You will receive the official update, and you will be able to update it via OTA as long as you have the stock kernel and recovery. So if you have a custom kernel and/or recovery, reflash the stock ones. Otherwise, you can always download a modified OTA from XDA which will work on a modified system.
So my S5 updated last night. Root checker says not rooted. Xposed installer isn't supported anymore. How can I get back to rooted? Any threads out there yet?
Only update received was part one to prepare for lollipop. Second update will not install. I think I have to unroot back to original then root again. Where can I find the thread for that.

I updated to OA8 and need to root. Anything out there to walk me through this? Tried to flash NK2 but got stuck in boot loop. 3 attempts.

Help please
To get the ota update you need to return your device to stock. I googled i337Z firmware and found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448794
If it updates to 4.4.2 there currently is not a root method so if you need root you'll have problems.
Edit, oh, backup everything first as it'll delete everything
Help
Up, i need 4.3 android on i337z mh1, not stock update
Well the 4.4.2 update is available but I'm not going to update because it might loose root

You can try supersu's survival mode or hope that towel root works.

I can confirm that towel root works on the I337Z with 4.4.2, build TUUBNE2. However, Safestrap doesn't seem to work. Also, at least for the time being, I don't see any way of unlocking the bootloader with 4.4, so you may want to try to unlock the bootloader before upgrading to 4.4, if that's of interest to you.
agree I rooted a store demo with towel root and it worked hahaha , but I haven't tried safestap on a phone running kitkat , mine is running the intika rom now and I'm not planing to update for now
One thing that is a bit concerning to me, is that towel root requires internet access to function.. it makes me wonder why.
For the most part, I'm ok with the stock (rooted) rom, as I can disable/cleanup most of what I need to. The only thing I haven't been able to fix is the missing hotspot option - not sure how to get this option to show up.
just upgraded from 4.3 official to 4.4 official...the update removed root..HOW DO I GET IT BACK? i don't want to wipe & iv tried Kingo root. what do i need to do!
There is no way currently to root the official update. That is why Beans and others said to wait on taking the official update until the devs looked at it.

Hi,
I had to send in my S4 (rooted with Loki) to Samsung to replace the screen. I'm assuming they restored to factory default and then flashed to latest 4.4.2. Is it possible to odin back to an earlier Android version and root my phone again or am I stuck with stock now?

You can't Odin back but you can root. Do you know what version of 4.4.2 you're on, nb1, nc1, or nl1?

possibly dumb question, but can I install custom recoveries with after towelroot exploit?
edit: found out answer to my own questions. Sucks that Samsung updated my phone and now I'm stuck with safestrap.

You can only install safestrap as the recovery. You'll be able to flash touch wiz based roms and a couple of Google play addition. See in the general forum, index all things at&t....

For those rooted with Loki+Motochopper I would suggest buying your own NEW screen and replacing then. Better than being locked down tight and not have full control of your own personal device. Sorry to hear about being updated... But your post made me decide what I would do if/when my screen goes out or glass breaks

I sent mine to a phone repair website and they did some JTAG magic stuff and downgraded mine to 4.2, which is what it came with when I got it. I don't recall the website, but if you search around I'm sure you'll find something. It cost about $50.

I recently rooted my Galaxy S4 using the Towel Root method. but a week ago or so while driving ATT forced an update and updated to the new version. The problem is I do not have Root active, but I can't use certain apps due to getting a message saying that they can't be used on a Rooted device. I am not sure how to remove this odd state I am in. Has anyone had this issue and know how to remove it?
Device: Samsung Galaxy S4
Carrier: AT&T
Model: SAMSUNG-SGH-I337
Android Version 4.4.2

What is it that you really want - to regain root or to unroot?
1. To regain root - read the root section of All Things AT&T thread
2. To unroot
a. Without losing data -- I am not sure exactly how to do this
One way would be to re-root and then unroot using the superSu app.
b. With losing data -- Oding NB1 stock and update to latest. Follow Return to Stock
I would like to have it go back to unrooted status. I was hoping for a data safe method. But at this point whichever will work. I am assuming i'll have to root, then unroot. But I didnt know if this causes problem as apps believe it to be rooted but the system says I am not.
I'm having the same dilemma
I rooted my s4 using towelroot. Later att forced an update to 4.4.2 which i thought wouldn't work because it was tooted. But it actually did work and updated. Now the phone is not rooted but it seems that there are some files that are still somewhere that pretty much makes it be partially rooted but with not real root access. Now that the next update is being forced by att for version 4.4.4 it doesn't work. It stores installing at 27% with a failed message. I uninstalled towel root and super user but with no success. I whiped the partition and no success. I did a factory reset which i thought it would work and remove the files that maked look rooted and no success. What should i do exactly to unroot it?

You would have to Odin the nb1 tar file, it's the only version that exists. Then ota to 4.4.4, nj4. Any version of Odin works. It will wipe your device and you'll have to start over setting it up.

I unfroze sdm. Received update and applied it. It just installs and errors.
I was hoping it would just wipe my root and install 5.0
Any suggestions?
Thank you.
To update you need to flash a stock tar using Odin, which would include the stock ROM and stock firmware, then update from that, but you would lose root. Or you could wait for someone to upload the firmware and ROM.
