I cracked my aria screen pretty much right after I got it, Managed to get my hands on a new digitizer and replaced it. I found a quick walkthrough on Android forums. It helped but had a few points that could have been more succinct.
Posting here in case anyone needs.
Took me about an 1hr 30min the first time trying to figure it out on my own.
My additional comments are indicated by **.
I put some addendums to @Jcawesome's steps...
1. Remove backcover
2. Remove Battery, sim chip, and memory card
3. Unscrew the top two screws (meaning the end farthest from the memory card.)
4. Using a flat plastic wedge, (I used the one that came from my ebay order, it looks like the blue tool in this pic )
5. Carefully pull off the parts at the top being very cautious not to break anything. (Do not pull the circuit board out, only lift the end closest to the edge of the phone)
** there are two pieces to pull off....with the phone laying flat (screen down and the top facing away from you) a larger yellow piece with an attached back speaker comes out towards you. a second piece pulls up (north as if on a map)... but becareful because there is a bunch of tape and tackiness all throughout this thing (literally I felt it was held together by tape). I actually pulled off the grill on front as well.
** the circuit board is kept attached near the top right. the element that is the power button snaps off. (there are two little dots just to the right of the speaker with what looks like blackish tape that connects to the circuit board... you can pop this off.
With that off, I could lift the circuit board about 30 degrees or so... I wasn't comfortable pulling it back any farther than that.
I did step 5 AFTER I got the screen off.
6. Using the flat plastic wedge again, push the wedge tool between the phone and the broken screen. (It will feel like you are breaking it but it is fine, it is held on by a sticky paste that will slowly give way)
** careful on this part... especially difficult depending on how your screen is cracked. but it is just a bunch of sticky tape that is keeping it attached.... I had to peel away the goo and connection near the top sensitive areas as my ear piece speaker came off with the goo.
7. Disconnect the connecter from the old digitizer to the new one and remove the old digitizer.
**I used a small little tweezer and sneaked it in underneath the circuit board to pull the digitizer connection out.... a little difficult to push back in, but just took some patience.
8. Being careful not to put fingerprints on any exposed surface of either the phone lcd or the replace screen, place the new digitizer in the exact spot of the old one.
** have some lint free microfiber cloth handy and perhaps some screen cleaner.... I spent about 15 minutes cleaning the lcd screen before laying the replacement digitizer back on.
I actually did step 9 before step 8.
9. Connect the connecter from the new digitizer to the board, be careful not to pull the circuit board out and do not scratch the board.
10. You may want to use some glue to hold the new screen on, hopefully this will not happen again. My phone still had enough of the sticky paste left to hold the new screen fine.
** I agree... the first time you replace it will be fine.... afterwards tho, I can see it running out of tackiness.....
11. Put the phone back together in reverse order.
12. Turn it one and everything should be working again.
** in a nut shell
1) take out two screws
2) detach two yellow shell pieces
3) unhook a latch that is the power button
4) pry off the screen
5) lift the circuit board approx 30 degrees.
6) detach digitizer connection from underneath using tweezer
7) replace digitizer connection, return circuit board flat
8)position digitizer and press down to adhere
9)replace two plastic yellow shell pieces
10) screw it back together
done.
let me know if you have any questions.=)
enjoy your "brand" new aria.
dude,, this is a PITA,, I did,, was about 1hour, the hardest part,, is to not put the fingers on the LCD and cleaning the new screen..... dust particles everywhere... and at the end still got one...
Sorry eortizr, If I made it seem easier than it was. I spent quite a while cleaning the lcd screen when I replaced the digitizer... I don't think it's possible to change the digitizer without getting fingerprints on it though. But with some diligence and working in a clean area, I was able to keep all dust and finger prints out of the final product.
My wife dropped hers. Cracked up pretty good but still functional. Think I might just go ahead and pay the $100 and have someone who does it for a living do it.
I can totally see me trying DIY concentrating real hard dripping sweat all over it and ruining the MB. LOL
Replaced the screen today. Half way in I thought I definitely bit off more than I could chew. I got it done though. A couple of things I learned:
The digitizer unplugs away from you or toward the screen with the phone laying flat (screen down and the top facing away from you). I kept thinking i had to unplug it by pulling it north, toward the top of the phone.
I dropped and threw away both the front speaker and the very small rubber piece that covers the proximity sensor so... when I turned the phone on everything looked good, until I answered my phone. The screen went blank and I couldn't hear anything. I found the speaker and the proximity sensor cover and replaced them.
I would do it again, its worth saving $50 or so.
Thanks for the tutorial dreamflux.
I found the whole kit including the adhesive here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180643624141

