How to delete 100k+ texts - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I am in a tough one here.
I have over 100k+ texts in different threads. My text messaging app is starting to get really slow.
I try to delete these using the app but it just says "deleting" and the whole app freezes. I've cleared data and cache and still no fix. I believe I need to manually delete these texts somehow.
Anyone have any idea?

You just have to wait for it to delete them. It can't delete them instantly.
If your phone is rooted, you might try to wipe the sms/mms xml data using Titanium Backup. That's where the messages are and it's this you want to backup whenever you want to backup your messages.
You can recognize it by it's name in yellow letters. But this may yield the same freeze result.

Hey, thanks for the reply
How can I use titanium backup to delete the xml files? I can't find them listed.
Also, let me add that I use Go SMS pro as my default SMS app
Thanks

You should note that this deletes all text messages in your phone.
The thing you are looking for is called "Messages (SMS & MMS)". The name is written in yellow. Also has the Titanium Backup icon next to it.
The apps are categorized in alphabetical order. So it will be under M

Interesting Messaging Problem

Firstly, I did a search and this issue was briefly touched on, but no resolve was given. I receive a new text message, I go into my inbox it says 0 items 1 new. This has been going on for a week. Now I have missed 11 text messages. My inbox and today screen say 0 items 11new. Any way to find these messages and to repair so this does not continue?
Thanks
Help I can't retrieve my text messages... now there is 13.
nerdgurl, kindly send a list of all 3rd party programs installed.
Here is the list:
Total Commander, Sygic Mobile Contacts, Pocket Max PhoneAlarm,
AE Button Plus, SetAsRingTone, ME PhonePlus, SPB PocketPlus, Sprite Backup.
It was working fine until last week, when I did a full restore, but I do have the newest Sprite Backup so there should have been no conflicts, but I don't know.
Is there any way to retreive them with another messaging software?
Thank you so much, I'm getting desperate
Are you going to the correct inbox? There are several inboxes: MMS, Outlook E-Mail, SMS...
Restoring backups screws up inboxes. Sprite's the closest thing to a proper backup app but still not perfect.
Yes, I'm going to the correct inbox, as for Sprite perhaps I am unable to save my old messages but I can't even receive new ones. If I knew how to do a screen capture, I would post a picture of this bizzare behavior.

Nah, I would suggest SPb Clone, lotsa issues with Sprite :>
Is there any remedy for this, to retrieve my older messages or to stop this from occuring with new incoming messages?

There is a tool to backup messages. I have not yet tried it myself. I'm just going to post a link to it since after install you need to put in a code at their website in order for software to be able to run. Hope it helps.
http://pdafresh.freeweb.hu/communications/sms/app_smsbackup.htm (Backs up only messages)
Developer site: http://www.zedsoft.net/smsbackup/
http://pdafresh.freeweb.hu/communications/sms/app_allexport.htm (Exports messages AND Outlook data)
UPDATE: Export function works fine. Restore will test after a HR. Backup worx.
Developer site: http://www.zedsoft.net/allexport/
Hope it worx 4 u
OH I messed it up good! It says Message Backup successfull (0 Messages), then I tried to restore the messages and it would state: Message restore successfull (0 Messages). What have I done?
Nerdgurl,
Your sms database seems to be corrupt. Use the attached tool to delete all mail/sms databases. Dont forget to backup since it destroys all SMS, mail & account info. I had a similar prob & resolved.
Cheers...
You can try the soft from Jeyo to see, if it can salvage your messages. But when all is said and done, you will HAVE to do a hard reset, to get things running again. With a bit of luck you can reinstall everything but the messages, otherwise a full reinstall is needed.
Also, you may wanna try visiting www.Sunnysoft.cz for Backup Manager. A very nice alternative to Sprite, which has way too many unsolved bugs. I fully agree with dmmh on that...

SMS Backup and Restore.

