Lollipop update (GS5) - Note Edge General

My wife got the update on her GS5 (Verizon) and it is sooo awesome. Everything seems faster, better... I hope it doesn't take a long time for us to get it...

Did you note a drop in size of the ROM and RAM used? If yes, by how much?

[Q] 910G Variant Lollipop Firmware

Hello XDA,
I have the 910G variant and I've been waiting for the release OTA or via Kies since the release began but bubkiss.
Sammy mobile literally has dozens of variant firmware and theres plenty of threads on here about cross flashing X to Y or what have you but not a single mention (according to a fair amount of searching) on whether any of the existing ROMs work for the G or whether its going to be released etc.
My question is, does anyone know of any of the variant versions that WOULD/SHOULD work with the 910G or if the firmware is out there and I'm just an idiot?
If someone can recommend a ROM to try within reasonable margins I'll definitely give it a shot and be a guinea pig.
Thanks in advance.

F ROM's will work on our G device with a custom kernel like AEL - but we need the bootloader and modems for our G model first, which we cant do without samsungs release.

Find me this question anywhere else on the forum and I'll take it down.
I've been a member a LOT longer then you, I just never post.
From my understanding our modem and bootloader is different from the n910f and therefore we can't flash it on our n910g untill someone finds a custom kernel or sammy releases it. Sucks i know, I'm waiting for lollipop since it was mentioned by Google

It was literally the main reason I bought this phone over the Nexus 6, I had a Note 3 and flashed the early Lollipop leak and that was such an incredible leap in quality I felt the lollipop for the note 4 would make it the best phone on the market by a long shot, especially given the 4.4.4 firmware was already so much better then the usually touchwiz fair.
Oh well, patience is a virtue, if only I could buy it on ebay.
Yep we just gotta wait, sucks but it's android and not ios and since we all love android we have no choice but to wait. The only good thing about ios if you get updates fast, but that's not good enough for me to use that horrible os.

Agreed.
I handle iPhones at work a lot and I have to admit the hardware is gorgeous and Android hasn't totally outdone the iPhone 6 yet in hardware, but the software, the most important part is far and away much better.
Every time I pick up an IP6 and think "man this sure is sexy...maybe the software is better now" I try to navigate through menus and end up playing the "wheres the back button now!" game and I hate it.
I like the design of the iP6, but i absolutely hate the OS with so much hatred lol. I would never go back to iOs. If only you could install android on a ip6...
I'm officially starting to get pissed off enough to consider returning the phone, the rep guaranteed me the Lollipop update would be out for my variant the week it released for all others.
Clearly thats not true.
What is taking so long to release?
Let's hope it'll be out asap.

Ok I have gotten tired of waiting and the battery life on my Note 4 has almost halved since I got it about 2 months ago, I'm going to try to flash the 910F version onto my device, I'm downloading it atm can anyone tell me where I can find spec sheets or something for the various models as I'm not too sure if the F is for the Snapdragon version or not.

first of all, relax and take a deep breath.
Lollipop for the N910F is NOT gonna work on G since you don't have the correct bootloader and modem.
so i'm sorry, but you'll have to wait for Lollipop release for the G.
and even though the F roms work on G with kitkat...it still needed a different kernel, and that has to come from sources...that samsung has to release...which takes a looooong time
so sure, you can look at spec sheets and see that F is basically the same as G, but it still won't help boot the rom.
sorry :good:
Im interested to see how he went with this...

Another week no update... I am guessing something is seriously wrong with the update. Australian version Note 4 Edge received the update so i can't think what else would be stopping it. I hope they decide to bump us to 5.1 instead of going gradually...

To everyone in the thread waiting, Sammobile reported yesterday that 910g is getting lollipop in India as of yesterday so the ROM should be up on their firmware section soon hopefully.

+1 Man, its been like half a yr now or more. Something is taking so bloody long. I dont believe the S'Pen function on the Note4 and Lollipop is the culprit hey? Theres no other explanation. Other phones get 5.0. the S5 got it. Note 3 too. WHERE IS it for sm-n910G ???

What's more important Specs or On time Software updates?