I found a replacement digitizer from tmart dot com for $55, free shipping. Just search Aria on their site, you'll find it. Sorry, I can't seem to post links yet.
What was peculiar, was that it has only the HTC logo in the center, and no ATT logo. Looks nice and clean. They included plastic separator tools and torx drivers, though nothing in this phone uses torx. The site is a little shady, and while their headquartered in Hong Kong, it shipped from Brooklyn NY about 5 days after purchase, priority mail. The swap wasn't bad, but my only complaint is that the lights from the softkeys seem to shine up onto the screen, but you get used to it. It's probably because I didn't transfer the stickers over on the bottom of the digitizer.
Thanks for the directions ... I just replaced my digitizer. I had 2 major problems: 1) my power button doesn't work any longer (I'm going to take it apart and try to put it back together and see if that fixes it), and 2) you HAVE to use BLACK sticky stuff to seat the bottom of the digitizer - I used the clear stuff that came with the digitizer, and now I have tons of light bleeding into the LCD from the button backlights. I'm not sure what to do about the bleed ... I guess I'll have to tear it down again and put black stuff in ... damn.
That's the deal with that excess backlighting! I thought it was just a matter of the screen being misaligned. Terrible that I have to replace that black foam, it got shredded while I was dismantling the thing to replace the digitizer.

its always suggested to work in a dust-free space but we all know that's virtually impossible.
I had a bit of fun with dust & fingerprints when replacing my LCD after getting my Aria, After a time or two of taking apart and being unsuccessful, I left it as is with one visible flake.
If you take a hot shower the steam in the air sticks to dust particles leaving no dust

*Just to make sure I'm putting the electrical tape on correctly*
put the double sided tape on and then put the electrical tap (sticky side facing up) on top of the ds tape then apply the screen to the lcd
Thanks for the explanation dreamflux.. This, along with some youtube videos helped me out to change the digitizer, but patience is THE key...
Brought my phone with me to Cedar Point the other day. Survived the entire day....until I stopped at the bars on the way home. Got out of the car, forgetting I had my phone on my lap---shattered right by the track pad.
Just got my digitizer today for $22 on ebay (not bad) After 2 hours and a migraine later, everything came out great.
The only 2 things wrong now are the light from the softkeys bleeding onto the screen and out the sides (I'm just going to shut those lights off), and the trackpad sits a little lower than the screen now. Either I didn't align it right, or the glue isn't holding well. It's weird, if you press on the glass anound the trackpad, it wakes the phone (cm7 trackpad wake).
I only plan on using the phone for a few more months, so I'm happy with the results.
Uhhggg, did the replacement on my son's Aria. It wasn't so bad, but now the LCD screen doesn't light.
I get the vibration when you first hit the power button. Is this correct? I'm not too familiar with the phone.
Rececked the connector for the LCD and it seems to be snapped in.

did you have any problems with the digitizer responsivenes or something like that? I'm need one and curious about the quality of the cheap digitizers in ebay.
so I replaced my friends screen and now the phone turns on, has sound, vibrates, but just doesnt turn the screen on... the light sensor works and all, and if I call it, it rings and everything, just the screen won't turn on it stays black... I've checked the 2 ribbons and everything is fine, anyone have a suggestion..??

so what I meant was the digitizer turns on, but it is just a dark lit screen, no visual anything going on.. If i call it from another phone it will ring, but when i swipe right to left to answer and press around where the answer button is it doesn't respond either, just rings and rings... anyways just wanted to elaborate a little more..

