Hi
I do not know much about the complex world of Android. By not knowing much about it, I cannot even say much about things I want to have because I do not even know what is possible to have with these ROM's...
So maybe I should do the opposite- Explain what I want to do with my phone and maybe you nice people can recommend me of a course of action.
So....
I would like to try that whole under/over clocking thing- I understand that it is the best thing to do in terms of improving battery life. It won't kill my cam right?
I'd like to have Hebrew fonts.
I'm an ex-iphone user so is there a parallel cydia for android? a place you can get all the apps for free?
That is about it...
Thanks
No apps for free here! We support our development community!
I'd recommend stock!

Well yes, some have experienced a better battery life by rooting and installing a custom kernel (as well as a kernel manager like setCPU or JuiceDefender). Note that rooting means voiding your warranty (it is not really that bad )
Apps... well there is no such place to get free apps, by default most android apps are less than 5 bucks (with the exception of a few specialty apps) so it is better to pay for them and encourage devs to produce more (or better versions).

I found this searching around. Not sure if it still works, but see post # 12 on this thread!
Hebrew Fonts For EVO
You do need to be the root user of your device before you can apply.
Hope all goes well!
List of things only possible on root:
Wifi tether for free
Themes
With certain custom roms or kernals you get better battery life
Improved performance
Full backup of settings and apps with titanium backup.
Or complete backup of your whole rom and data (nandroid backup)
I would say go for it especially since your already familiar with cydia. A marketplace such as cydia is not needed on android because google will allow root only apps in the their own market place.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
EDIT: o ya, you can always unroot if you have any problems too, just do it right.

I switched in June from the iPhone to the EVO. I recommend rooting to everyone, just about. It's easy to reverse and almost impossible to brick your phone. Not to mention, xda offers a lot of support.
Not sure about the Hebrew fonts. Search around some more.
As for pirating apps, it's easy enough. I don't think anyone around here will tell you how. That's not because we hate piracy, but because we want to support the developers.
The Marketplace has a good thing going and doesn't share the faults of the App Store. The price of apps (which are in large part free) in the Marketplace is much more competitive than that of the App Store, and the sales/give aways are much more frequent, too.
Not to mention, unlike the App Store, each app in the Marketplace allows you to return apps within 24 hours if you don't like it.
Hello everyone. Allow me to introduce myself first off. I'm a long time xda member, an acs member (Android Creative Syndicate), a themer, and a developer. I originally started on the Samsung Moment, learned themes, and shortly after moved up to the Samsung Epic. I created quite a few themes for the Epic, and then began working with ACS devs testing and learning what they were doing for the ACS roms.
I've got some plans for my Nexus and hopefully everyone can benefit from it. My first missing piece upon buying the nexus was the widgets in the status bar ie bt, gps, wifi, etc. soon as I got my phone that was a high priority. I ported a theme immediately from the Epic so I could have my eye candy back while working on bigger and better projects. The theme is in Nexus Themes and Apps called H.R. Giger and can be found here: Thread. My second project, the Samsung Touchwiz Quick Panel port, which is also the same thing as the power control widgets on the Cyanogen Mod roms, is now mostly complete and can be found here: Thread. Also there is a subsequent thread that I turned into a guide on how I did the mod as well as actively answer questions to anyone looking to do the same for their roms located here: Thread. I say the mod is *mostly done because I would like to replace the auto rotation widget with the Wimax (4g) for us Sprint Users. The problem is Sprint has made the Wimax modular and placed it into an apk where it links itself into the settings menu, as well as the framework. The problem with this is I can't access the wimaxmanager inside the apk from the SystemUi.apk because of what seems to be a security issue. Most likely this was done intentionally by Sprint to protect their proprietary software, but I'm not 100% sure. I like to believe that we can get around it and get this working but it's def on the back burner now.
My current port is the TSM Lockscreen Parts. This mod allows you to go into settings, under the option for About Phone, there will be a new choice called Lockscreen Parts. From there you can choose between now 8 different Lockscreens. You can also turn the music controls on the different lock screens. I have the Mod 100% working with 3 of the lockscreens ported. I will have one more this afternoon and 4 more however long it takes.
I have released the Quick Panel mod to the public already since it's such a useful mod, but all of these things will be going into my rom which will include the quick panel, lockscreen chooser, and reboot options. The rom will be based on stock NS4G 2.3.4 GRJ22 AOSP build. There is absolutely, in my eyes, nothing wrong with the stock rom running on our Nexus. I feel adding as little code as possible to it to enable these features will send it over the top.
The reason for this thread is two fold. I would like to announce myself to the Nexus community for those coming from something other than the Epic and might not be familiar with my work, and to let any other developers out there what's on my plate if they care to take part in it or were planning on doing the same things. I hate to see someone start on the lockscreen today as much work as it is, and I'm more than half way through. Also I wanted to reach out to the GSM devs, as all this work should transfer over to your phones very easily.
Future projects are already on the backburner including a new theme complete as Giger that takes over every aspec of the phone but this time instead of replace the GB theme, I plan to accent it. Porting over a slew of nice themes is in the works as well. Also I plan on working on getting most of the Transparent and Blacked out apps the Epic has available over to us as well. Anyone else, I know Mikeinid was planning on a transparent gtalk as well so feel free to post here upcoming plans and we can build mods together as one instead of each other doing the same thing.
I hope there are more people out there that will join me in working on the Nexus because the more options the better!. I get asked plenty of times why am I working on porting smali code for the Nexus when we have full source. I'm a reverse engineer by heart. I work backwards a hell of a lot better than forwards. After this rom is complete and I'm set up building NS4G code from source, (I'm mostly done getting set up for that as well) I plan on playing with java code and seeing what apps/mods I can build right into source so in the future I hope my releases will be in source code and anyone can add the code and build it right into their roms.

