Service - Nexus 6 General

I just came from the LG g pro and they have a store by my house. That my service sucked no LTE at all. Today I go in there for the first time with my nexus 6. Great service almost full lte. Same provider att. Crazy guess lg's radio Sucks or something. Another reason I am glad to have my 6

Might have to do with what frequencies the phones support. Could the N6 be locking on to a band that the LG doesn't even support?

[Q] Get LG G2 and stay on VZW Unlimited or Nexus 5 and jump to T-Mobile unlimited

Since it's piety much assured the Nexus 5 will never be available on Verizon I was looking at getting the G2 to keep unlimited data and Verizon's awesome network, however looking at how the original Optimus G on ATT never got official CM releases I am now worried about getting it as I love using ROMs and being able to keep the most recent Android version on my phone. Now the Nexus 5 well be based on the G2 and obviously have the best Dev support of any phone, but that means leaving Verizon's network for T-Mobile, just wondering what all of you think.

Willing to bet it'll be less than the off contract price of the G2, so set price aside, I'll pay whatever for either device, more concerned about network vs. development prospects.
I'm voting Verizon simply for the fact their coverage is just too good to ignore. I'd love to be on T-Mobile because it's hard to ignore how cheap it is to be on their network, but their coverage is just not good outside of cities. The frequency T-Mobile uses also has issues when it comes to reception within buildings. There are a lot of people who love the carrier, but even plenty of the loyal ones will say the signal isn't the greatest by any means.
If you don't plan on traveling and your city has good coverage, it's fine, but if you do travel, it's a more difficult decision. I hate the cost that comes with being on Verizon, but it's nice getting data in areas where ever other carrier fumbles. In fact, at the job I'm working part time at right now, I'm the only one who does not need to use the wifi there because I get great 3g reception.
Also, I think the G2 is going to have a better dev community than past LG phones. This is the first flagship LG Android phone to release on all carriers.
Guess there's not many opinions on this.

Ill second the opinion on VZWs network being too big to ignore.
I actually had a demo Tmo device for the last couple weeks and outdoors the coverage was great, but once inside a building it went to nothing. Just because of the frequency bands they use, so its not like its something fixable. AT&T/VZW own the lower bands, and lower freqs have better building penetration.
In my case, no matter how cheap it was, Tmo just wouldnt work for me.
I also average 5-7gb a month so no prepaid or other plan really has enough data for me other than T-Mobile.
I guess Aio is always an option with 7gb/month allowance and options for more but 8mbps cap kinda sucks.

Sprint v. T-Mobile BYOP

OK guys ive been with sprint since 2010 and I'm on that old 400 landline minute plan... Grandfathered. Thing is, I have the 6P and was wondering if I could get a better deal with T-Mobile. I pay $79 a month with sprint. I checked the T-Mobile site and it said, even with my own phone, $95 a month for unlimited. That's insane if true. What do you guys think? Where I live, Sprint isn't bad, but constantly dropping data because of calls is just so annoying now.
All depends on where you live. I went T-Mobile twice in the last 5 years last time was 2015 and for where I am located they are horrible and I went straight back to Sprint both times. My opinion is go for it you can always switch back.. I wish T-Mobile worked good but unfortunately they are top bad to use. Sprint is fine here so that's my story... Go for it. Hope it works for you.
Edit, added: My location during this was Houston and San Antonio Texas. I had dropped calls a lot and 2-3g speeds when my status bar always read LTE. (2015-04)
@MatthewRobinson No I've been with Sprint for years but I do have plans of switching to at&t at some point because of some rom compatibility issues I have now with my Angler on YAOSP and a few other roms that I love and can't use because I'm on Sprint and they don't run properly on my device but would if I was on a gsm network. That and at&t is really good.

I had T-Mobile for years before I moved into a new house. Only thing that'd work was Verizon. After seeing that project Fi opened up to all and uses T-Mobile and Sprint networks I signed up. Only been using it for a few days but so far so good. If I had to choose between T-Mobile and Sprint though I've had both and always liked T-Mobile more.

It doesn't bother you that sprint networks data cuts out on call?
I'm in Houston, Tx and T-Mobile works very well for me as well as WiFi calling when I do need to use it. I've heard nothing but bad things about sprint here BUT like everyone says the most deciding factor is where you live...
I know several of my coworkers switched from Sprint and they have much better speed and coverage around the Bay Area.
I went from Sprint a few years ago because they was so slow even now I can pull 70 to 80 down on T-Mobile your lucky to get 5 to 10 with Sprint, but each place will vary

True. I'M a truck driver and like to use my phone as a hotspot to my ps4. The data cuts on call kill any hope of good battlefield 4. It seems T-Mobile is charging about $100 BYOP for truly unlimited. That is bull man

My bill with T-Mobile is $103 Nexus 6P unlimited everything! It's higher than my sprint which is weird!
I'm was on sprint unlimited plan at 60 dollars a month but left them after I got the 6p because they was trying to make me change my plan to the new 75 dollar one. I'm with at&t straight talk because T-Mobile service is horrible in my area and they just put a store here and it seem like the signal has gotten worst.