same thing is happening with me as well..
^^^^ Soooooo.....I got the same thing on my wife phone, the BLACK SCREEN. I did my homework and read and watched videos on how to replace the digitizer. I was in a steamy room with all my tools from work with pre-cut electrical and .005" double sticky tape. im a mechanical assembler. I did everything to the tee and was very carefull. i think i got a bunk one from china. I bought mine for $19 from china. It had at&t logo and everything. you get what you pay for? So I've got to pay now $50 for a replacement phone through ins. Not bad because before i made the claim i thought the replacement was $150. Anyways just a heads up. Now i got a phone of spare parts Whats cool is that i get to root her phone all over again. So if anyone here has had the black screen. let me know what happened next with your situation. Did you fix it? replaced it with another one? thanks
So I dropped my nexus 4 cracking the screen which required me to replace the LCD assembly. After putting it back together and firing it up I noticed that the Auto Rotation (Yes the setting is checked in the settings) and the proximity sensor are not working. I installed Android sensor box and it is getting no reading from the proximity sensor or the gyro sensor. I have taken the phone apart multiple times to ensure everything is connect and everything looks correct. I have also unlocked the phone and have re flashed the stock rom with it not fixing the problem. Any help would be much appreciated.
My wife destroyed her display. Did same but gyro works fine but proxy is the problem. Work around so far is to set power button to end calls becasue screen just goes black when making/receiving calls kind of makes phone useless if you can't see screen.
I too have taken it apart several times and still nothing. Next plan is to find a new sensor unit and replace it.
From what I have been able to see in all my searching the proxy is extremely sensitive any deviation in placement, smuge on unit or display, minor deviation on color of display, screen protector, any interference from skins can affect it so check all those also.
In one of the threads on the Galaxy Nexus there is a patch to turn off sensor and there is mention of app in market that does the same, haven't tried yet have to get phone from wife to try, could be possible solutions also.
Will post back with findings as I get to try them.
Found great app in market Sensor Kinetic Pro shuts off proximity sensor or any other sensor no more problem with black screen after making calls. Still going to try replacing sensor however found it on Amazon less then $5.00.

Somewhat comforted to see others are also having the same problem... I recently replaced my nexus 4 screen only to have my proximity sensor fail on me too. Interestingly enough, i disassembled my phone multiple times to test if the sensor still works, turns out it does, but it is super sensitive. In my first experiment I had the sensor dangling out of the socket to see if it was still receptive to light, it worked perfectly - I used my hand as a 'face-simulator' to test for sensitivity. I then tried to place it back in the rubber grommet with the grommet seated firmly in the socket and what I found was that it worked, so long as there was only limited pressure on the enclosure. For example, it only works when there are no adjacent screws (for the plastic motherboard cover) applying pressure in the nearby area. I thought I could live with that, but then I tried putting the rear plastic cover back on and,... back to square one, dead screen on-call. I figure it has something to do with either pressure sensitivity or perhaps the pressure from the screws or the rear cover pushes the sensor too close to the glass?
Anyway I'd be keen to see if replacing the audio jack will actually fix the problem, any of you guys had any success with that? Meanwhile i'm going to just use the power button for ending calls. Any tips for how to use the speakerphone during a call?
Cheers fellas.
New sensor arrived yesterday changed out my wife's non functioning sensor and new one working great. Old sensor was bad !!!! She had dropped the phone several times and last accident she unintentionally threw it. Suggest no one do that

I put a case on mine and it started working. It always would work if i put a bit of pressure on different parts of the phone. So im not sure if bad contact on sensor or if more some type of alignment issue. But it does work now. speakerphone is terrible since cracked screen tho..
So i recently upgraded to Lollipop but my proximity sensor is broken. I used an app called Proximity Screen off lite but it is not working on latest android lollipop. So now when i make a call my screen goes dark until the call is disconnected from other party. same is the case with incoming call. Please help
I was in the same situation as you last weekend. Unfortunately, there's no way to get around it in software that I know of. I even went as far as developing an app from scratch to duplicate Proximity Screen Off Lite's functionality, but ended up hitting a road block on the OS level. Another option that would've worked pre-5.0 was to use an xposed mod to disable the proximity sensor, but of course that doesn't work in 5.0 now. Hopefully someone else can chime in with a software solution that I couldn't figure out.
Did you replace your phone's screen by any chance?

