[Q] Soft Bricked after Flashing Back - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After I updated my Verizon Galaxy S5 to Lollipop, I tried to flash a lower version official .tar through Odin, and got stuck in a bootloop I can still flash .tars through Odin, but I cannot actually use my phone. How do I get my phone working again? Can I?

Can you be more specific? What TAR did you flash? Did you flash an older corresponding kernel?
What is your ultimate goal?

Thanks

I figured out how to restore on my own. Turns out I can only restore to NCG. I fixed my own problem. Thanks for helping though!
To any users who visit this form in the future, you can only flash back to NCG after updating to OTA Stock Lollipop.

This is not true. You can restore back to whatever version you want. If you get stuck in a bootloop just hold down the home, volume down and power buttons for about 10 seconds and the phone will boot in to a maintenance menu. From there select factory data reset with the volume down key and then press the home button to execute the option. It should boot normally after that. To avoid this just enter the stock recovery after flashing the tar in Odin and factory data reset from there.

I think I know what you did

If you downgraded the kernal it won't let you so you have to go back to a lower verison of android or flash the lollipop kernel

Same happened to me when i used mobile Odin. The bootloader wasn't updated.
Did you use Odin 1.85? And did you tick the option update new bootloader? If not do that.
If did that then wipe cache and data reset from recovery.

yeah i used the wrong version of odin. i used 1.85 now its working, but i didnt select update bootloader, how do i know if it updated the bootloader?
You know if the phone is up and running. Kitkat can't boot without new bootloader. So if the phone is working there is no issues.

just FYI,
if you want to flash TW custom ROM, the best you use is Chenglu CWM. So far I seldom see user complain got problem during flashing with this CWM.
TWRP, some users got problem, some are not.

Boot into the stock recovery and do a factory reset then try using Odin again.

I used Odin to install NC4, now when it restarts it sits at the Note 3 screen that says custom, forever. Is there a fix for this?

Boot into the stock recovery by holding down Volume Up, Home and Power then do a factory reset, it may work.
You may have a corrupted file.

Did you clear everything but the microsd card?
I fixed it already all you have to do is flash the stock firmware on odin but the stock fw from before it happened on pda and just in case flash the pit for the model and it should be fixed

Bricked during updating

I was performing the Lillipop update and accidentally restored the system and cache partitions after flashing the new ROM. I now am in a Bricked position where I cannot get past the black & white Samsunug Custom screen. I have tried to ODIN NCG & NK2 with no avail. If any one can point me in the right direction to at least get access to using my phone again, that would be awesome. Thanks.

You would need the NK2 ROM and Kernel, and both would have to be flashed via Odin.

OK, thanks. I have the kernel. What about the ROM? That is Zip file, how is that flashed in ODIN? Im only used to doing them in safe strap via the SD card.

@kprice8, do you know if there is a way to then restore data either after re-installing the NK2 firmware, Rom or Lillipop? When i tried with NK2 SafeStrap said it worked, but it hangs on Red Verizon logo. When I restored Data in Lollipop, it says it failed.

bootlooped my phone or something

i was trying to switch from 5.0 lollipop to 4.4.4 ricks rom but i think i went straight there even though i flashed the nk2 kernel because my basebend was still OC4 so i attempted to fix it by flashing the nk2 firmware when safestrap came up i created a rom slot 1 then i wiped everything hit the reboot into download button and reflashed the nk2 firmware again and now my phone is stuck on the screen that says samsung galaxy s5 custom (with the lock right above it) and below that powered by android and when i try to go into download mode it sends me to boot maitnence and i can only pick reboot normally factory reset and reboot in safe mode and none of them help or allow me to get back into download mode and the recovery menu wont come up either (volume up home and power button) any help is greatly appreciated
edit: i am able to get into download mode by goin into the maintence screen and doing the volume up and power button first then press and hold the home button but no matter what i flash it seems to be stuck at the bootloop (if thats what its even called its more of a screen loop lol)

Try starting over. Go here and down to notes #4. Flash the NCG full Odin tar and re-root. Start from scratch.

If you are rooted and flash the firmware from the link he provided, you should boot up to where you can go into safestrap recovery (before your phone boots all the way up). You then flash his ROM in safestrap and you should be good.
Use the stock slot.
i just flashed the regular ncg stock kernal and it didnt do anything it put my on the samsung galaxy s5 custom screen with recovery booting in blue at the top ill try flashing the stock nk2 one and then reflashing the NCG one

You need to flash the NCG full Odin tar, not just the kernel. Then root your phone again.

See my post #2. Flash that full Odin tar. You will be on 4.4.2 with no root. Re-root your phone. (Towelroot, install SuperSU from play store, update the binaries, reboot phone, install busybox and install safestrap. Then you Odin the NK2 firmware from RicksRom post. Before your phone boots all the way up, hit the safestrap recovery button. From there you do a full wipe, then install RicksRom.

thanks for your response... holding the up-volume and power only results with the same "not authorized" screen.. also adb does not list it as a device but odin does add it..

Just flash the stock rom in Odin and perform a factory wipe before booting the stock rom for the first time.

You can use Odin to flash twrp and root with an unlocked bootloader.
Twrp: https://dl.twrp.me/jflteatt/
Flash SuperSU from twrp: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/stable-2016-09-01supersu-v2-78-release-t3452703

Towel root works with the MDL bootloader for rooting. Can't tell you how to get TWRP, I use CWM on my at&t S4.

i just used the CASUAL app i linked earlier.. it worked to get root and installed twrp..
now i'm looking for a decent rom to install.. all the ones i used to use aren't supported any longer..
I hear Thor ROM and Golden eye ROM are nice and fast TW roms. For non touch wiz there is probably an CM or AOSP rom out there somewhere.