Some of you may have heard of this. This is for those looking for a backups solution for their SMS messages. It does not work with MMS.
I did not make this.
http://android.riteshsahu.com/apps/sms-backup-restore
For people who wipe and flash ROMs as often as I do, this is a perfect solution for saving those text messages.
Post up alternate methods if you have any.
Please donate to this guy. He can't put up a paid version because he lives in Australia.
+1
I've been using this for a few days now and have come to rely on it. Very easy to use, although I was not aware it wouldn't back up MMS messages.
Titanium is much better. Will backup SMS/MMS storage file in about 1-2 seconds and restore in the same amount of time.
could have swore i saw another program called mms backup on appbrain.
and where in titanium does it have the option for sms and/or mms backup? cant seem to locate it.

I've been using Titanium for a while now too, but didn't know it backed up SMS! Can you direct me to the element where the SMS/MMS stuff is stored?
Edit: Nevermind, I found them in the backup list. I had not noticed them before. It also backs up bookmarks and (appears to) your Sense config!

I have seen that, and others, in the Market.
Because there are many to choose from, I guess what I should have asked is if anyone has used and likes any one in particular.
sms backup by michele valentini works great.
I was curious about this too so I tried out SMS backup & restore by Ritesh Sahu just now.
I was able to make a complete copy of all of my messages (about 200 texts) in a xml file stored on my SD card. I then deleted the messages off of my phone and tried restoring using the backup. Everything seems to be back in the original place.
One thing that was nice was the ability to view the texts from the backup without having to restore them. This might be useful to have a copy of the text somewhere but not on the phone itself.
I haven't extensively used the app but first go through is positive, and there are many thousands of ratings on the marketplace for the app.

How to back up all text messages?

Is it possible I dont want to loose my txt messages if I try and flash or update.
I use a app called back up to Gmail. Works great. Check it out and you will not have to worry about your text messages after a flash.
SMS Backup +
It's in the market, best app ever for this purpose.
Titanium Backup can handle this, as well as pretty much any backup situation you can think of.

[sms/mms/apn] Dialer Storage 2.2
Download from market. Run BATCH, to back up all apps. If you want data as well such as sms, select back up data as well. After you flash, redownload Titanium if necessary, select Batch & restore data & or apps.

I like mybackup root just do backup data then choose sms
The pro with SMS Backup + is that it creates a folder within gmail like your inbox for only your text messages... you do not need to backup, it just does it for you in the background... also nice because you can search all your messages a lot easier from the browser.
The other methods work, just not nearly as well in my opinion.
It's been a long time since I used SMS Backup +. It didn't have the ability to save MMS back when I used it. Good stuff.

Thanks for mentioning this. I was using SMS Backup and Restore but it only does it locally.

[Q] Help please: Titanium Backup making itself the default messaging app

Sometimes Titanium Backup makes itself my default message app. Now, anyone with familiarity with TiBu should know that it is not a messaging app. It can't send them or receive them, as far as I can tell.
When it is the default and someone texts me, the text seems to never arrive at my phone. In fact, the only way that I know TiBu has become the default is when someone asks why I'm ignoring their texts and I look at the default apps to find TiBu as my messenger.
Is there a reason why this should be happening? Is there a reason why TiBu should even be an option for default messaging apps? I've attached a pic to prove I'm not crazy. Hopefully someone out there has seen this and has an answer? I'm tempted to uninstall TiBu until I need it, reinstalling every time I need to backup apps and then uninstall it again. That just seems like an avoidable hassle.

It shows up as an option for me as well but it isn't selected as my default.
Inside titanium there is a titanium messages app that is called "Messages (SMS & MMS) com.keramidas.virtual.xml_messages
You can't delete it since it is a part of titanium. Maybe this is the way it backs up the messages. Our phones see that as a possible messaging app.
It's not always my default, it just steals it every so often. A little frustrating, and I can't google for the answer because all i get are pages telling me how to freeze the default messaging app with TiBu.

If I can't delete it, can I freeze it? I'm just wondering why my default changes to TiBu for no reason. I may have to go the messy route of deleting/reinstalling whenever I need it.

There doesn't seem to be an option to uninstall or freeze.
The behavior that I have seen is that TiBu sets itself as the default messaging app when performing restores of SMS messages.
Is it possible that you have some scheduled TiBu jobs running?

The only schedule I have is to "Backup new user+system apps & newer versions". It's not enabled and has never run. I'll delete it, just in case it's giving me that issue, and watch for the problem to reappear.