I replaced the original screen with an after-market one as well, and that's what caused my proximity sensor issue. There is a good chance your proximity sensor is actually working perfectly, but the after-market screen is blocking it from reading a "far" value. If you're comfortable with taking your phone apart, you could fix it without replacing anything. There were two things that I did to fix mine, but I'm not sure which of the two actually did the trick. 1) I repositioned the sensor so that it sits further away from the glass, and 2) I scratched off the black paint on the back side of the glass around the two clear sensor holes. Obviously you should attempt option 1 first, because the second option is permanent and will damage the aesthetics of your phone. Others have reported success with option 1, by gluing a thin spacer with two holes to the front of the sensor, but I did not have any luck with it when I tried initially. You will find that it helps a lot to do this while the phone is on, and you can see the results of your changes immediately with the Proximity Sensor Finder app.
Edit: Before you attempt any of the fixes, you should verify that your sensor is in fact working by pointing it away from the phone after opening up the back.
I had the same problem, I gave up on a software fix and I ended up taking the phone apart and fixing it outright. It's not too difficult, all you need is a plastic tool to open the case and a T5 and a 00 screwdriver.
There's a good youtube video (I can't link - see /watch?v=AZDAIgwbXk4) showing how to do it. Skip the battery section, you can keep that in place. At 9:00 he indicates where the proximity sensor and light sensor are. Take the small rubber gasket that covers the two sensors, and flip it around so that the larger hole is over the proximity sensor. Put it back together and turn it on, it should work perfectly.
Also, in the interim, you may wish to have your phone end calls with the power button, it can be found under accessibility settings. At least that way you won't be stuck waiting for the other party to pick up or hang up.

I had the same problem, solved by a thin plastic sheat that I drilled two holes in and then cut to the right size.
I placed the plastic part in the bottom of the hole, where to fit the sensor. I also shaved of aboute 1 mm on the part that presses the sensor from the back.
( I hade already taken the blackish film away in a own attempt to fix the problem, at least the light sensor seems to meassure more accurat)
Hi all, I've similar problem on my LG G2 D802. I have tempered glass with covered prox. On KK everything was OK, but unfortunately Lollipop has much more intensivity on prox
and I had the same issue as you, I mean - turned screen while I maked call and vice versa. Moreover, I can't get in to the service menu on LP (AOSP 5.1.1).
I bought new tempered glass with uncovered prox but fortunately Xposed has working old module: Disable proximity sensor.
I don't know about what module you guys talked about but this module works very well.
Hey guys,
just yesterday I got my phone back from repair (I cracked my screen, nothing was working then).
Here is a photo of my old screen, which had a hole right below the upper loud speaker:
I think it might be that the drop broke the sensor, and not the repair itself?!?
Using an app like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tigermonster.proxfinder shows that my sensor is constantly detecting something.
I'm not using any screen protectors or anything
For now I rooted my device and disabled the sensor by installing the xposed framework and then using http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.mrchandler.disableprox
Strangely enough, yesterday, like 3h after I got my phone back I called someone and everything, including the sensor was working perfectly!
Can anyone show me a picture of such a proximity sensor? Do you guys think a fix like in this video shown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPHsianYnqo, putting a piece of paper behind the proximity sensor could work?
You never ended up showing any images of the phone before/after the repair but if you have a screen protector fitted to the screen and it doesn't have a little cutout on the right just below the top speaker then the protector is constantly tripping the proximity sensor.
Thanks for your answer. Like I said, I am not using any screen protectors.
Here's an image of my old screen:

I don't think it has anything to do with that damage now tbh, because it was working well yesterday. I guess maybe the connector loosened itself?
Which one here in the pictures to step 6 is the proximity sensor? https://de.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+6P+Teardown/51660

Thanks for the info about the position of the sensor - I'll definitely do that when I'm going to disassemble my phone (which is gonna take a while since I'm waiting to receive a new rear housing from a seller in the US).
I'm planning to disassemble as little as possible, so I'm hoping it's easy to access the proximity sensor (but guessing by the pictures it should be).

