, StraightTalk, and AT&T etc are all available at the store I think if I go GSM
Again thanks for taking the time to help everyone!

I unlocked my sprint GS4 and went to Cricket. And I've been happier than when i was with Sprint (service wise). I have signal in 98% of the places I go to. Which is a HUGE improvement over sprint. And even though this phone only connects to HSPA+ which is capped at 3.5 Mbps its plenty fast for all my daily activities. So I recommend a GSM prepaid.

help!!!!

Overall, in my opinion VZW has best coverage in the big picture. ATT next. That being said, it depends on where you are. I can only speak about Verizon. I've been happy since we got root. You can go up and down firmware easily.
I used USC for several years and as a constant US traveler, they did well by me until I got a data plan. Only 200mb of any data plan can be roaming. That's why I moved to VZW. If you don't leave the home area much, it shouldn't be a problem.

Ya I'm happy with Verizon just need to lower bill an can't do that anymore with verizon..since my cousin works at usc she so fare as gotten us down to 140-155 a month..I don't travel much maybe to Chicago but that's about it an just down sound to the in laws..so I stay close around me I think I got 7hr out is all I go..I live in des moines ia..my main conserbe is rooting I don't see anything on XDA for usc phones..can they be rooted
Yes, I believe the USC phones can be rooted. Do a Google search for whichever phone you are interested in, and you should find information. You should also be able to find it here on XDA. BTW, Chicago is part of USC's home area.

Differences between virgin and sprint samsung galaxy s7?

Ok so I have done some research on this topic, but i still have many questions. I have a virgin mobile s7 which i had to buy directly from them (i do not understand why though) and the phone says it is g930p (as if it were sprint). I know that virgin mobile is powered by the sprint network, but many things are still unclear to me. I would appreciate it if you guys could clear up some things for me. (I live in the USA btw)
1. Are there any differences in root method for the virgin galaxy s7 as compared to the sprint? I have been led to believe that there isn't, but i would appreciate knowing for sure. The reason why i am concerned is because it seems like root causes some problems with LTE and im wondering if the solutions would be the same across providers.
2. If i wanted to I could unlock my phone through virgin and use it with other cdma carriers right? For example, could i switch to sprint network?
3. Are there any other differences between sprint and virgin mobile galaxy s7's besides that they use different networks?
4. Would other guides such as gaining hotspot without root work on my virgin mobile galaxy s7?
5. If you have some spare time, I would appreciate a post that outlines all of the notable differences between a sprint galaxy s7 and a virgin mobile galaxy s7.
Thanks in advance!
Is something wrong?
It has been about two weeks since i made this post, and there has been no response. Is this typical of this website, (it is my first post so i do not know) or is there something about my question that is driving people off?

No difference in the phones. They are the exact same physical models. The root method should be the same, but you will have to do the option for hands free activation.
You won't be able to use it on sprint postpaid unless you find someone who is willing to switch it in the database...could be hard to do.
Hotspot guides will work, but you will have to flash the U firmware if you have a newer firmware.
Hope this helps.
Thanks

I appreciate the reply a lot. These things may be intuitive, but this is only my second time rooting a phone so i wanted to be sure i understood it correctly. Now i can start rooting with peace of mind. Thanks Again!