Moto G4 4G LTE issue

Hello,
I bought the unlocked Moto G4 from best buy last week to use with ATT. I started the phone initially without any sim card in it. Next time i restarted i put in the sim card and it detected as att sim card and everything seems to work until when I notice that when i am in my office building I only see H and not 4G LTE. I had Nokia 640 earlier which was ATT go phone and i was getting 4G LTE on it in my office building. And I have also got LTE earlier on other phone in same building. I checked the APN settings and they looked ok since I am getting 4G LTE at most of the places. chatted/talked to ATT and they are of no help, they are saying that since its not ATT and unlocked phone, there is no guarantee that you will get lte everywhere and may be the antenna could be weak on the phone. But I am just not sure if I got a faulty piece or what. Since even the lower end lumia 640 was giving me lte in my office building. I am not sure if I should just return and get another piece or just return it for this issue.
Any help is much appreciated..
There are several good apps on Play that show you cell signal strengths and such. Do a search in Play for "cell signal info" and try one of those apps. It will at least give you a place to start and a comparison tool to compare phones.
Sent from my SM-T530NU using XDA-Developers mobile app
I own a G3 and a Moto X Pure, I am on AT&T and have noticed the past few days LTE seems very... umm, weak I guess... at least in the Minneapolis/St Paul area, and my phone was falling back to HSPA+ way more often than "normal" this week (I travel here every week). I thought I was crazy but maybe there is more too it than that. I do know that AT&T has been doing lots of upgrades recently and rolling out LTE-A, or at least some kind of LTE upgrade, in some areas. Back home my LTE speeds consistenyl went from 20Mbps to 70Mbps down and 5Mbps to 25Mbps up in the last couple of weeks.
Best thing to do would be get a signal strength app, like LTE Discovery or Network Signal Info, and compare it to another phone on the same carrier in the same area and band (LTE Discovery will tell you the LTE Band you are using). Remember that not all phones report it the same, it can be wildly different, but it might give you some insight.
My point is, it may not be your hardware... and Moto's in general are known for really good signal reception. Just do some due diligence before returning it, but if you feel it is hardware, but all means exchange it.
thanks guys..will try it out..
Maybe I am being paranoid, but sometimes I wonder if cell carriers some how optimize their LTE signal to work better with their own phones. I have noticed this on T-Mobile when I always seem to get a stronger signal with a T-Mobile branded phone than with a third party unlocked device.

LOL... No, carriers have the ROM modified to make the icon show more bars on their subsidized phones. They can't actually throttle 3rd party phones on the same plan as a carrier branded ones, legally at least.

That's what I thought., although I still wonder why I usually get a better LTE signal with T-Mobile branded phones. This seems to be especially noticeable since I have upgraded to Marshmallow. Recently, I have or have owned a T-Mobile LG G4, an LG G3, an Axon Pro, and a Moto X Pure. As a rule I have noticed the signal strength being stronger on the T-Mobile branded phones.

Actual signal strength or the icon? LTE Discovery usually shows the truth...

This is based on readings from LTE Discovery, not the number of bars the phone is displaying. I suppose you could also come to the conclusion that LG phones have a stronger radio signal than other phones.

Verizon Signal Strength/reliability

Hey all,
I've seen a few posts regarding signal problems on TMO and Sprint, but not much on Verizon.
How is your guys' experience on VZW?
Works good for me on Verizon. I don't live in a big city, but I never lose service and I get over 100mbs dowload speeds in certain areas over LTE.
Been using mine on Verizon for a week now and no issues so far. It works everywhere any other device i have used works.
PH-1 reception in my house in mid-peninsula SF Bay Area is non-existent. Meanwhile the Galaxy 7, Galaxy 5, iPhone 5, and iPhone 7 all get decent enough signal here. No matter how good the phone otherwise, that's a deal killer.
Update: the phone continues to frustrate. Reception sucks even in the heart of towns here where other phones are just fine. Basically, the phone is useless except as a pretty iPod that takes cool 360 pictures. What a shame.
What's a good app to test download speeds?
I live in upstate NY. Literally in a gorge.i get the same or better service than my HTC 10 and the WiFi is way better. Don't need WiFi calling anymore.
I'm also in upstate NY. I get extremely fast speeds on wifi but lte seems pretty slow. What network settings are you all using??