Good luck. Hope you can fix it by cleaning it. Make sure to have some thermal compound on hand to replace the old stuff when you disassemble.
Hey one more quick question:
Do you think it's possible to remove the motherboard without removing the battery?
I guess that the problem is that the proximity sensor is either too close to the screen, or too far away (like there's some small gap between the proximity sensor and the screen). I will probably have to remove the motherboard if it's the former (if it's the latter I can just put something like a pice of paper at the back of the rubber).

You won't need to remove the battery to remove the main board. You'll just have to unplug it.
Alright, thanks. I am wondering about another thing: Why are there two holes for the light and proximity sensor on the backside of the phone? I was planning to try and first stick some piece of paper on top of that rubber plastic to get the sensor closer to the screen. Why the holes?

I don't know which type of proximity sensor this is, IR, led, electromagnetic etc. But all proximity sensors I know of have two "eyes" One eye emits ir, led, or electromagnetic field, the other eye looks for a change in the return field. I think you'll find a scratched, smashed return eye. Or debris lodged in the sensor housing. Use a magnifying glass and excellent lighting.
If you shine a bright flashlight at the sensor through the screen can you see anything blocking the eyes? Doesn't matter I guess, you'd have to disassemble to get it out of the way anyways.

It looks like the prox sensor comes covered in a rubber cover. In this pic the rubber is there:
https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/SQfQ23vhRFsvbJJT.huge
In this pic they removed the rubber to expose the prox sensor:

I suspect the rubber could be missing, lost during repair. Or perhaps installed wrong.

I did what you asked: There is no light coming out on the back of the phone if that's what you meant.
Anyway, I'll have to wait until I receive my replacement back housing and then I'll try my best to repair the sensor. I hope the rubber is just misaligned.
Alright - so I did have time today to disassemble my phone (got the replacement housing last week).
I noticed that there was no rubber part on top of the light and proximity sensor, as well as on the device above the two (i don't know what that is).
What I did is that I had a small tube like this one: https://sc01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1hBgwKVXXXXcvXpXXq6xXFXXXY/8mm-small-clear-plastic-PC-pipe-TUBE.jpg which I painted black and put it on top of the approximity sensor.
Everything is working well again (there were some lints on the display right below where the proximity sensor is located, that's probably why it stopped working from one day to another).
I guess the main function of the rubber is to protect the sensor against dust and lints.
I also am very mad at myself for having forgotten to take out the NFC antenna from the old housing before replacing it, so I had to open my phone again after I did already close it (and now there are slight traces of an opening - again )
But apart from that everything's fine now and I hope it'll stay this way.

I noticed that there was no rubber part on top of the light and proximity sensor, as well as on the device above the two (i don't know what that is).
What I did is that I had a small tube like this one: which I painted black and put it on top of the approximity sensor.