I wanna buy the S6 or S6 EDGE. I currently have a Note Edge. But I was thinking the NExus line get's updated on time but they don't have that super mega specs that Samsung offers or other OEM's at the moment. So I wanna hear your opinion. Is't possible for Google to make a coding simpler and install-able accross platforms? Watching my Note Edge stuck on 5.0.1 and wishing for a miracle it will be updated someday to 5.1 lol.
definitely specs for me.
Specs all the way. I could care less about how long a manufacturer takes to release an update. That's what XDA is for. As long as the device can be rooted and the bootloader is unlocked/unlockable. Now if I'm on a carrier like AT&T or Verizon that locks there phones down like no tomorrow then I would have a harder time making that decision. But other than that my thinking is software can be replaced, the hardware can't.
I know, but having root unlocked boot loader doesn't always mean that new on time updates reaches our device's. We have to wait for devs to support it. Like my Note Edge....the XDA forum for it is kinda life less. Lol. I know my Note Edge is better in Specs than Nexus 6, but it doesn't have the latest software update/bug fixes, etc. It kinda sucks.
Software updates, for sure. Specs only get you so far until you're at the "My phone can do pretty much everything fine", which let's be honest here, is the point the Nexus 5 is still at. But take away any HINT of a software update, and you'll still be running Lollipop 2 years down the road, or have the same bugs you had at release. And you KNOW how buggy these are at release.
Specs. I can't think of an instance where the update made me think the phone was majorly improved by an update. And the OS version updates require me to factory reset the phone to get rid of performance issues

T-Mobile 5.0 Update Rush

Hey guys are we really rushing lollipop on T-mobile. With all these US carriers talking about bugs in the latest version why would we even want it right now. 5.0 No 5.1 YES. I have a great running 5.0 rom running now but yes the battery isn't that great, yes it's gets hot, yes it takes longer to boot, yes my LTE is spotty at times, yes my WiFi isn't as strong at kit Kat. Am I alone on this one? Read the below article. The U.S. carriers isn't the only ones with the problem.

for me, I'm in no rush. unless lollipop fixes this extremely laggy phone I can care less. this phone, as powerful as the specs say it is, is a slow, laggy, bad camera POS. I'm eligible for jump on 9/25 and it cannot come soon enough. I had a Moto X before this, and I was happy with it. the Note 4 is full of disappointment. I don't see how all of the early reviews were so positive for it, the moto x had embarrassing specs but performed perfect, the camera wasn't good but I preferred it over this one, at least it opened and focused quickly.
I still wouldnt call it a "rush" though when its the slowest to market.
Most of these articles make me like tmo even more. I can wait for greatness. I think sprint use to watch xda closely because some how after every update leak that had problems and xda devs fixed them sprint would release a newer update with those problems gone lol gotta love xda

Flash Dynamic Pop or Dynamic Kat and it'll change your mind about the phone.
I have been using the unmodified port of SM-N910W8 Lollipop firmware (http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...t-unmodified-port-sm-n910w8-lollipop-t3072920) for a while now and it has made my phone better. That said i rather wait for the tmo version without bugs instead of right now and render my phone unusable. Also there are many 5.0 roms already out which are infinite better than anything tmo can ever gives us .

I agree. Samsung should not push lollipop to anyphones unless google irons out all the bugs. Right now 5.0.1 or 5.0.2 is out for most. But why not wait for stable OS from google as nexus users will be the testers for us.
Also samsung needs to do lot of testing on stable OS from google because of TW skin

To be fair it's not like Apple and Microsoft put out perfect OS's right out of the box. Granted Apple is a different model but software is software, at some point the decision has to be made to release, bugs and all.
I have become so used to cm12 and now 12.1 and very happy that honestly dont see myself bothering with the official when ever its released
I like orange peanuts. ....oh and I'm loving the modified Canadian Lollipop port!

I spoke with my friend who works for TMO he told me that they had been testing show failed it has reported back to Samsung takes little longer. He thinks it will release out in late summer. I am disappointed. I wish I had kept note 3 (N900T)

Is Bluetooth working on it? 12.1 I mean also how's the battery. .last I tried it sucked bad
I agree with a lot of what was said here, but if you're on XDA, why not root and flash a custom ROM if you're unhappy with your phone? I've tried at least 4 ROMs for the Note 4 (and many more with the Note 3) and have found at least a couple are almost perfect and most have been far superior to stock in every way. And I'm just talking about normal performance; with root you also have the ability to add and subtract apps and features and theme your device and truly make it yours. With a custom ROM and all the options and performance root brings, we really won't need to update for years from the current OS. But if Samsung would lighten up TouchWiz, the updates would come faster.

Android "M" Will we get it?

I'd be very surprised if we don't get Android "M" given the age of our device. Let's hope Samsung work on this and update us soon! I'd like to think we'd get it reasonably quickly once released! (PS; my device only got 5.1 today!)

It is still just a developer preview for the Nexus devices. I am guessing we might only get it on q4.... Anyway how did you get 5.1 on your S6 Edge? You get it officially or flash the tmobile one?

Well TBH I'm only guessing it's the 5.1 update as I'm below 20% battery and won't update until I'm charged, and it's 171.99 MB. I bet I'm wrong though as I've had a few bevvies! Anyway, I'm craving the update as battery life could be a little better!