I'm getting LTE+ carrier aggregation in the Hickory, NC area. I've seen download speeds as high as 28 Mbps, although I've only been on Verizon 2 days now and I've only ran a few speed tests.
I recently ported my number to Verizon from T-Mobile because I was one of those who was experiencing connectivity issues with T-Mo. For me this phone works much better on Verizon than T-Mo. The phone I have now is a replacement. The first one constantly dropped cellular connections and with it I never saw LTE+ on T-Mo not even once. With the new replacement phone it showed up at times closer to Hickory but Verizon seems to have it everywhere around here.

That's funny actually, right after I took that, I went to lte discovery app, and saw that I was on band 4 & 13 . It's not " supposed " to work...lol
I'm using Xfinity which is Verizon and works fine on the SF Bay Area but since I'm using Xfinity and not Verizon proper, I don't see the option for enhanced LTE...
I got this on Verizon on the way into work this morning.

That's good. We don't have those kind of speeds around here. 28-34 is normal for Verizon lte here.
My download speeds are only averaging 7 mbps on lte on Verizon in NY.
Which bands are you all using?? I left mine on the default and not sure if that'd make a difference.
I tried a few others with not much difference
This is my 3rd replacement. The first one didn't activate, the second overheated and now the 3rd seems to be working well. What I noticed on the 3rd one after reading the forums is the ceramic I'd alittle grippier than the last one which was smooth like glass. The 2nd one was smooth like glass. Before I did the replacement I also weighed it by hand because I read somewhere the new replacements have alittle more weight to it and it did. It was noticeable.
As far as signal. It seems to be on par with my m9. I was surprised I got 117mbps in my town which is in Shentel territory for Sprint but so far everything works great

Hit and Miss
Mine has been iffy since I "officially" added it to my Verizon account (I initially just pulled the SIM from my Pixel, and plopped it in my Essential - Worked like a champ, then I replaced my Pixel with my Essential with customer service, over the phone, and after reboot, it has been hit or miss (it was 3G from the time I hung up with Verizon, until I finished driving from Vegas to SLC). I messed with the carrier settings, and it was LTE+ for a day, then back to no signal the next morning.
Some days 3G is the best I can get, others LTE+ works fine, and some days, 1X or no signal. I've tried changing the settings from Global, to LTE, to LTE/WCDMA to what ever else looked okay). Today, it's been LTE+ most of the day.

He said their tech has a fix for it but it may not be effective. He said Samsung needs to release an update to fix it.

I used to believe in this statement.. But when I walk around with a phone from Verizon (business), Srint (Personal) and AT&T hotspot service, I realized this is very not true.
There are locations where each carrier is stronger than others. At one of my job site, Verizon and AT&T fail to connect at all constant roaming and drop calls while Sprint skips along like no body cares.
Point, additionally, as each carrier acquire and deploy new bands, they need to be built out so the newer devices that support the bands can utlize it relieving the crowded older bands.
HOWEVER, this stupid phone, with SignalCheck Pro installed, I can see the bands I'm on but the signal stregnth is horrible, like at the moment, i'm connected to band 41 but LTE is at -117dBm, that's almost like not having signal at all. Likewise when I'm connected to band 25 and 26.
I tried disabling all those bands and force it onto the lower frequency with hardly any success.

and yes the program can be uninstalled, but it was only installed because I need to troubleshoot this issue, so it's not the program that's causing the problem. It's just telling me what band I'm on and the signal.

It's not just you. There are multiple threads on Sprint's forums with users complaining. My phone constantly roams, the WiFi calling keeps timing out on location and though it says LTE most of the time data doesn't work. Lucky for me I keep a spare phone so I'll be switching back to my iPhone X until they resolve this but there's been no official word on any of this getting resolved so I'm not expecting a solution any time soon. I'm wondering if it was the update I installed that caused this because it seemed like day 1 the phone was ok. Maybe a solution is to use Odin and flash back to the original stock.

I have the sprint version purchased from S
Spent an hour with samsung to no resolution. Took my verizon sim and dropped it on the S10 and the phone was getting good signal and speed then dropped for a couple minutes then back to good speeds. But as it's doing this, the phone started to get very warm. Sprint tech support doesn't know crap, just make me repeat their written process multiple times and the guys at the sprint stores are just salesman.
Since the verizon seems shows intermitten connections as well, i'm going to see if samsung can send me a replacement.