Glad you got it fixed! And yeah, unfortunately it's nearly impossible to remove the back cover without leaving dings at the injection site. When I put on my new top and bottom rear covers I removed most of the glue. So next time I can remove them without much trouble.
I am having similar problems. I just traded for a nexus 6P and everything works great except for the proximity sensor. The 6p was just OTAed to 7.0 and I only unlocked it and installed TWRP. No other changes and no root (yet).
There is no screen protector on the device.
When I make a call, the screen stays on. The screen turns off as soon as I cover the proximity sensor. The screen then does not come back on until the call is completed. I downloaded a bunch of proximity apps, including Proximity Sensor Finder. Proximity Sensor Finder (and others) report that sensor detects Far (5cm or more) and Near (value of 0 cm when the sensor is covered). The sensor doesn't seem to identify intermiate values. The odd thing is that the sensor doesn't seem to reset. If I cover the sensor (value of 0 cm) and remove my hand, the sensor continues to read 0 cm.
Does this sound like a hardware or software issue? The device appears to detect both the near and far states, but doesn't return to far after the sensor is uncovered. Thanks for any help.
Solved the problem. I downgraded to MM and the proximity sensor problem persisted, so I figured it was a hardware issue.
I took apart the 6P and the there were signs that repair had been performed. The screen was probably replaced previously. The little rubber gasket covering the proximity sensor was missing, just as the OP described. I cut a blue-colored straw and placed it over the proximity/light sensor. Works perfect!
I need to bump this thread cause a few days ago I started having the same problem that nickfuzz describes.
Now I've got my opened phone in front of me and tried putting a pice of a black straw around the two sensors, but that does not help. It reports 5.0 cm and if I cover the sensor it stays at 0.0 cm
Can anyone give me an advice about what to do now?
Update:
The light sensor is also not working properly: It is reporting way too less lightness, and tends to report 0 lux when I'm not directly holding the phone under a lamp (for instance).
After 5 hours of trying I somehow managed to at least get the sensor to always report 5.0 cm. That's better than constantly reporting 0.0 cm.
I put a piece of a wide straw (there are different sizes, you know) around the hole board on which the two sensors (light & proximity) sit on. I guess this is a bad idea.
I am now trying to get this rubber gasket from somewhere, but I guess I'll have bad luck since I'd have to buy a defective nexus 6p from which I could take it from
UPDATE:
Can anyone tell me why the screen is painted black on the inside, right where the proximity sensor is located? I scraped off the paint and painted it over with a black pen. That must be the reason why the proximity sensor is always reporting 5.0 cm (which doesn't make much sense, because at some point it would have to detect something if it's not broken).

Can you tell me if you put the straw around both sensors and their "chassis" (that black thing they sit on), or did you put the straw only around the sensors (i.e. on top of the chassis)?
I still need to find a way to fix my sensors
I tried to use some electric tape and put it on top of the sensors with two small circles cut in, but eventually I figured that the problem actually lies in the black paint on the inside of the screen.
I removed that paint a few weeks ago and I couldn't paint a new black paint on it that is not too thick, so I am stuck with a sensor consequently reporting 5cm.
I did try to use an Edding.
I had the same issue with the proximity sensory and a new 6P, but fixed it with this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobiledirection.proximitysensorreset&hl=en
Everything was still good after uninstalling that app too.
I just replaced my cracked LG V20 screen and fame and while moving parts over I ripped a very small part that I don't know how to find! It was at the very top of the frame and looked like a very small and sticky cable of some sort. I think it said "4v" on it and it wrapped from the back of the frame, around the top, and to the front. It ends up right above the speaker. Since I broke this part my phone doesn't wake up to my fingerprint without me first pushing the lock button and lighting the screen up. I have been trying to look for a parts breakdown and can't find it anywhere and nowhere that sells v20 parts has been of help either. Thanks for any help!
Try to see if the censors in the top are working(light sensor and proximity censor)

Working great
the gray bit that says a model like f800l or vzw and then further on a digit and a letter? Cant find anything else looking at my screen frame that fits your description even a little. If so it just seems to come on the whole screen+frame assembly.

It was up at the very tip top of the frame by the speaker. I just barely put my phone back together again (literally and now checking the forum) and the fingerprint sensor seems to be working again like normal. So it could have just been a loose connection that I tightened back up or something unrelated to what I was talking about.

Yeah probabily, I know the connector for the fingerprint sensor is a bit touchy, took a couple times opening and adjusting things for a good connection (it totally disappeared from lineageos settings when it wasnt connected right. I hope you didnt forget to transfer over the tiny rubber piece for the proximity sensor (right next to the front facing camera), I missed that first go around and when on a call the screen was forced off until the other party hung up)