It's not the 5.1 update, probably just the small patch some of the carriers have been pushing out. Most are around that size. 5.1 will be a large update.
I'm sure we'll get M as M will be officially released before the S7 is (assuming they'll call it the S7). However, I'm sure it'll still look like it does now and not like how M should.
You're all right, it was not 5.1 but just the patch. Had a few beers inside me and got my hopes up there for just a second! Anyway the phone feels a little snappier after the update. Google Play Services still dominating the battery stats list though. Hopefully the 5.1 update will address this.

Conversation with Moto Mobility Regarding LP

Now that David Schuster is gone from Moto, I decided to contact Customer service... Don't think the person really knows.
Alessandro Chavez (Listening)
Alessandro Chavez: Hi, my name is Alessandro Chavez. How may I help you?
Alessandro Chavez: Good morning! Who do I have the pleasure of chatting with?
Scott Wilson: Greetings,
Alessandro Chavez: Hi
Scott Wilson: Now that David Schuster is laid off from Moto, How do we find out if we are ever going to receive Lollipop or other updates?
Scott Wilson: Many that have 2013 Droids are in the Dark. Vrizon tells us nothing, and we are frustrated
Alessandro Chavez: Ok, well to be honest all the Phones around the world will receive the update
Alessandro Chavez: Yes is understandable
Scott Wilson: from 2013 and up?
Scott Wilson: Are you saying that Verizon is still going to upgrade Lollipop for the 2013 Droids on Verizon?
Alessandro Chavez: Well what version of Droid you have?
Scott Wilson: Droid Maxx
Alessandro Chavez: Ok thanks, do you remember what was the original software?
Scott Wilson: Kitkat
Alessandro Chavez: Ok, so yes the phone will receive it, but it is randomly
Alessandro Chavez: We can't determine when you are going to receive it

This is no surprise. Motorola can't tell you because it isn't up to them. The ball is in Verizon's court and has been for a long time. I really doubt my Droid Maxx will ever get another major version update. On the other hand I'm finding it works very well for me as it is. I have a Samsung tablet that got updated from 4.4.2 to 5.02 and generally speaking that was a big "so what's the big deal" moment. In the case of my Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 it did seem a little smoother and a little snappier. On the other hand I did a factory reset after getting the update...and all devices feel snappier after a reset, right?
Anyway if you want to know about updates ask Verizon....where you will get a blank stare. For me, I don't particularly care if I get an update.
Someone actually wants Lollipop on an Ultra/MAXX/Mini? Really? Do they understand how badly it'll screw up our devices in doing so? KitKat is mature, stable, and it just works - Lollipop brings nothing to the party at this point in the Android game, so to speak.
Hell, I was considering getting a new device recently but then I realized all the new devices come with Lollipop and there's just no KitKat to work with anymore so it looks like I'll just keep buying old used devices that run KitKat and stick with 'em.
</personal_opinion_for_the_record>
I've been running LP 5.1.1 for the past month and is amazed at how it renewed my phone. No wonder Motorola is not pushing hard to get LP released, it'll mean less upgrades to their new models. My Maxx is a beast right now. The interface is silky smooth, scrolling through apps that used to choke on itself is no longer the case. Tapatalk for example used to be choppy as all hell, now it is like the phone is reading my mind. Overall, the phone is much snappier. Battery life is at least equal to the best I've ever had running on KitKat, probably better actually. With everything enabled and running on radio the whole day is no big deal. With the screen off, it is draining at about 1% per hour. Yeah, KitKat is just bad memory for me at this point. Its was ugly, and was laboring the phone. The chains have been released! Lol. Exodus 5.1.1 on the Maxx baby!

Did you do a factory reset or clean install in conjunction with 5.1.1? On a device that's been in use for a while I've found a reset in and of itself seems to make it work like a new phone. On my Samsung tablet I got an update to 5.02 and didn't really notice any performance improvement. Then I did a factory reset and it felt really fast...but it may have felt just as fast had I done a factory reset on 4.4.
No factory reset, but going from 4.4.4 to 5.1, I had to delete the systems folder. Kept data untouched and had all my apps still installed. Been doing dirty flashes since while updating the Exodus nightly. The biggest difference between 4.4.4 and 5.1.1 is how much smoother the LP UI is. It is like upgrading the graphics card in a computer. Scrolling is night and day as I've said, I use Crapatalk a lot and is the most active app on my phone and in LP, it is Tapatalk again. Scrolling is buttery smooth and that's not even exaggerating. Everything is snappier. When I say it is a new phone, I mean it. My wife has the OG Moto X and I still have a Moto X DE, both unlocked anf still running 4.4.4 so I've done plenty of comparison. KitKat is literally sh1t compared to Exodus 5.1.1.