I've put in a majority of the last 48 hours on on the epic lockscreen and still don't boot. This one requires modding the framework.jar. Each time I logcat the boot I'm finding more methods not present in the aosp so I'm definitely incorporating some new features. Music controls already work but the epic lock is going to display the tw controls I'm guessing. Regardless the end if near hopefully tomorrow then I have the ***** the puzzle lock then its more framework additions for the muiu lock. A couple weeks away I'm betting

dreams you are amazing. you already have my support (for what its worth..) and here is to hoping that you port puzzle lock to cm7 afterwards >.> or at the very least get nemith to include it
Cool, glad to see this stuff being ported. I am coming from the EVO and was used to so many devs working on themes, Roms and what not and the NS4G feels so bare. It's always nice to get new minds working on our device. You seem to know what you are doing and I can't wait to see your finished products. Thanks for the introduction.
I'm calling it quits for the night. Touchwiz files in this one require heavy modding of the smali. I have to add in tons of features not in. aosp and make it work together. I know most of what needed but this will take some time. Should be easier for the rest of the locks when I get our policy up to par with the sgs one.

currently no, lack of interest also, because all samsungs features is in the touchwiz framework, just like htc sense

Uh, it will take a lot more than a launcher to get multi-window. Maybe the CM team or some uberdev will build a multi-window setup that works. That is about the only thing I want on my N4.

okay why does it matter why he wants to have the touchwiz launcher? You guys are seriously going to question why he wants it like its any of your buisness, he likes touchwiz, its his choice of liking a different os. Its really stupid for you guys to question and put him down with negativity in comments instead of finding a link and if you dont like it? KEEP YOUR COMMENTS TO YOURSELVES. I was just Googling some touchwiz launcher stuff for N4 and came to this thread.
Your comment is something that I have always wondered here at XDA. If you are in a particular device's forum, it means you are married to that phone and shall not praise/desire features and stuff which other phones have. It isn't like ditching your current device, XDA is all about development, so if someone seeks features from other phones, I think people should help (if you can) rather than criticizing. And when it comes to likings, everyone has his own preferences... who r we really to judge WHY he is liking this.. Why NOT he likes that.. etc etc. I know a lot of people do not like TW but many do. I ask the TW haters, if you don't like TW then what are you doing in this thread? Why replying? Why bother sneaking in? Just mind your own bloody damn business.

If you start making your own distributions of Android behaving in such fundamentally different ways, I suspect we are going to need to start doing things to prevent you from impacting our app ecosystem. I'm not sure what, but I could imagine things such as restricting how users can interact with Market apps on these devices (not allowing reviews or such).
We have let a lot of things in this area slide -- for example to be allowed to include Market on your device you are supposed to fully pass CTS. However, if you start really diverging from the core Android platform (I would argue this takes you well into the realm of a fork rather than a customization) then some deep issues are going to come up about how we handle these custom builds.
We have been putting a lot of thought and work for a number of years into how to let Android applications run on increasingly diverse and dynamic screens. Doing this correctly, without impacting our app developers in a negative way, is a really challenging problem. I also think it is something that needs to be done at the mainline platform level, not as a customization, because doing it right is going to require new well defined interfaces with applications for them to interact with it, possibly starting with just a facility they need to use to opt in to it.

googles (dianne hackborns) response when cyanogenmod was about to merge a multiwindow feature (cornerstone).
if its a smaller cm-fork or rom, cornerstone is open source waiting to be cherry-picked - although discontinued and buggy from what i hear.
can't imagine google is very happy about samsung doing it, but they might be too powerful a foe to upset.
another small observation, dianne herself introduced something like per app dpi to jellybean which seems related, still dormant. we might see it one day implemented as a real feature.
This isn't really a question, a little more like a long rant. So I see here and other sections where people are asking when cm10.1, AOKP, and similar roms will come out for the s4. Why would you want to do this to your phone? If you want cm10.1 you mine as well get a nexus phone because what it's made for. I could you switching from touchwiz 4.0 to 4.2 cm10.1. But switching from 4.2 touchwiz to 4.2 cm10.1 is stopping your phone from being at it's full potential. My question to you is why? Why do you want to downgrade your s4?

I have many app ideas, but don't have the skill or the time to learn how to make an app. if you would like to know an idea and attempt to make one, just message me.

Never used touch wiz but from seeing people's phones messing with them for a bit it seeks like crap
With that said I got the s4 because it will have much better battery life that my Nexus 4 and I'll be able to replace battery when it depletes which Ai need for work
I'll stick with stock until a new Android version arrives. I'll flash the new CM until Samsung stock updates. I'll go back to stock until there is a new Android version. And so on....
Similar to above, my strategy is just to roll with stock for a year, and if I haven't upgraded to another phone and plan to keep using my GS4, but updates are coming slow, then I'll use CM. That's really all I care for, since the S4 is pretty fast even with TW, and battery is easily accommodated.

I would call it a upgrade, not a downgrade. CM will give more smooth experience, better battery life, alot faster updates, better aosp browser, better messaging and contact app, better costomization, more space left for the phone (not "only 9gb left" like touchwiz), better ram optimization, better overall user experience.
And ye, I dont care about all the bloatware and gimmicks Samsung give us. It slow down the phone and you'll only get frustrated.
Btw thanks to all the beloved CM developers who using their sparetime for giving us choices.
Originally I wasn't planning to use any custom roms on my S4, but hearing about the lack of smoothness is tempting me to. A fast and lag-free UI is important to me, so flashing a rom that provides that would not be a "downgrade" for me. Besides, I'm mostly indifferent to touchwiz features except for possibly multi-window, and it'd be nice to get rid of both Samsung and carrier bloatware. What's it to you though?
for me, first and foremost the smaller memory print on my sd card. 9 GBYTE out of 16 is ridiculous.
if it doesn't support a 64 bit Filesystem for my sd card, I won't install it.
Samsung ROMs on my S3 never let me down. Plus a lot of extra features. Compared with my Nexus 7 which is running almost perfect on a AOSP Rom.

The "9gb issue" is easily fixable, like most providers they want to add extra apps (bloatware) that you don't need (unless you desire), all you have to do is get rid of the things you dont want or need. That will give you a ton of space.

Most bloatware apps can only be disabled, not uninstalled. And I'm puzzled why you have an issue with what people install on their own phones. Isn't it possible that many people like the Galaxy S4's hardware but not its software?
Of course you will be able to get rid of the bloatware...just root it, and install titanium backup...off ya go...

Watch this video first:
I'm here to propose a community funded effort in finding(and funding) developers interested in making a design concept a reality. Looking over the video a few times, I began thinking how easy it would be to do this with android especially with all the customizable apps and widgets. the only problem is that some of the applications would need to be coded from scratch. Or maybe some apps can be themed to look like it (IE ubermusic app theme). I personally like it and would like to see if anyone else is interested and thoughts/opinions. I'm extremely open to criticism and critiques. I would take on this project myself, but my Java knowledge isn't that extensive, as well as my C/C++ skills, however, I am willing to make the necessary image files if need. I may also contact designer behind the iOS7 concept and see if he is willing to contribute as well.
In Final:
Looking to find and fund developers willing to either make a custom rom or applications that are similar to the ones in the video. If it a custom rom, I would it would be CM, Kang or Slimrom base! yee.

That concept video is basically just a bunch of features that already exist in android. As for the design language as previous commenter mentioned it's very much like MIUI. Just start looking at different launchers and widgets available and you'll soon be able to knock this up. I could probably get a decent replication with a combination of Apex launcher, UCCW and some icon packs.

Oh they can all they want. Every developer knows that all they do is take codes from others. Even their theme settings are built off of CM coding. The whole look of the rom is a copycat off someone else. Apple is gonna have a field day with them the min they try to sell internationally and so is the GPL lawyers.
No real dev takes them seriously.
